Disappearing address book on my mac when connected to iCloud

I do not necessarily understand how to phrase things but let me give you steps.
MacBookPro/Lion and iPad v1
have Time Machine backups
Activate iCloud on the Mac and within 4 seconds all the address items disappear
Log in to iCloud in Safari. Lo and behold my address book is empty.
Restore address book on the MBP, log into iCloud and intentionally deselct "contact" but things still disappear.
My impression is the orientation is mixed up.  The MBP is "master" and feeds the cloud in order to provide the same to the iPad.
OT: The situation started while attempting to help a friend who had a bad Win7 to iCloud experience. She ditched Win 7, went to an iMac and when migrating to her cloud account we realize we still have the mess from last fall. Trying to figure out how to "erase" the trash and add fresh content.

Do you have iTunes et to sync the new music to your iPod such as by check the boxes by the music?
Is the iPod signed into the same iTunes account that purchased the music you want to sync?
Are you getting any error mesages

  • Why isn't the Address Book on my mac syncing up with iCloud?

Since I've upgraded to iCloud, the Address Book on my mac isn't working right.  There are some contacts on iCloud that are not showing up on my mac. Also, I can't get "add contact to address book" to work in Mail on my mac -- I'll select it, and it won't add the contact to Address Book.  Funny enough, this function works fine when I'm on iCloud using the mail program within it on Safari.  And these edited contacts show up fine on the iPhone and iPad, which are all on iCloud.  Any advice?  Thanks!

First, open Address Book on your Mac, then click Adress Book on the top bar, then click preferences. You will be taken to General, but click on Accounts. In the bottom left corner of the Preferences window, click +. Change the account type to iCloud, then enter your Apple ID/iCloud username and password, then press create, and again if it asks. Quit Address Book preferences and your iCloud contacts will appear on your Mac (If you have any already synced to iCloud).
Note: If you have some of the same contacts on your Mac as you on iCloud, you may be left with duplicates. To delete a contact, click on it to highlight it, then press function (fn) and backspace.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why can't I edit or delete Address Book "On My Mac" or sync with iCloud?

Why can't I edit or delete Address Book cards on my Macs, now that I've migrated to iCloud?  I can edit/delete if I go to iCloud, but the changes don't sync with my Macs.  What's happening, and what's a solution?  Just wait for Apple to fix a bug?

On your mac, if your look at the left panel of the Address Book, you'll find general categories of "iCloud" and possibly "On my mac" - if you have contacts in the latter, then they are only local to your mac, they are not shared with iCloud.  If you don't have an "iCloud" category, then your mac(s) is not set up of iCloud.  Go to system preferences and look in iCloud.  Is the mac signed into iCloud, are contacts turned on for syncing?

  • Sync'ing Address Book groups to .Mac when running 10.4.11

I cannot seem to find the appropriate setting in the Address Book (10.4.11) or .Mac to allow for sync'ing of a Group. All the Apple Support Docs I've run across reference iSync, which is no longer applicable in this situation. Any pointers/redirection are appreciated. TIA...

  • How do i add my address book from my mac to my iPhone4

i have my address book on my mac book and have connected and synced my new iphone4 but im not sure how to add something from my computer to my phone. . . . please HELP!

The iPad contact app and the computer's contact app are not the same. You can't create groups on the iPad. You can view the groups created on the computer when synced with iCloud. Not sure if synced with iTunes, but the iPad app won't change.
If you synced the iPad with iTunes before, then it should still show up as a device in iTunes. If you are using the new iTunes, the devices don't appear in the sidebar anymore. At the upper right hand side if the iTunes window, younshould see a box to show devices. Click on that.

  • HT204150 My contacts on my iphone haven't synchronised with my address book on my MAc. Have done every remedy listed and it still doesnt work. Any ideas?

My contacts on my iphone haven't synchronised with my address book on my MAc. Have done every remedy listed and it still doesnt work. Any ideas?

The way iCloud works is that it isn't actually 'syncing', though this is how it's often referred to. The data lives on the iCloud server and is read from there by the various devices (just like webmail). Therefore when you make a change on your iPhone you are actually changing the iCloud website (there is an internal procedure to allow you to make the changes while you are offline, and they are then changed on the site when you next connect).
Therefore any device whose changes appear on the iCloud site, and who can read changes on the site made by other devices, is working: and any device whose changes do not appear, and which cannot receive changes made by other devices which have appeared on the site, is failing to connect. This appears to be the issue with your Mac.
When this happens, sometimes signing out and in again resets the whole setup and corrects the problem. If another device such as your iPhone is connecting to the iCloud server correctly then nothing you do on it will affect your Mac. (In fact even if it isn't connecting it has no effect on your Mac, only on its own ability to transmit changes to the iCloud server).

  • How do I sync my address book in my Mac to iPhone instead of my old blackberry

I stopped using the Backup Assistant over a year ago because it wouldn't backup the email addresses onto my blackberry even though it showed in Backup Assistant.
Now I got a new iPhone 4S and I want to use my Address Book in my Mac to the iPhone. How do I sync it to my Address Book?
How does that differ in syncing with iTunes?
    I already have iCloud.
Should I sync it to iCloud or my Mac Address Book (which really is already synced with iCloud, I think)?
I'm afraid to activate my iPhone until I have these questions answered.
    Can someone help me?

I don't have a Mac but on my windows if I go into my phone info on iTunes when plugged in I go to contacts and there are choices to choose from like gmail and windows then sync.  I assume when it's done on a max there is the same option on iTunes. If you go to iCloud.com and sign in you can check to see if your contacts are there. If you activate your phone it won't ruin what you have. It will ask you if you want to back up to what you have if there is anything. If you don't back up you can even if you say start fresh. I would go to an apple store if those things don't check out.

  • I am having trouble trying to get my address book from my mac (just downloaded Lion for this purpose) to my 3G ipad. Set up an icloud account but still confused! Please help !

I updated my mac with  os x Lion so that I could accomplish moving my address book from the mac to my new IPad 3G. I also set up an icloud account for this purpose, but I *still* cannot figure out how to move my address book from one computer to the other. When I'm on my mac and try to use bluetooth to export the address book, I'm able to find my ipad but I soon get a message that it does not support the necessary services. I have no idea what's going on and would appreciate any advice. tks in advance, Sarah

The address book syncs via iCloud, not Bluetooth or iTunes.
You upgraded to Lion so you could use iCoud.
On the computer. go to Apple menu > System prefs > iCloud.
    Sign into your iCloud account.
    Tick everything.
This enalbes the se items syncing to iCloud.
On the iPad, Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Create a new iCloud account.
Sign in with the same AppleID as your computer.
Settings > iCloud and turn everything on.
    BAM!
That is all you need to do.
Your contacts (and all other checked items checked) will sync between computer and iPad.
    No need to use iTunes

  • I have all of my contacts on my new iPhone, but none in my address book on my mac, and I can't get them to sync. Can someone help?

I had a bunch of junk entries in the address book on the mac, so I never synced the 2 when I had an iPhone 3GS. I got an iPhone 4 and even after deleting everything in the bunk address book, wasn't able to sync the iPhone 3GS's contacts (it had them all under a group for my my expired MobileMe account). So I got the iDrive Contacts app and back them up out there then ported them down to the new iPhone 4.
    Confusing yet?
So now I have all of my contacts on the new phone (whew!) but I still can't get them into my address book on the mac. What in the world am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for your help!!
    Kim

Connect your iPhone 4 to your Mac.  iTunes should open.  Look on the left, you should see "Kim's iPhone" or something similar.  Click on it.  Then look at the top of the iTunes window, click on "Info".  You can tick the box to sync your contacts from here.  There are also options to sync with the cloud, with MobileMe, Google, Yahoo, etc, which allow automatic wireless syncing.  Be careful here though, it's very easy to accidentally duplicate your contacts!

  • Sync Address Book across two Macs w/o .Mac

How do I sync two address books across two Macs without using .Mac?

    Hi
There are several third-party solutions. When I was without .Mac I used Address-O-Sync. You can find others on versiontracker.

  • HT1296 I have the original iPhone and I can't sync the address book from my Mac to the iPhone. What should be the problem and can I sync?

I have the original iPhone and I can't sync the address book from my Mac to the iPhone. What should be the problem and can I sync?

Thanks a lot for the answer. I'm so upset, have no even one contact on my phone. I has to do with the moving to iCloud from MobileMe.
I did exactly what you wrote, and when trying to click the vcf file on the iPhone the screen freezing, and then after few long seconds it goes alon to home.
So I tried less contacts in a Vcard, and i'm dividing my address book, doing little by little and it work.
    Thank you so much.
I still dont get why the sync with my computer address book is not working.
And why when I moved to icloud all the photos I had next to the contacts are disappered.
I had my iPad, which it still, I did not move from MobileMe to iCloud and all the photos are there!
Anything I can do to use the iCloud on the iPad as well and update the iCloud with the photos?

  • HT4918 contacts are missing from my address book on my mac but are on my ipad, both have icloud

contacts are missing from my address book on my mac.  they remain on my ipad.  I have synced my ipad.   i have removed contacts from address book on my mac and then re added them.  still missing.  how do i fix this

    Start by answering the questions.
Picking up old contacts where - are you referring to the email address autofill feature when addressing an email?
Did you transfer the backup for your old iPhone to your new iPhone?
Are you accessing an email account on your iPhone that provides over the air syncing for contacts such as a Yahoo account, Gmail account, or a MobileMe/iCloud account?
I am seeing contacts that I know are at least a year old, and current contacts in my Macs address book are not being sync'd up.
Does this mean syncing contacts with the Address Book on your Mac is not selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes? If so, has this ever been selected with your new iPhone? Deslecting this after it was selected does not remove contacts from your iPhone.

  • Ipad 4 sync address book from mini mac snow lepoard. ?

    1)  I am unable to sync my address book from mini mac snow lepoard to my ipad 4.
    2) How do i turn of the icloud......
    3) How do I add more mailboxes to my email to file emails..???
    All assistance geatly appreciated...ty

No you can sync them over a local network or USB cable, you just can't do so by iCloud.
The other option would be to sync your mobile devices with iCloud and use the contacts feature at iCloud.com rather than the Address Book when using the computer.

  • Can I import address book info from mac 10.5 to 10.7

Can I import address book info from Mac 10.5 to 10.7?   It tells me "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X.  You have Address Book 4.0.6."

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Try moving just the folder at Mac HD/users/~/Library/Application Support/Address Book from 10.5 to the same location in 10.7.
Or in Address Book on the old Mac go to the File menu and choose Export Contacts Archive, copy that file to the new Mac and in Address Book on the new Mac go to File menu Import, browse to the archive file on the new Mac and choose it.

  • My address book on my Mac was over written by the contact list from my iPhone, Help? restore??

Recently picked up an iphone - beginning to think it was a mistake. Just found the address book on my Mac was over written by my iphone contact list.
How did this happen, why was I not warned? and can I somehow restore my address book? I'm lost any help is greatly appreciated!

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out, and I apologize for my lack of understanding. no problem, sometimes it's better not to know in detail what's going on inside your mac
ok, on one side you have a backup of your computer you made some time ago when you had all your contacts on your phone, right?
On the other side you have your computer as it is now, the MobileSync folder contains a backup of your phone, but you can't use it because it contains the wrong data.
So in order to have the backup from some date in the past you'll have to replace (overwrite) the folder on your computer. This can be done by moving the old MobileSync folder to the location I described earlier.
After you replaced the folder, there will be the "old" backup inside and you can go into itunes/settings/devices and see if the backup can be used to restore your phone.
