Disappearing and Re-Appearing Dock

I have a Macbook Pro that runs 10.4.11.
I just installed several updates last night including some sort of security patch and new version of iTunes and ever since then, my Mac has been randomly freezing with the hourglass icon (rainbow disk keeps spinning indefinitely) and the dock disappearing and re-appearing at variable intervals.
I have already restarted the computer a few times, but the problem persists.
I don't have the OS disks with me at the moment, since I am out of town.
Are there any other known workarounds?

I attempted the Disk Utility Repair but it did not work.
So I disabled the application 'StickyWindows' and this resolved the problem.

Why do my recent phone contacts keep disappearing and re-appearing?

I recently bought an iPhone 4S and synced my contacts from my previous smart phone.
Now, the contacts I add get saved, but they keep disappearing and re-appearing automatically. This has been happening for almost a month now.
It is very embarassing when my new Manager calls up and I ask who he is.

So after the subscriptions disappeared yesterday, I resubscribed to Democracy Now! and Bill Moyers Journal.
This morning, I went to check iTunes... and two of the subscriptions were gone -- AGAIN! And the episode of Democracy Now! that remained behind was now listed under real Tim with Bill Maher.
I'm getting so frustrated with this... why am I having to re-subscribe to podcasts every day now?

Image icon on internal frame disappearing and re-appearing

I have just upgraded to jdk 1.4.1-b21 from 1.4.0_01-b03 and have noticed that after adding an Internal Frame to a desktop and moving the mouse over the image icon in the left hand corner the image disappears. The image re-appears again, once I presume, when the desktop and its frames are repainted.
Is this a bug or has something changed between the two jdk's.

Disappear and Re-appear Act

I have a iPhone (new model) and just downloaded the latest 2.2.1 update.
This morning my contacts (all of them) just disappeared! Then after turning the device on and off I saw an "emergency number" message that went no place. Turned off and on the device again. Then the contacts and groups re-appeared!
However, I am concerned about this "magical" process. I am going on a trip and don't want to have dead iphone with me. This process did not impact function of the device.
Anyone else experience this and if so, what was it?

I would say maybe you should do a restore on your phone but make sure all your contacts are sync'd to outlook or your e-mail client first. make sure you also do a backup of your device through iTunes. Then do restore I would and hope and pray the contacts stay after that

Mail disappears and re-appears in inbox, drafts and sent not working

I'm doing some troubleshooting for my Mum. She's running Mail under Tiger, and she's been reporting that some times she opens up Mail, and all her mail is missing, but if she tries again later, then it might re-appear. It happens to different mailboxes, but mostly the Inbox. It's an IMAP account, but the problem is definately not that (I've actually changed the mail account hosting, and it's made no difference).
On what I assume is related, and mail she sends, does not appear in the Sent mailbox (it sends fine), and drafts don't save at all.
The only issue I can think of is the way Mail was put on this iMac. Basically it was my sisters iMac, which she passed on to my Mum when she got a new MacBook. She passed it on, already running Tiger, but for some unknown reason, she had deleted Mail from the Mac. I put it back on, by using a the setup disc for my own iMac (both PowerPC) - and extracting Mail 2.0 using Pacifist, which I then just copied across to the the Applications folder. Could this be the origin of the flakey mailboxes? And if so, what should I do?

Yes, I’m pretty sure that’s the cause of the problem. Mail 2.0 is the version that came with Mac OS X 10.4.0. You haven’t said what’s the version of Mac OS X running on your Mum’s computer, but the version of Mail on a PowerPC-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.11, which is what your profile says you have, should be at least 2.1 (2.1.2 if you installed the latest Security Update)...
You should be able to fix the problem by reinstalling the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X she’s using, to bring Mail back in sync with the rest of the system:

After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.

Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Finder keeps on dissapearing and re-appearing

I am having weird issues with my finder icon in the dock.
When I start up my machine and click the finder icon in the dock. The finder opens up and then disappears, And begins to continuosly disappear and re-appear endlessly. I tried re-installing my system software, and preserved the user settings, but this did not seem to help the situation at all.
Any suggestions?

Reinstall your system software and don't preserve the user settings. The way you did it, you are simply retaining the problematic files. The idea is to move them out of the way.
Alternatively, try this: make a new user (using the Accounts pane and your mighty administrative powers), and log in as that user. If the Finder is not crashing there, migrate your stuff into that user.
The third possibility is that you could try to figure out what file is actually causing the problem. But this is actually much more work than the other two. Bad Contextual Menu Items, or StuffIt, are common culprits, but if no such solution suggests itself, the other solutions are easier.

The volume bar on my iPod touch 4g keeps disappearing on re-appearing, can someone help me?

The volume bar keeps disappearing and re-appearing, when it disappears and cant listen to music or videos, even when i plug in my headphones, if the volume bar disapears it eont re-appear, it disappears and re-appears by it-self.

4 questions: at login black rectangular box, appears and speaks- 2 annoying black box over text- 3 bluetooth doesnt always pick up keyboard/mouse at login- 4 dock disappears and reappears at will

Here we go,
1) at login a black rectangular box with white text appears and voice over seems to be on (even though its switched off)
2) after login an annoying black square surrounds the cursor
3) upon waking computer from sleep the bluetooth doesn't pair with the keyboard or mouse (I usually just power them both off and then back on and this seems to work)
4) the dock disappears and reappears on its own even though "hide the dock" is not checked

I too was having the same problem However, I could access both the menu bar and the dock by hovering my mouse over them so it wasn't a huge problem but I prefered having it there anyway. I was not in full screen mode and I could still go into full screen mode if I wanted to. I found the easiest solution was to just quit safai and restart it, but it might not work for you considering you couldn't access you menu bar either way.
I found this article that allows you to hide/show the menu bar and the dock through TextEdit (didn't work for me) http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2009/07/hide-the-menubar-or-dock-in-specific-app s.html It is pretty old so it might not work for lion and a bit risky if you don't know what you're doing so I wouldn't really recommend doing it this way.
And KSheppard, I know it's not really any of my buisness, but the way to get answers to a question isn't by insulting others and being quick-tempered. I don't use LR and rarely use the bridge so I can not answers about thumbnails in them, However thumbnails in windows file explorer and windows dialog for CS2 files will only show if you have installed codec into windows that will produce them. Windows does not do CR2 thumbnails on its own. I use FastPictureViewer Codec package for RAW File and PSD files thunbmail support.

Have you recently deleted photos using the finder or run clean up software? Is so restore your backup
If not the backup your iPhoto Library and launch iPhoto while depressing the option and command keys. Rebuild your database

Try one or more of the following:
> Restart Your Computer
> Uninstall and Reinstall iTunes
> Reset iPod (nothing will get deleted)
> Look in My Computer (Windows 98, XP) OR Computer (Windows Vista or 7) and see if your iPod is in there.
In some cases (and this happened to me before) plug your iPod in and out your computer a few times. It should get it going. If not, then I strongly recommend starting your computer.

I have spent hours on the phone with what I now know is a call center in Texas on this question.
I think Apple could be a little more "hands on" with iBooks Author users, and it should also be pointed out that landscape photos will not display in portrait mode.
In my case, I used gallery widgets to display vertical photos, since they look better in portrait mode.
But instead of simply rotating, the page disappears and a TOC of interactive media appears. The gallery behaves as expected when tapped. This is not what I expected, but since the gallery works, I can live with it.
Right now I have "tickets" telling me to "fix" this "problem or to disable portrait mode.
I don't want to disable portrait mode.
Will Apple accept the books if I tell them this is not an "error?"

Menu bar disappears, and dock stops working

I run a simple server using a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 7GB memory, a 1T raid drive and OS 10.5.8. The last time I changed any hardware, ram etc, was two years ago.
The Mac simply sits there and feeds files to the other Macs in my network, so no one is looking at it. It seems to have an odd crash, which does not affect its ability to serve files.
The menu bar will disappear and the dock and all applications will stop working. The dock will bounce an icon when it's clicked, but the program doesn't launch.
Neither "control-comand-eject" nor "option-comand-escape" work. I have to do a hard shut down.
I've run disk utility and repaired permissions. I've run DiskWarrior (v4.1) and rebuilt the directory etc. I've run Techtools Pro (v4.6.2) and run all diagnostics, including the surface scan (took 15 hours). It still acts the same.
The only other oddity I've found is that photo files will randomly go "bad". They're not going bad during a transfer, as I open each file after transferring to the Mac, and confirming they are okay. Then a day, a week, a month or a year later, I look for an image and find it with coloured strips through it, sometime wiping out the entire image. I have no idea if this is related.
Any ideas what's wrong and how to fix it?

Sounds like a RAM problem mostly, or RAM slot problem.
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.
