Disappearing Appleworks

Probably a very amateurish question, so hopefully an easy one.  I've had my refurbished iBook G4 for about a year -- no problems except it seemed to be slowing down a little, so I took a friend's advice, backed up everything and erased and reinstalled OSX Tiger.  Everything seems fine (in fact running more smoothly and quickly) but Appleworks is missing!  (I've used Spotlight to search for it.)  Any ideas what happened?  Is Appleworks not part of the software bundled with OSX or iLife '05?  If not, why was it on my computer in the first place?  A happy accident?  And, if not an accident, how do I get it back?  I still have all my old Appleworks files and no way to open them.  When I try, my trial version of iWork starts up...

Hi RR,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
AppleWorks 6 is part of the bundled software package that came with the iBook G4, but was not installed by default. There are a couple of possible reasons for this: Apple had already declared iWork to be the (eventual) successor to AppleWorks, and there were 15 different language versions of AppleWorks available on the install disk(s).
To reinstall AW 6, insert the install DVD (or CD) that came with the iBook, then Restart the computer. When the screen goes dark at the end of the shut down process (or just after you press the power button if you are Starting cold) press and hold the C key to force the iBook to start from the optical disk volume.
When startup is completed and you see the installer screen, do NOT start the installation process. Instead, go to the Menubar to find and swlwct the "Install Bundled Software" item.
The installer will present a checklist of bundled software that was installed when you reinstalled OS X. Go through the list and uncheck each box. As you proceed through the list you will come to a folder named AppleWorks Languages. Click the disclosure triangle beside the folder name to show its contents—the 15 different language versions of AppleWorks 6.2.9. Click the checkbox beside the version(s) you want to install, then continue through to the end of the list unchecking all the other checkboxes.
When you have unchecked everything and checked the version(s) of AppleWorks you want to install, follow the screen instructions to finish the process.
When the installer is finished, you'll be given the opportunity to restart the computer. Do that, and let the iBook restart from its internal drive.
Regards,
Barry
PS: If it was AppleWorks that seemed to be slowing down, the usual cause is too many items in AppleWorks's Recent Items folder. AW keeps a recent items folder for each User. It's found at Mac HD > yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent items. Trash the aliases stored there whenever you notice AppleWorks slowing down.

  • Appleworks 6 disappeared after install of 10.3

I installed 10.3 on my son's iMac that had 10.1. After doing so, Appleworks 6 was gone. I used the same 10.3 Cd's on my eMac and that did not happen. Will software update bring it back? Can I retrieve it somehow?
    Noahsmom

    Hi Noahsmom!
I had sort of the same thing happen to me when I went from 9.2 to 10.3.....
The explanation was that Appleworks exists on the computer... it doesn't need to be reinstalled after an upgrade.. it knows to work on whatever version you are on.
It should still be on your archived system folder, in applications if you haven't deleted that. You can make an alias, and drag it to your new desktop or wherever you want to access it.
You can also find it by clicking the harddrive icon, and typing in Appleworks.
    Hope this helps! Laura

  • AppleWorks disappeared

AppleWorks came preinstalled with my iMac. I recently erased my hard drive and reinstalled the OS using the install disks that came with my computer, and AppleWorks was not there. How do I get it back? I need it because iWork doesn't have paint or draw.

I found that before I posted, and all it does is install some translation software or something.
I installed it just to make sure... but thanks anyway.
"or something," in this case. "it" isn't and individual item (which is why there's a disclosure triangle beside it, while everything else in the list has a checkbox). There are 15 items in that folder, and each of those iterms has a checkbox beside it (all of them unchecked). Each one is an installer for an individual and different version of AppleWorks 6, NOT "some translation software."
Since you're posting from Texas, the version you want is probably AppleWorks 6 (US English).

  • Dock icons will not disappear when I drag them to desktop or trash

On my MacBook Pro, when I drag an icon from the dock to the desktop or to trash, it bounces back to where it was on the dock. I tried to move Applescript Editor, AppleWorks 6, Keychain Access, Activity Monitor,  Quick Time Player and several more icons and they all did the same. Each icon that will not disappear, has a blue dot reflection underneath it.
I moved one of the icons without a blue reflection to the desk top and it did go up in smoke, but as soon as i replaced that icon from finder back to the dock, it also had a blue reflection under it and I could not make it disappear again.
If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it. Thank you so much,
    Arudi

You're only supposed to drag icons out of the Dock if you want to remove them from it; running applications won't disappear immediately but may do so when quit.
If you're trying to put icons on the desktop, find the items in the Finder and drag them there with the Option and Command keys held down.

  • I build databases with appleworks over 10 years on my ibook, and continue to add to them. Now I have a macbook pro. How can I translate the databases to a compatible program?

Over 10 years I have built several databases with Appleworks. Now I have a macbook pro. How can I translate these databases to a 10.6.8 program?

Thanks Joe, but that won't work. I've finally found a site that answers the question: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page1.html
I can only say that by Apple I have been royally screwed. I'll never buy another mac -- everything I do would simply disappear into cyberspace.

  • Upgraded to 10.6.7 and now having various issues with Appleworks Drawing program.

HELP...I just upgraded to 10.6.7 and now my Appleworks drawing program is slow - beach balls all the time, I can not copy into other programs, copy and paste messes with the formatting, fills and lines disappear, Fonts are messed up when copied...ON and ON..I Installed rosetta from the 10.6.7 install disk but still no luck.   Any advice is appreciated, I am in a crunch with drawing deadlines an no time to learn another drawing program..Yes I am old school.and HELP!

You could look at EazyDraw: the version on the website is $95 download, $139 box and manual: it will open ClarisWorks drawings and is a powerful vector drawing program which makes a good replacement for Appleworks.
There is a much cheaper version in the Mac App Store but note that this version does not open AppleWorks documents.

  • Finder and Appleworks documents

I have a friend who had a great many files in Appleworks. We were able to install Appleworks on her imac with Leopard, and she has been gradually moving them into .doc format (copying the Appleworks file contents, pasting it into a clean Neooffice doc and then saving the Neoffice doc.) She saves them into the same folder that the Appleworks docs lived (with no extension).
What is weird is that the Appleworks documents appear to come and go almost at random. One time you can't see them in the folder where you know they were, the next time you CAN. You can find them with Spotlight. I've done the disk cleanup and reset permissions, etc, run Onyx on it. Still happens after multiple restarts and on multiple documents. It SEEMS to be just limited to Appleworks documents, which seem to appear and disappear.
We can live with this - she's about done with her copying at this point - but it IS a behavior I've not seen before. Has anyone else seen this? Does it portend something more ominous than just an old program not being properly recognized?

    This contains the following topics....
    AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?
These symptoms are usually caused by a full Recent Items folder, or less commonly, a full Auto Save folder. Follow these steps to empty the Recent Items folder or Auto Save folder.
    1. Quit AppleWorks.
    2. Delete the contents of AutoSave and Recent Items (Folders)
    ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/Starting Points/Recent Items
    ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/AutoSave
    3. I t was also reported that deleting the following also solved a problem...
    ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
    4. If you do not use either the Recent Items or Auto Save (aka Auto Recovery) features of AppleWorks you can disable them from the AppleWorks Preferences.
THEN... if AppleWorks still will not launch:
    1. Open your Applications folder, and then the AppleWorks folder. You should see the AppleWorks icon and several "supporting folders" (AppleWorks Essentials, AppleWorks Extras, Starting Points, etc.)
    2. Control + Click on the AppleWorks icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Double-click to open the Contents folder. Here's where the problem is.
4 You should see 3 folders and files. The folders should be named MacOS, MacOSClassic and Resources. In all the incidents I've seen, the "MacOS" folder has somehow been renamed with some long obscure cache-like number. Rename this folder MacOS (be sure to type it exactly like this, no space)
    5. Close the Contents folder and Package folder and try to launch Appleworks.
    6. Smile!
If this does not work for you, (there was one incident that the above fix did not for me), highlight the MacOS folder and duplicate it. Toss the original and rename the copy to Mac OS. For some reason the copy worked.

  • I can't open Appleworks (or any appleworks documents)

I don't know what happened, but suddenly I can't open Appleworks. It disappeared from my dock. I made a new alias to put there. If I click on an Appleworks document the Alias icon bounces up and down once, and nothing else happens. Same if I click on the alias icon in the dock. If I click on Appleworks in the Applications menu nothing happens. If I highlight a file and try to open it under "Open With" under the File menu in Finder nothing happens. Any help anyone can provide would be appreciated, as I have a lot of important information stored in those documents. Thanks!

I had a similar problem & did what you said & AppleWorks opened from the desktop. What do I do with the folders on the desktop?
If you really applied what I described:
    +Drag the folder:+
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks:
    +and the file:+
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.appleworks.pli st
    +on the Desktop.+
and if in this case AppleWorks.6 behaves correctly, you may trash the items which I asked you to move on the desktop.
Often, it's a good idea to open the
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks:
folder which you moved on the desktop ,
grab the "AppleWorks 6 Button Bars" file and move it in the newly created
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks: folder.
Doing that you will recover your set of custom buttons; Of course if you didn't created custom buttons this task is unneeded.

  • Printing document with table to PDF - file disappears

When I print a document to PDF from either AppleWorks or MS Word, it is saved to the location as PDF and works as would be expected. If the file contains a table, the PDF file initially appears where saved but disappears when I attempt to access it.
The document was initially created in AppleWorks. The MS Word document was translated from AppleWorks.
The PDF file quite literally disappears from the screen. All routine Mac software maintenance is on schedule and all Apple updates for my OS completed to date.

The solution is logical, if annoying.
My Print to PDF problem has been solved. I complained about not being able to save documents containing tables created on AppleWorks as PDF, but the tables were not the problem. The problem was a font within a table. I discovered this when I could also not print the document to a printer. Despite saving as PDF being a print routine, I cannot get out of Save As mode. The document did print to PDF on my mother’s iBook because another font was substituted in the table.
There are several fonts on my PowerBook that will not print, even on a postscript printer that has them on board. That is a separate and largely ignored problem. One of those is the Bookman family. Too bad. I like that family and use it frequently with older operating systems, but OS X refuses to print anything containing that font. I have never taken the time to troubleshoot the problem.
I had already performed the searches suggested to no avail. The point of all this is that font problems that prevent printing a document to a printer will also prevent a document from printing to PDF. The icon initially appearing then going away seems odd to me but probably not to a MacGeek.
Thank you, Mask, for giving thought to this issue. Now, maybe I should invest in a font troubleshooting application.

  • TEXT DISAPPEARS

I recently ugraded to appleworks 6 from 5 on a PC with Win XP Pro. I had a database created in 5 which was imported to 6. My problem is that when I create a new record and I type in text, when I move to the next field the text disappears. If I go into an existing record and try to edit it, it works fine. I type in text and it remains.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't really have a definitive answer. A couple of possibilities that help "funky" problems with databases on a Mac may help. First, save the AppleWorks 6 database as AppleWorks 5 & reopen this in AppleWorks 6. I know that your problem database (& mine) started out as AW 5, but it's worth a try as it seems to strip out some minor corruption. Second, create a new blank database in AppleWorks 6 with the same fields in the same order then go to File > Insert & select the problem database. It may be something in the file structure of the problem database. On a Mac, this can also be done by dragging the icon of the old DB onto the window of the new one. I've never tried that in Windows, but it may work.
I had this problem appear periodically in a database when I briefly used AppleWorks 6 on Windows 2000 Pro. Once the database did that, it even carried over when I opened the same database in AppleWorks 6 on my Mac. Unfortunately, the various things I tried to fix it didn't always work the next time it happened. I remember someone mentioning a fix in a forum several years ago, but by the time it happened to me I couldn't remember or find the post.

  • Find/Change window freezes - Appleworks 6.2.9

When I use the Appleworks Find/Change window for the first time after booting up my new iMac, the Find/Change window freezes up and then disappears and then the opened document on my desktop disappears from my desktop, too. I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and a new iMac purchased a few months ago. Why does the Find/Change window freeze up and do that? How do I fix this? Thanks for any help!

The most likely cause is corrupt preferences & is easily fixed by deleting the AppleWorks preferences.

  • Appleworks 6 spell checker (spellchecker) window

    Hi everyone,
Pages is ok (if you believe that all of your word processing functions should be sliced into tiny pieces of spreadsheet, documents, etc, sorry, ranting)... but I like Appleworks. So I imported Appleworks 6 over from my previous Macbook to this one.
There is one problem. When I try to spellcheck my documents, a tiny little spellcheck window appears up at the menu bar. When I say tiny, that is, it is so small that it does not show me the actual words being flagged or the options to correct them -- all that can be seen is "1 Questionable Word." I cannot figure out how to resize or edit or work with this window, so spellcheck is pretty unusable. My best option right now is to export a document into Pages, spellcheck it there, and return to AW. Not good!
(One of the issues I have with Pages is the lack of outline capabilities -- creating a document in outline form. And when I tried to copy my outline from AW to Pages, the outline formatting disappeared! But those are other problems for another day.)
I have spent about an hour searching these forums, am finally throwing in the towel & posting, seriously hoping anyone can help. Thank you for very much for your ideas!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
This is likely related to the spell check window problem that happened with early OS X versions of AppleWorks 6 when the dock was placed anywhere except the bottom. Try changing the dock location & see what happens. The dock issue was fixed in the 6.2.2 update, but returned with 6.2.4. It was again fixed with the last update, 6.2.9.
The other, less likely, possibility is corrupt preferences. Easily fixed by deleting the AppleWorks preferences.

  • Font Issues & AppleWorks

It seems that some of my fonts disappeared from out of nowhere. I was using Pages and tried changing the font to Times New Roman and nothing happened.
When I tried typing in Word (Office 2004), the default font in a new document was Courier.
I opened FontBook and tested the fonts. It said they were all fine.
Also, it seems I don't have AppleWorks anymore. I tried to open it from Spotlight, and when I clicked all that opened was Word.

    Big subject, so I'll let Kurt explain it;

I had my mac rebooted and now I can't find appleworks any idea where to download this?

"Rebooting" means restarting &, as fruhulda said, that won't cause things to disappear. If you mean you had the hard drive erased & the system reinstalled, you will have to find the original disk with the AppleWorks installer.

The curious thing here is that on the one hand the code cannot be loaded so how could the trojan code be ever executed.  But you would expect the "Unexpectedly quit" message if the intel trojan did get executed in a ppc app.  So this begs the question when (and how) does the trojan code get executed in conjunction with launching an app?
I understand code injected into a specific app like safari that uses the global environment variable to access the code in /Users/Shared.  But I don't understand how that code could be executed by attempting to run an randomly chosen ppc app.  Unless of course   other code has been injected is in a more critical place than just safari and that is scary.
Some of this was explained to us a few weeks back by an infected user who reverse engineered the code, working with Intego to figure out why he was being re-directed on Google searches. At the time, nobody believed much of anything he was saying, but F-Secure explains it more fullly in this analysis. Note that there is a filter component to keep it from loading code into apps that would be unstable, so watch for the next variant to filter out ppc only apps.
In a related matter, I got word from the PC side of the house that similar techniques are being used by drive-by infections that were injecting code into a running app which would disappear when they quit the app. A one-time infection, so to speak. Makes it really hard to even know you were temporarily infected, let alone how, why, what damage, etc.
