Disappearing Application Windows?

Hi,
I am running mac os x 10.5.5 on a 3.06 24inch imac with 4gb ram.
recently I have a worsening issue with application windows disappearing. It seems to happen with all applications intermittently & i cant pin down why it is happening.
I do use spaces & have some applications set to run in certain spaces but this really doesnt seem to effect the problem.
For example i will be working away in space 2 with mail & that will be fine. If I go to space 4 where itunes should be, spaces moves to the space but there is nothing visible from itunes window wise. I get the menus accross the top as itunes but no wimdows for the app.
If i go back to space 2 with mail & click i tunes in the dock, it takes me to space 4 & I have the itunes menus again but no windows.
If I check all of my spaces individually, none of the itunes windows are in any of the other spaces.
The only work around that i have found for this is if i go to the dock, click the app icon & choose hide when something has already disappeared.
If I then click the app icon in the dock again & choose show, spaces kicks in, takes me to the correct space & the application appears with the windows.
Can anyone help me to solve this problem any better than that>? Surely mac os shouldnt be doing this?

I don't use Leopard (yet), but I've heard of a bug with Spaces that causes applications to start on virtual desktops that don't exist any more, which sounds similar to what you're seeing.
If you've disabled Spaces, re-enable it, and make sure all your applications are set to start up on the first virtual desktop. (Again, I don't use Leopard yet, so I don't know if you actually can enable/disable Spaces, but I do know you can tell apps which virtual desktop to open on.)

  • Help: application window in workshop disappeared

    Hi All,
I had a big problem in using WebLogic Workshop. I drag & drop the windows
within WL worksop. However, I suddenly move the application window out of
the screen and it neven appears again in my workshop even I try "Alt+1".
Without the application window, I cannot open files in an application in
development. Even if I uninstall the whole platform and install again, the
window still disappeared. I tried to install the platform in another
directory, the problem still here. It seems that the workshop remembered the
whole interface setting in some places. Where does it put? I would like to
    reset those.
Does any one meet the same problem? How can I rearrange the workshop windows
position back to the orginal? Many thx!
    /Karen

    Karen,
Can you delete the following files/folders found in the C:\Documents and
    Settings\Username> directory.
.workshop.pref file and .wlw , .javaws , .java and .jpi_cache directories.
This will cause the IDE preferences to be reset to teh default values.
I don't think you need to do this to be able to view the application window.
But this is the way to reset the IDE preferences.
Regarding the actual issue, have you tried Alt + 1, this will open the
    Application Window.
    Thanks

  • After mirroring, application window disappears

My application window disappears after I shut down the LCD. For example, Safari is open with one window showing and when I turn off mirroring, the open window is gone. The application shows there is a window open, or 2 or 3, but even with Bring All to Front or Gather All Windows, the windows do not show up on my screen. Before mirroring, the resolution is 1680 x 1050 and during mirroring, it is either at 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi dogwood23
Try switching your setup back to Extended Desktop (mirroring off) and drag the Safari window back to the iMac display.
To answer your second question, have a look at the Resolution section of the following article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303086
The part about +"When the computer is mirroring video, it tries to synchronize the resolution of the built-in and external displays. If they can't be matched, the computer will change the resolution of both screens to the highest common resolution"+ say's it all.
I always keep my 17" iMac and 27" flatscreen TV setup in Extended Desktop! That way I control the resolution of each display and the location of all windows!

  • Problem with drag and drop application windows from one workspace to another

I work with multiple desktops (Spaces) and before I freely dragged the mouse a window from one space to another, now the mouse rests on the edge of space and the application does not become the next space. What am I doing wrong or where this option is set?

After the publication of the problem has disappeared, the window is dragged. Miracle! )

  • How do I keep an application window hidden when not accessed?

I have an application running constantly to control my FW audio interface outputs etc. I use system events applescripts to control it's UI with a USB controller (PowerMate) - and that by necessity brings the application window to the front every time accessed. That's fine.
But I want to have a script that hides this application window when it's not used after 2 seconds. Maybe there is an "on idle" script that could run to check if that window is visible. I imagine something including lines like this:
-- a routine that checks if the window is visible every 2 seconds or so.
    -- the window reference
window "Studio Monitor Express" of application process "Studio Monitor Express"
-- if it is, then hide it
    -- for hiding the window/app
    keystroke "h" using command down
-- if it's not, then ignore
I'm not sure whether to use system events or finder events etc. I have a bunch of other apps running obviously, but I just want this particular window to disappear when not needed.

I solved it. I know. Easy:
    on idle
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of process "Studio Monitor Express" to false
    end tell
    return 2
    end idle

  • How do I get my application window back on my desktop?

I use an extra LCD display with my G5 which I have temporarily disconnected.
When I use Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 it usually appears on the second screen but since I have disconnected it, the application window has disappeared off-screen. I have made sure that the computer doesn’t still think that the extra display is connected but this makes no difference.
    Please Help
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
    tell app "Sorenson Squeeze 4.3"
    set bounds of window 1 to {122, 132, 897, 517}
    end tell
Press the Run button; changing the first number in the second line may be needed. This method does not work with all applications.

Thanks for the response, that sounds like an easier way to get everything back at once rather than one app at a time.
I was beginning to think that I was the only person with this problem, in a way its nice to hear someone else has it too.
It would be even better if it can get fully resolved in an update though!
    Thanks again

Amy, is there a chance they could both be Syncing to another device that has the data erased?
What are the sizes & modification dates on the files you found?
Could be many things, we should start with this to be safe, though 2 different ones would seem unlikely to be this problem...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • When I view application windows, but then cancel from this view I am moved to another open window from the application on a different desktop space. How can I prevent this from happening?

    Hi Everyone!
I'm new to Mac, and I'm a bit unsure of how to handle a problem I'm having with application windows.
    Here's the scenario:
On one space I have a bunch of PDF's open in Preview next to the document I am working on. On another space, I might have an unrelated PDF open and an image, also open in Preview. Now, say I use the Application Windows button to view all my open PDF's on the first space, but then discover I haven't got the PDF open, so I need to open in in finder. The moment I quit out of the Application Windows view I am transported to another desktop containing an open Preview window! This happens with other applications too, like if I trigger application windows on pages instead of preview and need to cancel, I get transported off to some other open pages document.
This is insanely infuriating, how can I stop it!
    Thanks for your time.

  • Application window not working, must go to dock

I am having a strange thing happen both on my mac at home and my one at work. Sometimes when I click on the application window, it will not come forward. I have to go to the dock and click on it to select it. This happens quite a bit in the print dialog.. but happens in a lot of other applications.

I would like to add that Comcast is my internet provider. Perhaps that is part of the issue although the Connection Doctor confirms the mail box is connecting to the internet. No other function processes when Connection Doctor program is used to find the source of the issue. I have read forum posts but am unable to find a way to get my Apple mail to be delivered to my computer. It worked fine up until I chose to transfer mail to the Cloud. My mail account is a .mac account.
Still hoping someone out there can help me.
    thanks,

  • Viewing application windows in full size on a macbook pro

I connect my macbook pro to a 23 inch screen in my office. When not connected to this external screen, I find that one of my windows in Interface Builder is longer than the vertical length of my 17" macbook screen. How do I scan down to see the bottom portion of my IB screen? I suspect this is a problem with any application window this is maximized on a large external screen and then viewed on the laptop's much smaller screen. Thanks for any help!!

Most applications have a menu item labeled Window and if you drop down Window, usually there will be a Zoom selection. If Interface Builder has that, try clicking on Zoom and see if the trouble window snaps back to being within the smaller screen of the MBP.
Another method that might work, if there are other open windows in Interface Builder for which you can see the green resize button at the top left of the window, try Option-clicking on that green button and that should cause the resize action to take place for all of IB's open windows.
If that doesn't work, one thing you can try is lowering the MBPs resolution through Displays preferences and then restoring the original resolution. That should have the effect of resizing all the open windows to a screen fitting size.
If none of those work, write back. I still have two other methods that might work but I'm getting tired of typing these out

  • I am trying to launch Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 but the application window isnt visible even though there is a firefox.exe process running in task manager.

I am trying to launch Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 but it isnt working. I try to launch it and the application window does not show. When I look at the task manager and then look at the Applications tab, Firefox isnt listed. If I go to the Processes tab, there is a firefox.exe*32 process listed. Each time I double click the Firefox icon, a new firefox.exe process is spawned but there is never a visible instance of the Firefox application.
There are no errors in the application logs. I end up just having to kill the processes.
I tried launching in safe mode by holding down the shift button but the same thing happens.
Any suggestions on what to try? It has never worked since upgrading from version 8. I tried un-installing and re-installing

I went through everything mentioned in the link you posed and nothing detailed there resolved the problem.
The Profile folder didnt exist so I created it. Made sure the perms were good and that it was not read only.
There are no default folders appearing under the profile folder when I start Firefox.
I have Firefox installed to my E drive.
Nothing happens. The process appears in the task manager but no application shows up.
Cant start it in safe mode, cant run the profile manager.

  • Open application windows in the same place consistently

    Hello,
I am hoping to find out if anyone knows of a good way to convince application windows to open in the same location on the screen every time, consistently. This is, clearly, a minor problem, but perhaps you know how to do it. For example, I tend to use Safari with the window open over the entire screen, but every time I open a new window it locates itself with a couple mm between left side of the screen and left side of the Safari window, and the right side of the Safari window (the scroll bar) is partially off the screen (because the window is shifted). So every time I open a new Safari window I have to click the top bar and drag it a little bit to place it where I want it. Is there a way to "teach" Safari where I want it to open so that it will open in the same place every time? Maybe the problem is that I have a hidden dock on the left side of the screen and Safari does not want to come too close to the dock?
(I also have the same issue with Mail, because though I use that program with the application window only open over part of the total screen area it always opens in the same place on the screen which is always slightly off from where I want it to be)
    Any suggestions? Thanks!!
PS I apologize if this has been posted before; I tried several searches but the only results that came up were not at all related to my actual question.

I don’t think there is a way to teach Safari not to shift the window when a new one is created. And I don’t think it is related to the position of the Dock.
I leave a few cm of space on the right side of the Safari window and have the screen filled from top to bottom with the Safari window. Then when I make a new window, it opens shifted a little to the right of the previous window, but it doesn’t put the scroll bar off the screen and because the screen is filled from top to bottom, it doesn’t shift down, just right next to the previous window.
You might try using tabs. When you click a link that you want in a new window, hold the Command key down. It will open in a new tab in the same window and you can change between the window tabs by clicking on it on the top of the window. The X on the tab will close the tab.

Firefox no longer opens PDF files. Explorer works OK. I have checked the Applications window in the Tools/Options and it says I am using PDF-xChange viewer....It just does not do anything. I get the message in the Download Error window which says...."could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Is the same error which I get when I attempt to open a PDF file on a webpage using the Firefox browser....Explorer works OK so I am now forced to Explorer to read PDF files via a browser.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== After removing a old copy of PDF-xChange Viewer and updating to the last version

The error message suggests that the file (pdf) that you're trying to download cannot be saved in the folder Firefox tries to save it in.
This can be due to several things - it could be a non-existing folder (could be a problem with the updated application), the hard drive could be too full to store the file (less likely if you can generally surf the net without error messages) or it could contain an error.
To complicate things a little further, it seems to me that you have (at least) 3 different PDF-handling plugins in Firefox from different programs:
    PDF-XChange Viewer Netscape Gecko Plugin
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape "9.3.2"
    Zeon PDF Plugin For Mozilla
This shouldn't matter too much, thou, as it will most likely simply use either the latest installed or the first one it finds when looking up associations for files of type 'pdf'.
First, in Tools > Options... > tab General > section File download, select "Save files in" and Browse your way to a (non-writeprotected!) folder on a drive where you're certain there is enough free space - like the Desktop folder to make the files end up on your Windows desktop.
Second, under Applications as you mention yourself, find all document types related to PDF files, and set these to one of the programs. Check the entire list to be sure there isn't one hiding under one of the other programs' document types (Adobe Acrobat document, PDF X-Change and Zeon).
Restart Firefox, and try opening a PDF again.
If it fails once more, try changing the documents again to one of the other programs, like "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)".
If it STILL fails, change it to simply "Save file". Then you can simply browse your way to the download folder with Windows Explorer, and doubleclick the PDF file to see which program actually handles PDF files as default on the machine, and if it works properly.
If Firefox flatly refuses to save the PDF files in a folder which you're certain both exist and has space for the file, some (probably security related) program is most likely interfering with Firefox, preventing it in storing PDF files on the system.

  • Is there a way to view just one open Finder window (without any other Finder or other application windows coming into view) from a Desktop hot corner in Yosemite?

I just upgraded to Yosemite from Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro. Previously, I could view just one open Finder window by viewing the Desktop via a hot corner and then selecting Finder from the Dock. This would pull only the top Finder winder into view, without showing any other open Finder windows, and most importantly, any other open application windows. I could then easily drag files/folder from my Desktop into the Finder window (which I do A LOT). Since upgrading to Yosemite, whenever I use the Desktop hot corner and select Finder from the Dock, it pulls every open application and Finder window back into view, putting Finder in front.
Is there any way to view just one already open Finder window (or all Finder windows for that matter) without seeing all other open applications, without having to Hide the other applications or using Spaces?

Yes I've created an Automator Application that does the job, but the "watch me do" function that does the Mail Merge is a rather Clunkey work around, as the mouse moves all over the place, thats the part i want to remove and replace with a script, or work out a different way around it that avoids the "watch me do" function.
Is this Possible? or where/who is there i can ask to write me a script, im not a novice to scripting, but i am a novice to Applescript.
