Disappearing files for no apparent reason

I have a large number of files in my bookmarks area, and have 2 bookmarks folders.
Last night everything was normal.
This morning the Bookmarks tab showed only some operating system items - my two folders were nowhere to be found.
I tried Spotlight and Easy Find, with no luck. I cannot believe my stuff is not still resident on my hard drive, but something happened during the night that totally erased my files from view.
I have tried searching for names of files within the folders with no success.
Can anyone help? I have a 4-year old iBook G4 running updated Tiger V11 with all updates.

Did you rename your home folder by any chance? The one with the house icon. If you did follow these steps:

Since updating to the new 6 update, my contacts regularly disappear. I am constantly doing a restore to get my contacts back (have now restored 7 times over the last week) but they keep disappearing for no apparent reason. Help!?!?

Backing Files Stop Working For No Apparent Reason. Help?

I have a portal application accessing a remote WSRP PageFlow portlet. The remote portlet populates a backing file and the producer application reads the data. It was working fine and then it stopped working for no apparent reason. The data was simply null, no errors or warnings. I put traces in the backing file and verified that the life-cycle methods were indeed being called and that data was there, and yes, both were indeed the case. Data is being set on the SimpleStateHolder and it's just not transferring over to the producer side.
In order to rule out environmental issues, I've done this on multiple machines. Also, I started a whole new project, got backing file setup, verified that it worked, started developing with it and one time I deployed and it was broken again. I rolled out the changes I had just made but it didn't matter. The earlier code still failed to work although it had been working moments earlier.
So, any ideas? Has anybody else encountered backing file issues like this and if so do you have any suggestions on debugging or fixing them?

Open System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects
Select: Play user interface sound effects
And make sure the Mute box is not selected.
Now open Mail. From the Mail menu bar clik Mail > Preferences then select the General tab.
Make a selection from the: New messages sound pop up menu.

They might actually be the same Apple ID. When you have an email and use it to log into iCloud it will create an iCloud alias for you. I have an @live.no appleID, which also has an @iCloud.com alias that are otherwise identical.
If you log into applied.apple.com with the @gmail.com account you should see the @iCloud.com as an "alternate" email address.
You might also have created a new iCloud account/Apple ID when you used iCloud the first time. Then this @iCloud.com will not be connected to you @gmail.com address or any other mail addresses. You can then log out of that Apple ID at Settings>iCloud and log in with this @gmail.com Apple ID and sync contacts.

open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem for clues.

Firfefox crashes for no apparent reason, it will/can not file a report, I think it may be xmarks!!

Firefox crashes for no apparent reason and at no apparent "same point" I have two machines that this is hapening on, both are running Firefox 3.6 and Xmarks back-up.

Standard troubleshooting steps in order are as follows:
Power the iPad off and on.
An iPad reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
Restore your iPad with iTunes from your iPad's backup.
Restore your iPad with iTunes as a new iPad or not from your iPad's backup.
If no change after the last step, your iPad has a hardware problem.

Photoshop CS4 and CC/CS6 crashing for no apparent reason (Windows 7)

I’m currently having a serious problem with my Photoshop CS4 where it continuously crashes, for no apparent reason, since July 16, 2013.   I have done everything recommended via Adobe forum to try and fix this problem though it still persists.    It crashes randomly and I am usually unable to use Photoshop for more than 20 minutes. Since this incident, I thought that perhaps updating my Photoshop to the current version i.e. Photoshop CC would fix the problem. I to have the same issue and it all started after switching photoshop cc's layout to 3d mode now everything crashes repeatedly... Thankgod AE still works but yeah ps 3d system is the culprate here b/c It worked perfectly for 4 months for me until i tried there crappy ps 3d system!

Firefox 15.1 stops responding for no apparent reason!

As the title says, Firefox 15.1 stops responding for no apparent reason!
I just did a re-format of my system disk and I re-installed Vista 64-bit on it. I have obviously re-installed everything from Windows updates to chipset, graphics and sound drivers. I also pulled down the latest and greatest version of Firefox which at the time is 15.1. So installed that too.
Every now and then Firefox just stops responding for no apparent reason. It looks like it is processing the request (after clicking a link etc.) but it then it's just a silence... nothing happens!
It doesn't even say it can't load the page and Windows doesn't even say that it has stopped responding. Not even after I click like crazy on the Firefox interface like different buttons and tabs and on the web page... not even then does it say "not responding" in the title bar of the window, which is usually the case when you deal with programs that are not responding immediately (you get that dialog that asks you if you would like to close the program or search for solutions online). Just nothing!... it's only quite and does nothing....
At the same time, all other programs are working flawlessly, such as the Explorer (Windows Explorer), or even Internet Explorer. And Internet connection is not lost!
I have no add-ons or extensions installed whatsoever. I just installed Firefox! I haven't even had the time to install Java yet. All I have is Adobe Flash player. That's the only extra. Otherwise it's in its' original form, default settings, etc, etc, etc.

I have been on Firefox 14.x something before I re-installed Vista. For a good reason so! This is why I hate the new update model of Firefox and I don't jump on the next train (version) unless it's safe and I'm having compatibility issues with the one I use at the moment. This is why my first step after installing Firefox always is to disable automatic updates! I hate it when the software vendors are pushing out their latest software versions forcefully.
Frankly, I think this new Firefox version of yours is crap. It's not properly tested and it doesn't belong in the official release channel. This is more like a nightly build or something. It probably has some memory leak, despite the promises made by Firefox engineers that it will not have memory leaks and that it would be the fastest version of Firefox ever. I don't really need a faster browsing, I need a stable browser for reliable browsing. The speed of this Firefox version is close to ZERO! When it's not responding at all...
I have been a fan of Firefox since 0.8. I will be probably ditching this latest version and going back to an older version like 13 or 14 that's more closer to the reality and not in this fantasy world of fastest, greatest, latest, version this, version that, latest features. I just want a browser that works man!... I'm getting tired of Firefox. I may even ditch it altogether in favor of.... I don't know.... Safari?... Chrome?.... I might even go back to Internet Explorer after like 12 years of absence.

please try to uninstall the adobe flash plugin from the windows control panel. afterwards manually delete any leftover files in ''C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash'' and download & install the plugin again (uncheck the option to install the bundled security software): www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

Ethernet suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason

My late 2011 MBP is usually functioning as a desktop with external display and keyboard/trackpad, so I have it connected via ethernet when it's on the desk. However, my connection suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason.......... BUT clearly not a router problem as there's no problem with the wifi connection. System Preferences > Network > Ethernet is telling me:
Status: Connected. Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet.
Dunno how this happened, as to my knowledge I didn't actually do anything to cause this problem, just randomly stopped working. Any solutions much appreciated, thanks :-)

BI Server Fails for No Apparent Reason

Hi,
I have a problem I cannot explain in that our BI Server continually fails for no apparent reason.
We have OBIEE+ installed on Windows Server 2003 together with Oracle 10g. The OTM Advanced Analytics repository &.catalog has been installed with the OTM (Full HDOWNER /limited GLOGOWNER) database under pinning it (without a full OTM installation) because there is a need for an FTI environment for users to 'play' with but infratructure limitations prevent a full-blown OTM installation. The setup is unorthodox but the environment does work except for this issue.
The BI Server fails on a regular basis. I cannot find any reports in the NQSServer Log (or any other log I can think of) that points to the cause or indeed that it has actually gone down - the only clue that it has failed is the startup entry resulting from the restart of the service.
To minimise impact I have written a cmd file task that is invoked whenever the BI Server goes down - this shuts down the Presentation Server and Java Host services and then starts all the tasks in the required sequence. The resultant log from this task shows that the BI server goes down every 30 minutes. Obviously something is triggered every half-hour. So I have trawled through the various config files for a clue of what this could be but I can't find anything obvious.
In the repository Administrator, I have suspended all initiallisation blocks of repository variables except for those that are required and the refresh of those remaining is limited to 0600hrs daily so these should not contribute to this issue.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

We are running the environment on a VM server with Windows Server 2003 installed with 2GB ram and 50GB disk space. Beyond that, I'm not sure what memory measurement your asking for. Currently the server is running at 1.39 GB memory usage with NQSSever currently using 50MB of that. So it still has 0.6GB of memory it can call on if needed. When I open up a dashboard from a remote workstation, the memory usage inceases to about 55MB.
I have already gone through the NQSConfig.ini file and increased space allocations, for example MAX_CACHE_ENTRY_SIZE = 10 MB (Increased from 1MB) but these changes had no effect.
Exactly which memory measurement are you after?

MTA Crashes for no apparent reason

Running GW 7.0.2HP on SLES10SP2 OES2. GroupWise has been running fine since I put on the HP, so I haven't obviously bothered with it for quite awhile (if it's not broke, don't fix it), but now the MTA crashes for no apparent reason throughout the day. I reload it, and it runs fine for a couple of hours then crashes again. I changed the logs to verbose, but so far nothing seems to make sense. Below are a couple of entries from the previous logs. Any help will be appreciated.

i think there is a newer patchlevel available (7.03 Hp4).
Maybe you can update your agents.
Do you get error messages (var/log/messages), etc.?

For no apparent reason my phone stopped working...so I did a reset and got the message 'Restore Needed'. I connected to iTunes and got this message: 'iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on your iPhone before it can be used with iTunes'.
The problem is, I can't enter my passcode because I'm not given that option on the iPhone. All I seem to be able to do is make an emergency call.
It's been working fine otherwise. Any suggestions?
This is the SECOND replacement iPhone I've had this week and I'm getting a bit fed up.

Are you referring to the 4 digit passcode needed to enter the phone and use it's features?
If so reboot your iPhone and enter the passcode to get it operational. Launch Image Capture on the Mac and connect the iPhone. Now you should be able to download the video files to wherever you want on your hard drive.

Optical Drive Accesses for No Apparent Reason

I have a new HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with Windows 7 64-bit OS. My question concerns accesses to the optical drive for no apparent reason. While it seems reasonable that when booting up the system the firmware will check the optical drive to see if there is a startup CD in it I do not understand other apparent attempts to access the optical drive. For example, after bootup and running within Windows 7 I attempt to play a mp3 music file residing on the hard disk I can hear the optical drive being accessed. Specifically, I double click on a mp3 file on my hard disk but before the music player application pops up I hear several clicks and clacks as the computer checks the optical drive for a disk...I assume. Is there a setup file someone where this kind of activity is enabled? IMHO, the computer should not be attempting to check the optical dirve when attempting to play a mp3 file on the HD.
Another scenario I've noticed is during the logon process. Specifically, as the computer boots up there is a typical click-clack of the optical drive as the firmware checks to see if there is a startup CD in the drive. Next, Windows 7 in up and running but sitting on the user logon screen. When I type my password to log onto my account I hear more click-clack accesses to the optical drive. This may be a typical thing for Windows 7...I'm not sure as I'm new to Windows 7. However, the description I gave above concerning playing of mp3 music seems odd.
The sound I hear is definitely not the hard disk. It is the same sound that the optical drive makes if you open the drive and close it without inserting a disk. That is, the laser tracking motor moving the laser pickup from the outer edge to the inner edge and back to check to see if a CD or DVD is sitting in the drive. Playing an mp3 music file residing on the hard disk causes this to happen. It only happens once when starting up the music player.

What is the media application you have in the computer? Such as Intervideo windvd. cyberlink etc…
Few applications keep checking the media even though these applications are not in use. Fixes for such applications are posted on respective support websites, you may want to check and update. or if you do not wish to use such applications you can try un-installing these applications and verify the functionality.
