Disappearing files in Captivate 5.5

Hi,
Has anyone else experienced the problem of dissappearing files in Captivate 5.5? What's your workaround?
I have lost weeks of created work, before my IT dept contacted Abobe and said it was a known bug! It didn't help that my IT dept were then advised to delete all my files!!!
If I didn't laugh, I'd cry.Trying to be ever so patient...but I've already missed my deadlines because of this, clients waiting, and meanwhile, I'm looking like the bad guy. Great

I can understand that this has been a frustrating time for you, and I am not trying to blame anyone.  I just don't like seeing Adobe or Captivate get the blame for something that may simply not be their fault either.
Captivate was designed to work a certain way and lately corporate IT departments have been radically altering the landscape using virtual servers, cloud-based storage, and more.  As a result, Captivate users are getting caught in the crossfire.
If you go to your Preferences > Global > General > Default Locations and see anything other than a drive on your own PC listed in the fields there, you are going to be taking a huge risk...as you've found.
When Captivate is installed properly, with all required Admin permissions, default locations local to the PC, and patches up to date, it's actually a very rock solid app in my experience.  Break these rules and it will bring you grief.

  • Bridge CS5.1 – Disappearing File Names (Now You Don't See It All)

Bridge CS5.1. Lion 10.7.2. 27" iMac native display at native resolution.
For some reason, in Lion (but not Snow Leopard) Bridge cuts-off the bottom line of long file names (see the screenshot). Irritating. Difficult if I'm trying to distinguish between ‘Long File Name (1)’ and ‘Long File Name (2)’ where the (1) and the (2) have partly disappeared off the bottom, hidden under the bottom scroll-bar.
It seems to be something to do with the window resizing as Bridge, whilst not adapting the size of the thumbnails to fit the window size, produces a scroll-bar instead (see bottom right hand corner of screenshot). This doesn't happen in Snow Leopard.
I've tried fiddling with all the parameters which could effect Bridge's window display, but to no avail.
You can add this to the the other display problem with Adobe Camera Raw (see previous postings). Nice if Adobe could fix this too.
Sorry, this screenshot is hopelessly and incomprehensibly small owing to Adobe’s image size upload restrictions – so you’ll have to trust me on the disappearing file names and the scroll-bar.

Well, gentleman (gentleman, I assume) your answers are of no real help to me unless you have Lion to test this on.  There is no relevant comparison to make since I have already established that this works correctly in Snow Leopard.
Yes, it is a man, I leave the qualification Gentle to you
I was more curious to the solutions you have done and when something does work on snow leopard and not in Lion will not automatically need to be qualified as a bug unless you tried different solutions.
Have you tried to delete the 'lastusedworkspace' file from the user library, resetting preferences and even deleted the plist file from the user library prefs?  And did you try the default film strip mode.  Or other default workspaces, is it only your own customized workspace that shows this behavior? What have you set as additional info lines in the Bridge prefs.
If it seems a bug you should report it as such at Adobe, this is still a user to user forum. But with Lion still in development and wide spread known as a bit buggy it might also be wise to throw the same bug report at Apple.

  • Can't Open Adobe Captivate 4 File in Captivate 5.5

    Hi,
Anything special I should try or be aware of?
Whenever I try to open my 2008 Captivate 4 files in Captivate 5.5, I get the familiar can't-do-that-for-some-reason error message. (The one that suggests the file is already opened, or it was unzipped badly, not enough memory, and so forth.) Since Captivate 5.5 removes the import feature, I can't try that.
So far, I've tried running it with nothing else open on my computer (I have 10 GB of RAM), made sure to empty the cache first, and so forth.
In desperation, I'm also redownloading 4 now and giving that a try, but any other suggestions would be great.

Notes for future searchers... here is how I solved this problem.
Short Answer: Open the file in 4, resave it, and it opened in 5.5.
    Long Answer:
I downloaded Adobe Captivate 4. Fortunately, I had my license active and registered here on the Adobe site. Installation of Adobe Captivate 4 on Windows 7 was a bit weird... it asked me to reinstall Flash which I already had installed, it insisted that Adobe Captivate was currently open, and so forth. I let it reinstall Flash and I rebooted, and 4 was good to go. I made sure to install Captivate 4 in a custom location, not wanting to overwrite any resources or other things in the Adobe folder for 5.5. Then I opened the old file. It actually performed some kind of update thing when I did this, which leads me to believe that I was formerly working with a less-than-latest version of 4 or maybe even 3! Once it completed, I saved it as a new Adobe Captivate 4 file. Then I was able to open THAT file with Adobe Captivate 5.5, and save a new file again.
For some reason, fonts didn't carry over. So I reset them in all my captions, and then recompiled successfully.

  • Working with video files in Captivate

We have recorded a short video that we want to insert as an
animation in to Captivate. We've saved the wmv file using
Moviemaker as an avi file, but Captivate doesn't like it. A message
pops up to say "This avi file cannot be converted to swf". Any tips
on how to get a simple video in to Captivate?

Usually when audio is heard but the video is unseen, it's a
    codec issue.
What codec are you using for the AVI creation? I'd think it
    is having
issues being converted to SWF. Try exporting the AVI with a
    different codec.
Generally, I would stay away from trying to load .avi files
    into CP
    directly (as you've experienced).
Converting to FLV would be the next best thing (if not
    better) to a SWF
conversion. Don't worry about the streaming - if there's no
    FLV (FMS)
server, the movie will still play. However, if you're having
    sync
issues, that also seems likely to be a conversion issue -
    mostly related
to the codec (?). Perhaps try a different conversion tool -
    the one
    you're using seems to be...flaky.
Related to SteveC's reply, I find conversion from QT to FLV
    to be the
smoothest, so if you can output to QT (.mov), you may have
    better luck.
If you can't export the original movie to QT, try MPEG or
    MPEG2.

  • Can you insert mp4 files in Captivate 5?

    Folks
I really need to use mp4 files in captivate 5 as the quality of these surpasses flv files.  We do not have licences for Captivate 6 so can't use that.  Any advice would help tremendously.
    Roz Faulkner

    Hello Roz,
Only way is to convert them as FLV and use them. Can you convert them to FLV using Adobe Media Encoder? That usually retains the quality, there are many presets as well that you can use.

  • Issue opening .cp files in Captivate 5

    Good evening,
I am having issues opening some of our .cp files in Captivate 5. We are currently in the process of converting .cp -> .cptx -> HTML5. I handful of project files, when trying to open, this is what I get:
    Just to clarify;
The file is not open already
I have more than enough hard drive space
CPU usage, as well as RAM usage is less than 25%
They are reading as .cp files, and this isn't the only file that is doing this
Any help would be greatly appreciated regarding what might be going on.
    Regards,
    Geoffrey

    I found a workaround. If I open in Captivate 3, overwrite the file, then resave, it seems to open fine in Captivate 5. Ultimately, I wish there weren't so many hoops to jump through just to get these bad boys converted to HTML5. The process now is;
    Open .cp in Captivate 3
    Save in Captivate 3
    Open .cp in Captivate 5
    Save as .cptx
    Open .cptx in Captivate 7
    Publish to HTML5
    Save in Captivate 7
Is there an easier way to this process?

  • How do you create a save as default folder for MP3 files used Captivate text to audio voices files?

How do you create a save as default folder for MP3 files used Captivate text to audio voices files?

    Hi Ed
Thank you for contacting me, however I already know how to save text to
audio files via timeline using the Export feature.
So my question was not entirely clear and I apologize for that.  To explain
further, whenever I save a text to audio file, captivate takes me to a
default save as folder where I then have browse back to my production
folder where I am keeping all my Txt to Aud files.  This is very tedious
process when you have alot of files to save.  So my question was is there a
way to configure captivate so I can make my production folder the default
file for whenever I save a Txt to Audio file through Export feature that
the system automatically takes me to that production folder, and I am
spared the long tedious process of saving the file manually to the
    prodcution folder I want.
I have copy the pathway to the production folder in the URL filed in the
Save As dialoge box and that workaround as cut the work down but I still
have to paste that URL field to point the file to the right folder. So it
would be nice if I could do everything automatically.  Microsoft makes this
capability in their MS Office applications, so I was thinking Adobe might
do the same thing.  Your help with this would be appreicated,

  • Bringing Flash .swf files into Captivate

    Greetings,
I use Captivate 2.0. I have been trying to bring a Flash .swf
file into Captivate with very little success. The flash file is
clickable (so that users can review case study information as they
complete Try It simulations). When I bring the Flash .swf file into
Captivate, it works. However, correction (or failure messages)
display every time the user clicks the Flash .swf file. Is there
anything that I can do within Captivate to stop this issue?
Ideally, I would like the Flash .swf to run on top of the Captivate
file so that users can view the case study details without having
    to see the failure messages.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this. I
hope it makes sense to you.

Hi Zabcde (or PMW or P?)
Can I just understand (sorry for being thick) your situation.
You're trying to get a flash movie into a captivate session that
the user can work on, see, interact with whilst they're also going
through a Captivate simulation (try it)? Does that mean that slides
are advancing for the simulation whilst you're watching the flash
movie? Or are they watching the Flash movie as a kind of help to
then go and do the Try It session?
If it's the first, then I would suggest calling the Flash swf
and the Captivate swf as seperate instances in flash (using
loadmovienum or something). If it's the second, you should be able
to remove the failure captions from that slide so they don't bug
    you.
Apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick though
    Cheers

  • Flash Source Files into Captivate 5

    Hello All,
Need some help. I had some files developed by a client whom will remain nameless, and I promise not to mention anything about them because your experience may be better than mine. I have flash source files that won't play nice on this new LMS. I would like to take the source files and import the files into Captivate, so I can use Captivate to publish the course originally derived in Flash. Can someone explain to me how I can make this happen and maintain the functionality that I have in the swf files.
    Chris.

So you have a course developed entirely in Flash and you have the FLA source files and want to import these into Captivate? If that is what you mean then unfortunately that is not possible.
Although Flash and Captivate are "similar" you cannot import a whole FLA file into the Captivate authoring environment like that. You can import animations, widgets and relatively complex Flash stuff into Captivate by inserting this as an animation into a Captivate slide but not a complete course.
If you want to use Captivate for your course then unfortunately you will need to create the course in Captivate from the start.

  • Can't able to open CP (ver 5) file in Captivate 7(trial version)

    Hi,
I have .cp files, I think those files are from Adobe Captivate 5.0 or 5.5 version. I downloaded trial version of Adobe Captivate but those files are not opening in 7.  Is there any way I can able to open.
While opening .cp file, its giving error like below screen. Can anyone able to guide to open file in captivate 7?? or any converter avaialble?
also, I seen some forums where it says there may be hidden file but I didn't get it.

Only way is to try to get somewhere a copy of 5.5, as an intermediary step. And even then, converting a cp to cptx will need a lot more work. The remake was very drastic, text may shift or change fonts, you have to be sure that everything was AS3 (because CP4 still allowed AS2), question slides, animations will almost certainly cause problems. I really don't know about another way, sorry. After all we are talking about a time lag of more than 4 years, 4 versions (5, 5.5, 6, 6.1) have come and gone since, which is very long in software land

  • Error when trying to open Mac file with Captivate 6 Win

I've tried opening Captivate 6 files (.cptx/.cptl) that were created on the Mac version with Captivate 6 on Win7. Got the error message "can't open file" telling me to check the file and my resources. Resources are ok, the file was sent via email.
How can I set up a workflow for Captivate 6 between Mac and PC users that works? The discussion to Win files crashing Captivate Mac didn't help as there's no solution posted. Are there any issues concerning the compatibility of Mac and Win files within Captivate 6?
Any help is very much appreciated a we've got a deadline looming.

Same problem here. Something to do with path to

  • How to import .exe files into Captivate

I have some Flash .exe files that I want to import into

  • Opening Captivate 2 files in Captivate 4 causes error

    Hi all,
I have a colleague here at work who has been doing a lot of work on some captivate files using captivate 2. All was going well until he had a hard drive crash, now to finish the files he is using the trail of captivate 4, after which a licence may be purchased. but for some reason 2 of his projects wont open in CP4.
Most of the time he will open a CP2 file in CP4 and it will ask him to re-save it, I suppose for compatability purposes. But on 2 of these projects it fails and they wont open at all.
I am able to open 1 of the files on my CP2 installation, and I tried to re-save it but still no luck.
I'm just wondering if there is anyway to repair the projects, or if CP2 files have problems going to CP4? perhaps they were damaged when his hard drive crashed.
The next thing he is going to try to install CP3 and see if the CP2 files will open then, otherwise he has a lot of work to do again.
    Thanks for any help.
    Nick

Is there no possibility to copy and paste from the old to the new version, which means you need a machine with the two versions installed (they coexist happily together)?

  • Open Captivate 4 files in Captivate 7?

Can I open Captivate 4 files in Captivate 7?

Nope.  But you might be lucky enough to find a download file for an earlier version and just install it as a 30 day trial to upgrade your older files.  Captivate 5 through to 6 is what you'd need.  A download or disc for any of those versions would get you by.

  • How do I open CP3 files in Captivate V7

We've just purchased licences to upgrade our Captivate V3 to V7. Does anyone know how to open our CP3 files in Captivate V7... if this can be achieved??

    Hello,
You will not be able to open cp-files created with CP3 in CP7. Maybe if you could try to open them in CP5 (if you find someone with that version) as an intermediate step?
There has been so many changes (extension, ActionScript...), that I would really recommend to recreate the files in CP7 if you need to upgrade them. Backgrounds, images, sound clips can be recovered from the old files.
