Disappearing Folders

I've updated my Macbook and iMac (latest model) to OS X 10.7 Lion and have "lost" the Library folder in my User account on the iMac but not on the Macbook.
I used Tinker Tool to try to confirm that it exists - it does but I can't seem to make it "visible" -  before the whole OS corrupted and needed to be reloaded, so I'm loathe to use that again.
How can I see the foder again as it contains some information that is not available in tne system Library folder - information relating to specific programmes in my user account which wish to access.
I don't understand why it is visible/accessible on one machine and not on the other.

The folder is hidden now, to open go to your finder and click the go menu item then click go to folder type in  /Library it will show in the finder.

  • Disappearing folders created by 10.8 client on 10.5.8 server

I have a bizarre problem where a client (running 10.8.n) creates folders on a 10.5.8 server which then disappear for that client. All other clients (running 10.5.n to 10.6.n) on network can see these folders and access them yet the creator cannot. Can anyone shed some light on this please? Thanks Rob

Thanks for your help. I was not on-site when I made the inquiry. It turns out that the Mac client was connecting to the server via an SMB share. This was the root of the problem.

  • Flashing & disappearing folders

I was attempting to backup some docs on my Mac to a Western Digital Passport HD when I started getting problems with folders disappearing when I would click on them. Now I also have two open folders on my desktop that constantly flash. I already ran disk utility -- the disk as verified and permissions were updated but I still get the flashing folders. I cannot do anything on the Mac because the flashing seems to have taken over. I was able to boot into Win XP on the same machine (bootcamp)to find you guys. Hope you can help.

  • Portfolio help - disappearing folders and headers.

I've noticed 3 issues that I'm having trouble with in a portfolio using Acrobate 9 Pro ver. 9.4.4
    1.  Once a portfolio is uploaded online the folders disappear.
    2.  When adding a header with an image the image will rescale back to the original size once you leave edit mode.
    3.  Header disappers when file is reopened.
    Thank you!

The header disappearing is likely a known issue, see the thread at http://forums.adobe.com/message/3491158#3491158 and see if this matches what you are seeing. In particular, note the workaround posted by Josh_Corey toward the bottom.
Regarding the other 2, please provide more information and/or screenshots. Some information that may be helpful, for example:
Image scaling (what header layout are you using, what image format, how are you scaling the image, how much you are scaling it, what accordion is expanded when you close the edit panel, etc). Did this work as expected prior to the update? The header does dynamically adjust some, so closing the edit panel may cause some shift as will resizing the portfolio window, but I wouldn't expect it to snap back to the original size.
Folders disappearing (does this happen with specific layouts, do you see the folders if you switch to list view while viewing the portfolio in the browser - the 2nd button in in the portfolio toolbar)  Did this work as expected prior to the update?

  • Disappearing Folders (and the files within.)

I have a client whose running a Dual Processor XServe. The clients attaching to the server use InDesign, QuarkXPress, Photoshop and Acrobat Distiller. I've seen a trend that's a little disturbing. They are reporting that folders (and their contents, of course), will spontaneously disppaer from the server.
(Oh, and the server is running Server 10.4.5, with 1G RAM, and attached XRAID.)
Sometimes it happens during the day, sometimes it happens overnight.
We run a nightly backup, and have been able to recover most of these issues, but it seems to happen intermitantly, but not any longer than 2 weeks between events.
Has anyone else seen this behavior, and if so, what's the corrective action for it?
    Thanks!

  • Disappearing folders from shared mailboxes

We have this ongoing problem and just can't find a solution for it.  We have a number of users that have a shared mailbox.  They frequently get into the situation where one person can see a subfolder but others can't.  The folder is actually
where it should be but only some of them can see it.  All permissions are wide open for them.
So we disable their cache.  Then outlook goes right down the tubes; searches take forever, outlook frequently locks up and spins... it's either one hell or the other.
What can we do to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Please confirm the mailbox permission between the problematic users and his shared mailbox.
If these users have full access permissions to the shared mailbox, the subfolders should be available to these users. Pease create a new Outlook profile to have a try:
    http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/829918/en-us
If the problematic user just has Owner permission to the Inbox folder in the shared mailbox, the new created subfolder may not be visible to other users. We need to add folder permission for the new created subfolders.

  • (GT683) disappearing folders?

    Hey!
I bought an MDI GT683 a couple months ago, and had no problems with the computer itself, until yesterday.
two days ago, i decided to clear off some games i had on an external harddrive that broke. (clearing broken shortcuts etc)
when i turned my computer on yesterday, i decided to play some other games, and noticed that my "Games" folder was missing. not the content of the folder, but THE ENTIRE FOLDER!
i decided i could try to run a System Restore, but i had the games on my D drive. seemingly i cant run recovery on that drive, only C.
does anyone know how i can run a 50hour complete restore on my D drive? it would suck having to re-install and download around 70GB of games.. for the 4th time..

I am facing the same problem -- quite frustrating -- almost like the other Operating System.
I'll try the reco and hope that it works... you are right that we should not have to remember that extra step.

  • Iphone folders disappeared

Any idea why I woke up this morning to find all contents of my folders gone and all contents dumped onto new pages?

Unfortunately, the disappearing folders seems to be a continuing issue with the new iOS.  My iPhone 3GS, running iOS 4.35, lost all of its folders sometime last night for no apparent reason.  It was connected to the charger, not the PC, throughout the night.  As others have shared, this has destroyed hours of work that was put into creating folders and arranging icons.  To make things worse, the icons that were once neatly arranged in these folders are now randomly scattered thorughout the 20 pages of icons.  As everyone knows, the iTunes interface does not lend itself to quick and easy file/folder manipulation.  Guess this will take many more hours of work, but what is to prevent it from happening again?
    Now what........

    <E-mails Edited by Host>

    Hello,
On the disappeared folders, try this first...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
On the screen issue, do you have System Preferences>Energy Saver>Sleep, set to Put Display to sleep in xx minutes?

  • IPhone APP Folders

I have a lot of apps downloaded on my iphone excess of 200
Had them neatly organized in folders.
Was working fine for a while
Not sure if anything changed but when I tried to synch with my home desktop suddenly all folders disappeared.
Tried shutting down and restarting the iphone4
    Folders still gone
Then startted the process of recrating the folders again
When I organize the same online  and click synch they again disappear and I am back to all apps as is without folders
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks in advance

Hello I combed many threads on this.
      I finally resolved it.
if you have not performed a sync before, backup your iphone to save your folders.
If you lost your folders storing your apps
First restore the last backup of your iphone.  (You may have to do it twice.
Ie restore backup, then when sync occurs after back up. stop the sync.
    Then hit restore backup.
The above was on other threads.
Now for resolving the disappearing folders do the following:
Make sure you do not have
    automatic sync
    First select transfer purchases on
    itunes with your device/iphone
attached (this will back up your purchases to itunes).
Backup your iphone (take a mental
note or record time you backup)
    Enable restrictions on iphone
    -go to Settings/
    General/Restrictions/ Select on
    applies to install and delete
apps  (this prevents itunes from deleting your iphone data)
    check sync apps
and unselect automatically sync new apps
(if itunes does not allow this and
    states "warning this will remove
apps from iphone, hit okay...itunes will now try to sync and wipe out your iphone folders..)
if itunes syncs, you must slide to cancel sync
on your iphone to retain your folders.
Now you should see your iphone
display no longer grayed out on
the itunes/computer display  and your folders will
be the same on your iphone and will appear on itunes on your computer.
    At this point deselect
automatically sync new apps on the
    left display of itunes.
Now check any apps in the itunes under the "checked sync apps" box
that may have had their check marks removed in the prior sync process and you should see all of your folders on your iphone retained and the folders will now also appear on the itunes devices display.
GO about further organizing your folders on the itunes/computer display,
Now  sync, and your folders will be retained on both itunes and your iphone.  Finally resolved.
The disappearing folders seems to occur when one uses two computers for syncing.  Prior to this method my folders would disappear. No more.
    Good luck.

  • Open dictionary error from Persuasion 2.1

First of all, I posted this last night, but I put it in the wrong forum, since it was not at all obvious that you had to click on the "Using your Mac (whatever)" in order to post a new question/issue. I think it might be helpful to have that link on the first page that comes up when you select your product. Someone else had a similar problem, and some kind soul gave her a link to enable message posting, so I jumped on that too, and wound up (I should have noticed) posting it in the forum that has to do with monitors for a G5! Sheesh.
The Mac Mini issue is that one of my clients has a G4 Mac Mini running 10.4.11 and Classic. It has 512MBs of RAM. A couple of weeks ago, folders and files started mysteriously disappearing off of his desktop. Sometimes they would reappear, and sometimes a restart was necessary to get them back. Seemed to me to be a Finder problem. My suggestion was to reinstall Tiger, which I did, along with all of the updates to take him to 10.4.11. No more disappearing folders and files.
HOWEVER, a program he has routinely used with no problem since the early 90s suddenly started giving him problems (after I left, of course). It is Aldus Persuasion 2.1. When he would double-click on one of the files created by Persuasion, which he could open before reinstalling Tiger, he gets the following message:
"Open Dictionary. Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension because it is not scriptable."
Then it quits and the Tiger version of Script Editor starts up with nothing in the box.
Getting info on the file says that it is a Unix executable file. Say what?
I have repaired permissions. I have run Disk Warrior. I have reinstalled OS 9.2.2. I have reinstalled Classic. Still no success.
I had an extra G4 Dome iMac (10.4.11 and 256MBs RAM) and a printer that I loaned him, so he can at least open and print his files. I put his copy of Persuasion on a flash drive and copied it to his wife's computer (G4 Tower, with 10.4.11 and 512MBs RAM). It runs and prints. I have a G4 tower (10.4.11 and 1 gig of RAM). It runs and I assume would print, although I did not try. The Dome iMac runs Persuasion and prints. I have a G3 tower on which it did not run. These are all copies of the one on his Mac Mini, so I do not believe that his copy is corrupted. He is glad that he can at least print some of his files, but does not want two computers in his office. I'm bidding on eBay on a copy of Persuasion 4 for him, in hopes that this will correct the situation.
We know that Persuasion is old, and the guy at Adobe who has worked there for 5 years has never even heard of it, so there is no tech support there.
Other than trying a newer version, I have no more tricks up my sleeve, and I would appreciate ANY suggestions or advice.
    Thank you very much!
    Cherie

+When he would double-click on one of the files created by Persuasion, which he could open before reinstalling Tiger, he gets the following message:+
+"Open Dictionary. Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension because it is not scriptable."+
+Then it quits and the Tiger version of Script Editor starts up with nothing in the box.+
+Getting info on the file says that it is a Unix executable file. Say what?+
Starting with the last issue (Unix executable) that really just means that the OS doesn't know what program created the file.
It sounds like OSX and Classic no longer are tracking the creator info on those Persuasion files.
Question: If you double-click on the Persuasion program, does it run?
If so, if you do a Get Info on one of the Persuasion files, is there an option to tell it what program you want to use to open it? Can you set it to Persuasion?

  • Issues with Yosemite, can I downgrade to Mavericks or Mountain Lion and downgrade Apple Apps to work with older OS X

    Hi
I am having several issues with Yosemite, mainly disappearing folders (title / name) but no folder or more importantly no previews of .mov or other video files nor unable to open them.  I have years of these files that I want to edit in FCP X.
I have upgraded all my Apple apps so they now work in 10.10.2, but I want to revert back to Mavericks as a second partition for video work.
Is there any way I can reinstalled an older OS and downgrade my Apple apps like FCP X and Aperture so I can open, edit and produce dvd / bluray of these files.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

Thanks perermac87. I'm can make a second partition on ssd for mavericks as plenty of space, but final cut x 10.1.4 I have now needs Yosemite to open. So how can I also download older versions of my apps from the App Store?

  • Document folder playing hide & seek

I am a new leopard user and found a weird problem on my Powermac g5...
    1) the document folder on my quick launch bar is there and works
    2) the document folder as it appears in stacks is there and works
    3) I goto user\myname\ and the document folder is not there, not accessible
    4) I check the paths for the documents folder through spotlight, quicklaunch etc and they all say it is in \user\myname\
This has not happened on my intel MBPro

Not sure, but it is possible that the Documents folder got its invisible bit set. Take a look at my article on the problem (which usually afflicts drives, but has been known to disappear folders as well):
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
To see if the info applies to you (you'll see the "gray" effect on the icon if it does) go to the Finder's Go menu, select the "Go to Folder..." option and type /users/yourname/Documents, and then select Column view when the window opens. If the Documents folder then appears in the column, and is a pale gray, then it has indeed had the invisible bit set. Several methods are given for fixing the problem in the article.

PS--Be sure to use the correct slashes when you type the path. Just noticed you are using \ when describing your problem. You want the OTHER slash, / (which is at the bottom of the keyboard).

  • Mac Magically and frighteningly booted to my CLONE?!

I just had a situation where I was working on the desktop of my MacPro and then some folders with drivers that I had downloaded seem to have disappeared.
This was around the time I was trying to install one of these and it wanted to install on the EXTERNAL DRIVE that contains my CLONE of this drive.
I am now finding the disappeared folders on the EXTERNAL DRIVE and have moved these to my desktop.
However, the MacPro was making a slightly mechanical noise yesterday and was running a bit slow with icons slow to show up on the desktop etc.
I'm a new mac user and this has me a bit terrified quite frankly.
I've disconnected the external clone and have the Time Machine backup still hooked up.
    Any advice for the newbie?
    Thanks.

    Hi Cathy,
I was working on the Desktop - like looking at the folders on my desktop - and moving them around and organizing data that was within them so they were better organized. This goes here, that goes there, this folder gets deleted because there is no more data in it etc.
And at some point I returned to the Desktop to print something within one of the folders and they WERE NOT THERE. So I had this "huh?" moment.
And then I started thinking about this issue with Aliases (which I don't understand totally) where if I create some kind of Alias for my MacBookPro on my MacPro and put this in some kind of place such as (I guess) the Finder Sidebar - Mac will "helpfully" "resolve" it to point to something on my MAC PRO. I create an Alias for MBP Documents folder and then I put it somewhere on the Mac Pro and it all of a sudden points to Documents on the Mac Pro instead of Documents on the MacBookPro which is what it was pointed to initially.
Anyway, this is so problematic I now have a "screenshots" folder on my MacPro and a "screenshots_MBP" on my MacBookPro so there is no way they can get mixed up like this. ALSO, it helps for me to see where I am on the network if you follow me.
This thing about Short Names and Long Names I have to be honest I totally don't yet understand but I hope to soon.
ANWYAY, the point is that I just ran a CLONED backup to an External Drive recently so that I have a full clone of my system in addition to my other backups and I started to think about why these folders had been there and then suddenly disappeared.
So I went looking in the Desktop folder on the EXTERNAL CLONE and sure enough they were there. On the clone but not on the MacPro. So I posted this thread.
I mean, I am sure there are other explanations for what happened both in terms of what I was actually doing or in terms of what happened but this is my recollection. Not possible?
    Thanks and regards.

  • Some (not all) emails disappearing / deleting themselves from folders in the Mail app on iPhone 4S

I am having an issue with some of my emails disappearing on my iPhone 4S and I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing similar issues and might offer a solution? I have three email accounts on my iPhone 4S and iPad 2 (of which include my iCloud @mac.com and Yahoo!) and all are set up as IMAP so that I can be sure both devices remain in sync at all times. The issue occurs when I go into any of my archive email folders, in any one of my three email accounts and let the iPhone sync with the server so that it is up-to-date. Sometimes - not everytime - I will watch as one of my most recent emails that is cached on the phone suddenly vanishes as it pulls down the rest of the emails archived in that folder. As soon as that email vanishes, it will then automatically remove it from the server (being that it is IMAP) and that email is then gone for good. It has not been moved to trash or any other folder because I can subsequently log into Yahoo! mail for instance and do a complete search for it and it won't find it at all. At first I thought it was my fat thumb (!!!) that had acidentally hit delete on the email but it is happening around twice a week and it has only happened since getting my iPhone 4S. I have contacted Apple support by phone and they suggested completely wiping the phone and restoring from backup, of which I have done. I have changed various settings such as showing 50 recent messages rather than 1000, turing on "organize messages by thread" and "ask before deleting" and trying that for a week but none of that has helped. I have a feeling this is an iOS5 issue rather than a hardware issue because my iPad 2 has started to do the same thing and it never did it before I upgraded to iOS5. Nor did my old iPhone 3GS that I had for two years. I am losing important emails and I'm getting to the stage of thinking about never opening the Mail app on either device for fear of losing any more important emails. I'm considering resorting to logging into Yahoo! and iCloud webmail via Safari instead which is a bit of a pain. Very sorry for the long message but thought i'd best be as thorough as possible. If any of you guys have had similar issues, or if you have any suggestions please feel free to chime in. Many thanks.

Thanks to everyone for their replies - I thought that it was just me with this issue but clearly not. Also thank you to Mil_Prep and S2Linda's suggestions, unfortunately all three of my email accounts do not have a "Mail Days To Sync" option - I believe that this option only appears in Mail settings if the account is an exchange email account. Even if I was able to adjust the time period of emails to sync, I don't think that it would help because the email(s) that are going missing can be as recent as one day old, leaving all my earlier emails in the same folder intact - some of which can go back to the year 2002 for instance. I am still convinced that it is a bug with headers in iOS5. Last week I even had a related problem where I had a new email merge with an old email. The senders email address, subject title and date remained the same but the body of the text was replaced with an old email from 2006! Very odd....
