Disappearing icons in my dock

So my wife and I just purchased our very first iMac. Wicked awesome. But I was playing around with my dock station and accidentally removed the two icons that were originally to the left of the Trash. These were the pdf and download icons. Where did they go and how can I put them back onto the dock? I looked in Finder but couldn't see them. Please help me.

The Downloads folder is at
<startup volume>/Users/<your short user name>/Downloads/
Show the icon for the Downloads folder in any Finder window. Click and hold on it, and drag it to the Dock to the right of the vertical line. Drop it where you want it. Once you drop it, you can drag it around to change the exact location, but if you drop it off the Dock, it disappears in a poof.
Note: You can add any document or folder to the right side of the vertical line. To the left side of the vertical line, you can add any application. Just drag and drop the application icon as you did above. You can remove apps you do not use often from the Dock. Applications are located at
<startup volume>/Applications/
<startup volume>/Applications/Utilities/
I'm not sure what the "pdf" icon is. Could that be the Documents folder? It's located at the same place as Downloads. Just do the same thing.

  • Disappearing Icons in the Dock on Restart

When I restart my computer, the icons in my dock rearrange and two in particular disappear. The same ones disappear each time. HELP!

Removing the com.apple.dock.plist and restarting solved the problem for me too. My problem was that my 'Preview' icon on my Dock became invisible; there was a space where it used to be, and clicking in the space still opened Preview, but you couldn't see it. After doing the procedure above, it brought back the Dock like it was on the original install of Snow Leopard. I just had to drag some applications to the Dock again to make it like it was. And when I dragged Preview to the Dock, it finally appeared! (I had tried repairing the disc from the OS X install disc, etc. and nothing worked before this.) Thanks again soooo much!

  • There's this mysterious appearing/disappearing icon in my Dock...

...that every so often spontaneously opens up, then closes right away. I can never get a good look at it, but it appears to be a white "page" (like the TextEdit dock icon) with what looks like a green part in the upper left corner and a black part in the lower right area.
What application might that icon belong to? And should I worry about it?

To clarify, it doesn't happen after each loading of a webpage -- I'm not even sure if it is triggered by opening a web page at all. Sometimes I'll just be watching the screen and it will happen.
Again, the trouble is that the icon just appears and disappears in the Dock before I can get a good look.
I'll try to take a full-screen snapshot (Command-Shift-3) the next time it appears, and hopefully I'll catch it in time...

Somehow my application icon in the dock has disappeared. I have no idea where it went but it contains all my applications that i use. How do I get the application icon to return  to the dock. Thanks for your help. I am not computer literate by any means. Thanks

Goto your application folder, find your app then drag/drop it back to the dock.

You should consider downloading the 10.6.8 combo updater and applying it again.

  • Disappearing Icons From Dock

Within the past week or so, for no particular reason I can identify, my iTunes icon in my dock has disappeared. There is currently a space where it should be and when I move my cursor over it it says iTunes, but there is no icon. It is like it's invisible. This has also happened recently when I have downloaded content, say a pdf file, that then automatically opens. The Preview app opens the document fine, but then another invisible icon appears (or not, cause it's invisible) in my doc for Preview. Just like the iTunes icon, it's there, and when I move over it with my cursor, it shows it's there, but the graphical icon is just not visible.
Any clues or solutions for this? Thanks!

It may be LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

I have Mac OS10.4.11 with MS Office 2004 for Mac, installed. Yesterday, when clicking on the Entourage icon, in the dock, to receive my Email, the icon disappeared and I lost my Email service from the HD and from Spotlight, as well. Word, Excel and PP are still OK. Could this be a virus?

Just thinking, if things are really missing...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Icons in the dock disappear on wakeup

since upgrading to Mavericks, application icons in the Dock disappear on wakeup or even after full restart.
sometimes it helps if I click on the placeholder in the Dock - it starts the application and the icon re-appears. at other times they all appear ok if I restart the computer.

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, move the following items to the Trash, if they exist:
    Application Support/Dock
    Caches/com.apple.dock
and move the following items to the Desktop:
    Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.dock.*.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.dock.db
    Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Here “*” stands for a long string of letters and numbers.
Next, triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    open $TMPDIR../C
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. A folder should open. Inside it there may be a file named "com.apple.dock.iconcache". If there is, drag it to the Trash.
Log out, log back in, and test. If you still have the issue, put the items on the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

  • How do I replace my printer [Hp 6110 all-in-one] icon in my dock?

My HPprinter icon in my dock had a question mark on it and would not open, so I dragged it to the desktop and it disappeared.  Now how do I replace it?  I have looked in Applications in Finder and cannot find another printer icon that is the same as I had.  I even went to Apple System Preferences and went to Print and Fax and tried to drag and drop the icon picture from there.  It did not work.  And Time Machine does not work with the dock.  Please help.

Never mind a reply.  I saw how to do it.  ☺☺☺☺

I have a problem with iphoto (have a mac book pro): the icon in the dock appears with a question mark, and the application is gone!!! Can someone tell what's going on? Yesterday I had the same problem with itunes: I downloaded the last version (it's free), but I cannot do the same with iphoto, and more important: I need to know what is happening!!! Please help me!

Applications should not disappear all by themselves.
If they are then that coud indicate serious problems with your hard drive.
Backup everything up as quickly as possible.
Using Disk Utility verify your system disk.

  • Printer icon not in dock when printing

Since upgrading to Moutain Lion my printer icon had disappeared from the dock during printing. Previously it would show in dock when I was printing, Now nothing. Still able to print without issue and can see queue by going into System preferences. Do not see a place to make it appea again? Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

I should have mentioned that I already tried removing then adding the printer with no success. I see the printer under system preferences and it is printing normally. Just have no icon appearing in dock when in process of actually printing a page. So since I attach to it wirelessly, I am always concerned it is not printing when I want to. So it means I have to open up System preferences>Printer Queue to make sure it is printing. Would love to get the automatic icon in the dock back in place

  • Widget Icon missing fro Dock after upgrade to 10.6

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I noticed my Widget icon went missing from the dock.
I have also noticed that I cannot put additional application icons in the dock. They will stay there for a few seconds and then disappear. Anybody have any suggestions on what to do ??

This happened to me as well ... eventually. It was working for some time then poof! No matter how many re-installs from different download locations the dock still won't show up. The interesting thing is that after locating where the widgets itself were they would run after all ... just that the dock which I am so used to isn't there anymore. Perhaps thats a good thing and does make the desktop feel like Vista/Windows7 but I would rather have the option to turn the dock on/off at my convenience and keep everything in line.

  • I downloaded keynote on to my mac laptop. Whenever I quit keynote it disappears off of my dock. How do I get it to stay on my dock?

Once I finish using Keynote I quit the application. Usually it stays on my dock but recently it has been disappearing. I have to use my spotlight to find it and bring it back to my dock but it still disappears the next time I quit Keynote or shut down my computer. How can I get Keynote to stay on my dock?

    Easy.
When Keynote is open, drag its icon from the Dock right back onto the Dock.
It's hard to imagine it's that easy, but it is.

  • No dot below Safari icon in the Dock

I've noticed that the dot below the Safari icon in my Dock disappears after a while of no use.  It seems to stay if a page is open but not if it's closed.  Does this mean Safari has quit unexpectedly?   When I click on the Safari icon, it comes back very quickly, faster than if I have actually made it quit.
Something to worry about or not?  No other apps seem to behave this way.

    Try restarting the computer.
If that doesn’t help, try restarting the Dock.
    Restarting the Dock
    Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    Launch Terminal.
Wait until the $ sign shows up.
    Enter the command     killall Dock
Press the enter key on the keyboard. Wait until the prompt shows up.
    Quit Terminal.
