Disappearing Items on Finder Bar

Folks,
I don't know what I may have done, but the items on my finder bar have all disappeared, including the clock app, the wireless indicator, the Spotlight icon keeps flashing and then disappearing... The only items displayed are the menu names (Finder, File, Edit, etc) and the SMS Fan Control app. Yes, I am referring to the menu up on top of the desktop. Is there a file I should delete to reset the items on the Finder bar?
Any help would be much, much appreciated. Oh, and by the way, it works fine on other accounts, except mine (Admin). Thanks all.

The always useful and helpful Apple Forum Folks. Thank you so much! That solved my problem. Truly appreciated. Now I can sleep in peace
Cheers.

  • Where does the system preferences live? mine disappeared by the finder bar

i've lost my system preferences from my finder bar. please tell me how i can retrieve them.
    thanks,

Do you mean it's gone from the Dock (bottom of the screen) or from the apple menu in the top right-hand corner?
If you mean it's no longer in the Dock, just open your Applications folder and drag the System Preferences icon into the Dock.

  • When using Edit Find, I can only type 3 or 4 letters in the Find bar before the letters start disappearing. If I copy/paste a word into the Find bar all the letters will be there. Has anyone else had this problem?

The Find bar opens OK with Edit/Find. I start typing in a word there but it will only allow 3 letters before they disappear and my next keystroke appears. I can copy/paste a whole word or string of words into the Find bar and all the letters remain.

See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Very many thanks to you, Putaro!  Your answer provided the solution. It was a buggy plug-in that turned out to be the culprit.
You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!

  • HT6065 after the update, my time, name, etc - all disappeared from the right upper finder bar.  Anyone else have this issue?

after the update, my time, name, etc - all disappeared from the right upper finder bar.  Anyone else have this issue?

First, make sure they are all still enabled in the respective System Preferences.
If the are, then do you have any third-party menu extras? They will often interfere with the others if they are not compatible.

  • Find Bar disappears ?

I open 2 tabs with two difffernt web pages loaded in each. I search for a specific word in a web page by Ctrl+F in one tab. However, when I switch to the other tab to search the other loaded web page for the same word, the Find Bar dissappears. Is there a way to keep the Find Bar permenently displayed like other tool bars as I shift between tabs? Does the Safri keep the words entered in Find Bar saved across tabs rather then me entering the word to be found each time in the find bar?

Not sure why that was unchecked but good to know!
Apple's new default (since at least a couple of OS releases back) is to have it off so OS X matches the behavior of an iPhone or iPad.
I almost never need a scroll bar, and when I do, I just move over to the edge of the window when scrolling and a larger scroll bar appears.
Yes, for the most part, users don't really need the scroll bar. That's what the scroll wheel on almost all mice is for. Saves the trip over to bar to physically grab and move it. But, I do like it on all the time regardless. That way (especially with a long article) I can just take a quick glance over to the bar to see about where I am on the page (a third of the way down? halfway?). Otherwise, I have to move the page just to make it appear to give me the same information.

  • Having problem with display of full name in finder bar!

As shown in the image above, my full name in finder bar is not showing properly. When I select 'icon' from system preferences it shows correctly, but when I select full name or short name, it touches the top.
    Help me fixing this issue!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in as yourself. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
    Test again. Same problem now?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • Programs have started to shut down my finder bar (iPhoto, iTunes, Photobooth) and now it happens when I try to access my iPhone4 in iTunes. I have a Black Macbook running 10.5.8

I have a black Macbook running 10.5.8. A while ago iPhoto stopped opening. Time Machine also stopped working properly- it would back up for about 10 gB and then would stop. Photobooth also then began to stop working correctly; it would make my finder bar disappear if I opened it requiring me to shut down the computer and restart. Last week when I went to sync my iPhone4 the same thing happened. Last night I couldn't even open my iPhone4 in iTunes when I tried, closing iTunes and removing the finder bar again. I have been to the Genius Bar and it appears that my harddrive is okay. I have repaired permissions but still this keeps happening. Any ideas on what to do?

Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click Get Info.
    See: Capacity
Before deleting anymore files, verify the startup disk.
    Open Disk Utility   /Applications/Utilites
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions).
If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks.
If the startup disk is ok, try installing the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update.
that I can't access my app store to set it up.
Just so you are aware, you use iTunes to sync, restore, and backup an iPhone, not the App Store for Mac OS X.

  • Icons in finder bar; what do they mean and how to get rid of them

Hi I notice these icons in my finder bar. I'm confused; what are they there for and how to get rid of them?
    Thanks for the help!

One is a Flash movie project and the other two a PDF files - you usually have them in your Finder window bar because you've dragged them to that location. You can get rid of them by selecting the icon with the Command key held down and drag them to the Desktop - poof! - they'll disappear.

  • If i neglect to create a mobile account when first signing in, finder bar doesn't display

I have a fairly large office environment with hundreds of Macs that are connected to our Active Directory managed domain.  Sometimes a new user will try to log in to a machine for the first time but if they neglect to create a mobile account, the finder bar doesn't display properly at the top of the desktop.  It will appear briefly when something is clicked on the dock but will disappear again as soon as the desktop or anything else is clicked.  It doesn't even appear when Finder is clicked on the dock.  What's more, when mobile account isn't created, the user account doesn't appear in System Preferences> Users & Groups so a mobile account can't be created after the fact, nor can the user account be deleted in order to start from scratch.  This will happen regardless of the OS version, between 10.6 and 10.9. The only solution I've found is a complete rebuild of the OS on the computer in question which I can't do every time someone doesn't know to choose creation of a mobile account.
Has anyone else run into this?  And if so, what solutions have you found?
    Thanks.

    Hi Russ!
Apparently you already configured your account but you don't have nor the key or the password. You can get the password in the [https://account.services.mozilla.com/forgot following link] but you would need the Sync Key to sync your device to the rest of your devices.
If you don't have the Sync Key the best thing you can do is to reset it, by deleting the previous account and creating a new one with the same user. You can perform this tasks from your [https://account.services.mozilla.com/ account dashboard].

  • Items on task bar have a strange problem.

As you can see in the following picture, the items on task bar (especially the windows) are not touching the bottom. I mean if I click the area below the blue underline, it won't open the window and is just like clicking on an empty area on the task bar.
I am finding this very annoying since it forces you pay attention to where you are clicking. My task bar settings is set to show small icons and I just updated to build 10061. Is there a solution, like registry edit that will solve this issue.
    - W.H.

Some folks like the Taskbar to be smaller and thus less intrusive. The problem is not the choice of small buttons, but the fact that the overly large Taskbar no longer shrinks to fit them.

  • Shared Items in Finder??

    Hi
Ive noticed seven shared iMac items in Finder, Ive no idea what they r or how to remove them. See attached file. Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Baz

You do reboot or somehow restart when you are on your different network, right?
I suggest going to System Preferences (under the Apple logo in the menu bar), choose the "General" tab, and check "Close windows when quitting an application."

  • Reset printer settings....still no print....plus added items to menu bar...they're gone

reset printer settings....still no print....plus added items to menu bar...they're gone from bar & customize window...title bar changed

Firefox doesn't print some pages well, but if you have this problem on all pages, there may be some problem with Firefox's ability to work with your printer driver. If it's only particular pages, can you post the URLs for an assessment?
I'm not clear on what happened with Cut, Copy & Paste: you moved them from the menu drop-down to the toolbar and then they disappeared?
If you return to Customize mode, try clicking Restore Defaults and see whether things return to normal.
When you say "toolbar background" do you mean a theme you were using in an earlier version of Firefox? Otherwise, there's not much to see.
If Firefox is becoming transparent or showing some desktop or showing other display glitches it may be incompatible with your graphics card drivers. The standard workaround for that is to disable Firefox's use of hardware acceleration for graphics.
3-bar menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
This will take effect the next time you exit out of Firefox and restart it.

  • Viewing items in Finder full screen

I seem to remember reading somewhere that when viewing finder items in cover flow (at least I think it was in cover flow), you could make the item appear full screen size, or at least very large.
Is this right? If so how?
    Thanks!
    DanK

I believe you mean the slide show. select some items in Finder (in any view not just coverflow) and enter commandoptiony. this will get you to the slideshow view. you can also use Quicklook by hitting the space bar.

  • Missing clock, volume etc in top finder bar amongst other issues in Snowlep

    Hello Guys,
I was just wondering if anyone else is having this problem and if there is a resolution.
    a) in my finder bar at the top the clock and everything is invisible, when I try to change any settings for this finder crashes and when they do decide to be visible I cannot do anything with them as the color wheel is present when I scroll over them.
    b) My battery is lasting about 20 minutes, I had a new battery, charger and connections under my apple care within the last 12 months and now it is telling me battery needs to be replaced.
c)When my battery is clost to dead the warning that comes up flashes every 10 seconds regardless whether I tell it to or not and is drinving me insane.
any thoughts on any of these?
Thanks for your thoughts guys and gals
    Timmy

Go to /username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ and move the com.apple.windowserver.XXXXXX.plist files to the Desktop, log out and back in, and those items should be displayed. If so, delete the moved plist files.
