Disappearing Mail viewer window

I just started having a strange problem with Apple Mail application. Mail works fine for a few minutes following a restart, but after a few minutes, the view window disappears. It's not hidden, minimized, and Spaces is not enabled. Mail shows as running, but the window is simply gone. Quiting and restarting Mail does not resolve the problem, nor does relogging in. Only restarting the Mac works, and then only for a few minutes. Anyone else having this problem? I suspect it may be associated with some kind of bizarre .Mac syncing issue.

I think I have a solution. I had a hunch it had something to do with spaces because re-enabling spaces brought back the missing window.
What seems to happen is that the mail window is moved to some space even though spaces is turned off. What seemed to solve it, is deleting all informationen from spaces, i.e. in which space programs should live. In my case mail was assigned to space 3.
I haven't had time to thoroughly test it but everything seems fine for now.
The time machine backup probably only worked because it went back to a state before spaces was enabled for the first time. Or maybe it's altogether a different though similar looking problem that I had.
-c.

  • CHANGING BACKGROUND COLORS ON MAIL VIEW WINDOW?

The light blue area on the left of the mail view window seems to not have enough contrast to clearly read the number of emails sitting in a particular mailbox. Is there any way to customize the background color to make this more readable?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

Bruce, do you see the darker blue background to increase the contrast with the number, or just the white number on the light blue background?
    should look like this:

  • Mail Viewer window does not behave according to Apple User Guidelines

I offer this up hoping that an Apple Mail engineer will see it.
Why, oh why can we not click on an open, visible Mail Viewer window in the background and bring it up to the frontmost application unless that click happens in the Mail Viewer Toolbar???
No other application misbehaves this way.
Long overdue for a fix, imo.

this does not need a fix as it doesn't behave like that (on my Mac).
Any part of that window that sticks out behind the top view application is enough to bring that window forward.

  • Mail Viewer Window Does Not Open on Launch. Mail Will Not Quit. MAIL BADGER

<UPDATE> After detailing all of the problems below, I discovered that trashing the Mail Badger bundle solved all of the below problems. I am still posting this just in case anybody else has this problem.
    Problems:
    1. When opening mail.app, the program opens, but it does not launch a Viewer Window. I can open a viewer window manually from the File menu, however.
    2. When quitting mail.app, it will not quit. It does not matter whether I hit command-Q, or Mail>Quit Mail, or right-click on dock icon and click Quit. The only way for me to quit is Force Quit. No matter what Quit command I execute, nothing happens. The Viewer Window does not close. (The Viewer Window will close on command, however, either by clicking the red 'x' or by command-W, or by File>Close.
    3. Cannot send mail from mail.app. Upon clicking "send" on a new email, it just goes to the Outbox and sits there forever. I can try sending the email again from the Outbox, but nothing happens. (I have 4 gmail accounts, with a couple thousand messages between them. There are no problems with port configurations or smtp servers or anything like that - I am fairly certain anyway because nothing has changed w/ regard to the account settings between the time it was working and the time it stopped working.)
    4. After minimizing the Viewer Window, clicking on the mail.app dock icon does not restore the Viewer Window. The only way to restore the Viewer Window is to click on the Viewer window itself in the dock, rather than clicking on the application icon.
Notes: I have installed 10.4.10. I have also installed Safari Beta 3.0.2
I previously installed Safari Beta 3.0, then uninstalled it and upgraded to 3.0.2. I don't recall when the problems started, (under 3.0 or 3.0.2), but they all happened at the same time (rather than one at a time).
I have uninstalled Safari 3 and reverted to Safari 2, but this does not fix the problems.
    I have repaired disk permissions.
I have booted from the OS X Install disk and repaired my startup disk.
I have not had any problems with Safari 3 "hanging" on install, thus corrupting the WebKit, as described in other threads.

I had the same issue and resolution. Spotlight search for "Mail Badger" and deleting everything resolves the issue.
    I'm also running Safari 3.0.2 and 10.4.10...
I've emailed the developer to let him know about it..

  • Mail viewer window doesn't open

Just bought a new Mac (of course, the new software comes out next month), I transferred my old stuff from Time Capsule, everything works except Mail. When I open Mail no viewer window appears. When I try to open one nothing happens. When I try to quit I have to force quit the application. Tried searching for resolutions, but everything that comes up is related to 10.5; cant figure out how to restrict the search to 10.7.

I don't suppose it's already running? Try force quit just to see if it's running.

  • Duplicate Mail Viewer Window appearing without apparent reason

This isn't a leopard Mail problem per se. It was exactly the same in Tiger and stayed this
way after an archive and install (preserve settings).
I connect via imap to a server (Novell groupwise)
If I click and hold on the Junk folder icon and do Delete Junk Mail
This works, but automatically also opens up a new Mail window with all the folders to the left
etc as if I asked it to open a New Viewer Window.
It also happens some other times but I can't recall the conditions.
Yes, I have tried moving the preference file out to the desktop
and no, there is nothing special in any rules. I just have the Junk rule
    and stop rule, stock standard.

    Hi Peter,
Since it is a different provider, I guess we can't just blame the provider.
The only thing that seems to work with the iPad is to tell the unit to delete the email account information and then reenter the information manually. Doing that every few days is getting frustrating for the users over on the other forum.
That may be the only solution for your case, delete the account information and reenter all of it. If you go that route, I would say get rid of all of it, not just the password item. Something strange is going on here with OS's resetting information unilateraly.

  • Mail Viewer Window and Email Opening Issues

About a week ago I began having some significant problems using Mail on 10.5.8 that I have never had before. I opened Mail, only to find that while it opened on my menu bar and I had the little circle indicating it was open in my dock, no Viewer Window opened. Also, I couldn't quit the app without Force Quitting through the Apple menu in the menu bar. I could right click on the icon in the dock and open a Compose Email or a New Note window, however it would not allow me to send said composed email. Instead, Mail would hang and I would have to force quit as "Application not Responding". The beach ball would also be evident and a Force Quit required.
A buddy recommended trying to open a Viewer Window through the File folder in the menu. I did that, a viewer window DID open and mail synced itself up to allow my inbox to show all recent emails I had received and read. Unfortunately, if I clicked on any email in my inbox, it would not load the email in the preview pane or open the email with a double click. Instead I would get a message saying "Loading" and the beach ball reappeared. Force Quit required.
I found some solution somewhere which suggested rebuilding the database by moving the Envelope Index to my desktop from Home/Library/Mail to allow it to rebuild. I did this and it rebuilt a new Envelope Index, but the same problems exist. Frankly, I only have about 100-125 emails in my system so it is not exactly an overburdened mail system. I also do not have any mail haxies which would be causing this. Any thoughts or solutions? I would like to be able to check mail from somewhere other than the Mobile Me web browser app. Thanks.

Not trying to be "That Guy" but I am bumping in the hopes that someone has a solution to this annoying and vexing issue. Thanks.

  • New Viewer Window disappears

I am running Yosemite 10.10.1 on my Air. This evening my mail viewer window shrank to two (from three) columns, then to a single message preview (quite wide, I must add), then disappeared. When I select New Viewer Window from the File menu, this very brief window flashes by, then disappears.
I have repaired the disk and permissions to no improvement. The console log reads thus:

  • How to fix the positions of two Mail.app viewer windows on the screen?

I use Mail.app as my main IMAP Mail application. I work with two Mail viewer windows which I position on the screen so that the upper window shows the Inbox and the lower window the Send-box. The windows are aligned to each other and do not overlap. Fine.
But when I quit Mail.app and open the program again, the windows have forgotten their postions. They "jump" to a new location on the screen. This is in contrast to all other applications I use. Another bad example of window managment is the Mail.app-Preferences window which also does not stick to a given position.
Is this a (known?) bug or does it only happen on my Macs? (two: one in the office, one at home, both running 10.4.6)

I guess the difference is that my description text is longer.
Try this text for a new rule:
"From: blacklisted senders 1 - move to SPAM-blacklisted-addresses"
When you want to see this text completely with the default font, you will need to enlarge the Preferences window for "Rules". After that, click to "Signatures": the window stays at the enlarged width. Then click on any of the other areas in Preferences, and the window goes back to the "normal" width. When you then click on either "Signatures" or "Rules", the Preferences window will stay at the "normal" width (resulting in a truncated display of the rule description text).
Also: when you have moved the Preferences window to a position not covered by a (large) viewer window to access it with a mouse click, close the window and re-open Preferences, it is back to a position covered by the viewer window. Again not accessible when the viewer window is the front-most Mail.app window. BTW: the "Activity viewer" window does a better job in sticking to a fix position.

  • Missing Mail view??

I upgraded to Yosemite.  After lots of problems got it done.  Mail works fine.  But yesterday I moved my mail folder and plist from a back up and now I am missing my mail view window.   I have the mail window.  The column with the mail boxes is fine.   Column with the emails showing short previews is fine.
But the next column, where a full message would show up if I selected a message, is blank?
If I double click on a message I get a separate window with the full message.   But what happened to the view column?

  • Customizing mail viewer

    Hi,
relative came back from the apple store in tampa with a new macbook, says that they configured his Email for him while he was there and that they set up MacMail so that the mail viewing window was placed on the right side of the mail screen instead of underneath the list of retrieved Emails, when he updated the OS the macmail had reverted to the what I assume is the default configuration with the the viewer below the mail list, I ran repair permissions but I can't find a control pane to manipulate the viewer screen, any ideas?
    scotty

Is it possible that what was described was just lowering the bar below the message list to the bottom, so that the 'mail viewing window' becomes a separate (unattached) one when a message is selected for viewing?

  • MBA lion Mail issue: window disappears randomly

    hello:
Having some MBA 13' mail issues:
    1) mail window will disappear (only using cmd+0 shortcut will bring it back - or going to window>message viewer) randomly without any reason
    2) starting up a new email or new note then closing this note or email will close the entire message viewer window...why?
    3) emails deleted within the 'inbox' section will not delete in the Gmail section (setup as IMAP, with Gmail defaults)
I am a little concerned with 1 & 2 becuase these are huge user experience issues, it is the most frustrating thing to have to continually use the short cut to open up a window which should not have disappeared in the first place!!
any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

    Hi Fred
I've got the same issue. It seems to happen randomly but so annoying when it does. Upgrading to Mountain Lion hasn't helped and I've changed my keyboard and reset all the short-cuts to the default settings and still it happens in Mail and Microsoft Outlook for Mac when I'm typing a mail.
    Did you find a solution?

  • TS3276 cannot open viewer window in mail?

Cannot open viewer window in mail 8.1? os10.10.1: screen flashes a banner and disappears.

Try checking the View menu...I'm not sure of the exact command. Or when you select a message to read, click and drag the bar between the messages and the viewer up and down.

  • In Mail, I can not open a viewer window

I just had my hard drive replaced on my 27 inch imac.  It came back with a new operating system (OSX10.7.5)  Along with that it had several software updates. One of which was Mail.  It is now at version 5.3.  When I went to open it, it asked to transfer over all the old to the new.  So it did but once that was over it never opened a viewer window.  I then went to FILE to "Open viewer window".  That didn't work either.  I right clicked on the Mail icon in my dock and it said it wasn't responding so I had to force quit.  Same results happen everytime I open MAIL.  Please help.

With Mail open press Command + Option + Esc to force quit the Mail app.
Then restart your Mac and try Mail.
