Disappearing Masters menu

I love Keynote and try to convert as many of my PPT files as I can, but version 3.0.1 is driving me mad with what seem to be bugs -- I'm trying to track down exactly when this happens, but I'd like to ask: is this just me?
After opening a Powerpoint file, changing the theme, and adding a few new slides, my Masters menu (toolbar) suddenly shrinks into only 1 option, usually (always?) the simple bullet master.
Is anyone else getting this?
Is there any other way to choose a different master for a new slide?
As I said, I'll try to track this down better, but what do people think. Is it a problem with my custom template? Is it a problem with importing from Powerpoint? Or is it something else I need to check?

Yes, it's deliberate. It's tied to the feature in Keynote that lets you choose masters for only specific slides. The effect only applies to the master slide pop-down, and which ever slide you're currently on. Click a slide, and you can only see the masters associated with that slide. Drag in some more, and those masters associated with the new slide you dragged in only show when you select the new slide.
I got bit by this while making a new theme and had to copy and paste slides from the larger group, then change them and delete the slides from the smaller group. Now all my masters show in the drop menu.
The only way around this is to do what I did, or to just always have the master slides showing in the side bar, so you can just grab one and drag it onto a slide to apply it, as you've been doing.

Since Mavricks installed: My Spotlight icon disappears from the menu bar, but the space stays there. If I click on the blank space where the
spotlight icon is supposed to be - the spotlight menu opens. So, for me, the icon is there, it works except that it is invisible at times. IF I do a re-start it is there. If I let the computer set, sleep or other wise stay on for days, the icon will hide and re-appear at random.

Open your System Preferences and go to the "Network" pane. Enable "Show Wi-Fi status in Menu Bar".

Sophos disappears from menu

Unless you're required to install Sophos by an organization, I suggest you remove it according to the developer's instructions. It serves no real purpose and is likely to cause instability and poor performance.

Recordsets disappear from menu when adding mysql_query ("SET NAMES 'utf8'"); below the connection in php

I hope someone can help with this. I'm trying to create a
dynamic site using dreamweaver CS3, with php5 and mysql5 in the
background but I'm having difficulty with recordsets disappearing
from the server behaviour menu when tweaking the code to allow set
characters or set names for utf8.
For a while, I've been having a problem getting my
dynamically generated master list pages (eg lists of jobs) to
display international characters like an accented french e (and
other languages) and for these to display correctly when viewed in
phpmyadmin also. So, I've placed headers at the top of the page for
utf8 and created the content metatag for utf8 in the page code.
Where needed I've added ENT_QUOTES utf etc for htmlentities and
added accept-charset utf-8 in the <form> action area.
(one thing I haven't done in the form action area is add
<enctype="multipart/form-data">, but I'm not sure if this
will make any difference)
In the backend, the innoDB database is collated and built
using utf8_unicode_ci. I'm on a shared host -so can't directly
access php.ini or adjust the connection settings through
phpmyadmin. But I can write .htaccess files (currently with the
defaultcharset set to utf8 also).
At this point - all list pages display the correct characters
when retrieved from the database - indicating that the headers are
working. But - in phpmyadmin the letters are garbled, and garbled
on return on update forms (content management). I solved this by
adding the &#xxxx; equivalents in insert and update forms to
display the text correctly on the list pages - but again it's not
convenient to see all of this in phpmyadmin, as I'd like to be able
to read it there as it should be, and to dispense with the need to
add &#xxxx references on the insert and update forms.
So...a bit of searching, and I read that in order for the
international characters to display in phpmyadmin correctly, I
needed to amend my php page code so that for all instances where I
see the connection to the database, before the SELECT, INSERT and
DELETE queries, I need to add either mysql_set_charset('utf8',
$connection) or use three lines of code referencing mysql_query SET
NAMES, SET CHARACTER SET and SET COLLATION_CONNECTION for utf8.
I did that, and it removed all of my recordsets in the
sidebar menu! Not too good. I'm left with a task of rebuilding
pages now.
So I placed the mysql_set_charset line in the connection.php
file in the DW Connections folder below the connection there
instead. [I didn't precede the mysql etc line with a $ sign - I
wonder if that's the issue?]
With this change I could use the Insert forms to add the
international characters directly into the database and see through
phpmyadmin that all was hunky dory. But then the problems came with
first loads of the master list page.
So, I can get international characters into the database now
(which is a step in the right direction for me), using an insert
form on the website, but I still can't get the international
characters to display on the returned page on first loading eg on a
list of jobs. Note that the detail pages display fine when clicking
the master links, and when I return from the detail page back to
the master list - the characters are ok. They just don't seem to
display when the master page loads for the first time which is
really perplexing me.
I suspect that I need to add the mysql_set_charset line below
the $connection and before the selects, inserts etc at all
instances on the webpage, but this just removes the recordset from
the menu, so this doesn't seem to be a good option.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as I'm been stuck
on this for ages. It may be something simple like adding $ in front
of the mysql_query, but then again maybe not.
I've tried other forums - but people seem to be content with
viewing but not offering assistance. I don't believe that what I'm
doing here hasn't been done before....all I want is for my pages to
display international characters and for these to display correctly
in phpmyadmin so that when I insert, update and delete records
using webforms I don't have to resort to using &#xxx inserts.

Usually you only need to send a SET NAMES 'utf8' right after
the
connection to the DB has been established. That way all data
that is
transferred between the DB and your script will be handled as
UTF-8.

I've never used mysql_set_charset().
Here in my applications it always works like this:
* the default charset in my InnoDB tables is ISO-8859-1, I
only use
UTF-8 in the columns that really need it (text data, but not
INT or
DATE columns)
* SET NAMES 'utf8' at the beginning
* all files (HTML and PHP) are encoded as UTF-8 without BOM
* all pages delivered as UTF-8 (my pages are
script-generated, so I use
an appropriate header() call to define the content-type and
encoding)
That's it. Oh, and I don't use phpMyAdmin ...

In the first part of your posting it sounded as if it worked
almost
correctly, before you tried to fix the broken phpMyAdmin
appearance.
Is that correct?

They did display correctly first, didn't they? So it seems
that you
broke your script just in order to fix some PMA problem.
Revert that.
Make your script work for normal input/output from/to a
website first
and don't worry about PMA for now.
What do you need PMA for BTW? It may have many other issues
as well and
should only be used if really necessary or if you're not
familiar with
the command line interface. The only thing that we are using
it is to
get a dump from a remote DB, where I don't have shell access
to call
mysqldump directly (yes, I could also write a little PHP
script for
that, it's already somewhere on my TODO). But here on my
local system I
always use the MySQL command prompt if I have to directly
work on some
tables or to import the dump from remote.
Anyway, if you need PMA, your might try their group or forum.
I'm sure
there's an FAQ as well. Maybe it's just a configuration
issue.

Spark ComboBox in mx control - Disappearing DropDown Menu

Hey Everyone!
I have a problem displaying a spark combobox as an item editor in an mx data grid. Since I've been trying to figure it out for some time without any luck I thought one of you guys might have a hint for me.
The situation:
One of my columns is supposed to provide a Spark ComboBox to edit the entries:

Sorry, I clicked "send" too soon.
The problem is that the combobox opens its drop down menu but if you click on the scrollbar to get to the entries at the bottom of the list it simply disappears. Did anyone run into a similar problem? Does it have something to do with putting a spark component into an mx data grid?

How do you restore a disappeared Top Menu in Thunderbird 24.4.0

I have Thunderbird under Ubunbtu in two Lenovo notebook computers. After the automatic update to version 17, the Top Menu disappeared from one computer. This is a quite annoying bug, as Thunderbird is always maximised, as there are no buttons to close or minimize, so Thunderbird completely covers over the menu buttons for the operating system.
With every update from version 18 to version 24 of Thunderbird, I hoped this bug would disappear, but it remains. Upgrading the Ubuntu operating system from version 12.04 to 12.10 to 13.10 to 14.10 made absloutely no difference. Thunderbird has no Top Menu and no Close or Minimise button.
Some said they stopped this bug by setting mail.tabs.drawInTitlebar to "false". It makes no difference to either computer setting this to either "true" or "false." One computer retains a Top Menu (Title bar" and the other never gets one. I am not using any themes, and I have many times compared EVERY setting between one thunderbird installations and the other, and there is no difference (except one has my email and the other has my wife's email.)

ALL Finder Files Disappeared • Blinking Menu Bar • No Access to iDisk

There have been a chain of events within the last week that makes me so mad with Apple. In March 2008, I had spent £2,000 on the top of the line MacBook Pro (one of many machines I own, all mac).
1. Six days ago, ALL files and folders disappeared from the Desktop without trace.
2. Two days ago, the right hand side of the Menu Bar started blinking on & off.
3. Two days ago, I have not had access to my iDisk.
1. No other reports to offer. I looked around for the files but they were nowhere to be seen.
2. Mac user since 1991. I own various machines but this particular problem lies with a MacBook Pro 2008 using 10.5.4
The laptop has two users. One is fine while one is not. A new user was created but upon logging in for the first time the right hand side of the menu bar blinked off and on just like the existing user. No hard drives have been connected. All files backed up via drag and drop wirelessly.
3. Since this development I have been unable to get to my iDisk; it might be related or coincidental with problem number 2. Last night I re-entered my .mac/MobileMe account details whereupon I was presented with a message saying the machine had not synced before. Not true. It had been syncing automatically since the day of purchase March 2008. I wonder if there is a connection between somewhere deep down in the Library, updated versions for 10.5.4 and MobileMe. Somewhere along the line a combination of events triggered the tool bar to start blinking...
It's strange how one user is fine (seldom used and DOES NOT have a MobileMe account) while the main one, me, is not fine (used heavily throughout the day and DOES have an active MobileMe account).
At this point, I don't intend to re-install and start all over again (I've done this so many times with other machines over the years that I was hoping those days had finally gone based upon Apple's brilliant recent advancements).
I don't care nor wish to hear about backing al files up with Time Machine (I back up regularly), I would like to get to the point of understanding why any or all of the aforementioned problems happened in the first place so it doesn't happen again.

Try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
Now test. If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

Disappearing file menu on os x 10.4

shake intermittently disables all the entries in the 'File' menu on one of our machines. shake 4.1 on OS X 10.4.11, Mac Pro intel. Seems to only affect one user. No custom scripts on the users ~/nreal. Strange.
I've seen disappearing menu bars in shake 4.0 under 10.3, a quick wipe of the mouse fixed that but this necessitates a shake restart.
Anyone else had this problem?

It works now. I had been connecting by doing the following:
Finder menu > Go > Network > double-clicking on the description of the Tiger machine in the resulting list
Finder then indicated that I was connected as a guest.
After your recommendation, I tried connecting by doing the below:
Finder menu > Go > Connect to Server... > then connecting to the IP address (Internet Protocol address) of the Tiger machine.
Then the dialog window that you described, with the option to connect as a guest or a registered user, appeared.
After using the latter method of connecting, I can now also connect as a registered user with Finder menu > Go > Network > double-clicking on the description of the Tiger machine.

Search Disappears from Menu (after expanding Mini Player)

Hi there I'm on Android 4.3 mobile using Spotify version 3.1.0.1113. The Search option disappears from the main top left menu every time I use the app. I have narrowed it down to happening right after expanding the mini-player from the bottom of the screen. I can open the app and use it normally, but once I click the new mini-player (the new version that allows swiping to change songs) to bring up the main player screen, Search will disappear from the top left menu, leaving just Browse/Activity/Radio/etc. I can bring back Search by closing the app and reopening it. I have tried other 3.1 versions, including Betas, and this always happens. Any ideas? Thanks

After you search for the artist, *Ctrl click* the arrow after the artist name to see all items by that artist in yoru library, then play and open the mini player.
Better yet, instead of search, simply turn on the browser (iTunes menu View -> Column browser) then select the Artist to see everything by that artist.

All fonts disappearing from menu?

Has anyone else observed this irritating behaviour?
After a variable amount of running time all the fonts in my font menu become "white-on-white" and thus effectively disappear. The same applies to the variants (bold, regular, italic, etc.).
The fonts are still there -- if you click on one the menu disappears and the font shows up in the proper place and the text is the correct font. Of course that doesn't help much if you can't remember which font is represented by the blank space you are clicking on.
The only way I've found to remedy this problem is to quit and restart InDesign.
Does anyone have an explanation or a solution?

Disappearing microphones menu

When I select my camera (a Sony EyeToy) from the Preferences menu under Microphones, I get as my only option: "Eye Toy USB Namtai"
But when I select this option, the Micophones menu disappears completely!
The upshot of this is that in a video chat, my buddy can see and hear me, and I can see him but cannot hear him (he has the same camera).
We cannot seem to figure this out and hope that you can.
I am running iChat AV 3.1.8 and OSX 10.4.9 on a Mac Mini G4/1.25, with 1 GB of RAM.

Some connection devices do have protection about Too Much Data coming to you Too Quickly.
This was designed to stop any web server you may be running being attacked like they used to be with groups of people all asking for the same page at the same time.
The action is called Denial of Service Protection.
It come in the different forms.
1) Denial of Service
2) Quality of Service
3) Stateful Packet Inspection
On some devices this is an On/Off setting.
On some it can be adjusted
Video chats can bump into some of these settings and is more likely to be seen as error 7 (No Data for 10 secs) and the call stopped/failed).
From the way you describe this it seesm that you more likely have a onnection that is not that stable in terms of speed.

In win 7, disappeared firefox menu, toolbars; can't access reset

Using Win 7 64-bit. Everything suddenly disappeared from firefox except the URL line. When I ran a checkdisk, there was corruption in a bunch of files. May have caused the problem. Went to try the mozilla support reset suggestion. Can't do it because I have no Firefox icon in top left corner to click and thus can't get into Help menu or anything except what I can access through the URL line. Can't find any other advice on what to do. Is uninstalling Firefox and starting over the only answer? Won't I lose bookmarks, add ons, etc? Thanks.

hello jgdolan, please try closing all firefox windows and then holding the shift key while you launch it again - this will bring up firefox safe mode with the option to reset the browser.

"Share" word has disappeared from menu bar - can't burn DVD

I know I burned a DVD in the distant past by clicking on "Share - burn DVD" in the menu bar but the word "Share" seems to have disappeared from my menu bar. I upgraded from iPhoto 5 to 6 (I think). What happened to the "Share" word and how do I get it back? If I reinstall from my original discs, won't I get the iPhoto 5 version?? Will my recent photos disappear?? Thanks for any help.

When you're in iPhoto go to the iPhoto menu in the upper left hand corner of the menu bar and select About iPhoto. That will give you the version of iPhoto you have.
If you tried to run an iPhoto 6 updater on iPHoto 5 that may be the reason you're having trouble with iPhoto. Check the version and post back.
If you have iPhoto 6 then go to the View->Show in Tool Bar menu option and see if what you want is checked or unchecked. Those items will show up in the bottom tool bar.
