Disappearing Movie Files

I made a movie in iMovie a few months ago but didn't have time to burn it onto a dvd when I finished. I went back to it a few days ago to burn it, but the movie files will not play. You can still see the movie in the timeline section but there are little yellow triangles with exclamation marks in the corners of each clip. When I try to play the movie, the music is all you hear, and the screen is black. Does anyone know how I can get the movie back with out all starting over again? Thanks.

Hello Rpc30,
There are a couple of options I have that should remedy your situation.
The first would be to delete and re-download the items that have an exclamation mark, then redownload them from the iTunes store.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

The other option would be to search for the missing movies manually.

  • Chapters disappear after saving movie file

I have added chapters to my movie file using the instructions here:
    http://images.apple.com/quicktime/pdf/QuickTime7UserGuide.pdf
    (page )
but when I save my movie file, the chapters and the text file that supported the chapters disappear!
_Could anyone please let me know how to save the chapters into the movie file?_
    Thanks!

Be sure to check the console window .. this won't be an error message that pops up .. maybe you already know that, but just wanted to make sure.
I'll have to test this in FM10. I use (and make) DITA-FMx where this works fine, but will test it in default FM-DITA and see if there's a problem. Do you have the latest FM10 patches installed? I do recall some issues with table conrefs in early FM10, but think they were fixed later .. the current version is 10.0.2.419.
    ... testing ...
OK, just tested it and sure enough, it doesn't seem to work .. conreffing either rows or cells .. it works when you insert it, but doesn't resolve when opened. The data is still valid, but it just doesn't render in FM. When I open the files I created in FM10 (default DITA support) with DITA-FMx, the conrefs show up just fine. If you really need table conrefs, it might just be a good reason to buy DITA-FMx ..

  • Movie file disappeared

Please help. I recently exported a Quicktime movie file from Final Cut Studio 2 into my Western Digital My Book, but when I opened Final Cut today, the file was gone! I can still access the Quicktime movie version from the external hard drive, but the file as it existed in Final Cut has disappeared. Where could it have gone? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I don't know what happened, but I restored a previous version and the file was there. Just thought I'd share the info.

  • Trash misbehaving.  Can't move files or folders to trash without triggering "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."

Help!  I suddenly find that I cannot move files to trash without triggering a Finder dialogue box that asks me to type in a password to continue.  When I comply, files and folders that have been moved to trash simply disappear from the desktop!  Nothing appears in the trashcan.  I'm using Lion 10.7.5 and have never noticed this behavior until today.  What's happening here?

Try recreating the Trash file, because this is a problem related to permissions. Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities) and type:
    sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash

  • Code Execution in Cover Flow View and .mov Files

There is a code inside QuickTime movies that gets executed in Cover Flow view in Leopard!!!!!!!!.
I was helping a friend installing Leopard on his machine, and after restarting, I was showing him the new options in the Finder, when a found a bunch of videos (searched on his computer with Spotlight) and switched to 'Cover Flow View', and then Safari started opening web pages from the internet (Mostly adult sites).
After doing some tests I've noticed that the pages load the moment the Finder 'refines' the view of the videos. You know when the Finder first generates a blocky image of the video (some times called proxy image) and then generates a higher or cleaner resolution of that same video.
Not only that, if I resize the window or the preview pane, the code executed again and Safari opened the pages again!!!!
The Finder also executed the code in icon view with the 'Show Icon Preview' option selected in 'View Options' (Command-J).
Opening the videos in QuickTime Player did not trigger the code. But I've noticed that the videos start playing the moment they open. The Inspector (Command-I) didn't show anything unusual. But the Properties window (Command-J in QuickTime Pro) show a "Sprite Track" of Format 'Sprite' but again the different tabs (Annotations, Resources, Visual Settings or Other Settings) didn't show anything unusual.
*CORRECTION: The code also gets executed at the middle of the video when played in QuickTime. So this problem is related to QuickTime.!!!!!!*
The only solution to stop the code execution is to delete the 'Sprite Track'!!!!.
I also opened the movies in TextEdit and found the following text almost at the end of all the weird symbols:
(I'm sorry but the code disappears when I publish this post).
That's one of the pages that Safari was opening.
I don't know where my friend downloaded those videos, but the potential security risk is imminent.
I had the same results even after updating to QuickTime 7.3
I can upload the videos somewhere (at least the 'clean' ones) so you can make you own tests.
    Any thoughts or comments?????
Is this a known issue in QuickTime?????
P.S. Once again please excuse my English (my main language is Spanish).

If I'm understanding correctly the "Sprite" is a part of how QuickTime works. In older versions you USED to be able to attach JavaScript to a sprite and do all kinds of useful and fun things. However, some websites used JavaScript to alter themselves, so a well crafted QuickTime movie could be used to deploy code that would alter websites. As a result, a LOT of this functionality was curtailed in later versions and many cool QuickTime functions no longer work.
The few that DO still work are when they are basic hyperlinks that take you to another web page, (Like at the end of this movie, BUT you have to click the link to go
    http://www.makentosh.com/tipsfromtheiceberg/Blog/Entries/2006/3/7Somebody_ToldMe....html
) and others no longer work within the browser (they only work when using the QuickTime player). Give this a try. Use Safari to "Open File..." and open the .mov file. After it's open, see if it generates any other windows from there. If it doesn't, then I'd THINK it's operating as intended BUT it wouldn't hurt to send your feedback here for Apple to look into and/or fix it if necessary.

  • .mov files no longer reading Audio in AE CS5

I just upgraded my computer (Vista 64) from Adobe Production Premium CS4 to Adobe Master Collection CS5.
QuickTime has been updated to the latest version, 7.6.6.
In AE, all imported .mov files will show the video just fine, but I can hear no audio.   The speaker icon will show up in the timeline, but if I view the Waveform, I now get two flat lines.   It is as if the Audio was -48.00 dB, but it is set to 0.00. I have even tried to push it up to +12.00 dB, but the Waveform displays only the flat lines.
I have attempted to create a new project and import other .mov files of all sorts, and the same thing occurs - silence during RAM Previews (Audio enabled) and exporting movies (Audio enabled as well).
To prove all is enabled as said, all .aif and .mp3 files are working just fine.  As are .mp4 files with their video.
The issue is really only with .mov files.   Any help is greatly appreciated!

These .mov files are Quicktime Reference Files from AVID Media Composer.   I've been using this
method for years without issues.   I may know what you're going to say - Re-export the
.mov files using a different method.
The .aif files are now acting up as well (from AVID).  As I  scroll the timeline left to right, the Waveforms will litterally  disappear, and my audio will go out of sync.  I can't find any rhyme or  reason to it.
Unfortunately, within the time frame I have, I can't go back and re-do all of these files.  Plus I don't care for the idea that I have to change my routine to suit Adobe's potential flaw in the programing.

  • The movie could not be opened - It is not a movie file

Has anyone else gotten this error???? Three seasons of TV shows downloaded from iTunes now are not recognized and they will not play. If I double click them in iTunes there is absolutely no reaction. If I try to open them through QuickTime - it give me the error above. I have also recently lost all of my Sopranos (6 seasons) and Six Feet Under (5 seasons) - they just disappeared!!! This all happened after I installed Leopard. My itunes library is located on an external hard drive.

Get the free, open source player VLC - it'll play just about every movie file without additional add-ons. Download from here:

  • Front Row showing inexistent movie files

I've had some movie file in the Movies folder that showed up in the Front Row list in Movies, under the line underneath Theatrical Trailers and Movies Folder.
I have deleted the files from the folder and secure emptied the trash but they're still on the list in Front Row.
How is that possible and how can I make them disappear from there ?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
No, Front Row should search in both locations. Music videos, movies and TV shows that appear in those categories in iTunes and are saved in your iTunes library should appear in Front Row under the "Videos" option. Also, any individual movie files (that can be played with the QuickTime Player application) that live inside your <Macintosh HD>/Users/<your user name>/Movies/ should also appear in Front Row, but they won't be categorized as "TV shows" or "Music Videos" like they are in iTunes.
Can you play your videos in your "Movies" folder with the QuickTime Player application by double-clicking on them? If not, then they won't appear to Front Row.

  • Problems with mov files in Wiki pages ?

    Hi ,
we are running 10.5.8 Server and all of a sudden are mov files are no longer playing in our wiki pages .
You can see them preview but when you click on them to play nothing happens and the thumbnail disappears.
Tried repairing the permissions and making sure none of the files have moved but no luck ?
    Cheers
    Geoff

I understand I need another codec but I don't have Final Cut and can't find one that works with iMovie '11. iTunes plays the audio but not video.  Do any of you experts have any suggestions?
    Basically, you have two options:
    1) Purchase FCE to get the codecs, or
    2) Have the data re-exported from the host system using a video codec which is natively compatible with your target system configuration.

  • Final cut movie file dependency?

I'm hoping someone can explain to me how exactly "final cut express movie files" work. I've read that they're just .mov files, and I know that if I change what program they're set to open with they show up as "quicktime movie files" instead; what's confusing me though is that I thought they were independent of the project file, render files, etc but when I transferred several to another computer (having created them by exporting to quicktime in FCE), now only one of them will play (in quicktime - this computer doesnt have FCE). On one computer I've tried, quicktime just hangs, and on another, the file opens but it's only audio. Now one of them won't even play on the computer it was created on. I also have an iDVD project that references one of these movies, and opening that project file I get an error that it's searching for a referenced file - NOT the final cut movie file itselef, but apperenetly something that file is referencing (I'm not on that computer now so can't give the exact message but it's something with "Seq-1" in it as I recall). I may have also gotten that error opening one of the movies in quicktime, I can't remember anymore...
But it really seems these final cut movie files are referencing something - is that how it's supposed to be?? I have some I've made from previous projects that work just fine totally independently (I've deleted everything else from those projects). Any idea what's going on this time?
I'm using both FCE HD and FCE version 1 - the only movie that seems to be working independently was exported from version 1, but the others were from HD. Sorry I don't have more details about the errors, I'll try to post more later when I'm at home.
    Thanks in advance!

Claire W wrote: - so is this file not a regular .mov file then? Or are you saying that's the case with all .mov files?
It is a regular .mov file. It's just that it is dependent on its Project and its Render files
and also, just purely out of curiosity, what would have happened to that render file that's missing on the computer the movie was edited on? I haven't deleted any render files, did it somehow just disappear?? Thanks!
I have found that Render Files seem to get lost. Whether they are deleted in some way or it's just that FCE can't find them, I don't know.
As far as opening the FCE Project is concerned, you can easily re-render to replace any missing Render Files, but I don't like Reference QT Movies (the Dependent ones) - see my recent post at:

  • Movie files suddenly don't import into iMovie

I have been importing dozens of MVI_   .MOV files shot on a Canon 60D and store on my iMac into iMovie no problem. Now after two months when I choose import movie and select the same  files a box comes up saying the file (approx1 GB files)  is processing and it will take less than a minute but the box disappears after 10 secs or so and no file is imported into iMovie. How can I fix this problem that has developed. I've tried with several different files and restarted iMac.

  • Unable to open a .MOV File

Trying to open or export an .MOV File that is supposed to be already saved in Adobe revel,... a message appears ".... preparing video... ", with a cloud symbol.
This message never disappears and the file couldn't be wether opened nor exported anyway.
How can I recover this file ?
    Thanks and kind Regards

I try to open it up, but every time my computer asks me to ‘subscribe’ to
Adobe 'pro', which of course, I am not going to.  Then I have to ‘upload’
the document onto my computer then I have to go into download (green arrow
thing) then, I have to open the thing up via a little icon on the download,
which then opens up another dialogue box, and finally I press ‘ctl p’ to
print off the document!  Such a lot of messing for something which should be
quick and easy!!  So what do I do?
I am just grateful that nowadays I don’t get very many pdf documents!!
    would be sat here forever!

  • Audio missing from old .mov files

Recently I noticed that ALL of the audio from an entire folder of .mov files has disappeared. Video playback is fine. I tried to export from Quicktime to experiemtn but it suggests that the file is corrupt and can't be exported...but all of them? Files are being kept on external drive. Could Lion be causing this somehow? Any ideas how to retrieve the missing audio?

Copy (drag and drop) one of the files to your Desktop and test again.

  • Keeping movies files/memory small

In order to keep a movie file and memory usage as small as
possible, is it possible to close external casts and open others at
certain points in the movie? I suppose that while an external cast
is open it is eating up memory. For example, I have Voice Overs for
each chapter. Each Voice Over file is 40 Megabytes, (and that is
very compressed). When one chapter is complete, can I close the
external VO cast for that chapter and open another in the same
movie? It has to be the same movie. The way I have everything set
up, my main movie is very long and contains several elements. And
that is my next question, just how long is too long? Is it possible
to have 25,000 frames in a movie with 50 channels?

Well I have all this MIAW action. From the main movie you may
open one of several different MIAWs and the main movie will stay
where it is (it asks questions (200) for you to answer and keeps a
running score). I had it set up as separate MIAWs within one small
movie, but because of the interface "the Man" wanted I can't seem
to figure out how that can possible be done. I have a dropdown menu
in the middle of the screen and if it opens over a MIAW then that
MIAW disappears behind the main movie - can't have that. So all the
questions, which are below the menu have to be in the same movie as
the menu so that the menus can open on top of the questions. So it
looks like I'm going to have one LONG movie. I could tell it to
open another movie when it gets to a certain point - a movie that
looks exactly like the preceeding one except the questions are
different. I don't know how that would look there might be a screen
flicker while the new movie opens.

  • QuickTime Player (10.1) no longer plays (.mov) files it used to after Lion install

    Greetings,
It seems that ever since I upgraded to Lion, many video clips I have no longer load.  .WMV files load, but any/all .MOV files get a codec error code.  All the video files I have worked seemlessly before no matter what suffix was attached to a video file.  I'd also had QuickTime Pro in my system, but for some odd reason it disappeared once I moved up to Lion -- I have the keycodes, but it appears as though Apple only allows reprocurement.  Has QT 10.1 taken over QT Pro?  I'm totally stumped as to why (of all things) my .WMV files play, and any .MOV will generate the codec error message.  What else stumps me, is that you can play any file if you hit the play button within the file list, but you can't launch it within QT!  I have an old copy of Flip4Mac, so maybe that's why my .wmv files will play.  BTW, I downloaded a fresh copy of QuickTime, but that didn't help at all.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
