Disappearing network

Hello,
I have a new Mac laptop and a new linksys wireless router. I set up a network name and have been using it for about a month with no problems... But now,  my network name has disappeared and I think it has just renamed it's self as the generic linksys network. How did this happen? And how can I get my own named network back?
Thanks you!
Susan

Your network did not dissapear. The router may have been reset or there may have been a power surge/outtage that caused the router to restore its default settings.

  • Printer has disappeared, Network function gone and Bluetooth does not work

About 3 or four days ago Software update informed me there was no software to updated. After installing my iMac G5 quit photoshop and QuarkXpress nonstop. In the past when I had problem like this I would just erase the hard drive and re-install all software.
I have re-installed all software 3 times including the printer software yet my iMac G5 does not recongize my HP Color Ink Printer cp 1700. In the past I would see bonjour and it would have my HP Color Ink Printer cp 1700 listed.
About a year ago I purchased an AirPort Extreme to allow my three macs to share one printer. In the past I would click on the network icon and a window would pop up asking to connect. BUT after the update clicking on the icon does nothing. In the past I did not have to do anytype of setup. I discovered the network function by mistake. BUT I got used to have access to documents on my other machines. And sharing documents. So I would like to network function return.

  • Printers disappeared; network crawling

I'm having two problems on one machine, while several other Macs on the same network are not experiencing either issue.
First, my MacBook Pro can't find either of the two Bonjour printers on the network.  In fact, I printed a PDF to one of these printers, and the moment that that document finished printing, I tried to print a second PDF; suddenly the computer was saying the printer was offline. I rebooted the MBP and restarted the printer hardware. I tried to delete and re-add the printer to my Printer pref-pane, but the computer could find no printer on the network.  Meanwhile, I was able to print from an iMac with no problem whatsoever.
Second, the network connection on my MBP has slowed to a crawl.  It took this Apple Support page about 20 seconds to download.  Again, the iMac has no such problems; websites are snappy.
I am totally blumfustered.  Absolutely no clue as to what could be the issue.  It's not like I made any changes to the computer in the few seconds between printing the first document and trying to print the next one.  Frankly, I wasn't sure whether to put this question under hardware or software, under printing or networking, because I don't have a clue as to what is failing or where.   Anybody have any ideas?

Restart your router and see whether there's an improvement.

  • Can't scan or connect to WPA network since kernel upgrade

    Hi guys,
I upgraded to kernel 2.6.29 earlier today and have been having trouble with scanning and connecting to WPA encrypted networks since. I'm stuck with a wired connection for the minute, but I can't have the wire going through the house for so long otherwise somebody will trip over it - probably me.
I usually use netcfg to connect to the network, but since the update that has failed.
My network called is a Belkin USB Wireless G, model number F5D705ed version 5000ed. It worked perfectly fine on 2.6.28 using the rtl8187 native drivers.
    dmesg output for 2.6.29
usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8187

I can start the card up using
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
When I attempt to scan for a wireless network, I get
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    wlan0 No scan results
The network is WPA, and would scan fine on 2.6.28.
    wpa_supplicant.conf looks like this

    ssid="Arazmataz"

I should note though, that since the update - /var/run/wpa_supplicant seems to have disappeared.

    IWCONFIG="rate 54M"

dhcpcd times out also and netcfg fails to connect. Going back to WEP seems to work ok.

I've made some progress though - but still can't connect. I can now scan for a network though.
    /etc/conf.d/wireless-regdom
    WIRELESS_REGDOM="GB"
/var/run/wpa_supplicant still didn't exist, so I created a /var/run/wpa_supplicant folder - and saw a few success messages in the log. This allowed me to bring the card up again and scan for a network.
At this point, I was getting excited until netcfg2 still kept telling me that it couldn't associate with the network.
    I installed wicd and gave that a go and got the following. I did a 'tail -f /var/log/wicd/wicd.log' and got this;

  • Z68A-GD80 (G3) Networking/LAN Issue

Have been having this problem since I purchased the board. Essentially, I installed all the hardware and went to install the operating system. Worked fine for the first time. After about the fourth start up, the operating system did not even recognize the LAN/Gigabit networking controllers. This is not a huge problem as I had an extra networking card, but its annoying if you want to use SLI/Crossfire due to the network card blocking a video card fan exhaust. Tried to reinstall the operating system, but this did not fix the issue and the OS did not recognize the LAN ports from the very beginning of the install.
One solution I have found is to completely turn off all power and remove the RAM to have a full mobo reset. Unfortunately, this will clear all my overclocking preferences and the disappearing LAN ports will still happen from time to time.
My question is have other people had this problem of the disappearing network controllers with the Z68A-GD80? Is there an easier solution then RMA'ing the board entirely?
Thank you in advance for your help !!

Does 'Network Adapter' show up in Device Manger? So far, this has not been experienced on the GD80(G3) here, but a GD80(B3) never even had the LAN port LED's lite up. Just a guess, but believe it to be a possible Z68 chipset problem. If planning on keeping the system for a long time, it may be best to RMA it now for a fully functional mainboard.

  • ICloud status icon in iTunes

What does this iCloud staus icon mean? It used to appear intermittently in iTunes 10. It rarely, if ever, went away without restarting iTunes. I was hopeful that this issue would be "fixed" by iTunes 11. But, as you can see, it's still there, and it still clears with an iTunes restart. I found an Apple Support article for iCloud status icons <http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4124> but this one is not listed. Your thoughts?

Yes, please someone answer this question.
When playing purchased music or video streamed from iCloud (I do not have iTunes Match), sometimes the song just stops, I look over at iTunes window and the iCloud symbol is gone, and all my songs/videos in the cloud disappear from the list. It is as if the iCloud icon shows that I have good connection to my library on iCloud.
However, once it disappears (network hiccup?), I can't figure out how to get the iCloud-based songs back. If I quit iTunes and restart it, I *do* get that iCloud icon back as well as access to all my songs in iCloud.
Quiting and restarting seems a bad design.
Could Apple (or someone) provide a definitive story on the iCloud icon (what it means, what are its different states, etc.), and when it disappears, how can I bring it back (and my song lists)?

  • KeyChain Hack

    Hi Guys,
Last week I recieved a received a spam message (that I thought was legit, from a friend). Not long after I begain to notice some very odd
behaviour from my iPhone 3Gs (I was on 4.3.3). My passwords all disappeared, networks were forgotten, my title bar would change, and it would take
about 12-15 minutes to boot up (!!!). Anyways, this weekend I finally got around to upgrading to iOS 5.0.1, and think I have got rid of the KeyChain malware,
but I had notice after the restore my iTunes password was not working. When I reset it, I logged in and found all of my credits (about $25 worth) were gone!
(very glad I didn't have a CC on file!!)
Anyways, how can I contact Apple to get them to investigate all activity on my account after a certain date?
Obviously I'd like to get the credit back, but given how simply my phone was hijacked, I'm extremely reluctant to purchase more..
    Cheers,
    G-9629410

Your phone was not hijacked unless it was jailbroken, your computer was. There is no known malware for unhacked iPhones. Email iTunes Store support about the credit, and change ALL of your passwords after running a full virus scan on your computer.
If it WAS jailbroken then it might have been infected, but you took the risk jailbreaking it. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743

Can no longer connect to my network and "forget network" option has disappeared???  (Ipod touch 5th generation). This happened on both my children's ipods. We have reset network settings but it doesn't help.

  • 8500 909a is on my network for days then it disappears and reinstall is the only way back

I am hoping someone can help me.  I am a computer reseller as well as the tech support provider to my customers.  I have tried everything that my 20 years experience has taught me and I cannot figure this out.
OS - Windows 7 Professional - with Administrative rights both locally and network wide.
4GB Ram and ample hard drive space.
Latest 8500 drivers from the web (Full package) downloaded and installed.
Networked using Netgear VPN Prosafe with a Server (2008 Std Edition) and 3 workstations as well as the HP 8500 (909a).  I AIO wired to my router, and I have a static IP assigned in the printer.  I have also reserved the static IP in my DHCP server so that the number isn't accidently handed out.   The printer will stay on the network for days sometimes weeks.  For no apparent reason, it just disappears.  The scanning doesn't find my computer and my computer doesn't see a printer any longer.  It sees the other HP Laser I have on the network (never losing that one - ever).
I am very tired of uninstalling and reinstalling to get this printer back.
Hoping someone has an answer for me.

I assume this is WIn7 64-bit?  If so, there are Firmware and Updates here that you should try.

  • When i restart, the top bar with the date and time, networks, battery life etc.. all disappears and theres only the finder icon which gets stuck for some reason and wouldnt work either!

When restarting my macbook pro, all the options on the top right corner of the screen disappear ( battery life, Wifi, languages etc..) when i try to show them in system preferences once i click on network preferences the whole system preferences goes Not responding and i have to force quit it. the only way i found to bring them back is restarting my computer a number of times till they just come back alone. not sure what the problem is??? now i never shut down my computer cause i am worried i'll lose them again and for months i just put to sleep when i am done since nothing happens to them when its on sleep once i shut it down and turn it on again the same thing happens.
    appreciate any answers...

You sure you're in the /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ folder? If yes, then that's your issue. That plist controls the right-hand menu bar.
log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists. Then, check its Preference folder for that plist file.

  • Mac G5 Disappears on my home network

I have a annoying problem that I am struggling to solve
I have an old PowerMac G5 (1.6ghz PowerPC) running leopard, which has a huge hard disk so it is used as a dumping ground for everything digital. I wanted to be able to get this onto my home network so I could use it as a master iTunes collection, as well as being able to access files from my MacBook Pro (2.26 Ghz Intel)
My home network also has a Windows 7 PC which has a printer attached which I would like to be able to print over the network, but thats a different problem
My problem is this, the G5 didn't have a wireless card and can not be connected via Ethernet due to the distance it is from the router. So to get online I bought a dongle online....
    This>>http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130334850512&ssPageName=STR K:MEWNX:IT#ht4206wt907
Plugged it in, followed the instructions which involved disabling all my network options (Firewire, Ethernet and Internal Modem) and using this USB Ethernet solely
This works a treat, and finally I have my old power horse online! Great, but the two macs (as well as the Windows PC) struggle to see each other - sometimes I can see the G5 on my Shared list, and have even managed to transfer files from one to the other. However to get this to work, I had to first open iTunes and enable home sharing. This at first worked perfectly, but now it just stops after about 5 mins, if it works at all. My MacBookPro is now showing up on the G5 in shared, but with the blue screen of death showing! So it thinks my MBP is a PC, wont see the PC at all and cant be found from my MBP at all
I dont know what to do to solve this problem, its annoying because it HAS worked, but then just stopped and now is temperamental at best, impossible most of the time. iTunes home share has to be restarted all the time, it wont see my iPhone as a remote at all (works perfectly on the Windows 7 PC... grrrr)
I dont know where to start to fix it really, all my sharing options are set to open and sharing on both Macs and I have restarted the router, Macs etc etc a million times hoping it would just 'work' like I expected it too!
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Bankos, and a warm welcome to the forums!
all my sharing options are set to open and sharing on both Macs..
In System Preferences>Security>Firewall tab, what are the settings there?

  • Yoga 13 Network Adaptor has disappeared...???

    Hi all,
I've had my Yoga 13 for about two months (and have loved it), until this morning, when the network adapter disappeared. I was working upstairs, shut the laptop, brought it downstairs, opened it and was greeted with no wireless networks. Troubleshooting informed me that this was because Windows cannot detect a properly installed network adapter. This is on Windows 8.1.
    I have tried:
    1) Checking airplane mode etc
    2) Looking in Device Manager to see whether the network adapter is still there (it isn't)
    3) System Restore (no effect)
    4) Installing the latest driver off the lenovo website (no effect)
Completely stumped by this other than guessing the network card is broken - which I'm not too happy about after only two months. Other laptop in the house is working absolutely fine on the network.
Thanks for any ideas you might have!

I'm experiencing this exact problem on 2 different Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 notebooks. I've been in contact with Lenovo support, but all they can come up with is resetting the notebooks using the OKR-button. I've read in several forums that that didn't fix the problem, so I'm not planning to reset the machine; it will cost me a lot of time installing all software again.
Anyone experiencing this problem and tried de-installing other software / drives that might confict with or influence the standard adaptor drivers Lenovo has installed?
We, for example, are using a kensington sd3000v docking station for connection a display and networkcable. Perhaps its driver may have anything to do with this problem.

  • My printers works fine on my home network but disappears on a remote desktop terminal connection

As I don't really know how to post a general addition to the knowledge base, I'm doing in Jeopardy style.  Here is the question to the above answer.  Well close enough.
Many people have reported all over the net issues with printers working just fine on their home network  but disappearing when they connect to a server via RDT.  There are some legit updates needed where windows did not see anything but LPT and COM ports for printer re-direction assignment.  There are Mr. Fix it's for those and registry patches.  When all of that fails, the information highway seems to dead end.
Here is what I learned today via 2 specific printers:  HP1022 and HP2840 lasjerjets.
After many months of frustration and 7 1/2 hours with Microsoft advanced prof support I've finally pinned down this printer and a slew of others.  This problem as far as I have come across deals exclusively with HP printers.  In simple terms:  the drivers are flawed.  This 1022 is a prime example.  It prints locally and via TCP/IP just fine. I have about 7 other printers and dummy printers in my printer folder.  Enter a remote desktop session and ALL of them populate except the 1022.  This shows that the hooks and RDT finders are locating your printers and installing them properly as remote printers.  All except the 1022.
Log out of your RDT session: goto the local 1022 setup and change the printer driver to a PCL driver.  I used a 1200 PCL driver.  Now log back into your RDT server and hockus pocus! there is your printer.  Totally un-usable because the driver will not run this printer.  Caveat:  each time I did this XP crashed (I couldn't get to the properties TAB anymore -- I had to un-install the 1022 and then re-install it with at least 1 reboot in the process)
Moving on we go to the HP OfficeJet/LajerJet2840.  Same thing.  It won't pass through as remote printer in RDT.  Go local.  Set the printer driver to AppleLaserWriter8500 and boom. (same logout, change, back in steps) and your LJ2840 shows up and works.
While I will have to wait until tomorrow I am betting that this will fix the exact same problem with the HP Officejet 8500A all in one with the exact same problem.
Hey HP?  Whats with the drivers??
Another work around if you have a static enough environment is to install your local printer that will not show up under RDT on the server, and then point the port to your fixed IP on your router, and passthru port 9100 to your locally installed printer that is failing.  You can now be on RDT and chooses the network printer that is printing to the TCP address of your home (or office) router.

  • G4 laptop shows up / disappears randomly on both home and office network

I have a G4 laptop that I take between my office and home and for years have had no problem transferring files between it and multiple Macs at both locations. Something has happened in the last few days in which the G4 will show up sometimes on the bonjour network, and then it will not. I'll restart it . . . sometimes it will show up again, sometimes it will not. I've cleared the PRAM, run Cocktail, Applejack . . . same problem. Any ideas what has suddenly affected bonjour on the G4?

If you intend using your portable Mac in a variety of different environments then I recommend you create a series of Locations and then switch between them as required. Keep Automatic for your most used network such as your home or office and then create additional ones for say, wireless networks on the road, an internet connection via your mobile phone and so on.
I am getting confused though, you say
'Actually, even if I boot to the login screen, I will see the G4 appear and can start transferring files, but after 10 -15 minutes, it disappears.'
From what you said earlier in this thread I thought you meant that the G4 laptop would either be visible or not to the other Macs when you join one of your networks not that it is visible for a while then drops off the network. Which is it please?
If it is the latter then check in System Preferences/Energy Saver to see if 'Put the hard disk(s) to sleep ...' is ticked and if it is untick it. You might also want to extend the time for 'Put the computer to sleep ....' to see if that makes a difference.
