Disappearing "open" dialogue

My Photohop CS3, running under Win XP, has developed an annoying bug lately. When I click File > Open, the "open" dialogue flashes for an instant and then disappears. Photoshop, waiting for my input, freezes and has to be killed in Task Manager. This happens regardless of whether I have any programs running in other windows. It appears to be exclusively a Photoshop problem -- others (including Adobe Acrobat) are not affected. I have not added any new software recently, but of course some applications that can run in background do get upgraded without notice.
I'm running 10.0.1, which is the latest update.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for the replies, but I'm afraid they don't help much. I did delete the preferences file, but without any result. I haven't changed my display settings since shortly after getting the monitor, more than a year ago. My graphics card settings don't appear to contain anything that could affect dialogue placement.
However, "ESC" does dismiss the dialogue.

  • Open Dialogue in Preview has no 'recent folders'

The 'regular' open dialogue shows recently opened folders.  That is very useful, and seems to have disappeared in the Preview Open Dialogue.  Any way to bring that back?

    Me too.
'Open Recent ...', is NOT to what I am referring.  I'm sorry I wasn't more clear.
In the standard open dialogue of every application on the Mac (except Preview) when you pull down the current folder, you will get a list showing a hierarchy of folders showing where the current folder resides (you can then move up the hierarchy).  Below that is a heading called 'Recent Places' ... I should have noted this specifically before.  This shows the most recent 6 folders you have opened.  Typically when you are working, that will be one of the folders where you want to find a file.  It is MUCH faster than locating the folder you want from scratch.
I'm just concerned that it is the start of eliminating this in all applications.  Why take something well-designed, which is very useful and eliminate it?  I've heard that Preview is showing the influence of iOS.  The next system release is supposed to move even more in that direction.  I can't say I'm looking forward to it though.

  • Reverse order in File- Open dialogue

The file/folder list in the File->Open dialogue window is "stuck" at showing in reverse order. I can right-click in the Open dialogue window and sort ascending, but the next time I open a file it is back to reverse order.
I have experimented with Explorer's view settings but Reader appears to ignore those. Other applications, for example Word, use Explorer's view settings and behave as I would expect.
I suspect that someone has inadvertently changed something on this PC. Perhaps there's a keystroke combination that changes the file display order persistently?
    Any ideas, please?
    Adobe Reader version 8.1.2

I'm still struggling with this - does anyone know how to change the file sort order in the File->Open dialogue?
It must be possible to change it because it has somehow been changed to reverse order!

  • Search not working in open dialogue box.

Why is it that after nearly TWO years the search function in the open dialogue box is still not working in inDesign? Why can it work when in the PASTE dialogue box but not the OPEN dialogue box? I discovered this fault years ago and wrote about it in length but it has yet to be addressed. Is there anybody else that is bothered by this?

    Doc Maik.
I'm on a MAC. The dialogue box that appears when you OPEN a file. The search command in the top right corner (spotlight) does not work. Has not worked since the upgrade to CS6. See attached.

  • Pictures not appearing in Open dialogue

When I try to attach a picture to an email or document, Aperture appears in the Media-Photo section of the Open dialogue, but no pictures show up. It looks as though there are no pictures in the Aperture library (there are thousands). I am running Aperture 3, sharing is set to Always in the Aperture settings and all the masters are in the Aperture library. Can someone help? Thanks!

Thanks - I was generating previews, so not sure why they would not show up - perhaps because I have just upgraded to this current machine from an older MacBook Pro. However, I created a new Library, imported photos from outside and inside the original library and now everything appears. I still wonder what was going on, but at least everything now seems to be working properly.
    Thanks again.

  • File open dialogue

    Hello,
I was trying to use the File_open_dialogue in the CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES and used the parameters as follows:
    CALL METHOD CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_OPEN_DIALOG
         EXPORTING
           WINDOW_TITLE            = 'Select Files'
           DEFAULT_EXTENSION       =  '*.txt'
         DEFAULT_FILENAME        =
         FILE_FILTER             =
         WITH_ENCODING           =
         INITIAL_DIRECTORY       =
However, each time I open up the file open dialogue, it always set the default extension to *.rtf, which is not what I want, although *.txt is one of the options listed. How can I change the code to ensure that .txt file is the default while other options will still be available? Thanks a lot!
    Regards,
    Anyi

    Hi anyi,
    1. SIMPLE

  • File Open Dialogue has forward slash and starts up on A: drive.

    2.1.1.64
This is minor but bothers me each time I click file open.
    Click File -> Open
    File open dialogue appears.
SQL Developer tells me my A: drive is not accessabile after my A: hard drive makes a grinding noise. I almost forgot that little bit of info since I have not used the A: drive since around the year 2000. :)
SQL Developer puts a "/" forward slash in the file name box. Why?
    I have to press OK.
Then navigate to the C: drive or another drive.
Why does SQL developer want to open the A: drive and not go to a more likely drive like say C:? Then there would be no message and no having to click OK? My recommendation is that SQL Developer File Open dialogue start up on the C: drive or at least just show the directory structure and not make me click anything. Remove the forward slash from the filename field also.

At first this seemed to work. SQLDev would startup and open a file for me from the r:\ drive in its own tab that I was previously editing in a prior session. File->open would startup on the R:\ drive. However, with no file in its own tab on startup no matter what AddVMOption I put in the sqldeveloper.conf file from the link provided SQLDev starts up on the a:\ drive? Changing the "start in" dir on the icon on my desktop had no affect either.

  • Fixed right-click issue in Save/Open Dialogue Photoshop crash

Not sure where to post this, so I also started this new Topic...
I have to share this somewhere...
I've been dealing this problem for months and I finally fixed it on my own.
My Antivirus, AVG, which is great, except for this glitch, was the root cause of the issue.
History:  If I right-clicked a file in my Save/Open Dialogue Photoshop (CS6 Extended) would crash.. for the last few months, actually...  If I avoided right-clicking I'm ok, but my instincts are to organize, rename, etc. while in the save/open pop-up window ... So I've often crashed Photoshop when all I do is right-click on a file in the list of files...
Well, I figured out the cause of the glitch:
"Permanently Shred with AVG” .. this option, added without my knowledge during an AVG update, was added around the same time this problem started (realizing this in hindsight).. THIS was conflicting with my Adobe Photoshop file explorer window in the Save/Open dialogue!!! After months of trying to figure this out, this is definitely the solution.
Once I turned that AVG Shell Extenstion off.... I am now able to right-click files in Photoshop save/open pop-up window again without it crashing…  finally !!!!
...hope this helps folks even if it's just a related clue to other issues....
Basically ,run command prompt as Administrator, then type:
    For 32-bit :  regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG2014\avgse.dll”
    For 64-bit:   regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG2014\avgse.dll”
I found this info about turning off  "Permanently Shred with AVG" option at this link: http://techdows.com/2013/09/avg-2014-how-to-remove-permanently-shred-with-avg-option-from- context-menu.html
    thanks!

  • Nav Services Open Dialogue Bug

TextWrangler 2.1.3 and OSX 10.4.7 result in sporadic TW crashes when opening files within TW.
I sent BareBones the crash log, and they said it is a known bug in OSX Nav Services, and occurs with any app using the Open dialogue.
I'm experiencing about 4 crashes a day using TW, whereas before the last update it was only about 4 a year.
To confirm it wasn't my system, I did a complete reinstall from scratch using the Apple DVDs, and remaking all my preferences and pw by hand.
    The bug is still there.
Question: When will Apple fix this so that excellent apps like BBEdit and TW can run smoothly without this annoying bug.
Will it be fixed for Tiger users on the next update?
    Please Apple, it's very irritating.

    By way of a bump, here's what BareBones said about this OSX bug;
"Nav Services is part of Mac OS X, and this is a known bug in that part of the system. [It] may occur randomly any time you use the Open dialog. It's certainly possible that this bug could be fixed, but since it's in the system, that isn't something we can do; it will have to be addressed by Apple."

  • No search results from "Open" dialogue box

In Mavericks OS 10.9.4, I get no search results when searching from an open dialogue box, i.e. open file from within Photoshop or some other program.  Searching from within Finder works fine.  Anyone else seeing this?  Any solutions?
    Mac Pro 2014
    Mavericks OS 10.9.4

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe modeand log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Photoshop CC "Open" dialogue Window preview image query.

    Hello and Good Evening.
I am using Photoshop CC on an iMac, with Mountain Lion. I have no issues with the software and it runs perfectly, so this is just a query really.
If I save an image which has Alpha Channels contained within it, following processing, when I then reopen the image, the preview of the image in the "Open" dialogue window appears as a sort of negative, almost as if it has one of the masks on it. The image opens fine though, and looks as I left it.
If I save the image without Alpha Channels, by unselecting them in the Save As dialogue window, and saving the image as a copy, when I reopen this one, the preview of the image is fine.
I'm hoping someone may have some ideas.
    I have attached a couple of images below to illustrate;
    With Alpha Channels:
    Without Alpha Channels:

    Hi Chris
    Thank you for the reply.
There are definitely Alpha Channels in the image as I created them during the retouching.
I think you're right, as I decided to investigate further and open Bridge, (which I never normally use), and the previews in that show up correctly.
So overall not too fussed about it as long as the actual image file is fine, which it is.
    Thank you again.
    Much appreciated.
    Mike

  • Open dialogue box in Lion is not supporting drag and drop files (UPDATE)

This is freaking me out. Because now in Lion you can't drag and drop file from the desktop (and other folders!) to open dialogue box. It was most usefull function in Mac OS X. Why Apple kill usabillity?
Access to the desktop is not a problem (command + d), but if the current file is located deep in the hierarchy of folders, it becomes a big problem!!!
Dear Apple, please fix it as soon as you can.
UPDATE: Omg, I found the problem, it works only if I drad and drop file on the bottom panel, not in all open dialogue box area:

Interesting, this is the second time today I've seen this one come up. It does work, drag and drop works like crazy everywhere here. What does console say when it happens (or not, in your case)?

  • Is there a way to select multiple items in the open dialogue (ctrl+O)?

Sometimes I would like to open multiple items at once using ctrl+O, but in the dialogue, I can only select one item at a time.
This also applies to Firefox 4.

No, sorry. I suppose you could try running the files via Windows Explorer.

  • CS4 Open Dialogue – no adobe or OS X option and no Version Cue option

Title says it all really. In CS3 I had an option for OS X or adobe interface in open and save dialogues. Installed Ps 11.0 to home drive then CS4 to local drive/partition that is local but is not the boot drive. In neither case do I get the options that I'm guessing should be there still. Having a set of favorite places unique to Adobe apps is advantageous to me, this is main reason for wanting this feature.
I have to say on a PPC G5 with CS3 installed this never worked as it should for favourites anyhow ie Folders dragged to favourites in Bridge should get listed in open/save dialogues in Adobe applications but never got listed (worked fine on PC install I had).
Is this because I installed to a non-boot drive (many applications wont allow this but CS4 thankfully does as it's a whopper payload)?

If it is hidden, follow the steps in this KBase
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
If you have it in the Applications folder, trash it before attempting a new download.
