Disappearing personal settings in Safari

for like the 3rd time since i installed leopard, my personal safari settings, like user id/password for all websites it used to remember are suddenly gone! i did not even look at, nor do anything with the keychain app, nor purposely clear the cache!!! this is getting very annoying. anybody has some ideas why this is happening?

Go to your Applications>Utilities folder. Open "Disk Utility". There, select your HD on the left, then on the right, select "repair permissions".
If you notice no change over the next day or so, then I suggest you reapply the 10.4.11 Combo Update. "Repair permissions" as above when complete.
You'll find the Combo Update either here (Intel), or here (PPC).

Restoring/Recovering Personal Settings...

Ok, after one failed attempt to move my Home folder to another partition, I finally found instructions to properly move it (using NetInfo Manager). So, after I did that and logged in and saw that it worked, I deleted (perhaps too soon) my old Home folder on my startup disk. Only later did I realize that while my files and such were moved properly, ALL my personal settings disappeared (Safari, Adium, Keychain, iTunes, etc.) While some of them, such as Safari could easily be changed back to the way I had them, some of them, like iTunes, I can't get back to the way they were.
For example, my iTunes Library is gone, I can import all my songs back into iTunes, but they don't have my ratings, playcount, etc.
So, is there anyway I can get my settings back, or are they gone forever?
Or at least is there a way to get my iTunes Library back? (I tried importing the iTunes Music Library.xml file but it couldn't find the music, I even oped it in TextEdit and changed the location to where my music is now, but it still didn't work)

Once again, with enough research on Google, I was able to find an answer. I needed to make a symbolic link where my home folder used to be to where it is now. And now everything works!

Logging in sometimes doesn't load personal settings

Running Lion 10.7.4 on a new iMac 27" connected to an Active Directory domain (but logging in as a local user). Sometimes when I log in my personal settings don't load at all--as if i was a brand new user. When this happens, I can't log out and back in as it freezes halfway through logging out (see screenshot) and i have to do a hard reset.
I'm stumped. Any ideas/advice appreciated.

To expand a bit on what I've tried: (Activity window and error windows open)
running Safari in 32-bit - file is downloaded, but doesn't play. Once got a message that QT had no codec for .mp3 with redirect to 3rd party codec installers.
running Safari in 64-bit - file doesn't load. Activity reports file cancelled.
I can download & play the file using Firefox, QT X player, Camino, IE/Windows, and Safari under any OS earlier than Snow Leopard. I have checked on multiple Macs, mine and other people's. All behave the same. Some mp3 files always play, some play sometimes, some never play under Safari/10.6.
I have deleted the Canon.mp3 file and re-uploaded it to iDisk from my G4 Cube (OS 10.4.11) but it still doesn't play with Safari/10.6. Come to think of it, the problem files were encoded with iTunes under OS 10.6. I'll try encoding to mp3 under Tiger and see what happens.

How to reinstall firefox 7 after complete deletion and recover all personal settings

I tried windows restore, but there are no records of a restore point.
I was using CC Cleaner program which told me that a previous version Firefox 6 was still on the drive. I allowed it to delete that, and then found that my Firefox 7 icon & program had disappeared completely.
I could just download & reinstall FF7, but then all my saved settings would probably be wiped out -- is that correct ??

Give it a try. Firefox saves all of your personal settings in a different folder than the program itself. So it's possible that you still have your personal settings ([[Profiles|profile folder]]). You can install the latest Firefox and if it finds your profile you'll be back in business.

I was playing with my ipad settings (it's an older model) and noted in the advanced settings of Safari there was a place to view website databases. When I clicked on this I saw websites. How do these get there and what does the space amount mean?

Can anyone tell me how these get there? Can a website be posted even if it was never went to? What does the space amount mean? For example, 1.5 kb...is this quite a bit? Would it indicate someone has gone to a site multiple times?
I share my ipad with my teenage daughter and I'm trying to find out if she's lying to me. Obviously she's swearing that she has "no idea" how these got there and I'm trying to keep her safe (she's only 14).

Think of your PC and the 'temporary internet folder' where it keeps cached copies of web pages or elements off a web page for 'quicker display the next time you visit'. That's pretty much what that folder is. 1.5K is tiny. Probably just a basic page with some text on it. (you might be confusing 1.5K with 1.5 megabyte....megabyte is large...it's roughly 1000 kilobytes, so the 1.5K is a tiny file)
As far as I know, the only way info gets into that folder is if the browser has been to that site.
if you have a concern there are browsers out there, McGruff is one i've seen recommended, that allow some degree of parental control and supervision. That or you could passcode lock the iPad or enable the restrictions to turn off some parts of the device to have some control.

How do I find the dir with personal settings ?

I can find the user's home directory and the FM install directory but not (yet) the dir where personal settings are stored. On my system this is C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\10 but I this depends on the login name, Frame version and possibly Windows version as well.
Is there an easy method or property to get to this directory ?

What a coincidence, I had to deal with this just recently.
With FrameScript it would be Session.UserSettingsDir
But the ExtendScript interface does not allow easy access to as many properties as there are, so you have to question the list of all session properties and then find the one you want. I created a function to handle this, bhut currently used it only with this call:
getAppProperty(Constants.FP_UserSettingsDir);
I would gladly accept any hints to improve this function.

In Me21n -- create purchase order screen i have a tab called as Personal settings where i can go and assign some default fields like Plant , StrLoc ............. .
Now i want to deactivate it for some particular users .
How to to it ? At configuration level should i do it .Or can the Basis person go and remove the object or field from that particular list.If yes what is that object or field which the Basis person should deactviate ??

For the particular user click on the user settings and remove the default values and save.
It will not display.

We want to use Personal settings to default certain fields but want fields from the vendor master to take prioirty.... can we change the field selection available to users or can we switch off personal settings, or change the priority so if payment terms maintains at vendor level, these take prioity over personal setting ones!

You can try it in your system, i told you as per standard SAP, so we talk about SAP design, and for me, it make sense if the personal setting is overriding the vendor master setting, because the vendor master (purchasing data) also just for default data,and SAP give personal setting in order to make default data under user level, so the personal setting is only effected for the user, not all user that using the transaction

How can I change the settings in Safari to list the open windows chronologically instead of alphabetically? I keep a lot of open windows e.g., 25 windows and many tabs on each) and like to work between a few at a time. The problem is that Safari reorganizes windows alphabetically. Once I open a new window, it take a while to find the windows I'm looking for. Chrome and Firefox list the open windows chronologically which I find much easier. The newest windows are at the bottom of the list.

Personal settings of Batch user

Hi All,
Scenario: Payment term in vendor master(Purchasing &accounting view) is P124 while POs which are getting created for this vendor via batch jobs are having a payment term P125. Requirement is that Paymnt term in PO should come from Vendor master.
I guess P125 is getting defaulted from ME21N --> Personal settings.
How do we change the Personal settings of a batch User. Do I need to check the variant of that batch job?

Lost al .pages and .numbers docs , iphoto and office programs won't open after changing: auto startup in: startup with password. all personal settings are also gone

After i changed this setting: autologin. into login with password i restarted the computer.
it started up with a blank personal surrounding. also my .pages and .numbers documents were gone, personal settings gone, iphoto won't open and office programs wo'nt open.
in finder i can find several .doc documents and i can see that all my pictures are still on the system, But i can't open them.
i was so stupid not to use time machine. But is there way to recover the system with my documents or something??
please help.

Nope, without any backup they're probably gone for good. If you want you can purchase some data recovery software such as Data Rescue. I hope this may be a lesson why it's critical to backup your system, Time Machine is a good place to start.

The built-in guest user account will not do this. Simply create a new standard account and call it "Guest" or "Guest Users" or whatever you like.
Go to System Preferences > Users& Groups, click "+" to make a new account.

Settings in Safari on Laptop

Just got a MacBook Pro. For some reason my settings in Safari didn't follow over. How do I get them on the laptop?

You can use the Migration Assistant (Applications/Utilities) You will need a Firewire cable.
You can import Safari Bookmarks from the old Mac to the new without using the Migration Assistant.
On the old Mac launch Safari. From the Safari Menu Bar click File/Export Bookmarks.
You can e-mail the Safari.Bookmarks.html file to your new MBPro or you can send that file via Bluetooth.
One you have that file on the MBPro, launch Safari. Go to the menu bar click File/Import Bookmarks.
