Disappearing ROM's

I have a little problem with disappearing CD-ROM's. When I put a CD in any of my drives they all disappear from "My Computer". I have to restart the computer sometimes 5 or more times before they show up. When the drives do not show the door will not open either and the light flashes. When I take the cd out on restart the drives show up but when I put the cd (any cd, any drive) the drives will go out again. It does not do this all the time but about 90% which can be annoying. I thought that the problem was with Windows XP but since I am triple booting (98SE, 2000Pro, XP), I decided reboot to switch OS. The drives will not show in any OS I use except after a few restarts. Now I am comfused and can not find anything on this. What I do know is I had this same board and getting the same things happening and after a few months I had it RMAed but because of constant memory errors with every game I played. The backup board I used was the same but Asus (A7N8X), the Asus never messed with the drives once while I was waiting for the RMA. When I got my MSI board back, I put it in and getting the ROMs disappearing again. I know this is a totally different board because the first was a 333MHz bus and the new was the Delta-L 400MHz (Delta-L was not out yet when I bought the first). I do not want to break up my MSI system and I can not believe they are not compatible together. Even the memory is recommended by MSI so everything should work. The BIOS has always showed all my drives and has never hesitated to show them.
Thanks in advance,
B

Thanks for the fast reply. I read them earlier but was to busy to thank you all.
I never had all the CD-ROMS going until this past weekend, never bothered with getting long enough IDE cables (tall case-IDE's on bottom of board). I do have the burner as a mater and now I have the regular CD-ROM (never hooked up before)and a slave off the hard drive. I use more than one to reduce the wear and tear on the drives like mentioned above. I had an idea about the power supply being the problem. I did notice a big difference even though the two boards (Asus and MSI) were almost the same since having the same chipsets. The MSI board has an extra power connector and the Asus did not. After I seen the response about the power supply it hit me that the extra plug on the MSI might be draining more power causing my problems. Now my question is what power supply to get. Do I look at the ratings on the 3.3, 5, or 12v? Or do I look at all of them? I noticed after looking around that the 3.3v does not change much on different power supplies. I did find one that had the 5v rating at 50A, which is lot higher than mine. The only thing that worries me is that power supply is only $30. Did not know if companies made a habit of false specs. Since CD-ROMS use the 5v, should I get one with higher 5v or find something with all numbers higher?
Thanks for all your help.

Not knowing what you have tried, consider these two options:
One is a reload of Mavericks.
Two is to revert to your prior OS:

  • Upgrading to itunes 11 cd rom disappears, using windows 7

after installing itunes 11.4 and using windows 7 on pc, the cd rom disappeared, finally fixed that situation, but now having problem with when opening 11.1.3.8 itunes I get the message that the registry files to burn cds are missing and should reinstall itunes, which I am not going to do and start all over again and loss my cd rom drive, not going to happen!
so anyone have a fix to this problem, I tried to set the registry as per the instructions from apple to no avail, any help is welcomed, thanks!!! Dot

If you really want to roll back to 11.1 uninstall all iTunes/Apple components, restore a version of the library that was backed up during an upgrade past 11.1 as described in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash, then download and install from one of these direct links:
    iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-01-22)
    iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-01-22)
Note iTunes 11.1 was released back in January and there have been several updates since. You may have to go back to quite an old library file. See  iTunes Folder Watch for a tool that can help update the iTunes library so that it reflects the content of the media folder.
If you have trouble uninstalling or reinstalling see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
If you, or others, want the most recent version of iTunes prior to 12 then use these links instead:
    iTunes 11.4.0.18 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-09-09)
    iTunes 11.4.0.18 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-09-09)

  • CD ROM Drive has disappeared!!

I attempted to go through the steps posted here on how to get songs off your iPod back onto the music library on your PC (my laptop had crashed and I had to reload the operating software but didn't have a complete back-up of all my songs), and was unsuccessful. Now, in addition to that problem, my laptop is no longer reading the D: drive (CD ROM drive). It doesn't show up in Windows Explorer and when I put a CD in the drive it doesn't automatically start up as it did in the past. It's as if the D: drive no longer exists.
Anyone else encounter this problem and is there any fix other than reloading the operating software (which I just did and don't want to do again).
    Thanks.

Just a quick link, don't know if it's the right thing:

  • CD-ROM works for installer but disappears on boot

I'm having a strange issue. I got a Lenovo IdeaPad yesterday and promptly wiped vista off and installed Arch.
The install went swimmingly, but for some strange reason, the cdrom drive is not detected when I boot into Arch. I installed Arch from the CD and the device was /dev/sr0 during the installation but /dev/cdrom, /dev/dvd nor /dev/sr0 exist. I'm really confused as to why it worked during the install, but not when I booted off of my hard drive. I've updated all my packages and upgraded to to the newest kernel.
Also, the BIOS had two ATA settings: AHCI and "compatibility". I've tried both settings and tried reinstalling with both settings, but they don't appear to make a difference.

Risking the anger and wrath of the forum gods, I am bumping a verrrrry old topic.
It's close to five months since I first encountered this problem. I have waited patiently and kernel update after kernel update has brought me hope thinking that the new kernel would contain the magic fix for my problem. It's starting to get annoying, not being able to use my cdrom. So, I am once again throwing myself before the mercy of your wisdom, imploring you to supply the magic solution to my troubles.
I am once again putting debug info for good luck

  • DVD - rom disappeared after stand-by

After returning from stand-by position my DVD player is not being recognized .
    Motherboard: ms-6523 v 2.1
    processor: 850 pro2
    Is this a bios-setting problem ?

I won!! TSL632H_TO??.exe - it's just SFX-archive that can be unpacked by WinRAR (for example). And then we got SFDNWIN.exe program and firmware dump file (*.bin) separately, which can be used to upload firmware without any checks (compatible/non compatible).

  • 30GB of space disappears on External Drive after failed DMG copy via USB

I have a 298.1 GB external Western Digital hard drive connected to my iMac by a USB 2.0 cable. It is formatted in NTFS-3G so I can use it with both my PC and Mac. Yesterday in Disk Utility I created a 50GB 256-bit encrypted DMG and told Disk Utility to save it on a folder in my external drive. It got to about 20GB and then my house's power went out. A few hours later when the power came back on, I turned on my computer, and the available space on my external hard drive went down from about 100GB to 68.21GB.
The first thing I thought was that the DMG transfer ended prematurely so I should just find and delete the incomplete DMG from the hard drive. So I went to the folder I saved it in and it was not there. I checked all the folders and I couldn't find any DMG in there. Then I went to the root of the external drive and used Get Info to find the space each folder took up. It adds up to 194.12 GB. So I subtracted 194.12 from 298.1 and got 103.98. If I'm supposed to have 103.98 GB, why do I only have 68.21 GB available? I double and triple checked the size of everything on the disk and I still should have about 30GB more than I do. The 30GB just disappeared.
I tried verifying the disk in Disk Utility and got:

    2009-06-14 11:14:26 -0400:
I tried restarting my iMac and disconnected and reconnecting the cable and that didn't work. I plugged it into my PC and it still says that all the files on my external drive add up to 194.12 GB. Which still means I should have 103.98 GB of free space instead of 68.21 GB.
So I'm stumped now and not quite sure what to do. Here is the information about the external drive from Disk Utility:
    Name : SHADUSMEDIA
    Type : Volume
    Disk Identifier : disk1s1
    Mount Point : /Volumes/SHADUSMEDIA
File System : Windows NT Filesystem (NTFS-3G)
    Connection Bus : USB
    Device Tree : IODeviceTree:/PCI0@0/USB7@1D,7
    Writable : Yes
    Capacity : 298.1 GB (320,070,288,384 Bytes)
    Free Space : 68.3 GB (73,348,239,360 Bytes)
    Used : 229.8 GB (246,722,048,512 Bytes)
    Number of Files : 145,472
    Number of Folders : 0
    Owners Enabled : Yes
Can Turn Owners Off : No
    Can Repair Permissions : No
    Can Be Verified : Yes
    Can Be Repaired : Yes
    Can Be Formatted : Yes
    Bootable : No
    Supports Journaling : No
    Journaled : No
    Disk Number : 1
    Partition Number : 1
You can see on there it says I've used 229.8 GB, when I've actually only used 194.12 GB. Here are the specs from System Profiler for my iMac:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM51.0090.B09
    SMC Version: 1.8f2
    Serial Number: QP6450GKVUX
I'm running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6. If you need any more information just ask, I'd really like to get my 30GB back. Thanks in advance.

    Can anyone help?

  • K7T Turbo LE - Windows XP Pro SP-1 is not detecting my CD ROM drive I used to install XP Pro !!!!!!!

This is an XP driver issue that I'm not sure how to resolve.
This is a brand new K7T Turbo (MS-6330) Limited Edition motherboard (red-colored board, not green), Ver. 3 (no RAID controller on-board)
PSU is 400w (I tried another PSU, same issue)
    Athlon 850MHz socket-A
    CD-ROM drive - Yamaha CDR2100E 16x10x40  UDMA-1
The BIOS is 3.6, updated prior to Windows XP's installation
The VIA 4-in-1 drivers were updated with the latest available on MSI's website for the 6330
2 hard drives installed on the primary controller - one set to master, one set to slave
CD-ROM drive is the only device on the secondary controller, set to master with no slave, and is plugged-into the end IDE cable connector
The board detects the cd drive, and I even installed Windows XP Pro WITH this cd-rom drive, installed as currently configured, which is what pisses me off.  I've installed XP four times today, try different things between installs, and nothing.  The drive works FINE outside of XP, but as soon as XP starts, the drive disappears and XP doesn't even detect it.  Also, while booting up, the start screen will lock up (activity bar freezes and hard drive activity stops) for about ten seconds (but everything's hooked-up right... I'm not a PC rookie!).
HELP!  Please oh please help!!!!  I'm getting aggravated!
    Thanks!

  • Lost cd rom after upgrading to windows 8.1

    System information:
    Satellite C55-A5300
    Windows 8
Problem: This computer worked fine until last month when my son let it update to windows 8.1.  The cd rom then disappeared and he has to have the cd rom for his games.  I've tried everything I could find online, to restore his drive.  Yes the drive is functioning, it works fine in my laptop.  I tried to put mine in but it's not as slim as the Toshiba one.
    1) Doesn't show in Device Manager.
    2) Does show in Bios when I go to restore options, I've even tried running my Windows 7 disk from there, it starts but I don't want to put that on his laptop if I don't have to.
    3) CD rom does spin and the mouse swirls when you open and close the drive.
    4) Toshiba support wants money to fix it even though it has warranty still left on it. Not happening but I am going back to HP as my main brand they are always helpful.
    I have tried the following:
    1) Restoring to factory- it does not restore to factory settings, all files are left even though I chose the option to clean all.
    2) Rolled back to windows 8 from 8.1.....still nothing
    3) Tried- http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-hardware/missing-cddvd-drive-for-windows-... (still not showing in device manager)
    4) Tried- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us ( no change)
    5) Remove upper and lower filters....well only upper lower is not there
    6) many other online things, tips, and so on, no help
Please help, this is driving me nuts!  If I can't fix this how much trouble woul it be to downgrade to Win 7, I have seen threads where people were having problems finding drivers.  I don't want my son staring at me all day because he can't play his games... Thanks in advance!

    Downloads here.
You don't have too many choices. If restoring the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents, doesn't work...
Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery tab > Recovery tab > Remove everything and reinstall Windows
And creating a recovery drive to do that, doesn't work either...
Control Panel > Recovery > Create a recovery drive
Then you'll need to order recovery media from Toshiba.
Next time you upgrade to Windows 8.1, carefully follow these instructions.

  • DV9000 No longer recognizes my CD-ROM drive

HI guys, I am by no means a computer guy, but I have been trying to figure out why my laptop no longer recognizes my CD drive.  It had the 3 yellow exclimation points in the devise manager, 2 for Base System Device and 1 for Coprocesser.  I updated the drivers which did get rid of the exclimation points, but now my CD drive is no longer listed in the Device manager.  I did an internet search and it says I need to delete the upper and lower filters, but when I go to the registy as I am instructed there are no listings for either one.  Someone suggersted I install a virtual drive so I downloaded magicdisc which did bring the CD-ROM entry back to the device manager but its only the one for magicdisc, my origanal drive is still not recognized.  I have tried everything and would really appreciate any help you can offer.  Thanks

    Hi:
You can try one of the resolution steps, 2, 3, 4, or 5.
One of those steps will normally resolve the problem.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
The other problem that could be specifically related to your dv9xxx model, is the fact that the motherboard is going out and picked just now to do so.
Some of the most common problems with the dv9xxx motherboards are the sudden and unexplainable disappearances of:
    Wireless
    Audio
    DVD drive
    Video
These problems are all related to the motherboard defects that were prevalent in this model, and the only resolution you would have would be to replace the motherboard (not recommended), or use an external USB DVD drive.

  • Pavilion dv9700 DVD/CD ROM stopped working: Code 10 (This device cannot start.)

I have a HP Pavilion dv9700 running Windows 7 where the DV)D/CD ROM drive fails to be detected. I can still get it to open and close. The device manager gives an error: Code 10 (This device cannot start). I read somewhere that iTunes upgrades can cause DVD problems in HPs, and I did upgrade iTunes a couple of days ago. I did upgrade the BIOS a few moments ago, but it didn't help. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Thank you for the responses! Sorry it took me so long to implement--I wanted to back everything up first before messing with the registry. Following the instructions to delete lines in the registry AND uninstalling iTunes allowed for the DVD/CD ROM to pop up with an exclamation mark in my Device Manager. Updating the driver did not help as the computer said the driver was up-to-date. Mysteriously, when I rebooted, the DVD/CD ROM disappeared from the device manager again. I forgot to mention in the initial post that the DVD/CD ROM light blinks steadily at about two blinks/second. Any other ideas? I am wondering if this is a hardware failure now.

  • CD ROM Drive lost when installing iPod Nano

After installing my iPod Nano and iTunes my PC will no longer recognise it has a CD ROM drive.
Like a dummy I tried it on 2 PC's and now they are both stuffed!
Apple tech support don't have a clue.
I have uninstalled everything, even the CD ROM Drives and rebooted, hoping the plug and play would kick in but no luck - HELP

I now have a solution for this. I printed out the solution before it disappeared off the PB website so im quoting direct from my printout. If you are not familiar with using regedit then be careful or seek assistance.
    Packard Bell PC’s
Yellow exclamation mark in device manager against CD/DVD drives and drives not useable/visible on PC. Can happen after attempt Ipod Nano install.
To fix involves running and modifying system registry editor
1 Click START then RUN type REGEDIT and click ok
2 Locate and then delete the following registry values:
    HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE\SYSTEM\currentcontrolsset\control\class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-B FC1-08002BE10318}-
This string will be visible in the right hand pane of registry editor and will have a yellow folder beside it.
When you open the folder that has the above string immediately to the right of it then in the right hand pane of registry editor a list of values will appear.
Reading from top to bottom they will probably be a list of items each having an icon with the letters ab in red.
    The list is
    Default
    Class
    Enumproppages32
    Icon
    Installer2
    Lowerfilters
    Noinstallclass
    Silentinstall
    Troubleshooter=0
    upperfilters
Now click on lowerfilters to highlight it then delete it,do the same for upper filters. When you’ve done this, drop down the file menu (top left hand corner) and click exit then power off the pc and restart)
If you’ve done this correctly all should be well, the nano should work and the DVD drives will be present.

  • Dvd drive disappeared

The dvd drive on my HP Pavilion laptop disappeared!  How do I fix this.  I need to look at some dvd/cd now.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now visable and working.
If it still isn't, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it is now visable and working.
