Disappearing screen

Questioon:  How can I prevent my screen from disappearing when I am still typing? I have an iMac 10.8.3. Sometimes I can retrieve the screen by clicking on the top left arrow, sometimes it disappears altogether. Can I alter the preferences to anchor the screen in some way? Even when the screen doesn't disappear it often shifts slightly to the right.

Take it to your local apple store and they should replace it. just tell them what is going on.

  • Problem with sleep & log in screen - log in disappears & screen goes black

System: Mid 2009 MBPro 15". 4GB memory. 59.98 GB of 500 GB free. 10.7.2. External devices: Time Capsule, but not all the time.
My MacBook Pro has been developing this issue over the last several weeks. It is happening more and more frequently and I am afraid I may lose everything.
Another poster had a similar problem, which I have excerpted to save time (and he described it very well):
Scenario: Plugged into a power adapter, I close the lid of the machine to put it to sleep. When I open the lid to log back in, the screen comes up for approximately 4-5 seconds, then goes black. I cannot type fast enough to get logged in before it goes black. In fact, it seems to go black faster when I try to type.
If I close the lid while on battery power, everything works normally - although a couple of times today, it happened exactly as described above.
In addition, with the machine plugged in, I can close the lid, open it, wait for the screen to go black, UNPLUG it, and the screen comes back like nothing is weird. - again, this pretty much stopped working this afternoon.
I also noticed that when plugged in and the screen goes black, the white standby light never starts "breathing." When on battery power, however, it starts "breathing" normally.
Please help. My entire life (and career!) is on this machine.

It is not easy to say why this happen. In your last posting you wrote about some windows updates. Who knows what is wrong there.
If nothing helps, not even system restore and you want to use stand-by mode I recommend you to back-up all your data and install OS again using recovery mode.
With factory settings everything will be OK again but then be careful with updates.

  • Windows 8.1 boots to a black screen, I have to forcibly resart

    System Specs:
    2014 Macbook Pro
    Intel i7 2.5 GHz Processor
Nvidia 750m Graphics Card/Intel Iris Pro?
    16 CB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory
    OSX 10.9.4 Software
Inquiring about boot up to 64 bit Windows 8.1
So last night, I left my computer alone while it installed a windows update. When I came back, the apple login screen was open. This evening, I booted up to windows just fine, signed in, but quickly had to close the machine because I had to go back to my dorm. Got back, opened it up, booted up ACIV: Black Flag. Ubisoft Symbol and Abstergo Symbol display, and then the screen goes totally black, and the system stops making sound. I hard restart and attempt to reboot to windows. The spinning dots appear, disappear, screen looks like it's about to load into the windows login, goes totally dark. Hard restart again, this time I go all the way to OSX, sign in, restart from there. I reboot to windows and I am greeted by the spinning sign and a "please wait" message. It boots to a blue screen that tells me that there was a problem with the boot, gives the option to restart or browse the advanced recovery options. I browse, choose to reboot, hold down the option key, select windows and again it loads into a total black screen. Before I try again, and risk bricking my machine, does anyone know what's going on? What should I do?
    Thanks, guys.

I've been manually updating the drivers via the Nvidia app. Last ones I installed were the game ready drivers for AC:U.
I fixed the problem, however. I got the reboot/fix options up again and chose to fix it using a device, selected OSX as the device and rebooted from OSX. Everything was fine from there.

  • Screen sharing on local network - broken on snow leopard

I will try to be clear:
problem is: cannot get a screen sharing window on mac mini when accessing from macbook pro on local network. Problem began after clean install on snow leopard all computers.
setup: 1 mac mini, two macbook pros (1 is 1st gen, 1 2nd gen), all connected through Airport Wireless N basestations.
filesharing works fine. all computers recognised.
when i connect to screen sharing, blue bar comes for a minute, then goes off, then on again, then after a couple more minutes just disappears. screen sharing does not give me an error message, just stops trying. please help, getting fairly desparate.
    best,
    Charles

This is not normal. Although I have no experience with screen sharing SL-to-SL, I have no problems connecting from my MBP running SL to several other machines running older systems.
What might be different between my setup and yours I'm not sure. But here are a few things:
    1) At home, I'm also using an 'n' AirPort Extreme base station, but I'm using 'g' mode, because my MBP is the only machine in the house capable of 'n' speeds. No problems with the PB G4 or iMac G5 running Leopard.
    2) At my wife's office, we're using a LinkSys router (not an 'n' router), and no problems accessing the screen of a headless Intel Mac Mini running Tiger.
    3) You mention base stations, emphasis on the "s". If you have multiple base stations, that could be the problem. Have you tried simplifying the network so there's only one base station in use?
    4) What settings are you using for Screen Sharing in System Preferences -> Sharing? Look both in the main window and in the window that pops up if you push the Computer Settings button.

  • App Store icon shows updates available, but all apps up to date

Just bought Iphone 5c, second day, App store icon shows updates available, but PC, store and other Iphones show none.  Tried resetting, updates to ios 8.02, synching, going through each app individually to see if there is an update, no luck.
Wnen I reset, the icon shows a badge with 7 updates available.  I opened App Store, bottom right (update icon) showed the same.  Tapped it, the update screen appears (as normal), and the 7 on the update icon disappeared, screen says UPDATES All apps are up to date.  However, on the home screen, the App store badge still shows 7 updates.
Anyone else having the same prob?  What is the fix?

Tried that, tries a soft reset, and a hard reset, no luck.  Funny thing is, my other iphones and IPad work fine, its just the Iphone 5.

  • Startup loop

    Hey all,
I have an iBook G4 that is stuck in an infinite startup loop. I am running OS 10.4.8 and this started to happen after an application update. It said the computer had to restart, and now it is just stuck in a loop. The "Starting OS X" screen comes up, disappears, screen changes colors, the pointer comes up, that goes away, screen changes, the "Starting OS X" screen comes up again, and keeps going in that loop. So if anyone has/had this problem and/or knows how to fix it, please let me know.

    if you use 10.4:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270
archive and install puts in new system folder - it does not affect applications, make sure "preserve user and network settings" is selected, any kind of installation is risky though:
"..Important: This option leaves non-Apple-installed (third-party) items intact, though they may be moved, depending on their location. Usually it's best to reinstall third-party software after an Archive and Install installation to ensure they work correctly..", so try at your own risk.
again, no way to know what's causing the problem yet, hopefully it's just OS got corrupted.

  • I can not export my slideshow to any format. iPhoto always lost some photos for me.

For example, I make a slideshow with 12 photos, but when I export this slideshow to 'Display' format, just only 2 or 3 photos in it. Anyone tell me how to fix?

I am having this same issue:  exported slideshow eventually photos disappear, screen is white but music continues.
I am on a brand new Mac Book Pro OS X  10.7.3
    Using iPhoto 11
I did not use the Ken Burns effect - Classic instead
I have 404 photos set to music a put into Garage Band and exported into iTunes.
It plays perfect in iPhoto, which all photos at the right moments with the songs.
Then one photo skips by quickly without a transition  and a number of photos are then not seen which causes the syncronization with music to alter.
Then the photos stop all together screen turns white and the music continues.
Need to burn it to DVD have exported it twice with different results but both similar to above, each time.
One poster said the computer got too hot and he believed exporting stopped. He tried putting a fan near to keep cool and then it worked.  Sounds a bit impossible.
    Thoughts?  Thanks.

  • I can not export BioBench data to Excel format

My data acquisition driver software is NI-DAQ, and data acquisition software is Biobench (Version 1.2). It work very well before. But recently, When I want to export data from Biobench into Excel, it told me ' Error, make sure your Excell has been installed correctly'. In fact, I didn't do any change to my computer since I installed BioBench.
    What should I do?
    Thank you.

  • Hero article not visible

    Okay, I have another issue.
I'm using CC2014 and this Tutorial...
How to make and style a web page in Dreamweaver | Adobe Dreamweaver CC tutorials
...is based on a previous version, so some things aren't where they're supposed to be.  I fixed my footer tag issue, completed the tutorial, then went on to the bonus section.
I got the hero article placed, but the relative position in my page is way off from what it is in the tutorial. In order to get it to display in that area, I have to set the position at -368pixels. I think in the tutorial, it's at 17.
Then, when I get it positioned correctly (?), it only appears on the screen in Live View. Meaning, when I view the page in a browser, the hero article disappears (screen caps below).
    What's up with that?  :-)
    Now you see it...
    Now you don't.

If you used e-mail to post this code, it was badly munged in translation.  Best to post code directly into the web forum not with e-mail.  However, if that really is your code you're in big trouble.

    <h2>Riding the Cable Cars</h2>
<p>No visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the  iconic cable cars that climb up the vertiginous hills of the city. Of the  twenty-three lines established between 1873 and 1890, three remain: two routes  from downtown near Union Square to <a href="http://www.fishermanswharf.org/">Fisherman's Wharf</a>, and a third route along  California Street.</p>
<p>The cable cars rely on cables running constantly beneath the  road&rsquo;s surface. The driver—or gripman—uses a lever to grip the cable to pull  the car and its passengers up the hill. The gripman requires not only great  strength, but also great skill. He needs to know where to release the cable to  coast over crossing cables and points. The conductor works in close cooperation  with the gripman, operating the brake at the rear of the car to prevent it from  running out of control on the downward slopes.</p>

    <h2>Cable Car Tips</h2>
<p>A single ride on a cable car costs $6. If you plan to travel  around the city, it&rsquo;s often cheaper to buy a <a href="http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/passports.htm">Muni Passport</a>, which gives you  unlimited rides on San Francisco&rsquo;s extensive public transport system, including  the cable cars (but not the <a href="http://www.bart.gov/">BART subway system</a>). Even a single-day passport  ($14) will save you money if you make a return trip, and stop off to visit  Chinatown one way.</p>
<p>There are often long lines at the cable car terminus,  particularly on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde routes. If you don&rsquo;t want to  wait, try walking a few stops along the route. The conductor usually leaves a  small number of places to pick up passengers on the way. The California Street  route is generally less crowded (but not as spectacular).</p>

  • Mountain Lion on Mac Mini - WiFi unstable for Internet Sharing

I have a Mac Mini Mid 2010 MC270LL/A previously on 10.6.8 and everything worked fine.
I have it plugged into a Plasma TV via HDMI and network via CAT6, but it also doubles as a WiFi access point via Internet Sharing.
Previously WiFi was secured via WEP, I don't recall if 10.6.8 had anything stronger, most likely not, otherwise I would have gone WPA2.
I have now done a clean install of 10.8. ie erase hard drive, boot from USB and lay down a clean install of Mountain Lion.
Software update downloaded a new Firmware, which has also been applied and rebooted.
Now I've set-up Internet Sharing, used same SSID (maybe should have picked a new one in hind-sight), but secured via WPA2 - the only option.
Previously my Macbook Air 13" MC965LL/A, had undergone the same clean install treatment via wipe, then boot from USB and install 10.8.
The Wifi worked flawlessly with Macbook Air on 10.8 connecting to Mac Mini on 10.6.8 (Secured via WEP), no drop outs, connected even after sleep.
Even the power nap feature worked really well, I was impressed that when I open the lid on the Macbook Air, I had emails already waiting for me.
Now with the Mac Mini on 10.8, it's a really sad state, constant WiFi dropouts, my File Sharing disappears, Screen Sharing stops, it's a real pain.
I'm hoping it's not the new firmware, I guess I'll find out when I restore to 10.6.8 and see how it goes.
Anyone else have issues with Mac Mini WiFi on 10.8 ?

  • IMac goes to sleep; won't wake up

After burning my first DVD I noticed the iMac goes to sleep, the light pulsating for a few moments then it disappears (screen is still dark) and it will not wake by touching keyboard or moving the mouse. (I had to unplug it and hit start-up button to get iMac back up & running).
It seems to run fine except for this sleep issue. I can re-awake it at the stage where the screen saver is still on; after that it's in a coma. I have deleted the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file (suggested by Dale in another post).
I know I can set the computer to "Never" go to sleep but is that a viable option? And, may this sleep problem be a symptom showing some problem exists w/ the power supply or the logic board as I've seen described in other posts. i.e. Should I be calling in the Apple Care people to diagnose my comatose Mac?

I called Apple Care; the tech ran through a process involving unplugging all peripherals, etc etc; the end result being that my iMac is diagnosed w/ a power supply issue. It will qualify to be repaired under the iMac G5 Repair Extension Plan, free of charge. (My iMac also needed a logic board to be replaced 6 months after purchase in Jan. 2005.) My advice: don't purchase the "first generation" of a product line; too often the kinks haven't yet been worked out. If you must make such a purchase, buy the extended warranty (the ProCare plan) and protect your investment.

  • On Screen Keyboard Glitch in Tablet Mode - On Screen Keyboard minimizes / disappears / slides down

    Hi there -
New Yoga owner here ( just bought it yesterday) and within minutes of setting the computer up I noticed that the on screen keyboard was malfunctioning when the yoga is in tablet mode. Specifically, it pops up for about a second and then, without me touching or clicking or doing anything, it quickly slides back down. repeated attempts to bring up the keyboard end up, frustratingly, with the same result. what is perplexing to me is the on screen keyboard works fine in laptop mode (when I need it least).
Someone else already started a post on this BUT it was marked as 'solved' (which it wasn't) so I figured I'd start new thread. The solution on the previous thread was to simply 'refresh' windows to get rid of any new drivers that were downloaded since purchasing the yoga, but I did not download or update anything prior to this problem arising (as I said, the problem seemed to occur within a few minutes of turning the machine on for the first time). In any case, I tried the refresh and it did not work so clearly my problem is not that I downloaded an incompatible or faulty driver. Please Help! I love this machine and I'm trying to see past the other flaws I've noticed so far (subtle screen flickering, inconsistent touch sensitivity etc), but this issue is starting to really undermine my confidence in the product quality and, from a productivity standpoint, it is a real deal breaker to not have full tablet functionality.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had the same problem with the disappearing virtual keyboard within hours of starting to use my new Yoga 13.  I read somewhere that it was a problem with an incompatible Synaptics driver, and when I looked in the control panel, it showed that the Synaptics driver had been updated on my Yoga as of the day I bought it.  I think somehow by agreeing to automatic updates of the software, the Synaptics driver is updated to an incompatible version.   So what I did was I removed the Synaptics driver, using the Windows program uninstaller tool, rebooted, and then found the Synaptics driver at the Lenovo site which is specifically labelled as the Yoga 13 driver.  I installed that, and the keyboard is now working fine.

  • In normal view, half the page disappears off right of screen. in full screen this does not happen. what can be done to correct the screen ratio for normal screen?

version 5 loaded on windows 7. all went well for a while. one day while using, ratio of normal screen doubled in width; i.e. half the page disappears off the screen to the right (on a wide screen). when full screen mode applied, ratio is fine. it only happens in normal view, which is the usually prefered option. I cannot determine any means within the program to resize the normal screen. nothing else is affected, only mozilla firefox in normal view. not that when program is opened from keyboard the page is correct for a moment, then enlarges the width with 1/2 page dissappearing.

This issue can be caused by the Babylon Toolbar 1.1.8 extension
