Disappearing shared printer...

Recently aquired an AEBS and generally very impressed. However, this error is particularly irritating.
I have a shared printer (Epson Stylus Photo R200) connected by USB to an iMac. Note it's connected to the Mac, NOT the AEBS.
This printer is used wirelessly by my Macbook and various PCs.
All is fine, unless the iMac goes to sleep, in which case the shared printer disappears off the network.
Restarting the AEBS allows the printer to reappear on the network.
This didn't happen with my old Linksys router.
Any clues anyone? Most printer postings involve the USB on the AEBS - this is different. I've tried reinstalling the printer, latest drivers etc., but I'm convinced the fault lines with the AEBS - hence the post.
Currently using 7.2 firmware.
Any suggestions, much appreciated.

There was a thread on this recently, about how remote printers are deleted when the system is put to sleep:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5773144&#5773144
I believe this is a CUPS issue and that a fix for this will have to come from Apple; I don't think there is a workaround. You could report this to Apple via their feedback, but the thread above mentions that a bug was filed with Apple about this.
Hope this helps.

  • Tiger machines can't print to Leopared shared printer

I have an HP Laserjet 1320 connected to my Mac Mini (Leopard) and this works as expected with that machine. I have tried sharing this, and other machines on my network (all running Tiger) can connect to port 631 on the Mini and print test pages. However, they can't actually print anything from any application. Instead, a dialog box saying simply "Error while printing" pops up.
All the Mini's cups logs look fine, but the other machines say such things as:
    I [13/Nov/2007:20:09:26 +0000] Added remote printer "HPLaserJet_1320series@utovogh"...
    E [13/Nov/2007:20:09:35 +0000] getprinterattrs: resource name '/printers/ ' no good!
Configuring the printer as an IPP printer rather than relying on bonjour gives different effects. The job starts to print but then the printer is stopped. The printing machines' logs say:
    I [13/Nov/2007:21:01:22 +0000] [Job 3] Connected to utovogh.local...
    D [13/Nov/2007:21:01:22 +0000] [Job 3] Getting supported attributes...
    E [13/Nov/2007:21:01:22 +0000] PID 412 stopped with status 1!
E [13/Nov/2007:21:01:22 +0000] [Job 3] Destination printer does not exist!
    Has anyone any suggestions?

    Eventually I discovered the following.
When setting up the client machines to print to the shared printer, the machine hosting the printer identified itself with bonjour as $HOSTNAME.local. Upon looking at http://localhost:631 on the client machines I noticed that the printer was identified as $PRINTER_NAME@$HOSTNAME, the ".local" part having disappeared. So, the solution was to add an entry to /etc/hosts on the clients.
Next, to find out why printing is so slow from the clients...

  • Shared printing on 10.3.9 iMac from MBP with 10.5.5 (worked then not!)

Panther 10.3.9 on iMac (Host with HP PS C3180 for shared printer attached via USB) - Leopard 10.5.5 cannot find the shared printer after it was already working for 3 weeks. Shared printer in Leopard disappeared. When attempting to reinstall the shared printer on the MacBook with Leopard it cannot find the shared printer. (At ALL). Have, reset printers (in Leopard), executed Article: HT2275, turned off firewall, on both machines and wireless router, reset both computers and router. Have 4 hours into finding the solution without success. iMac sees the printer when attached to MacBook but cannot print to it. PowerBook will not see the shared printer on the iMac and of course the shared printer function is enabled on the iMac. Any ideas? Jobs hire some of Gates old windows programmers to do Leopard print sharing? HELP!

    Hi there,
It is unusual that you still cannot see the 10.3.9 shared printer after changing to the cups browsing protocol (as per HT2275). Is there any chance that you run the Reset printing system after making this change, as this will reset the browsing protocol to Bonjour.
I would also check that the MacBook Pro can see the iMac. If you look at the Shared section of the Finder sidebar on 10.5, does the iMac appear in this view?

  • Printing to a Shared Printer on Windows

    Hello,
I just purchased my very first iMac. Been a WIndows guy since there was a Windows so it's a pretty steep learning curve. I have a Windows Server at home that has a shared printer. I can successfully setup the Printer in System Preferences - Print and Fax. The problem I'm having is that whenever I try to print something, I see the following error in status screen:
    "Error: /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpll.app/Contents/MacOS /rastertoescpll failed"
I also tried printing a test page thru the printer setup. The iMac prompts me for my password, I see the job disappear from the print queue but nothing comes out of the printer and I receive no errors. If I jump to my Windows Home Server and print a test page, it comes out correctly so from a connectivity standpoint, everything appears functional.
    Help!!!!
    -- Val

    Hi Victor,
This is a Windows Home Server that I built myself. I can get to my shares just fine from my Mac. My iTunes library is on a shared drive on my home server and I noticed that when I restart my Mac, it cannot find the library. I have to click on Select Library, navigate to my share drive on my Windows Home Server and that's it. I've already saved my password to the keychain so I never get prompted to enter a password.
When I go to Printer Fax from the Settings option, I can see my printer and it's status. I can click on the Print Queue and see that the printer is Ready.
If I click on Printer Setup and then select to Print a Test Page, I see that the Status reads "On Hold (Authentication Required). I enter my password and I can see that the Job Queue is looking like it's printing the job however nothing comes out of the printer.
When I print from TextEdit or from Safari is when I get the error I've referenced.
This is so frustrating 'cause it's all new but I know that it will only get better the more I use my new Mac.

  • 10.9 laptop doesn't print to shared printer

I had a 10.7 MacBook Air which printed just fine to a Lexmark 500n color printer shared from an olg G4 powerbook laptop. I upgraded it to a 10.9 MacBook Air, and added the printer as usual. When I print, it goes through the process and the file eventually disappears from the queue, but it never actually prints, and before it disappears from the list, I see "printing - the process gziptoany stopped unexpectedly with status 1". How do I debug this?

The printer is a Evolis Pebble 4.  It was originally connected to an otherwise unused Mac Mini running 10.4 via USB.  This happened when trying to print from a relatively old (2008) and a newer (late 2013) iMac, both running 10.9.  Until recently, most of our iMacs were running 10.6, and were able to print to the 10.4 Mini without issues.  The newer iMac had never been able to print to this printer, but solving that trouble was not a priority until we switched everyone's iMac.
Our 10.9 iMacs were able to "discover" the shared printer from the 10.4 Mini in the normal ways.  So, I don't think it was a bonjour/mdns issue.
I found OS X Mavericks: Solve printing problems which states that a shared printer needs to be on 10.5 or later, so I dug up another Mini which had 10.5 on it and tried that.  The results were the same.
That's when I noticed that Evolis had two drivers: one for 10.5-10.6, and another for 10.6-10.9.
After upgrading the Mini to 10.6, and installing the newer driver, I was able to print from 10.9 to the printer shared by the MIni.  So, problem solved.
As an aside, when the Mini was running the older Evolis driver, the iMac did not automatically choose its driver for the printer.  When the Mini was running the newer driver, the iMac automatically selected the correct driver.  This might be because of something left over from the previous attempt to set up the printer on the iMac; or, it might be a "feature" of the shared printer's broadcast/response.
    Thanks for your response!

  • Losing Prints on Shared Printer

I posted this on a different discussion and was advised to post here. Here is a link to that post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3834099#3834099
I have searched and searched these discussions to no avail for a fix to my problem. I have found fixes for my Boy Scout troops Windows machine shared print problem, but not for my iMac, so here I go.
I have an iMav DV 400 with an Airport card and an iMac G5 1.9 with Airport Extreme with an Epson Stylus Photo R200 connected to it by USB. All these go through a D-Link DI524 wireless router.
I can print wonderfully with the G5 through USB and the Windows machine through the wireless, but I can't get the G4 to print. The G4 seems to stream the prints to its print spooler, then it disappears from there to wind up in the bit bucket somewhere. Nothing shows in the log of the G5 and the printer never acts like it wants to print.
My son tries to use the G4 for homework, but not being able to print makes it tough.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Todd,
First of all I would have a look at the cups error log (Applications > Utilities > Console > /var/logs/cups/error_log) on the G4. This may give some clues why the job is failing to spool to the G5.
On the G4, can you explain how you are adding the printer. I know that for a number of the Epsons you need to go to More Printers and then select Epson USB before selecting the model. What I don't know is if you still need to do the same for connecting to a shared printer.
    Regards,
    Paul

  • Printing from Windows 8 to a shared printer on a Windows 7 machine

WE have a a user that has a laser printer on A windows 7 machine that others in the office can access EXCEPT the one person on a Windows 8 machine. We have tried everything, but cannot get her to print to this printer. Says it cannot be found. What does
Windows 8 need to see a printer on a Win 7 workstation. She does have access to network printers and her own.
    Thanks.

We have the same kind of problem but a bit different.
Dell Printer (used for years shared on a network) was moved to our Windows 7 machine plugged in via USB.  We only use a plain workgroup with no Domain as we also have Macs on the network.
I have Macs using shared printer, a Windows XP using the shared printer, and even Windows 7 under Parallels on the Macs using the shared printer no problem.
I had the lone Windows 8 laptop using the shared printer but then it just stopped working.  So I deleted it and now when I try to add it is want credentials and none work.  It will not connect to the shared printer on the Windows 7 machine.
I have Windows 7 (which also has a couple shared drives that do work) set for No Homegroup and No Password for sharing - pretty much open as we are behind a Cisco Firewall to the outside.  No firewalls on the pcs.
Not sure where to go from here...

  • Can't connect to shared printer on Windows 7 Pro x64

I have a print server on Windows 2008 Standard and I have drivers installed for both x86 and x64 archs. The ricoh printer seems to work fine on windows 7 pro x64 but the hp printer will not work correctly. It seems to download/install the drivers but when actually connecting to the printer it errors out.
It says cannot connect to printer.
I can add the printer manually if I use tcp/ip printing instead of connecting to the shared printer. I can't figure out why its not working. Has anyone else seen an error like this? I'm not really sure what is causing this issue.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the post.
Please also let us know the exact model of this HP printer.
If possible, please reproduce this issue on the Windows7 client and collect the relevant information for further research.
    Step 1: Download Process Monitor
    ======================
    1. Please download the Process Monitor at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
    2. Extract the zip file to Desktop.
    Step 2: Clean Boot
    =============
Let's disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps:
    1. Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility.
    2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
    4. Click "OK" to restart your computer to Selective Startup environment.
    5. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
    6. Check whether or not the issue still appears in this environment.
Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later.
    Step 3: Collect the Information
    =====================
    1. Open Procmon.exe (Process Monitor).
    2. Reproduce this issue.
    3. After that, please click Capture in the tool bar (or directly press Ctrl+E) in Process Monitor.
    4. Click Save, in the prompt window, selects “All Events”.
    5. Click Browser Button (The button is right to “Path”), in the prompt window, click Desktop, type “test” (without the quotation marks) in the File Name box and press Enter.
    6. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
For your convenience, I have created a workspace for you.  You can upload the information files to the following link.  (Please choose "Send Files to Microsoft")
    Workspace URL: (https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=7f161e43-e9d9-4654-9077-88c9f57137c6)

  • Trouble connecting OSX to a shared printer on Vista

I am running OSX 10.4 and can't seem to get it to print to Vista. This is the weird thing. Firstly, I can access shared folders on Vista from OSX, I can print to the printer hooked up to Vista from Vista on Parallels, I can print to the printer connected to my PC from XP through boot camp but I just can't print from OSX direct. So to make that clear I can run Vista on my Macbook Pro with Parallels and print to the network shared printer no trouble at all but not from say Pages or Keynote.
Has anyone got this problem or any suggestions? I have tried customer support and they suggested a few things I had already done like Bonjour, Option button - Windows printing through Samba, Network Neighbourhoood and a few others but with no success. Please help. I am thinking it may be a compatibility issue with Vista, OSX and Printing Service but being this new to Mac I can't be sure of that by a long shot. Thanks for your time guys.

  • Pages 2.0.2 won't print to shared printer

help! i'm at the end of my rope here.
pages used to print to my shared printer no problem. but since a hard drive failure in my powerbook g4 1.33 it's been no dice.
since getting the hd, everything has been reinstalled: 10.4.8, epson printer drivers, iworks; EVERYTHING. other apps print to the shared printer fine. (the shared printer is on a home network, connected to a mac pro. access via a wireless router (dlink))
i tried resetting the powerbook's PMU/PRAM. still, a popup window says: "error while printing."
when the PB is directly connected to the printer 'pages' prints fine, only to the shared printer. nothing on the network has changed at all. (except one of my attempts to fix this was to reset the printer system on the mac pro)
i've tried all the suggestions in the forum (searching for 'pages print error'), this includes turning off duplicate fonts with fontbook, resetting the printer system on the PB in various ways as suggested, deleting pref files and the like.
    steps to print involve these:
    1. open pages.
    2. open file
    3. select print, select shared printer.
    4. click print.
    5. a slight pause for about 1sec then the error message comes up: Error when printing.
any subsequent try at printing the same file or another file the message pops up immediately with no delay.
what am i missing? is there something on the network side?
i can't think of anything else to check. i've looked at apple support articles till the wee hours of the morning.
can someone offer any suggestions? you would have my undying gratitude!!
    cheers and happy holidays,
    sean

    hey folks,
i've used app zapper to delete pages and then re-installed it. same thing happens. no luck.
are there any other setting that pages might access? does PMSessionValidatePrintSettings refer to Print Manager?
could it be permissions on the print manager's plist file? i'm just guessing as there was a slight name change on her user name when her settings, etc. were imported thru the migration assistant after the hd failure. it's a guess as i've run into this problem when switching from my PPC to the Intel. my user name went from seanw to sean and some of my apps were still labeled with the old "seanw" as the owner. (this was because i dragged and dropped some stuff instead of using the MA as i didn't know it existed.)
if no solution presents itself how would i go about transferring my wife's user profile to another, new profile with out too much headache?
would i create the new user and use MA to transfer her stuff from her backup?
thanks for the suggestions, you have no idea how much this is appreciated.
    cheers,

  • Printing to a Windows XP shared printer

I have long printed from my Macbook with Snow Leopard to my Windows XP computer with a shared printer. I began encountering intermittent connection issues, so I reset my printers. Now when I go to add a printer, under Windows, I see my Windows XP computer, but I get the "unable to connect to server" message. I have been able to add my IP printer, but I cannot add any USB shared printers on my Windows network. I can still connect to my Windows XP computer as a server.
I have scoured the forums and tried many different fixes, repaired permissions, etc. Now I'm at wit's end. Any suggestions?

Kappy, thanks for the input. Your suggestions didn't solve my problem, but through your links I was able to find another fix at macwindows.com relating to modifying the WINS settings and it worked. See below. Thanks!
+Daniel Hoit also sent configuration info for accessing Windows shares, and disagreed with a previous reader about Leopard's file sharing:+
+Samba based services are updated to reflect revisions to the open source Samba project in Leopard, and are not a step backwards. The addition of packet signing alone is a huge and welcome addition.+
+As for the poster's complaints regarding WINS workgroup and Finder browsing, the options are still there in Leopard. You can configure the WINS information in System Preferences/Network/ Advanced/WINS section. Choose a workgroup, and choose a wins server if you have one on your network.+

  • Printing to a Windows shared printer, keep getting "Hold for Authentication" when I'm on the Windows shared network and can browse the computers.

I have had two MacBook Pros now, and this has been an issue in Mountain Lion and Mavericks. I've got a shared printer on the local Windows network (it's a USB printer shared via the network and the computer), and the other Windows computers in the house can print to it no problem. The Mac sees it no problem, yet whenever I try to print to it, I just get "Hold for Authentication."
Like I said, persists over Mountain Lion and Mavericks. No other computer in the house has any issues printing to it. I've installed the drivers for the printer as well (Brother HL-2240).
I've tried to follow the instructions here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23268762#23268762 but the printer isn't listed in Keychain Access.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!
    Patrick Campanale

Well, that isn't too useful. Try this instead: Adding a printer shared by a Windows computer via SMB/CIFS.
You may find more by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching for articles by keyword.

  • Can't print to Windows 7 shared printer from Mac OS Lion

    Dear all,
I would like to share my experience battling to figure out how to print to Windows 7 shared printer from Mac OS Lion. Myself had this problem and looking throughly in internet without success. But finally I figured out the solution by myself, hope this can help other Mac user with similar problem.
OK, when I try to setup my new MacBook Pro with OS Lion to connect with my Canon MX308 printer attached to desktop with Windows 7 Ultimate,
    1. I simply select System Preferences>Print & Scan.
    2. Then looks for the + sign just below the box to add a new printer.
    3. From the option toolbar above, I select Windows. I have connect this MacBook with my Windows Network, so the workgroup will appear to the left column.
    4. After I select this group, the computer list will appear in the middle column
    5. Then after I select the computer which my printer connected to, my printer sharename will appear in the right column
    6. Last step is to select the printer I want to use.
    7. After that it will automatically put your printer sharename to the "Name". And then I select my printer driver at "Print Using" and find my printer manufacturer which is Canon MX300 series from driver lists. Finish!
My printer appear in the Printers List. But the problem is everytime I try to print there will be error message saying "ON HOLD Authentication Required".
This problem start to kill me, I search all around for similar problem, but the solution was never worked for me!
Until just now I figured out accidentally for the solution.
THE PROBLEM LIES ON MY PRINTER DRIVER!!!! Although I have downloaded the most update driver from Apple site and Apple Software update said there is no more update for my system!
The solution for my problem is Gutenprint Printer Driver! You can download this driver at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php, then select for the latest driver gutenprint-5.2.7.dmg. Install this driver!
Then back to Print & Scan in System Preferences, then right click on Printers List box, then choose "Reset Printing System..." to clear the previous failed printers.
After that, repeat the above step 2 - 7. Only for the last step I need to select the Printer Driver for my Canon MX308 for the driver name : "Canon PIXMA MX300 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7"
Now I can sleep as a baby knowing that my printer make a friend with my new Macbook Pro! Hope this will help others!

I have the same setup but with a Canon MX850.  This did not fix my problem.
