Disappearing Songs

When I connected my Ipod Touch (4g) to my WIndows XP PC on iTunes I selected transfer purchases from my iPod and after having to restart the process(crashed) I realized I had lost significant amount of songs. (missing entire albums) How do I get them back?

Hi, the only thing I can suggest is: (if missing from iPod: re sync the albums to it), (if missing from iTunes: Go to the store menu[at the top] and press check for available downloads) I hope you have at least some success.

  • Disappearing Songs on iPod - Thank you Apple!

4000 songs gone, about 1 months of work ripping my CD Lib lost. Thank you Apple Engineers!
    Background:
When I Rip a CD, I store temporaly the files on my PC HD, then I update the iTune Music List, then I synchronize the iPod. Afterward, I delete the file from my PC but keep the song names in the iTune libray list. They are flagged with an error "cannot locate the original file", but it has never been a problem, and so it is specified in the help on line.
    iTune 5.0.1 Upgrade:
When I upgraded to 5.0.1, all the files on the Ipod with a file name in iTune Library that cannot be located on the PC HD, disappeared from the iPOD. I still have a 4000 songs list in iTune but no more files in the iPod. That is marvelous!
    ------

I concur that you have identified a serious design flaw in the iPod / iTunes interface.
I encountered a similar disaster when I moved to a new machine (windows). I installed iTunes, connected my fully loaded ipod with all my songs, ratings, playlists, etc. and proceeded to connect to the iPod. I didn't notice the small print in the connection dialog box that comes up to tell you that the libary in iTunes did not match that in the iPod, clicked yes and the system overwrote all of my iPod information with 'nothing'. Several months of organizing and rating songs were lost.
Now, several months later, I have yet another disaster in the making. I have two profiles on my Windows machine (thanks to my local IT system afministrator), with 'My iTunes' library files created in both. For god knows what reason, both these files have been corrupted (e.g. lost my playlists, ratings, links to song folders and neither matches the configuration on my iPod!!!
The system has no ability to upload the config and song information from my iPod to iTunes, and all iTunes does is threaten to over-write the iPod. This will once again wipe out all of my information.
It seems to me that the Engineers at Apple need to change the linkage between iPod and iTunes giving the end-user more control to upload or download info from an iPod and to Merge the songs, lists, etc.

  • Vanishing or Disappearing Songs and Albums

I have a problem with iTunes that I can't work out how to fix.
Albums/songs that I have downloaded in the past appear in iTunes fine. Albums/songs that I am downloading now (either from a CD or online) appear in iTunes initally but then 'disappear' when I close iTunes and then reopen it. I am also unable to tansfer these albums/songs onto my iPod. I'm not really sure when this started happening but I haven't purposely changed anything on my computer. I can get them back by clicking on File/Add to Library but then the next time I close/open iTunes they have gone again.
I have searched on this forum and found some similar problems with people who have Vaio computers and have followed all the suggestions e.g. deleting Vaio media programmes, chaging Vaio services to manual in Task Manager and unistalling/reinstalling iTunes. None of this has made any difference (and I haven't had this problem the whole time I have had this computer).
Looking at the albums/songs in Windows explorer I have noticed a difference between the ones that don't vanish and the ones that do. If I right click on a song or album in the iTunes folder (which is on a NAS drive) and look at Security tab the the ones that don't disappear have different 'group or user names'. The ones that don't disappear have ' Everyone', 'Unix User\nobody' and 'Unix Group\nogroup' whilst the ones that do disappear have 'Everyone', 'Unix Group\users' and 'NAS-02-8A-5B\MyName'. Why is this? Does it matter? All of these group/user names have special permission and on closer inspection this means they can do everything.
One thing I can think of that has changed in the recent past is that I have a Roberts Stream 83i attached to the wireless network and this accessess my iTunes songs. Would this have an effect?
Please help. I don't know what to do now....
    Thanks in advance.

Well, after literally hours of messing around with various things on my computer I have finally managed to sort it out and I thought I would post my findings here in case anyone else encounters the same problem.
First I updated the firmware on my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo to version 7. This solved the problem of encountering error messages every time I tried to import a CD - I was only able to download one song at a time. I'm not sure if this was related to the permissions problem or not.
Next I went to ReadyNAS Frontview and changed a setting in the Share Listing section to "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems".
This seems to have fixed everything. Not being very computer literate I'm not sure why so if anyone could enlighten me that would be great!

  • Disappearing Song Names

I've painstakingly added all track names to each song in my library. Now, many show up blank, but when they play the song name appears. No other information has disappeared. anyone have any suggestions to remedy this?

You can try Advanced/Convert Tags, even if you just convert them to the same version. However, if you check with get info on a track and see in summary there is a tag on it then it has a tag. You can then look through the other tabs to see what information is on the tag.
I have a few tunes that come from a roundabout source that do not have tags, and when I use convert tags it does not add any, and when I edit in information in the tag editor it adds information to the iTunes database but still does not create a tag.
As I said before, some information is not stored in the tags but in the iTunes database and will not transfer unless you transfer the whole database (and I have no experience with that and am not sure if it is even possible PC/Mac)

  • Disappearing songs in iCloud

After I authorized my Mac to iCloud, all of my songs through my account were available by clicking on the cloud next to them. I was just selecting songs as I listened to them so I wouldnt take up too much bandwidth while transferring them. Well, now all the songs have disappeared that I didn't immediately download by clicking on the "cloud" next to them. When i go to purchased, only the ones I selected manually are there, but the remainder of my library on other devices are nowere to be found. I would like to get them back to my Mac. Any ideas? (I have everything enabled on all devices, and have tried a lot of stuff) Thanks guys & gals!

Re: Exceeded 25.000 limit - now I cannot use match anymore - how should I delete songs now?     Aug 23, 2013 5:14 AM    (in response to Michael Allbritton)
This thread didn´t helped - but I found a solution on my own.
    1. Start Itunes while holding the ALT Key.
    2. Create a new Itunes lib
    3. in the empty lib - activate Itunes Match
    4. Now you see all your itunes match songs and you can delete them
    5. then restart itunes with ALT key and link to you original library
    DONE :-)
SO glad I found this solution! 25000 songs coming back to daddy!!

  • Exclamation point next to songs in iTunes & disappearing songs =[

after downloading songs from iTunes, & uploading music from CDs, time will go by before an exclamation point symbol shows up on the left side in my library.
once this symbol appears next to a song, i cant play it in iTunes. but i can still play it in my iPod =/ when i do try to play it, a box will pop up asking me "if i want to locate the file?" when i try, i cant find the file.
now here comes the best part: not all but only certain songs with the exclamation point disappear from my iPod, but they're still in iTunes!
if someone knows how to fix this, id greatly appreciate the help!!!

  • Help disappearing song on iTunes!!!

Help! I brought a song on my iPod and the song downloaded fine but a week later the song was gone plz help!

Nobody replied here, but I found the answer from slapphappe, so I wanted to post it here in case anyone else has had this question:
    http://slapphappe.wordpress.com/2008/11/11/how-to-recover-an-itunes-playlist/
The gist of it is to create a new on-the-go playlist on your iPhone, then select the entire playlist that was deleted on Itunes (but still resides on your iPhone) so that you re-create that playlist.
Hope this helps someone else. I'm very grateful to slapphappe for posting that and to have recovered my playlist!

  • Disappearing Songs and Artists

I recently restored my computer to factory settings (a few weeks ago, I guess) and had no problems adding my music back in using my external hard drive. Things were fine. Today I opened up iTunes and noticed that some songs I had added in recently were missing. I thought it was weird, so I just added them back in normally. Upon further inspection, a lot of my songs were missing. They were just totally missing, there wasn't the usual little ! and the title of the song and stuff that's usually there if a songs moved / iTunes can't find it. So I tried adding them back...but nothing happened. I tried every way I could think of and nothing was added back in.
It seems like any artist that has more than a few songs has been mostly taken out. Take Coldplay for instance, I own every one of their CD's plus a bunch of live stuff and it's all supposed to be in there...yet only one song shows up. With Weezer, only about four show up - and I own all of their stuff too!
How do I fix this? I want my music back!

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.

  • Can I recover disappeared songs from iPod before I reformat?

Hi, I have a 20GB Clickwheel iPod (black and white screen), Mac-formatted, and the computer I primarily use it with is an iBook running iTunes 4.8.
Sometime on Saturday my iPod started acting funny, first giving me the dreaded exclamation point/folder, then working but randomly skipping (and not playing songs). Finally, after I did a force-reset (menu+select), the iPod now says it has "0" (zero) songs on it, despite the fact that it also says 18.4 of the 18.6 GB are used up.
Making matters worse, when I connect the iPod to my computer, it says that the Mac doesn't recognize the drive plugged in, giving me the option to ignore, initialize or eject. The iPod does not show up on my desktop, in iTunes or in Finder. It does, however, appear in Disk Utility. This happens regardless of whether I plug the iPod in through regular or disk mode. I downloaded the latest iPod software update, and if I choose open it, it does seem like it will allow me to do a "reformat", but the "update" option is grayed out.
Therefore, here's my question: Is there any way I can save the mp3s on my iPod before (or without) doing a reformatting? This problem happened to me years ago on my old 10GB PC-formatted iPod and I was just able to plug it in and pull the files out of the hidden folders. Now, I can't seem to do this (or don't know how on this Mac). I read something on one of these posts about using the program terminal, which gave instructions to get ALL the mp3s off a crashed iPod, but I haven't tried that because the final complication is that the iBook I'd be moving them to only has 5gb free, so I need to move them a few pieces at a time.
Can anyone help me here??? I'm using all the patience and will i can possibly muster to withhold doing the reformat until i'm certain i won't be able to save these mp3s.
    Thanks so much!!!
    -Ben

Hey man, I'm in the same hole. I hope to get to the local Apple Store today. Will post if I get an answer. Hope you figure it out, and if so, please pass the knowledge.

  • I've got the Ghost Music bug/disappearing songs/vanishing content - every time I sync.

    Yeah, I've got this bug.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3909940
Everytime I stupidly plug my phone in, (it's happened three straight times in the past two weeks, you'd think I'd learn by now), it seems to sync fine, until it gets to step 6 - Waiting for Changes to apply - and then never finishes.
Once iTunes just eventually crashed after half an hour, once I let it keep going for an hour hoping it would eventually go, but no dice. Then, off course, all the music/non-app content on my phone thinks it is there, but it doesn't play.
And unlike the lucky (and extremely kind) helper from the original thread(s), mine isn't solved by JUST renaming the MediaLibrary.sqlitedb file and doing a soft reset. Then iTunes just gets stuck on Step 6 again. I've had to full restore my phone each of the past three times.
I'm at wits end with this. I might just never plug my phone into iTunes again until something in iTunes gets unbugged.
Anyone know of a longer term solution? Anyone have this problem and it never goes away?

I reinstalled it, and when I thought I was done, an error popped up claiming that I don't have sufficient privileges to start system services, so Apple Mobile Device failed to start. I tried to fix this, but the R6034 error keeps popping up EVERY time I try to install or even RUN iTunes.
Doublechecking. Have you worked through the following user tip?

  • Problem with my iPod updating

I hope this is a "How to Use" problem. I can't seem to update my iPod like I usually do. I'm getting relaly frustrated.
    heres what I normally do:
Right click and open a song.
it is now in my library.
Open all the new songs I want to update.
    Update iPod.
    Done.
now, when I have my library of songs, and go to update my iPod as usual, it just says "updating iPod, do not disconnect" as usual, but it only take a few seconds and says it is complete, ok to disconnect. What the? No more updating song # x of XX amount? And my list of songs on "defaults iPod" is empty, while I'm using 1.2 mb, 1.82 gb free?
Up until now the iPod has been pretty handy, except for the scratches (I treat it nice)
Now I'm beginning to see what a joke it is. Creative zen micro looks good I think?
    Help please.

    Hi,
Is your library always full or do u manually load all your music to itunes and then delete? Because your problem sounds to me like you delete all your library songs after you upload your ipod.
    From next time do this:
    1.Go To iTunes
    2.Click your library
    3.click "file"
4.scroll down and click add file to library
5.select all the songs you want to download
    6.and then click open
If you do that i dont think you will have any problem of disappearing songs.
If u like me dont forget to vote for me (lol)
Good to hear u treat your iPod Nano nice
If you are so arrogant i think creative zen is good for you
    Good Luck With The Nano,

  • Ipod touch will no longer sync my songs, they show up for a few seconds then disappear help

for some reason when I try to sync my songs to my ipod touch, they will all show up briefly, then disappear once I hit the sync button?  very frustrating, have never had this problem in the past, any suggestions would be great

If you haven't tried it yet, I'd eliminate memory issues first.  Close all of the apps with the double tap on the home button method

    then restart the device.

  • My speaker doesn't work when I try to listen to music or open up a quick time file, however they seem to work perfectly when I listen to a voice memo (p.s. the volume slider disappears in a song page and even in the multi tasking bar)

Thanks for your solution, it wasn't quite what solved the problem but i remembered that i had a bit of salt water on my phone recently and spraying the charging port with an anti-oxide spray solved my problem, do you mind if i ask, how is the charging port related with the volume or/and speakers?

  • Songs disappear from playlist once in a while but are still in library

Every now and again I notice that a song has disappeared from a playlist. I can copy it back to the playlist from the music library. But what makes the song drop from the playlist? It's either a song I purchased from iTunes or one I imported from cd. Doesn't matter.

Not a Sony Vaio. I have one of the first iPods. It was a gift. It's not that songs disappear from the playlist in the iPod, but from playlists on the computer. They are in the music library and I have to copy and paste them back into the playlist I want them in. I haven't lost any from the music library, fortunately.
The playlists (I have a bunch of them) are blue with a music note. The songs in the playlists have checkmarks next to them, and are all checked. They just drop out of a playlist every now and again and I have to copy it back in. I can go for a while and think "hey, I haven't heard X in a long time". And sure enough it's dropped from the playlist in the computer, and I have to copy it back in from the library, then resynch the iPod. Really weird and mildly annoying.
