Disappearing Start Up Disk
I had successfully migrated from a G5 PPC to a new MacPro 8 Core, or so I thought.
The entire contents of the old machine's boot volume with all my settings was successfully mirrored onto the new boot drive BUT when I moved a second SATA drive from the old machine to the MacPro it doesn't see it as a potential start up drive. I used this second drive to dual boot in Tiger to run Avid MC3.0.1. Is this an issue with Leopard and how do I get the second drive to appear as a bootable volume? Thanks for any suggestions. Otherwise the new Mac is awesome.

Thanks for getting back so quickly Niel, luckily I have just purchased a new stand alone Avid version MC3.5 so that should run on OSX.5 and higher. No need for Tiger. But two new problems have appeared...
Firstly a pair of 1Tb SATA drives I used to run in an external SATA enclosure and had been partitioned under OSX.5.4 and which I mounted in the extra drive bays of the MPro now only appear as unformated volumes. When I tried repartioning one of them (they're full of music and Quicktime media) it now mounts but appears empty... I don't want to risk wiping the other one at this point...
The other problem is that the install disk with the machine is 10.5.1 but any attempt to update to the 10.5.7 Combo updater downloads but fails to verify and install. Any thoughts on that?

Removing my second start up disk

I have two disks on my Macpro, and I have an old Lion (10.7) start up disk installed on the second hard drive that I'd like to remove. Anyone able to break down the steps to remove it?The best thing to do that is to erase the disk (if it's this what you want). Open Disk Utility, select that Lion partition on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk. Finally, that startup disk will disappear.
If you want to mean that your Mac is starting on that partition and you want to start by default on another one, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose another partition -
Premiere Pro CC - start up disk shrinks to nothing and have to close program.
When working on a project on an external hard drive, why does my start up disk, my desktop storage memory, shrink to almost nothing until I close the Premiere Pro CC? It has consistently been doing this. All scratch disks are set to the external hard drive. Are there preview and render files that are temporarily being stored on my desktop that I don't know about? I start out with 30gigs and 5 hours later I'm down to 8gigs. And then…And 3….And…You get the picture.

Are you saying that you only have 30 gigabytes of space on your OS/Applications disk drive or is the about the RAM usage?
Yes, there are files written on your OS/Applications drive, On my Windows 8 laptop this is the location
C:\Users\YOURpcNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\Media Cache Files. These are not temporary files though and should not disappear with a reboot, but they can be deleted to make more room. -

How can I delete files from it?The startup disk is the internal SSD in your MBA. You may delete files by draging the file to Trash (or clicking on them and then execute COMMAND+Delete). Then empty Trash.

How to delete files from start up disk
Please help. After my macbook air is on for 2-5 mins, it comes up with I need to delete files from my start up disk. I went into start up disk and the only thing in there is the OS X system. So, then a small box appears. and tells me my memory is full and that I need to force quit applications. Sometimes the only application that is on it is finder. At this point the macbook air then freezes and I have to turn it off holding the button down. When I go to turn it back on it will often not turn back on. This laptop is only 11months old and running the new OS X system (mountain Lion) that just came out.

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB. lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive? I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents" I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

Please help - I am not too computer savvi and my computer keeps telling me my start up disk is full. I have purchased a passport and transferred loads of images and files onto that and then deleted them from my computer but the message is still the same and I can't download anything.
How big is your hard drive, and how much space is used/free?
To find out, click once on the hard drive icon on your desktop to highlight it (it will be called Macintosh HD unless you renamed it). Click the command and I keys on your keyboard to open the information window. In "General", you will see Capacity and Available. What are those figures?
If you have a little bit of space left, I recommend that you install Omnidisksweeper (it's free) to tell you what folders are using up the most room.
Be careful when you transfer files - only move files that you know are yours. Don't move or delete any system files unless you're specifically recommended to do so (some files are safe to delete; some are not).

I am having problems gettting my mail to work ... Mac telling me that my start up disk id full and to delete some files to free up space ... have done this but when i open mail from the dock it just brings up the colour wheel and nothing happening ... it shows when you right click on the mail icon that " application not responding"
If your hard drive is getting full, you need to free up, at least, 20 GBs of space on your iMac's hard drive.
If your Mac is running a fairly recent version of OS X, here are some general guidelines.

I deleted files from my MacBook Air after it said my start up disk was almost full. It did several xs, then the color wheel wouldn't stop spinning, so I closed it. Then after a sufficient amount of time, I tried to start it up again, only now the Apple start up wheel just spins non stop and nothing else happens. How or what can I do to get my MacBook Air to work again, without having to take it in? Thanks so much!

I have a Intel duo Imac. Everything has been running relatively smoothly for a few years now. All of a sudden my computer will not start. I get the flashing folder with a question mark.
When I go to Start up disk in my system perfernces while the computer is on. I see 2 possible choices. One is my hard drive with the operating system shown. The other is a non-existant Network Start up disk with a question mark in it ( looks like a hard drive with a question mark and it say's its a "network start up disk).
All I think I want to do is get rid of the Network startup with the question mark. I can not find anywhere how one can just remove an old or non existant start up disk without reformatting.
I believe this came from a clients hard drive who had a network system on it. We no longer have that drive. It no longer exists. But a latent icon shows up in start up disk.
When I go to change the start up disk. I can change it to either the hard drive or the network with the question mark. But when I select my hard drive and then got to restart the computer. I get the flashing folder with a question mark on start up. I have also seen the flashing globe a couple times.
When I attempt to run disk utility from may install disk ( holding down "C" on start-up ). Disk utility does not see my hard drive. Just the Apple install disk with the disk utility on it.
What can I do to remedy this short of re-installing? Will a program like Disk Warrior or Tech Tool help?Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know? It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks. -
How do I use a firewire drive as my start up disk?
I have a 12" powerbook that I am trying to use with an external firewire drive as my start up disk. aI install 10.5 easyily but then when I try to start up from that drive it will not recognize the drive as a Start up disk. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong.
First, what Disk Utility tells you is correct, that SMART indicators aren't supported on an external drive. Nothing is wrong.
I might try this approach .... get SuperDuper at http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html, download it to your internal hard drive, then use it to copy your internal drive to your external drive. Make sure the option to make the external drive bootable is checked. When that's done, reboot holding the option key down, and choose the external drive to boot from. That should work with the firewire connection. -

The backups aren't, but when you restore them, the result is bootable.
And, effective with 10.7.2, if you back up to a directly-connected external HD, Time Machine copies the Recovery HD to the Time Machine drive, so you can start up from it if your internal dies.

I bought mountain lion for my macbook pro and I'm trying to install it and it says there was an error and I need to boot up but I don't have any other start up disks to boot up with. Are there any suggestions of how I could get my computer started?
Hold the Option key down and restart. Select one of the drives that comes up and hit the Return key.

How can I create a start up disk for a old intel core duo running 10.5.8.. Computer works fine, but can't find install disk. Want to use internal disk drive or USD flash drive.
Try calling 1-800-676-2775. Give the serial number and thy *may* still burn you new install disks designed just for the hrdware in your system (for a fee, something like $160 per disk). *May* is only because they may not burn disks for Leopard anymore.
If they do not burn them for you, you can buy Leopard disks off Amazon or eBay for about $200.
Have you considered Snow Leopard?. Those disks only cost $19 (single user) or $29 (5-user license) through Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE. -
When I bought my Mac Air OSX Version 10.9.2 my daughter helped me migrate the contents of my previous macbook. But in the process seems to have duplicated the iTunes library - How do I get rid of one. The start up disk is almost full and plus it doesn't synch properly with my iPhone 4S. Please help!
Hello nicky:
You should run repair disk from your software install DVD before you try anything else. The crash may have damaged some of your directories - and a possible cause of the "missing/not missing" tunes.
