Disappearing Stills in iMovie 11

I am putting together a simple slide show comprised of still photos set to music.  I have successfully added dozens of photos, added transitions and Ken Burns effects.....and it all plays fine.  But I have run into an odd and unpredictable problem with three consecutive photos I have added to the project editor.  Even though I can see the thumbnails in the project, the picture that comes up when I highlight these thumbnails in the project editor is the last photo just before the sequence.  When I play the project, it simply holds this preceding photo for the duration of the three photo sequence.  It's as if these three photos don't exist.
I have tried many, many different things.  Closing, reopening the program. Cutting these photos and re-adding them......including in different places.  In all cases, the thumbnails are accurate in the project editor but simply do not appear or play.  I have doublechecked to see that these photos are real files and not just thumbnails and this is the case.
Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

One trick that sometimes works is to open the photo (or photos) in Preview, then Save As a jpeg (rename as well). They may already be jpegs of course, but re-saving in Preview may allow iMovie to work with them properly.
I've experienced issues on a couple of occasions where the images had been produced by a 3rd party program (such as one that came with printer software) and were formatted as jpeg. Re-saving in Preview fixed the problem.

  • How to update stills in iMovie?

    Hi!
I finished my video in iMovie'09 based on still photographs.
After reviewing the results, I decided to retouch some of the photographs.
I opened iMovie, right clicked each photo, selected "Reveal in Finder" and updated the photo using Photoshop.
However, iMovie is not updating the photos after I change them.
If I select a photo in iMovie and click the "Reveal in finder", in Finder I see it changed, but not in iMovie. I even tried to export the movie to see if it would use the updated stills, but it did not.
How can I update my movie without having to recreate the entire sequence or change each photo individually?
    Thanks in advance

I did some research into this and I don't have good news for you. When you create a new project in iMovie it creates a project file inside the Movies/iMovie Projects folder inside your home directory. This project file is actually a package file which you can look into if you right-click it and choose Show Package Contents.
What I found is that when you add a photo to your project, iMovie creates a QuickTime movie file inside this package and adds the photo to it. It then refers to this QuickTime movie from then on. I tried deleting this QuickTime movie from the package to see if iMovie would recreate it from the original photo files. But it doesn't. In fact in my test project of 4 photos, the whole project disappeared from the iMovie Project list after I deleted the QuickTime movie file and then restarted iMovie.
There doesn't seem to be a way to do what you want but I'm ready to be corrected.

  • How do you set the duration for multiple stills in iMovie 2013?

How do you set the duration for multiple stills in iMovie 2013?
Before upgrading to the latest version of iMovie last month, I was able to set the duation of all of the stills included in an iMovie project at one time by clicking the apply to all still box in the adjustment pop up. That option is no longer apparent. If it is available I cannot find it, and I have tried several different ways to accomplish it. I have tried the iMovie help section and can find nothing to help.
Apple, do I really have to adjust close to 500 pictures to a 5 second duration individually???
    REALLY??!!

...why wouldnt people want that level of accuracy when animating, especially when working to music at a specific duration?
Because often people are animating to words or beats in the music.  Music is rarely performed with a computer-precise beat and tempo.  Musicians aren't robots: they swing the beat sometimes.  They use rubato.  They change tempo.  They change time signatures.  As a result, you have to FIND those words and beats.  It's not a situation where you can say, "There!  I've found the duration of one beat!  Now it's easy to find the rest of them!"
If you try it, you will be very disappointed.
Try finding the precise end of a piece of music that fades or ends on a big chord with a ring-out.  You'll see that it's trial-and-error: what's the point where it becomes inaudible?  It depends on how high your speakers are turned up.  You might have them way up, you set an end point for the layer, and then you do a RAM Preview at a more reasonable volume.  You might say, "Hey!  The music ends before the layer ends!"...  but you KNOW you set the layer's out point when the audio file goes silent.
AE has layer markers that can be used on an audio layer to mark beats, words, etc. They come in very handy.
I guess it comes down to this: because AE can do so much different stuff, there are very few automated procedures.  Oh, Adobe tries with effects that convert audio levels to keyframes, but they're not 100% reliable... especially on something like a capella choral works.  For true accuracy, you need  find the timings yourself.
If you want something simpler, try a different application. But be prepared for lower level of accuracy.

  • How to extract a still from iMovie to create a jpg

I'm trying to extract a still from iMovie to create a jpg. I've been able to make a freeze frame, but now I want to export it into iPhoto as a jpg? How?

I suggest that you use a free app called MPEG Streamclip.

  • Displaying Photo Titles and Descriptions in stills in iMovie

Hello, I'm wondering if it's possible to get still photo titles and descriptions from iPhoto to display on Stills inserted into iMovie. I am trying to create slideshows of stills and iMovie is the only system that allows you to modify soundtracks, but it, as far as I can tell, won't display Titles or Descriptions. iPhoto and iDVD slideshows display this info, but you have no control or can't even see what audio files you have inserted.
    Please help!!
    Thanks

I'm wondering if it's possible to get still photo titles and descriptions from iPhoto to display on Stills inserted into iMovie.
I assume you are referrimg to an automatic method of displaying this information and AFAIK there is no such feature currently programmed into iMovie '08. You can, of course manually title each slide.

  • Increasing size of stills in Imovie

I brought stills into imovie but they appear the size of thumbnails, how do I resize to fit screen?

welcome landerdm to the  boards of discussions...
a few things for your future projects:
iM is a DV-editor.. imports lossless from miniDV devices, by using the same video codec 'dv' ...
    1h dv = 13GB
stills in iM get converted into 'video' (='dv') ... so, no wonder, a tiny 50kB jpg gets a few MB when in use for 30secs in a video...
    last word:
a videoDVD uses a different codec (mp2), ... the encoding takes place in iDVD, automatically.. for your convenience, you simply have to stay under 120 MINUTES (length matters, not size).. even a 60gig iM project (=lots of imports...), fits onto a 4.7 GB disk..
    savvy?

  • How do I move all my movies onto an external hard drive and still run imovie

My Mac hard drive is full due to 300GB's of movies. I don't want to lose the movies and still want to work on them/create projects etc.
I've bought an external hard drive so have copied and pasted all the movies across from MAC hard drive to external hard drive.
I want to delete the movies off the MAC hard drive but still ensure Imovie picks up the movies from the external hard drive (continuously plugged in).
Can anyone let me know how I can do this?
    Thanks

    Hi
In regard to some versions of iMovie - and to ALL Video workings on a Mac
All - iMovie - all versions, FinalCut, Adobe Premiere etc etc
External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - Else broken files and all kinds of trouble
and rather a FireWire or Thunderbolt connected ext. drive - as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up, and when I use HD-Material (for SD-Video quality it may work better - but to a severe quality loss)
    iMovie'08 and '09 and '11 ( Don't have iMovie'13 version 10.0.x)
DO not move or alter ANY video material - On DeskTop/Finder and in any folders named anything like
    iMovie Event's - or -
    iMovie Project's
If moved to e.g. another hard disk - the link back to iMovie app is broken - and this can be anything from HARD to IMPOSSIBLY to mend !
    BUT instead.
Connect new (hfs-formatted) ext hard disk
    Start iMovie
Move Event's and Project's - within the application
and now links to material is preserved - and space gained on the Start-Up (Macintosh HD) Hard Disk
    Yours Bengt W

  • Hi, is there any option how I can edit duration of multiple video clips (not stills) in iMovie 11, lets say if I want them 2 seconds long? Many thanks for any advice... Tom

    Yes.

  • Can I still buy iMovie '11 from the App Store? (I have an older iMac with Snow Leopard which cannot run the current version, iMovie 10).).

I am running Snow Leopard, and I bought a new camera (Canon Vixia HF R300). I am so far unable to download my movies into iMovie, and from what I have been able to ascertain, I need to upgrage to iMovie '11 to support the camera.
I have read that iMovie '11 was available at the Mac App Store, but now I see that the App Store has the new version, iMovie 10.0, which my Snow Leopard mac cannot support. Can I still get iMovie '11 from the App Store?

Apple has not made older versions of apps available in the MAS, only the most recent version. Apple constantly reminds folks that they alone are responcible for backing up their content purchases for the very reason that content may not always be available from the MAS in the future.
To answer your question, no, a license for a particular version of an Apple app does not entitle you to older versions of the app.

  • How do I take a still from iMovie and move it to desktop?

I right clicked in Event Browser and clicked on <add still frame to project>. Imovie created a stilland added it to end of Storyboard.
Now I want to use it elsewhere, particularly in iPhoto. The "iLife 11 Portable Genius" manual says to then right-click the picture's clip on the Storyboard, and choose the <reveal in finder> option. But that option does not come up.
I can't drag and drop the still from iMovie to the desktop.
    Woould appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Bob

  • Importing stills from iMovie '08 to iPhoto

I am trying to create a photo album. I have extracted still images from video footage of sporting events and put them into an iMovie project file. I want to export these from iMovie to iPhoto (or import them in the reverse direction) but I am unable to do this. iPhoto refuses to open the iMovie project file to allow me to import. I need to be able to extract still photos from video as all of the sporting events have been shot on an HD camcorder and not a still camera. I have even tried publishing the iMovie project to the media browser but I can't get iPhoto to recognize this either. Any suggestions?

Are you using iMovie 7? Control-click on the image and select Add Still Frame to Project. Then Control-click on the still frame and select Show in Finder. You'll be taken to the folder where the still jpg is located and can copy it to the desktop.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Any chance the first disk image was still mounted on your desktop when you put its .img file into the trash?
Thanks! I think you nailed it!
I had tried playing from the disk image with DVD player first and it played fine, but then I decided to do more edits so I trashed the .img file. I forgot that I had mounted it. When I tried to burn the second disk image, Disk Utility must have still used the first image, even though it had been trashed, because it was still mounted.
However, the icon showing when something is mounted was not there.....until after I had made the final image and then I could eject the mounted disk whose path on DU showed that the .img file was indeed in the trash.
Do you think that would have made its name change to 'disk 5' and would that have caused the burn to stop just 3min short of the end?

  • Low resolution on stills in imovie

I uploaded stills (high resolution) into iMovie, but the short movie (made with the stills) has a very bad resolution (the colors are unsaturated, grainy, etc) and it's worst when I export it in You Tube or Quick Time.
    Please help

You can not "override" it - you can ignore it and order - Apple will not stand behind the quality of low resolution photos

  • Can't capture still in imovie 09

IMovie 09, OSX 10.6.8. I'm about to tear my hair out. I've been searching the net for an answer for over an hour. I'm trying to freeze the final frame of my video for about 5 seconds past the end. I tried to make a still out of the final frame to manipulate as an image, but putting the playhead at the final frame then using Ctrl-Click does not bring up the option to freeze the frame or add frame to project or capture still - nothing. Ctrl-Click only gives me options to play the clip, play from the beginning, play full screen, etc.
Thanks in advance. If you help me out, I'll make you brownies.

    Need some brownies...
You can always make a freeze frame the way you did it. Sometimes, you may need to make a still frame out of your video that you can use in iPhoto etc.
Here is a link for how to do that. (Note:this works for imovie 09 as well as iMovie 11)

  • I want no movement on stills in imovie 9

Sorry if this is blindingly simple, I want to make a movie mainly of stills. When I import them from iphoto the stills play with an automatic pan and tilt movement. I'd like to have no automatic movement, adding my own when necessary. Can anyone help, ta Frank

This is called the Ken Burns Effect. You can change this for individual pictures using the Crop,Rotate,Ken Burns Tool.
You can set the default action for how imovie handles new photos added to the project by going to FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES. Set initial photo placement to FIT (which will letterbox if necessary) or CROP which will cut off the sides to make the aspect ratio fit your project, if necessary, rather than choosing Ken Burns.
