Disappearing, then reappearing preference files

This is the second time I've had this problem.
I began to notice the dock freeze alot as it was trying to show/hide. This got worse and worse until it was starting to interfere with my computer work.
I happened to look in my preference folder and I found several files being displaced and then moved back.
Last time this happened, I trashed my entire pref file... and suspecting perhaps a widget (these are the only things I've downloaded in a long time).... I turned off everything except the original apple widgets.
I repaired my permissions and then restarted and checked- no odd behaviour- so, I figured I had fixed the problem.
Now, many weeks later, it's happening again.
Back to the pref/ file- this time there's actually 3 or 4 different files disappearing, then reappearing.
They vanish so quickly that I can't catch them to throw them away or read their names.... actually, I did catch one once and it was named something like c#fx66fy...
Can anyone tell me if they've experienced this? Is it normal? Is it caused by widgets?
No one uses my computer but me and I do not download files/photos/music or movies. I do download widgets.... but I don't keep them all.
Please Help.

Hi I have had this problem, unfortunatly The fix that was posted is no longer in my archive. I think that it was Dr Smoke who solved the problem. You could try his pages.
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/finder.html.
Sorry I can't help further. I have never tested it but I think that it happened when i booted from a clone of my os on a external drive.

  • Menu Bar Icons Appear...then Disappear, then Reappear

I can't find this problem anywhere else on the internet being addressed. I have a MacBook Pro 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. Ever since I did a clean install of Leopard I have this weird problem. In the upper right corner where the Finder, Battery, Volume, Wireless, Date/Time and Stacks Icons are located, they will appear, then disappear, then reappear constantly. Ive tried restarting, Ive even gone into the System Preference to choose the Time/Date option. When I click display time in Menu Bar it will let me select it, then when the icons disappear that option goes away in sync. Very strange, has anyone else had this problem and have a cure for it?

I'm having the exact same problem and I know what's causing it but I don't have a solution to fix it. It is happening for me due to my Firewire CD/DVD drive. It's just a regular Sony drive that never had any problems with 10.4. Now though when DVD is mounted it starts up the menu bar issues. When I eject the DVD the menu bar goes back to acting normal.
I did a google search and found another thread on the macfixit forums. One guy found a solution to fix his problem with it and that was to trash these two preference files in your home/Library. One was com.apple.finder.plist and I can't remember the other one. I tried it but it doesn't work for me since it seems to be my firewire DVD drive that's causing the issues.
Do you have an external Firewire device connected? If so try disconnecting it and see if that fixes your problem. I sure hope apple fixes this issue soon.

  • Results completely disappear, then reappear, then disappear, then reappear.

I am so frustrated with Spotlight.
When I search my computer using Spotlight, Spotlight will bring up results, and before I can click on file, the results completely disappear, then reappear, then disappear, then reappear.
    Is this normal?
Is there something I need to do to stop this?
    Thanks
    Kim

    Greetings.
Kim could solve this problem in another thread as a side effect of fixing a related problem that affected searching in Mail, and has asked me to post the solution here. I don’t frequent this forum, but I’m pretty sure the solution is well known here, maybe just not that it could have a bearing on the weird behavior Kim was observing.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command, and press <Return> (you can copy the command here and paste it in Terminal):
    sudo mdutil -E -i on /
The -E option tells Spotlight to delete any already existing index data (so that it’s rebuilt from scratch all over again). The -i on option ensures that indexing is enabled. Finally, the ‘/’ at the end means "apply this command to the startup disk".
After entering the previous command in Terminal, you’ll be prompted for your administrator password. Just type it blindly (you won’t see any feedback of the keystrokes while you type it) and then press <Return>.
For best results, quit Mail and don’t play too much with your disk while Spotlight does its job -- i.e. avoid files being created/modified/deleted, mail being downloaded, etc.

I have a Iphone 3g,every now and then some of my music will disappear then reappear.I've tried to sync the music from my library on my laptop, nothing happens. How do I get my music back, without having to wait for it to reappear?

Define "I cannot transfer songs."  What exactly did you do, and what exactly happened?
Did you authorized iTunes on your computer and sign into the same iTunes account as your phone (and the one the music was purchased under)?

  • Google calendar periodically disappears, then reappears

Since upgrading my iPhone 4S to IOS 6, I have a particular Google calendar whose items will disappear from my calendar (built-in calendar app).  I'm never sure what I've done to make them reappear but, up until now, they always have.
(Actually, I just added an event to this calendar, from the phone, then waited for a "resync" and, though it took a while, I eventually got the calendar to display, again.)
The really weird thing is that other calendars attached to this particular Google account show up just fine.  And other google accounts that I have set up to display calendars work fine always - they don't ever disappear.
Again, just since IOS 6, has this happened!  Anyone else experiencing this, or know how to permanently resolve it?

This keeps happening to my phone since I upgraded to IOS 6 also.
Here's how I get the calendar to reappear...
--> Go to your Calendar on your phone
--> In upper-left corner, tap "Calendars"
--> You will see all your subscribed calendars listed. Your Google calendar should be there WITHOUT a dot next to it
--> Tap next to your Google calendar to make the dot reappear
Boom, all your items should now be back.
It keeps happening over and over again, though.  It would be great if there was some sort of permanent solution to this issue.

  • Why are my bookmarks disappearing then reappearing hours to days later?

I have an iPhone 4S. After updating to iOS 6.0.1, my Safari bookmarks disappeared. They reappeared, but they continue to disappear. They'll comeback at random times - sometime hours, sometimes days later. Anyone experience this and/or know the solution? Thanks!

    Interesting never noticed that before.
The pins on the images in the film strip are toggled on and off by the menu item Show Place badges, under the gear,
Why that is toggled on when you select an image, view it and drop back to film strip mode is unknown.  Doesn't seem to be a use for it. If the badges are a problem you can toggle them off by going to this menu. If you need them on before going to view mode you can toggle them on here.
You could report this to Apple Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback as a bug.

  • Contact information disappearing then reappearing

This morning the info for 2 people who I txt w regularly disappeared from my contact list.  Their names, addresses, emails were wiped.  All I saw in the from line in my txt messages were their telephone #s and not their names.  I checked the contact list for them and their records were gone.  A minute later everything magically reappeared.  Has this happened to anyone?

This can happen when contacts being synced with an external source (Yahoo contacts, Google Contacts) are unavailable (no data connection or the service goes down).  Similarly, Notes may be unavailable or calendars.

  • Configuration Profiles Disappear then Reappear on Managed Devices

Running OS X 10.9.1 and Server 3.0.1 and using Profile Manager extensively.  I am noticing on a regular basis that my MDM configuration profiles on both iOS and OS X devices frequenty disapear from my device/devices and then reapear eventhough I have done nothing in profile manager.  It is asthough PM pulls the profiles and then pushes them again.  This issue is happening on multiple servers I administer and on sev ers that were a fresh install and upgraded from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and Server 2.2.2.
Anyone else having this issue?  Any solution to speak of?
I have reported this as a bug to Apple (Bug ID: 15699250) but true to fasion Apple has only asked for my Profile Manager logs and are now silent on the issue.  All these bugs with Profile manager have renedered it useless to me and can not upgrade any of my clients until Apple does something to fix it.  Profile Manager on Mountain Lion was far more useable than current release.  Are others having the same experience?
    Thank you.

this was caused by the cert or the way it was exported.. not sure which.

  • How do I find the "Preferences" file within Elements 10 to fix the runtime error?  I can't find it any where

I am trying to fix the runtime error that occurs when I open the Photoshop Elements 10 editor and shuts down the program.  I am using the instructions found on the abode website here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-c-runtime-errors-products.html
There are no good instructions telling me what the Preferences file is named or how to find it. If someone could help that would be great.

If you are using Windows 7 then the preference file that needs to be renamed is at this location:
    <C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0\Editor>
In the above path, replace USERNAME with your windows profile name  which could be something like jblogetc or whatever.  Also the preference file is called: Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Prefs.psp and this needs to be renamed to Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Prefs.old
Once this done, restart PSE 10 and then see if it works.

  • Mysterious cfx# preference files (binary plists), Take 2

The other topic on this matter was closed with no resolution.
I seem to recall the files were initially invisible on my system and now are not. More disturbingly they seem to have an enormous amount random data elements in them ranging from email addresses to images. None of data is from any single application. Very suspicious of some kind of key logger or other spyware based upon the key data found in these files (serial numbers of some of my software, email addresses, subjects, photos, full names of database fields from FileMaker Pro, each individually stored in a very structured manner)
I have archived the files off for more analysis. If anyone sees these types of files and wants to see the contents in a structured manner (aka decode the binary plist), download TextWrangler or Apple's property list editor and open with either. I would recommend TextWranger as it is easier to view and search large binary plists (aka resource fork 2.0 LOL)
As a second measure of analysis, I have added a Finder "Folder Action" to alert me when a new file is added to my preferences folder. When another shows up, I should have an idea of what created it I hope. The problem is that there is so much garbage running behind the scenes in Mac OS X (as opposed to Mac OS 9) that unraveling this could be a nightmare.

    I found this:
    http://tinyurl.com/cfx-mkstemp
Which indicates which UNIX command may be generating these. By most accounts these are generated when a preference file is re-written. The original preference file is left on disk, the new one is created with a bogus name of cfx# + number translated to character form (longint to char). Then the preference file which is being written is discarded and the new file is renamed to take its place.
This very likely is being done by the OS (a Cocoa call). As we see more and more of these collect, it likely means that something is having a serious issue writing its preference file. On the other hand any application can call mkstemp() to create such a randomized named file which will not overlap with any other file. Very handy and also means that a rogue app wishing to insure that it can write to a directory would correctly assume the user, regardless of their rank (admin, managed, guest) has the ability to write to the preferences folder. Just a thought. I personally don't like what I see in the ones I captured. Looks like digital-dumpster-diving to me. It *seems* to contain various snippets of data from multiple applications in my captured files... That is not a legitimate behavior of the preference writing system of the OS.
Oddly enough, when I deleted the files, they stopped being left behind. The folder action AppleScript :
    "/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts/add - new item alert.scpt"
alerts me frequently that a new items is in the folder but then when I tell it "Yes" to see it, the script opens the Preferences folder and selects nothing. I suspect this is the cfx# file being created, being detected, then the swap happens and the script cannot find the cfx# file.
So, I am going to modify the add - new item alert.scpt script to display the name of the files in the dialog (silly it doesn't) and re-attach the script to see if they are indeed the cfx# files.
If the OS is indeed doing this by virtue of NSPreferences/NSMutableDictionary (Cocoa calls), then Apple would be nice to have in the application path for the application that made the call in the plist... a trackback?
    More later.

This is what fixed it for me.  It is related to icloud settings being set to remove items from the phone, they are still in the cloud but not visible until you set them on again.  This is all asuming that you are syncronizing to the cloud.

  • Restoring preference files in FCP 7.03

I trashed my preference files in FCP (com.apple.finalcutpro.plist and under Final cut Pro User Data: FCP 7.0 prefs, FCP Pro Obj Cache and FCP Prof Cache)
I emptied my trash. I then repaired permissions, restarted, and relaunched FCP.
But.......com.apple.finalcutpro.plist did not reappear. The Pro User Data did reappear. And FCP doesn't recognize my video deck.
I read the Digital Rebellion info. Is that the best route to go, that is, will it locate a trashed preference final? Or are we talking about some other procedure?
My reason for doing all the above was to delete previous project files and to get ready for a new FCP project with a clean slate.
I'm feeling vexed because this is the first time I encountered this situation. And I'd like some step by step guidance, anyone?

    1. The plist doesn't appear until you do something in the applicaton that changes the window arrangement or the state of the application. Otherwise there is no plist. As Jon said it's a very minor part of the preferences.
    2. DV NTSC is the default. If you leave the default preset the application is looking for a DV device.
So this has nothing to do with plists or prefs but that you can't capture. So let's start ate the beginning:
Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime you are using.
