Disappearing thumbnails?

I've always had Event View preferences in iPhoto '08 set to 'Show Event Photos' when an event was doubleclicked. However, I've just tried to do this for an event, only for the display to go straight to the single photo in the event that was showing at the time; and not only do no thumbnails appear, but the individual larger photos can't be dragged into any albums - the only option I have is to click & drag that entire event. Is there some preference that's automatically reset itself, or do I need a bug fix...?

Two possibilities:
There's a slider on the lower right of the iPhoto Window - drag it to the left.
or
Re-Select that preference in the iPhoto Preferences. If it won't select then try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file? For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
As iPhoto 08 has been superseded by 09 I would hold out no hope for "bigfix".

  • Disappearing Thumbnails & Waveforms - How do I fix this!?

After about 20 minutes of editing with FCPX, the thumbnails and waveforms in the event browser and project timeline start to disappear, and it is INCREDIBLY frustrating. Does anyone know what is going on here? How do I go about fixing this?

I'm having the same problem as the poster above. It used to be that thumbnails and waveforms would disappear after importing media. So I would import, quit and relaunch, then edit. With each update, however, the problem has worsened, and it is now at the point where the software is almost unusable. As chacox says above, things are fine for 20 min or so, then thumbnails and waveforms start disappearing. Scroll left or right in the timeline, or up and down in the browser, and all you'll see are blank tiles. Return to what you were just looking at, and it's now blank as well.
    Things I've tried:
Tweaked the energy settings in System Preferences to try to prevent the computer from sleeping.
Installed Event Manager X to restrict events and projects to just the current project.
Installed Preference Manager to trash preferences prior to each launch.
Each of these things seems to have bought me a couple of minutes before problems arise, but that's about it. Since everything initially works fine, it would seem to be a software problem where the computer "forgets" to redraw waveforms or reload thumbnails. Tweaking the thumbnail settings in the bottom right of the timeline sometimes helps, but only for the moment. I've done quite a bit of searching on this, and have so far failed to uncover a fix.
    My specifics:
iMac with 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 4 GB memory, 1333 MHz DDR3. OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)
FCPX 10.0.7 Video files are 1080i HD (1920 x 1080 / 29.97 fps) in AVCHD format output from a Canon camcorder.
I've held off updating to Mountain Lion because of legacy software issues, but this problem has arrived at the top of the list, so perhaps it's time to pull the trigger.

  • Disappearing thumbnails and smart albums

    Hi to you all,
I made a smart album of images that have missing faces data which works well. However, once I leave the smart album by selecting another project folder (that has images in it), I don't see any thumbnails in the browser view! The project has the total number of images in the folder but none are visible. I don't have any filters set either. The only way to view the thumbnails in a project is to restart AP. Seems it only happens when I select the smart album, add a few faces then click back to a project. Anyone had any issues like this? Can anyone replicate it? Thanks! Oh and I've repaired permissions, rebuilt the library

There seems to be a glitch with Stacks and Smart
Albums. If I base a smart album on a set of
parameters and the photo is not the select of a stack
it does not get selected for the smart album. For
example if I make a select based on a client then
choose later to make a 5 star rating out of the stack
that is not the select it will not appear in the 5
star library smart folder until I break the stack.
So I have to go back to the original stack and break
it to allow the search to work. Does anyone know
    how to fix this?
In the parameters for the smart album you need to check "Ignore Stack Groupings".
Be aware of an interesting issue you may run into later around this. If you drag a set of images out of a smart album that ignores groupings into a "normal" album that holds images, you will only see images that are also stack picks show up in the destination album. I have lobbied via feedback for Aperture to always make an image drug into an album from a smart album the "Album Pick" for that album to eliminate that exact problem.
Another odd behavior of smart albums you may find useful is that whatever level you define a smart album at is the level it always searches, no matter where you move it after. So you can make a top-level smart album doing a search across many folders and projects, and keep it neatly stored under a different top level folder where if you had tried to put the smart album to start with it would not see images.

  • Disappearing / Missing Thumbnails

Does anyone else suffer from disappearing thumbnails?
Viewing my photo stream there are loads of missing thumbs, but I can view the photo and after I do the thumbnail is back but not for long as when I go back in it's gone again, tried repair permissions (disk utility) and repair photos (cmb+opt on launch) with no luck.
I see the in the general 'photos' as well as photostream.

  • Thumbnail Cache Randomly Deleting and Recreating

I have a ton of photos on the computer and having to wait for the thumbnails to cache is a pain, in fact, the only pain so far with windows 7.  I'm just wondering if anybody else is having this problem where the thumbnail cache spontaneously deletes itself and then all the thumbnails have to cache again.  This happens at least once a day.  Is there something that I'm doing to cause this?  Any help is much appreciated.  Thank you

Like everyone else this has been driving me nuts, I've got literally zillions of images & videos that are god-awful to scan in Explorer without thumbnails, and most of those (RAW photos & videos) are ultra-slow to recreate.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/ThumbnailCache
      MaxCacheFileSize1024  (default: 5880 decimal)
      MaxCacheFileSize256  (default: 366 ")
      MaxCacheFileSize32  (default: 82 ")
      MaxCacheFileSize96  (default: 682 ")
I've upped each one by 10x (remember to restart Explorer), let's hope it works ...
Interesting, I do not even have this key? Can't believe Microsoft haven't fixed this yet, it must be a trivial thing to allow users to set their own max value. They are even passing off the problem as fixed when this 'fix' does not actually work! http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/82f82ef8-caf7-49d0-96a7-611ce87eeba2
I have simply given up on Windows Explorer to show photos now, Faststone Image Viewer does a much better job with many more features and all explorer functions included, just set your main pictures folders as favourites- right click "Add Folder to Favorites",
and you're away. Most importantly, the thumbnails never get deleted and will automatically load by just clicking the folder, no need to scroll down as in Windows Explorer. Double click a file to view full screen, move mouse to left you have, all advanced file
and draw functions, to right, file attributes, EXIF, histogram data, below simple draw functions, image zoom & navigation, mouse to top to get scroll bar to access all images in the folder & navigate to new folders or favorites, return to main program. You
can customize many functions including thumbnails, mouse functions in settings.
    http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDownload.htm
I was still having this problem even after changing the folder permissions based on the "Answer" above.  However, I think I finally figured it out.  The problem was that all my photo thumbnails were being sorted by "Date
Taken" descending.  When I changed this to "Name", which is the default I think, I no longer expericed the long delays while the thumbnails showed up.  So I'm not sure if it was actually a cache issue or just that Windows will always
go through the list of files to try and re-sort (or something) by Date Taken or perhaps whatever other criteria you are using.  Just go with Name and see if that helps.
There should no 'delay' in showing thumbnails, XP never had this problem, if you use Faststone Viewer as I recommend above, you'll never see any delays whatsoever after the thumbnails load the 1st time, and no disappearing thumbnails ever again.

  • New iPhoto not loading photos from CD or time machine

Our hard drive recently failed and we got it replaced.  When they replaced our HD, they upgraded us to Mac OS X 10.6.8 and iPhoto 9.1.5.  We hooked time machine up to restore our old photos and they initially showed up on iPhoto, then most disappeared (thumbnails are now black.  Photo names are still there, but pictures are gone.  When I click on the black thumbnail, I get an exclamation point).  SOME of the pictures loaded, at least half are gone.  I've tried the tricks of command-option clicking iPhoto and clicking all the boxes and downloading iphoto manager.  Nothing.  Then we tried importing an old CD of pictures and they aren't showing up at all (it says "no photos").
So... What's going on?  I want my pictures back!

  • How to retrieve iPhoto 6/OS 10.4 thumbnails that all disappeared during or after thumbnail rebuild requested by the software?

While working in iPhoto, I received a request to rebuild thumbnails and clicked "yes."
At some point (I was coming and going from the project and may have closed down and thenr re-opened iPhoto, but I don't recall), the thumbnails disappeared. In the meantime, I had emptied the IPhoto trash.
All the photos still seem to be there. I closed and opened iPhoto a couple of times and then also restarted the machine. I can scroll through the photos but cannot figure out how to call up the thumbnails, and I gather from other discussions that perhaps I should try to rebuilid library.
    Is that the only option?
If I try to rebuild the library, how do I back it up?
    Many thanks,
    S.

If you find you can't rebuild the library with iPhoto you may have to rebuild it with  iPhoto Library Manager  as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

i was editing vacation photos in aperture 3 all of a sudden the thumbnail disappeared and now all i have is a vertical white line and an orange flag... how do i get my photo back?  thanks

         Hi Frank.
I have just had jb Atlanta's problem while adjusting the contrast on a photo. I was creating a slideshow at the time. After a lot of reading up I was about to give up when I tried restoring the file to its original settings as you suggested. Bingo!
However, that would only work for me, if I restored the settings while in the slideshow. All data had 'disappeared' when I attempted to open the photo in its original project folder.
Hope this is of help. Many thanks.

  • All the images in my Speed Dial thumbnails have disappeared and I can't get them back.

All the images in my Speed Dial thumbnails have disappeared and I can't get them back. When I check the settings all the thumbnails have the site shown in the details so should be showing the site in the thumbnail, but they're just blank. I uninstalled Speed Dial and installed it again, but to no avail. Something is stopping the image appearing but don't know what. I paused blocking on Ghostery, but that makes no difference. Any suggestions would be welcome!

    See [[menu bar is missing]].

  • In my photo album I have the thumbnails of pics but when I try to enlarge to see them they disappear.Help please

My photos have disappeared when I try to enlarge them but are there in thumbnails?

Yes, you can upload directly to FB from Photos but you can only post to your own wall.  I want to select pictures from FB so I can post to a group.  It's not just FB.  Any time I look for that album to attach a picture, the album is not there.  If I compose an email and want to attach a photo from that new album, the album is not there to choose from.

  • Aperture Star/reject ratings have disappeared from pictures and thumbnails.

After several trouble-free months my star ratings and/or reject crosses have disappeared from the pictures and thumbnails, however the stars can still be seen in the appropriate metadata display. I can still add or delete stars from the metadata. Have I accidentally blanked the display?
    T5G5

do any adjustment badges display on the thumbs ??? chances are you accidentally turned off the display badges option ...
in the manual pages 231 and 243 may be of particular interest ... it deals with metadata overlays and badges ...
keyboard shortcuts 'Y' and 'U' will hide the metadata overlays for viewer and browser views ...
    try those ...

  • The thumbnail images have disappeared from one of my sequences

I have 3 sequences open in the timeline and the thumbnail images have disappeared from the clips in one of them. It's very frustrating to work without them, how do I get them back?

Thanks so much! That actually wasn't it though... The thumbnail display was already set to 'name plus thumbnail' but 'track size' was set to 'custom'. Once I changed 'track size' to 'small' (which is what my other sequences which were displaying thumbnails were set to) the thumbnails reappeared. Yipee!!!!

  • Thumbnails disappeared in Pages panel in InDesign CS4

The thumbnails that show the page spreads and the master pages have disappeared in the Pages panel of ID CS4 (on Windows XP SP3). I can't figure out (a) what caused them to disappear or, more importantly, (b) how to get them back. In the Panel Options, I have Show Thumbnails checked for both Pages and Masters, and all 3 of the Icons options checked. Any suggestions on how to get them back would be appreciated.

In followup, I tried to reinstalling ID4 -- a painful process. That didn't solve the problem. So I tried unchecking display thumbnails vertically. That worked in that the thumbnails for both masters and pages displayed correctly horizontally. I then rechecked display vertically and they disappeared again.

  • IPhoto thumbnails disappear - missing photos

iPhoto crashed a few days ago, and I had to rebuild the library. After this was done, my events were all out of order but the photos were still in tact. However, there were about 100 photos in one event that were missing. They were represented by black squares. The thumbnails would show for an instant while I was scrolling through the event, but then the thumbnails would disappear and turn black. When I selected a photo, it showed a black exclamation warning sign.
I back up to Time Machine, so I tried to restore my iPhoto library from an older backup. Those same 100 photos seem to be corrupt in every single backup since the photos were taken. To make it even harder for me to understand, I actually viewed these 100 photos in iPhoto last week and they were fine, so I know they haven't been corrupt since they were imported to iPhoto.
    Are these photos recoverable?

The exclamation mark is an indication that the link/file path between the thumbnail and the master photo has been broken. Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - apply Option #4, Rebuild Database.
