Disappearing .tly files

I have PSE11 on my old Windows XP computer.  I have installed it also on my new Windows7 computer and hoped it would be easy to transfer the photos by backup/restore via an external hard drive.
When I try to restore a backup on to the new computer, no tly file is found.  When I then look at that backup  folder in Windows explorer the .tly file is absent.  I tried again with an older backup, checking first that a tly file had was present, by looking on the old computer with Windows explorer.  Looking with explorer on the new computer - no .tly file.  Looking again with explorer on the old computer, the .tly file is gone!
I  am completely mistified.  I dont't want to keep trying as each successive backup is older.  If the .tly files are gone, I assume the backup becomes useless.  Any ideas would be most welcome.

Hi,
The .tly is certainly the key factor when doing a restore and without you are stuck.
The .tly file will be the last file to be written when doing a backup.
If you are saying that when the backup on the XP PC has completed, you can see the .tly file on the external disk but not when you connect the drive to the Win 7 PC then I suspect that it wasn't ejected from the XP correctly and the last write was still in progress.
When you do the backup on the XP, try shutting the PC down before you disconnect the hard drive. That will force to to complete the write.
We can configure XP to work better but the above would be the easiest way of testing my theory.
Brian
PS - I've had another read of your problem and have a few more questions.
I assumed that you still had PSE on the XP system - is that correct?
How many backups do you have and where are they?
Is there plenty of free space on the external drive?

  • I am trying to restore my catalog having previously done a back up to an external hard drive and subsequently an incremental backup. I am using Photoshop Elements 11 and the only option given in the restore procedure is to open a .tly file.

I have done this but now the restore function is asking for yet another file, which i assume to be the original back up, but that is the only .tly file since the only other relevant file appears to be called catalog.buc but that is just not visible when using the restore function? How do I continue from here with this restoration of my catalog?

Thank you Andaleeb. I appear to have an old backup of a year ago, and a more recent full back up plus an incremental backup.
Regrettably I don't really understand what is going on because firstly the restore does not complete its cycle so I cannot see what that backup file contains and secondly all I have read would suggest that the .tly file is the full backup and the catalog.buc file is the incremental backup. For the present, the catalog shows the photos for 2014 which makes me think I might have backed from the old back up file.
I am minded to create another catalog and try again.
Any views on what I can do?
A backup (full or incremental) is a folder, not a file. It contains renamed pictures file copies as well a copies of the files and subfolders of the original catalog. The catalog.buc is a renamed copy of the database of your original catalog while the backup.tly. That backup.tly file contains the information to restore the renamed pictures where you decide, the original location or a new custom one. You can't do anything with the backup yourself, only the restore process can do the job if it finds the backup.tly file. In the case of an incremental backup, you have to tell the restore process where to find the incremental backup folder; it finds the backup.tly file in that folder and finds what is to restore there; then it asks you for the previous backup folder (in your case the full backup); you then browse to that full backup folder so that the restore process can find find the backup.tly there; the restore then deals with the rest of the files to restore.

  • Cannot reinstate catalog after returning PC (Windows 7) to factory settings (because of worm infection). Catalog was backed up on external drive but not using PSE backup facility. Cannot find and *.tly file. Is this hopeless?

If you made backups of all of your photos and your catalog file using some third-party method (i.e. not using the PSE catalog backup command), then you should be able to restore everything.
Step 1. Put the photos in the EXACT SAME LOCATION as before. For example, if they were in subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents, then they must go into the exact same subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents.
Step 2. Move the catalog file to wherever you want it to be, and then double-click on it.

  • Cloud does not disappear from file name?

why does it take "forever" for the cloud to disappear from file name?
I saved a numbers document to the cloud a half an hour ago, and the cloud is still there.

    HDash-Tech,
thanks for the tip, but since I have my iTunes Library on a NAS I have to direct iTunes every now and than via "choose library" to the folder and it doesn't make a difference...
I think it's somehow due to my iTunes Match.  I know they do not sync audiobooks, but they mess up pretty much everything else within my library.  Songnames here and there and especially cd covers!
Any other idea how to get it straigten out again?
    Thank,
    Daniel

  • Where is the .tly file following a FULL backup so that I can do an INCREMENTAL back up next time?  I can't find it in the catalog folder.

I do a FULL back up of the Catalog to my C drive so that it gets copied onto my external back up drive with automatic back up software.  But when I try to do an INCREMENTAL back up next time I cant find the .tly file for the previous back up path.

    Hello stoneape,
What happens when you try to synchronize using Desktop Software? Do you receive any error messages?
How are you certain that you are currently enabled for wireless syncronization?
    Cheers,

  • PSE8 backup - no .tly file

I had been using PSE 8 Windows Vista Home Premium.  I did a catalog backup to an external drive.  My hard drive died so a new one was installed.  Thought it was a good time to upgrade to PSE10 as well.  It has been installed and I am trying to do a catalog restore from the external but it cannot find a .tly file.  There is a a .dat file and catalog.buc but not .tly.  Any suggestions on what to try next?
    Thanks,
    Barb

A backup created in PSE normally consists of a full backup plus incremental backups.
If your full backup originally contained 500 images, the incremental backup will only contain changes since the last backup e.g. files B000501.jpg, B000502.jpg etc
For a complete restore you start with the TLY file from the latest incremental backup. The program automatically recognizes the number of incremental steps and you will be prompted to insert a disc or navigate to the appropriate external drive.

  • PSE10 missing .tly file

I have PSE10 and have successfully done a FULL Catalog back up to my C drive which is then recopied to my external drive using Acronis non-stop.  When I want to do an incremental back-up, I cant find the .tly file which I understand I need as the previous file path for the incremental back-up.  When I use search on the C drive it doesn't find anything but if use Acronis it says there is a file called Backup.tly on the C drive in a location I would expect to find it - C:\Users\Brian\Pictures\CatalogWor\.  Any ideas anyone?  I have attached my system details if it helps.  Many thanks.

You buy them. These are commercial third-party plug-ins. they may at some point have been bundled with PSE in a promo sale, but otherwise they cost extra (assuming there are versions for PSE10).

  • Bookmarks disappear after file save in Acrobat Pro 9

I recently bought Acrobat Pro 9 and have run into a problem with creating, editing and saving bookmarks. (I use InDesign CS2 to create most of my PDFs.)
On only one occasion could I create bookmarks in a normal manner, i.e., selecting pages to bookmark, creating a bookmark using the keyboard <Command B> and entering text into its label. I got through the entire list of bookmarks and saved the file.
When I reopened it, all but one had disappeared. This has happened most of the time.
But there is an additional wrinkle. Except for that one “normal” occasion, what usually happens is that whenever I create a bookmark (by whichever method), my ability to enter text into the label is so short that the only way I can accomplish it is to prepare a list of label contents in a word processor and copy/paste each line into each created bookmark. And I do have to be quick about it. Acrobat will keep generating functional bookmarks as you go along, but when they're all “Untitled” and you can't get get in there to do any real edits, there isn't any point to having bookmarks. (I'm a fast typist.) Invoking TouchUp Text at first gave me a small reprieve, but since then it hasn't helped at all.
When I save the document and close it, on reopening I find again that all the bookmarks have disappeared. Conclusion: they didn't really get saved in the first place.
    Previously I used Acrobat 5.

I see that this is a very old thread. I'm using Acrobat Pro 9.3.2 on OS 10.6.6 and seeing something similar. No real solution, but I thought I'd add a data point and my workaround.
It seems as though SOME, but not ALL, of my bookmarks are "taking." Right now, whenever I add a bookmark AFTER what's probably the first bookmark created in the document, it MIGHT stick around after a save. When I add a bookmark BEFORE that bookmark (as in "it's positioned higher on the list in the sidebar"), it doesn't save. I ended up moving the "good" bookmark to the front of the list, and then adding additional bookmarks after it. These all stuck around after a save.
Because of bugs like this, I'm using Preview in every case possible. Acrobat does more, but it sucks at the basics things you'd expect to work flawlessly. Oh well!

  • Why do comments in comments list disappear when file is saved after a signature is added?

When working with a workpaper file we are using sticky notes, highlight, adding text to annotate a file. Then later we go back and add "place initials" by things that we verify either have been done or the workpapers support that statement. Upon saving the file before adding the initials the file name is XXXX.pdf and the 110 comments I've made in the file are listed in the comments list. Then when I add my initals the file name changes to XXXX-signed.pdf and the 110 comments I've made are still present, but not viewable in the comments list nor when I click on the sticky note is the information in the note viewable. Why would this information disappear?  How do I get it back?
If there is no fix for this Adobe...this is a great reason for my bosses to decide not to spend the thousands of dollars it's going to cost us to buy and implement your software throughout our firm.  We need to retain the comments on a workpaper file as well as be able to inital and sign our workpapers. Many people work in a single workflle and putting our intials next to an item tells the reviewer that not only did we see the comment from the client, but we also double checked to make sure the inforamtion was input into the system and included in the workpapers farther back in the file.
Any help from the user community would be apreciated.

  • Disappearance of files from Photoshop elements

Photoshop Elements installed my legally purchased copy of Photoshop elements on my PC (about five years ago) but I did not register it immediately. Today I went to check my files and all the images have disappeared. What can I do about this. Is it because I didn't register, or is it because something has changed in the software of my computer. It is very surprising?

It has certainly nothing to do with registration. I think you have a problem with your catalog and that your picture files are still on your hard drive. Did you manage your pictures from the Organizer? Which OS and Elements version ?

  • Mysterious disappearing THM files - iPhone 3.0

I am trying to figure out something that happened while I was developing
a simple web server for the iPhone. While working with version 2.2.1 I was
able to see THM (thumbnail) files and JPG files in the same directory.
The directory ../../Media/DCIM/100APPLE/ held both. So I could download the
thumbnails (fast) and present them in my browser window. Click on the thumbnail
it would open the larger jpg, click on the filename it would download the
file to the laptops desktop. But when I switched to os 3.0, the thumbnails
disappeared. That is, they are no longer in the directory after I did the restore.
Now when I take pictures, no THM files. Does anyone know what the new directory
they could be hiding in? Thanks for any insight on this one.

  • Desktop disappeared with files on it

I just attempted to download a screensaver from the official Dark Knight movie website. I was left with an icon that tried to install something and after a failed installation, everything on my desktop disappeared except for my HD. Even in "Places" the desktop fails to show up. What happened and how can I get these files back?

Oh my Lord, what a mess! I downloaded the screensaver, unzipped and ran it.... My downloads go a folder on the root level of my drive called Downloads. After running the installer my Downloads folder was converted to a package called "tdk-screensaver-a03.saver" which is suppose to open with System Prefs! If I go to System Prefs->Screensavers I'm informed the Screensaver is broken and won't work. I suspect the same thing happened to you. Here's what you will need to do:
    1. Restart your computer. It will create a new Desktop, if it hasn't done so already. There will be nothing in the Desktop folder.
    2. Assuming you had files on your original Desktop you will need to get them out of the old Desktop, which has been renamed and changed to a package.
    3. Open your home folder and right click or Control click on the "tdk-screensaver-a03.saver" icon and select "Show Package Contents"--a new window will open with the contents of your Desktop in it. Select your files and drag them to your Desktop. Trash the bogus "tdk-screensaver-a03.saver" and anything else you see related to the awful screensaver.
    4. Go to your home ~/Library folder, open it and look for a folder with the weird name of "NY" with lots of little accent marks. Trash it.
    5. If you have Time Machine, use it to restore the following files to their pre-disaster state:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.pl ist"
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist"
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.0017f20dca84.p list"
The numbers at the end of the last file will likely be different.
I think everything should be back normal.

  • Disappearing Project files in Logic Pro 9.1.3

    Good afternoon,
I started with Logic Express and have recently upgraded to Logic Studio. Every project I use - once in a while - the project file will disappear from the Project Folder. So, when I attempt to save my song, I get a message that says "The Location of the document <name> cannot be determined".
I have several audio interfaces, so I may switch out items throughout the project - I'm not sure if that could be the problem, yet I cannot imagine that this would not be supported. For example, I'll use an Apogee One throughout, and then switch to a Yeti Microphone (made by Blue).
This is rather frustrating as I have lost a lot of recordings. Thankfully there are recent Backups, but I still lose quite a bit at times. Any ideas?

Nevermind - It appears that there are some open threads on this.

I finish working on a project, render, save and close. When I reopen the project some, not all, of the render files disappear and need to be re-rendered.It doesn't always happen, and I've only noticed it happening after the Mac has been powered off for a while. It's not a big problem but it is inconvenient. Any help is appreciated, as always.

Others may have a better answer...all I can tell you is I've seen this happen from time to time, no particular reason...same with corrupt files...etc...'it's all just ones and zeros'..poor little buggers must just get tired...
I just re-render and move on.
