Disappointed after installing extra RAM :-(

Hi,
Well, I got the RAM today and installed it. It shows up on the "about this Mac" memory list so I know it is okay.
However, I have to say that I am not noticing much of a difference at all in performance. It's really disappointing. There is no increased briskness in terms of opening programs and I am still getting the spinning ball.
I feel like I wasted $100.00 but am hoping there is maybe some system problem I am overlooking.
I really don't want to have to erase and install.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Kallum

Kallum,
You did the right thing in purchasing the RAM, I assure you. Look back at your earlier thread, and you will notice that I hinted at the possibility that there may be more going on with your machine than just RAM issues...
I'm afraid that you are facing the possibility of erasing and reinstalling.
This isn't the end of the world, though, and we can get you back up and running in short order. The key will be making a good backup, from which you can restore everything. In fact, it is likely that you will end up taking more time with this, than with the actual erase and reinstall.
Do follow another poster's suggestion that you reset your PRAM by holding down Option-Apple-P-R at startup, and continuing to hold until your hear a total of 3 chimes, but don't be too disappointed if that doesn't help.
Post back with the results of this, and let me know what resources you have at your disposal for making a backup. An external drive is really what you need, but let me know what you have.

    Hello Malith Ratnayake,
After changing the old RAM by the new one, this issue occurs?
If the issue doesn’t occur when you change back to use old ram, I think it is the RAM hardware issue.
Please contact the hardware manufacturer for better support.

  • Restart Error message after installing additional RAM. PLEASE HELP.

I have a Powerbook G4, 1.33 GHz processor, running 10.3.9. I just recently upgraded my RAM to 1GB, from 256MB. After installing the RAM I have started to encounter problems, where applications will automatically shut down, and also I am receiving a message that cover the entire screen, and states that I must restart the system by holding the power button down, when this appears nothing is functional, I can only power off. I have insured the RAM was installed correctly. I followed all proper procedures when installing. Does this mean the RAM is bad, or something else? Please help!!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Our Powerbooks are sensitive souls when it comes to RAM, due to the Apple architecture and how power is throttled on the memory bus. While memory can meet the Apple specs, typically cheaper RAM can fail with the symptoms you're seeing. Recommend using Crucial, Kingston (not their value ram memory, though), or Samsung. Crucial guarantees their memory will work when chosen from the memory selector on their web site.
It is possible you've just got some bad memory and could get a replacement, however, if the brand is unknown, you may want to return it and obtain one of the brands above.

  • Problem installing extra RAM

    Hi,
I recently decided to increase my RAM. I have an iMac G5 with iSight ( Power PC ). I bought a memory module from the online Apple Store here in the UK, by clicking on the model ( under Memory ) and selecting the 1 Gb module - 533 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM ( it made no specific mention of the PC2-4200 compliancy but I assumed it was the right one given the route I followed ). It duly arrived and I installed it by following the manual. However, on checking About This Mac the extra RAM was not registering, ie still showing the original 512 Mb RAM. I called Apple Tech Support and we tried a few things like resetting PRAM etc,but no change. Eventually, I was put on to sales and arranged to retunr the module and get a refund. I got the impression by the way the conversation went that this was not the first time this had happened.
So, no extra RAM. Anyone tried to install extra RAM in an identical model? And, if so, did they get their module from Apple? I'm assuming this is nothing to do with the fact that I have a Power PC model and the current models are all Intel?
Any help and/or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Any RAM can be faulty, and I suspect the one you got from Apple was. Go online and Google for PC2-4200 (533MHz) DDR2 SDRAM memory. Kingston is a good brand and should come with a lifetime warranty. Most RAM from sources other than Apple is cheaper as well. The RAM you bought is correct for your model, and make sure that when you instal it, you hear it click into place.
    Please post back with results,

  • Mac crashes regularly after installing new RAM

My laptop crashes at least once a day ever since installing new RAM. It seems to be triggered by quitting programs, usually Firefox, Logic or Spotify. There was nothing else connected to the Mac that brought about the latest crash but I do use an Mbox 2 on a regular basis.
Below is the last crash report and also the RAM profile. It's Kingston brand if that means anything.

It's almost impossible to trace back the panic report to a specific cause, but it's highly suspicious that you started experiencing problems after installing new RAM.
It's also strange that your RAM has no stated VendorID, Part Number or Serial Number.
I would return this memory poste haste.
Alternatively, if the DIMMs are from Kingston's ValueRAM range, just dump them in the garbage because that's where they belong. While you're there, look for any other RAM that someone else has thrown away - chances are its ValueRAM, too (hint: I have never seen a single ValueRAM DIMM work in any of my systems, so I avoid them like the plague - shame, since Kingston used to have such a good reputation).

  • After Installing More Ram, MBP Crashes When Using Battery Power

I own a 2.16 Ghz MBP. Last night, I installed 4 Gigs of ram (2x2 Gigs)purchased from crucial.com into my MBP. (Yes, I realize that the MBP only utilizes about 3.3 Gigs of the ram, but I wanted the benefits of running with a matched pair).
After installing the ram, my MBP recognizes the new ram and everything seemed fine. And, it was fine until I unplugged the MBP's power and went mobile. Then, after a few minutes of use, the MBP completely shut down and turned off. I tried turning it back on, but it would not. So, I plugged the MBP and it booted up fine. I unplugged it again, and again, after a few minutes of use, the MBP shut down completely. Being that the battery was fully charged, I don't know why it would behave this way.
Any way, anybody have any ideas as to what might be wrong?

It sounds as if you have a defective battery. I would call Apple and explain your MBP's symptoms. If the battery is swollen it is likely a candidate.

  • 4 hrs later - Computer shut down after installing new RAM (mid 2007 Imac)

Mid 2007 imac and I installed new Ram. It worked for 4 hrs then the Imac shutdown. The pressed power button but no power. Unplugged and replugged the power cord and 3 beeps sounded. I am wondering if it worked for 4 hrs or so, then why did it would it fail 4 hrs later?
I am running the correct ram because in system profiler under memory - it said that everything was ok.
    Any ideas?

or maybe the back tray wasn't tight enough?
I re-installed it now and so far so good.... I pressed tight and in an upwards motion. We'll see what happens

  • High temp after installing more RAM

Got my blackbook delivered a week ago. On monday I finally recieved 2 ram modules of 1gb each. After the installing I noticed a temp increase of 20º C. Core temp was 45º C with 2x256 chips. Now it is at 64º C with 2gb ram.
    So... Is this normal??

It can be normal depending on the quality of the RAM you bought. Try resetting your PRAM…

  • Kernel panic after installing additional ram

    Hi there.
(I think this should go here, not in laptop issues because it seems to be more hardware-related)
I have a laptop Acer Aspire 2920Z with 2x512 Mb stock ram and I recently bought an memory upgrade 2x2gb. Any of them works when inserted separately, but when I install both, I see kernel panic upon starting X on my i686 Arch installation (and /proc/meminfo shows that I have only 3Gb).
The same behaviour occurs when I try to boot from latest Arch install iso or x86_64 archbang livecd.
My BIOS is updated to latest version and it shows that I have 4Gb of RAM installed.
Right now I installed x86_64 linux kernel but I still have kernel_panic on booting my machine.
Is there any chance that I can use 4gb ram on my laptop?
Also, what are the ways to save those error messages that kernel panic provides? (aside from just taking a picture of the screen with my camera)

cra wrote:I installed kernel by changing architecture param in pacman.conf, running pacman -Syy and pacman -S linux, as described in the corresponding page on the wiki, but without reinstalling every single package I have
    Do that step.

The same behaviour occurs when I try to boot from latest Arch install iso or x86_64 archbang livecd.
Wait, you mean just booting the livecd gets you a kernel panic? Insert both of them at the same time, and the test them with memtest86+
Chances are your motherboard pins could have a problem. A problem that is noticiable when you insert both sticks.
    Test them with memtest86+.

  • Macbook dead after installing new ram (1gb in each slot)

After upgrading my MB ram to 2gb (1gb each slot) my MB would not start, no lights or action. I replaced the old ram and still nothing. I then went to a genius bar and they tested it out and even replaced the ram with ones they had and still nothing. I was then told that the logic board was dead. Has anyone had this problem? Since it is out of warranty I have to pay $280 to have them repair it which is a flat fee and they will fix it no matter what is wrong which I find is better then some rates I have seen posted online for $600 just for the logic board itself.
My MB is the 1.83, could 2gb be too much? I have had the MB since July 2006 and recently had battery problems before I replaced the ram. Could this have fried the logic board?
having a mac nightmare right now!

Improperly seated RAM is fairly common... but I haven't seen many comments about inserting RAM actually damaging the logic board... but you do have to use quite a bit of force to get them in there. The good thing is the price that they are charging you for the repair... as you mentioned, I've never seen them charge that little for replacing a logic board. I wonder if that is something new.

  • MacBook won't even turn on after installing new ram

I am using the 2010 MacBook (white 13 inch) I bought ram (two 2gb modules) and was going to install it. I removed my Original ram, but accidentally powered it on it the process (no ram was inside). I got a longed beep. I held the power button and shut it off. I then put the ram back in and it won't turn on. I don't hear any parts moving, no power, nothing. Yes I put the ram in right, an it's tight as can be. Its pushed in well. Help! I never put the new ram in!

The new ram doesn't fit. The laptop won't turn on with old ram. It worked before I removed it now it doesn't. It's I'm there tight so don't tell me to put it in with pressure because I did

    what does 'bad RAM' mean?
    They may be defective.
they are installed correctly, also tried to use one old and one new... they don't work.
Be sure you have them seated correctly. The symptom you give happens if the ram is bad or not seated.
can anyone confirm that the kingston KTAMB667 is the right kit?
The specs show it should work.

  • Problem after installing new ram

Just installed 1 MB of new ram. Everything appears to work with one very annoying problem that never existed prior to installation of ram. The problem is that the window moves slightly with any movement of the mouse. Not a great deal but enough to hide the menu at top of screen. I ran an Apple Hardware Test and all hardware passed. I changed the mouse but no cure. This happens with nothing running so I assume it is not software. It doesn't appear to affect the operation but it tends to make one sea sick with the up and down and side to side motion anytime the mouse is moved.
Shure would appreciate any help with this.

  • NB505-N500 Won't Start After Installing New RAM

I just watched a YouTube video showing how to replace RAM in a Toshiba netbook, but now my computer won't start even after I put back in the original RAM. On the parts label, it shows D3. I bought Crucial CT25664BC1067 2GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 Memory Module. Can someone provide some guida...
    Thank you.

You may want to contact Crucial.
There's a lot of talk of incompatibility in the one-star reviews on Amazon, which are about 14% of the reviews.

  • MacBook does not start after installing more RAM

Ok i bought a second hand MacBook from early 2009 and planned to use it to record songs in a small home studio using GarageBand, Live and protools, it came with 2gigs Of RAM and i tought i should take it up to 4 -the max it can handle- so i bought 2 2gigs a-data RAM sticks i took the factory ones out and put the new ones in but no way the "on/off" light turns on but nothing happens, no sound black screen, if i combine the factory ones and the new Inés whatever the order it works and i get 3 gigs combined but it just Won't Work with the 2 2gig ones in… the 4 are ddr2 working At 667mhz as i checked in the 'about this Mac > more options' what can i do… help! :(

If you bought your RAM at a place that also sells PC RAM you may have gotten mislabelled RAM. PCs can handle different RAM speeds so they’ll often label higher speed RAM as a lower speed rather than make two different speeds of RAM. But Macs are much more picky. They require a RAM stick to be exactly 667mhz not 675mhz or 800mhz. The way to tell is to put one of your old RAM sticks in and it will force the new RAM to run at the correct speed.
This is from one review of PNY RAM:
"These modules are actually 800Mhz. PNY no longer makes or sells 667Mhz modules. Not all computers that require 667Mhz are compatible with 2 800Mhz modules. They refuse to down clock properly. This is especially true with a number of Core 2 Duo MacBooks. Spoke to PNY support, they flat out told me that yes, they sell 800Mhz modules in 667Mhz packaging. If you RMA a module that is 667Mhz (or supposed to be 667Mhz) they will replace it with an 800Mhz module as they no longer have any 667Mhz SODIMMs, not even for RMA replacement!"
