Disappointed in LR 4 Beta

I am very disappointed in LR 4 Beta. LR3 was (is) great, but the lag of manual controls for Highlight Recovery and Fill Light renders the new version almost useless. The Auto settings do a lousy job, darks are much to dark and the lights get burned out ( both even in one picture!) I hope that that can be solved with the official version, Because the brush tools especially for Temp are great. Without an AUTO feature with manual controls for Highlight recovery and Fill Light like it was nearly perfect in LR 3, there will be no update for us to ver 4.0.....We work professional with Photoshop since ver. 2 and LR from the beginning, but this is the first time in almost 11 years, that we are totally disappointed with an new version, it appears to me when I look at the new features that Adobe follows the path of Apple to abandon professional programs and concentrate on consumer ( why do I need video or e-mail here????)

Do you actually mean lag or lack? In the latter case: the new tools are so much mor powerful when it comes to manual control over the tone.
In the first case: there is already a large thread called "Speed" talking about LR 4 performance.
As for auto tone: it is a work in progress. Don't worry, it will be there in the final version.
In general, I see only one single regression in LR 4 (except for the bugs, crashes in the poor performance): flags are now global.

  • Apple and the pro market

So upon a few days of playing and reflection, a few things are clear. Actually they've been coming into focus for a while and it's been pretty clear if you've been paying attention.
Bear in mind that I'm not bitter or angry about this, it's just business. But the bottom line is we need to find other solutions and move on.
    1. Apple is no longer in the Professional market
Please let's not argue over "Professional". Obviously I don't mean if you upload to youtube you don't do good work. There is some genius work being done by kids sitting in the living room with an iMac. No doubt. "Professional" has nothing to do with quality. It has to do with worklfow, clients, and commerce. If you run a facility, you need to move away from Apple solutions. I'm not saying Apple won't magically add the features to FCPX to make it work for facilities, but it's so far off right now that it's not even in the discussion. To people who've never hired editors, or collaborated with audio post house, etc etc, please don't argue. Take my word for it when I say you might as well suggest that a facility begin deploying iMovie in their suites.
By the way, this is not only about video post production. Look across their product lines. Apple changed the game with low cost editing solutions, so we have them to thank for that. Be grateful it happened at all, and now look for other solutions. It was great while it lasted but it's over, at least from Apple.
    2. Apple doesn't generally make these kinds of mistakes
Which is why I don't think it was a mistake. I don't think the product managers are particularly surprised by the reaction. Maybe they are disappointed, but I'll bet you anything they saw it coming. It's just part of the strategy. And that strategy involves selling more seats at a cheaper price to all the people buying DSLRs and finally shooting that movie they've had brewing in the back of their head. Which is great, and I don't begrudge them that at all. But essentially FCPX is not a replacement for FCP7. It's a replacement for FCP Express.
    3. Apple might add the features necessary to use in a profession environment.
I'll grant that this is a possibility, but right now it feels like a long way off. And if you are running a shop you need one thing above all else. A plan. And if you don't know that these features are coming, why on earth would you spend any time investing in training? I doesn't make any sense. There are so many things missing that I just don't see it happening. For starters, I've never hired an editor that didn't completely re-arrange the layout of FCP to suit their style of working. The list goes on. Yes, there are some cool things in FCPX. We may even install it on the machines so we can modify some shots using those tools. I'm not sure, we need to keep investigating. But as facility tool it's a non-starter.
    4. Why does a one man band care?
Well, here's where it gets tricky. And this is why this version may be a miscalculation on Apple's part. Even somebody sitting alone, editing at 10x speed due to FCPX's "revolutionary workflow" will likely eventually need to communicate with the outside world. Suppose you edit your masterpiece, submit it to a festival, but the audio *****? You realize this is your big break, but you don't have the skills to sweeting the audio yourself. Now what? Autoduck to OMF I suppose. Or maybe you've gotten your edit 90% there and you need a rock star editor to come in and really finish it off. Erm... who would that be, exactly? So I guess my point is, unless some real interchange is built in quick, people are going to be sandboxed without the ability to exchange and collaborate. And collaboration is the lifeblood of this industry.
    5. What now?
Well, the prevailing attitude seems to be "What's your problem? Keep using FCP7 you Dinosaur Who Hates Progress! What, you want to go back to floppies too?!" I'm sure we will keep using FCP7, but eventually it's a dead end. There will be system update which fixes some other bug and simultaneously breaks something in FCP. So we'll be in a trap. Not to mention having no hope of the existing bugs (gamma shifts, cough) never being fixed. But the real issue is access to labor. Essentially there are Avid editors and there are FCP editors (with a lot of them doing both). I've never once tried to hire a Premiere editor, though I suppose it's possible some know Premiere it or could find their way around it, but I'm not exactly willing to pay an editor to learn how to navigate the UI. So... for this one I suppose what we'll do is add a Media Composer to an edit suite and start using Premiere on the graphics workstations and see how that goes.
There is obviously a split on this board. So to those of you who don't understand why many professionals have a negative reaction to this release, maybe this post will help explain why. It has nothing to do with "progress" of the fear thereof. I'll no doubt personally keep playing with FCPX at home to see what it has to offer, but generally speaking I use tools that play nice with other tools. For all the hysterical reaction, well, I *do* get it. It's bit like having the rug pulled out from under you. But oh well. It's not the end of the world. There are other tools out there. Personally I'm starting to wonder if Motion isn't the real story here.
And like I said, maybe Apple *does* have a plan for adding the required functionality. If they do, I wished they'd tell us straight up. I'd cheer that news. I'm just not convinced that they have any desire to be in this market any more. Apple didn't exit the professional marked because they hate you. I'm sure they did it because it wasn't profitable to them. Apple (or any company) doesn't really make emotional decisions, they make economic ones. We need to do the same.

VERY well said.     Everyone who is furious and feels betrayed uses the word "clients"
All the folks calling us Ludite Greybeards have NEVER dealt with a client.
The only thing that i would disagree with is that i DO think this is a massive mistake.   This isn't the Steve Jobs Apple Corp that we knew and loved (yes, past tense).    I don't think anybodys hands are on the wheel of this ship.
They were the dominant, industry standard...  and they snuffed a once proud FCP franchise out of existence in one day.
And this makes me VERY worried about Lion.
Speaking of Lion,  in one months time....  you will only be able to buy new Macs that have Lion.   And you can't install FCP7 under Lion (and you can't buy FCP7 anyway).    So this is an absolute end of the road for any pro shop.   Right now.  Today.

  • Printing in Captivate 7?

I have a programme I have developed in Captivate 5.5 which I opened and saved in verion 7.  The print widget does not work in version 7.
How can I print a page in Captivate 7 without purchasing a print widget?

Sorry, this isn't an answer, but I have the same question, so I've been rooting around the forums searching. It does not look like it is possible to export user variables into a word template, but it is possible to print out a user's typed text using user variables, and a working print widget.
But the catch is, Captivate's print options are very limited - there is a print widget you can insert on the slide, but it doesn't give the user any options and will usually print a slide off-center, with a warped ratio. It will print the entire slide.
-You can also code your own print button with javascript by typing window.print(), but it has similar limitations.
-There is also a print playbar (under project>skin editor> theme) you can select that has a print icon at the bottom, but for some reason, it has never worked for me. The icon is always whited out and non-functional.
-Some users have created 3rd party widgets as a work-around, but the ones I've found only work for flash, and not HTML5. If you are exporting in Flash, you could create a slide that recalls all of the user variables (by creating a textbox and inputting '$$user_variable$$ for every variable) in your project and print that slide using this widget.
-Someone on the forums suggested using the Notes interaction and allowing the users to print those out - but I do not know how to allow that.
The fact that Captivate provides a non-functional print function is disappointing, and I expected better of Adobe. I would love to be proven wrong.

  • Zen CAST organizer: the triumph of the creat

Ok, can someone tell me the meaning of this stupid program?
When I saw it I thought that finally Creative labs released a new organizer to resolve the HUGE problems they kindly gave us with the last stupid firmware.
But once again, Creative showed us how incompetent they are... they just made a stupid commercial thing to copy Apple.
And this new organizer is totally useless, because all you can do is download music from their affiliated partners (under payiment of course) and transfer it in an arcane and not customizable way to your MP3.
Is this progress? I don't think so. The original organizer of the 2004 was WAY better and more advanced then this crappy thing.
Good job Creative, instead of progressing you are going down!

    To jassy:
thank you very much for your advices, I checked the programs online and it seems that they can be a good alternati've to our old, dead and beloved Media Organizer.
But still I think it's very sad that we have to pay third parties to recover the functionality of our beloved Zen Xtra because Creative isn't able (or doesn't care) to give us a decent solution after the mess they caused with the last firmware.
I think Creative should care more of her customers beacuse, after all, it's thank to us if she got so much success in the last years. I read the posts in this forum and I saw how many people are disappointed. And I bet that a lot of these people are old Creative customers like me.
So why don't they try to make a Creative Media Organizer with all the functionalities of the old one (the pre-firmware upgrade)? Is it so hard to make it's I don't think it's impossibile, because Winamp and other third parties software can reach similar results.
Maybe it's me, but I don't see the point in releasing this new, useless organizer that doesn't fix ANY of the problems that you can find in the many threads around here...

  • Sony Xplod (CDX-GT820IP) Ipod Communication error

Ipod Communication error, with my new Ipod nano exchange the radio and the ipod no change. However my old ipod wheel works fine, all feature accessible. I was very disappointed new should be better should it not. Dunno but as someone who know a little about technology. terrific video, nice music quality, however the main reason for buying the unit was to use in my vehicle, since i own another unit for gym use. I saw the post about an additional access. However that is a bit much since the already has the technology to make the older unit compatible and so she the newer on. (Charging not allowed with the connector) If you however star playing a song and the connect the unit the song will then play with car stereo control, and the AUX connection works fine however control is not possible with AUX not ipod related. This is a HUGE ISSUE...FLAW

Not sure if this thread is really still going or not, but here's what I found on Sony's site for the CDX-GT820IP; which I recently got just after getting the 4G iPod Nano:
    http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=43&mdl=CDXGT820IP
A lot of iPods are listed; but not the 4G nano... It's a shame. I have an older 2nd generation nano that works great with the deck... it takes less than two seconds for it to recognize that the iPod's been connected and start playing music. Problem is, the older nano is my husband's, so I have to convince him to let me load "my" music on his ipod... who'd have thought we'd be fighting over who got to use the old one!!
    Anyway, hope this helps...

  • A sobering historical perspective

Let me say that I am disenchanted with LR.
That said, I began thinking about companies that tried to combine programs. The one that I remember is Microsoft trying to have a single program for Word, Excel and Access. That single program is no more.
I'm struck by how poorly LR does the complete job.
iMatch as one example is easily better as a file management program. RSP is easily a better workflow converting RAW files. Qimage is undeniably the best way to print files.
So where did Adobe come with the idea that one program does all?
    Vaughn

    Insight,
I agree that it does many things poorly, but won't rehearse all that--all anyone has to do is get acquainted with the seemingly endless posts on one or more aspects of the problems.
In part the level of diaappointment stems from Adobe making the ridiculous claim that it is a one stop, do-it-all, program. That is marketing hype and nothing more. Anyone that is using it that way (at the present time) has very, very simple photographic needs or is a recent Newbie with little or no experience of other applications to be aware of what is missing or what doesn't work yet. Others who either believed that hype or simply hoped it was true are finding out that it really isn't. Unrequited expectations!
Promise? Sure, given time it may become a mature and very effective application. I too hope it does. But, excusing its shortcomings now because it is V1 is trite and meaningless. It should not have been released prematurely.
The only valid NOW measure of it is workflow comparisons using alternative, existing, established image editing and DAM software--not hype or wishful thinking. Bridge 2 is faster. ACR 4 has a more streamlined, faster working GUI, renaming, and kewording feature set. PSCS3+ACR4 ditto. IVMP as a DAM is faster and automatically updates any folder or file changes. Library won't. IdImager is a vastly better full featured DAM. All these will see, load, and allow editing of same-named images with different extensions--an absolute must for working photographers! LR won't do that. Just look at the endless threads on this ridiculous feature of LR! Just a few examples.
But, these are mature apps--or a lot more mature with far more cohesive and complete feature sets and amenable to faster, easier workflow. AND they are the alternatives that LR must be measured against--not promises!
Having said all this, my view is that the image editing and DAM apps one chooses is simply a personal choice, and that can be based on present day performance or hope for the future! To each his own!
But let's don't delude ourselves that LR is ready for serious photographic work-- by established photographers with bring home the daily bread workflow requirements or amateurs with large well established archives. It simply isn't by reasonably objective, relative measures, and that of course is why I am also very disappointed by this 'advanced beta' release that Adobe has called 'V1' Having been part of the beta process, I did not expect V1 to be this weak.

  • Problems with new  Macbook Aluminum 13" Airport not found + Dead Pixel

I'll start off by saying that this is my first Mac. I noticed today that I have a dead pixel (not a big deal I can exchange it, kind of a pain since I have already installed all my files and configured windows XP). My other problem is with the Airport card. The error I get is "No AirPort card installed". When I go into system preferences/network/Airport tab and click "Turn Airport On" nothing happens and the status is "off". I also try "Assist me..." and run the network diagnostics for the AirPort and it just scans forever and finds nothing. Now, here is where it gets fun. It works just fine on the Windows XP side. Like I said, I am going to exchange this Macbook anyways b/c of the pixel but I would like to know what is going on here incase this happens again. The Airport was working fine yesterday on both Mac and Windows. I'm very impressed with the graphics but disappointed that XP runs better on my new Macbook then Mac OS X.

If you have a USB2 hard drive you can spare (it will be formatted as a Mac drive, not FAT32) you can do a Time Machine backup of the machine before the exchange. You can then load that into your replacement machine and not have to reinstall anything. That's how I went from my old MacBook to the new one on Tues and it was very slick. Even Windows (under Parallels) was installed.
Oops .. just noticed date of original post: My advice is a tad too late

  • When is the next version of Safari 4

I have to say I am disappointed with the Public Beta. It is buggy (as you might expect from a Beta), but the only improvement appears to be the Top Sites page option.
My main beef is that it the Refreshing Page and Adding Clippings have inexplicably been withdrawn and, although one can key Apple+R to do the former, this seems a retrograde step for those who are not quite so savvy.
It's also liable to crash or hang, and has required force-quitting on a number of occasions. Also, if you hit trouble and have to quit, there is no option to "Remember Tabs", as in some other browsers.

When is the next version of Safari 4
When Apple announces it. Everyone here is just a fellow user like yourself so noone here will know.
My main beef is that it the Refreshing Page .... have inexplicably been withdrawn
It's still there. It's just moved to inside the URL box on the right hand side.
It's also liable to crash or hang
Works fine here. Crashing is more often than not caused by an incompatible plugin.

  • No New Hub Supplied

Rather annoyed, that after signing up to Infinity 2, I found I was not entitled to the Hub 3.
I thought that making a new contract with BT would entitle me to this and on questioning Customer Services was told it could be bought or supplied in the HH2 was broken.  Also told that it was the same as the HH2 anyway but the advertising says:
The new BT Home Hub router gives you our best ever wireless signal thanks to smart wireless and 'N' technology. It also has built-in security and is more energy efficient.
Which to me indicates that it is new and improved.
Anyone get a new hub on resigning to Infinity 2?

I assume you must have one of the modified HH2s?
I think you will find that the HH3 is a bit of a disappointment, and you are better off with the HH2, which has the same security and wireless "n".

  • Why no iBookstore in iTunes??

I love reading eBooks on my iPad. It is so much easier on my eyes than reading physical books because of the adjustable backlighting and the adjustable print size. And I can read in bed at night and not disturb my wife by having to have the light on.
And I think the iBook App is really cool and works really well. I just have one HUGE problem with it.
When I'm at work I use a PowerMac which has iTunes, and at home I have a MacPro with iTunes that the iPad is synced to.
When I'm at work, on numerous occasions someone has recommended a book that I might like. But there is no way for me to find out if that book is available for my iPad through the Apple iBookstore because the only way I can connect to the Apple iBookstore is if I physically have my iPad with me at the moment, which I don't when I'm at work. But I can see if the book is available through Amazon for the Kindle App right there at work on my PowerMac computer. I don't need the iPad to check if the book is available for eRead. So I end up purchasing from Amazon because I know the book is available. I would much prefer to buy from the Apple iBookstore, but again, when the impulse to purchase is strongest (right after someone recommends a book to me and tells me how good it is), there is no way to check if the book is even available from the Apple iBookstore, much less to buy it.
Why can't Apple do the same thing with the iBookstore that they do with everything else on iTunes, where you can purchase the music, or movie, or audiobook, or App right on the computer through iTunes, and sync it with the iPad later in the evening?
    Best,
    -Tim

Yep, sadly this is what I'm doing. The reading experience on the ipad for me is way better than a real kindle but am settling for reading on a Mac Kindle Reader. I even have two books published on bridge (the card game - not me as author) on Amazon's Kindle Store and on the ibookstore, and I have sold way, way more on Amazon, even though it isn't nearly as nice to see on a kindle.
+*Come on Apple, please at least tell us why you haven't implemented ibooks directly in itunes, and whether you have plans to change+ it?*
I'm also frustrated at the ibooks search interface. My books are obviously in a games section, but is there one in the drop-down list in the ibookstore? Is there heck. Perhaps mine are the only such books! I ask questions of the [email protected] email support, but I often don't get a reply from them either. (apart from the oh so irritating automatic reply)
I have sent in feedback by the way, around a month ago, but have heard nothing. I'm generally despairing of Apple's customer service regarding ibooks, having used Macs almost exclusively since the '80s its quite disappointing.
    I feel better now.
P.S. I've run the spellchecker on this post before submitting it and it doesn't recognize ipad, itunes, ibookstore, email, but it had no problems with Amazon or Kindle. Whatever next!

  • It is disappointing that Firefox does not have an add-on to support the Google toolbar, American Express toolbar and the United Shopping Mile Toolbar. Without this functionality, internet explorer becomes a better option.

This incompatibility occurred with the upgrade to Firefox 5.0. While instability was a problem with the earlier version of Firefox, at least I could use the previously mentioned toolbars.

The GTB '''7.1.20110512W''' version works in Firefox 5.0 by using the Compatibility Reporter extension, I tried it myself due to the large number of postings about the GTB this morning. <br />

For the others, check for an updated version of those toolbars from wherever you got them from originally.

  • I'm very disappointed to see that CS6 Beta has not caught up with Lightroom's HSL adjustments.

The HSL / Color adjustment in Lightroom is way ahead of what is available in Photoshop in terms of ease of use and flexibility, IMO. To achieve the same results in Photoshop requires a combination of the HSL, Selective Color etc adjustment layers ...
For example, changing the image on the left to the image on the right in the link below takes seconds in Lightroom ... but is very difficult to do in Photoshop.
    Lightroom Images
I would love to see an adjustment layer in Photoshop which is as powerful as the one in Lightroom.

I contacted Amazon who told me no because it was downloaded and told me Adobe might make an acception. Then I called Adobe who told me they can't refund me because I obought it on amazon
    I looked here http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/return-cancel-or-change-order.html#Retur n your order
    and it says:
    From a reseller:
Any Adobe product purchased from any seller other than Adobe, may only be returned to the seller from which the product was purchased, in accordance with that seller's return policy, if any.
Who is totally different from this:
Adobe offers a 30-day, money-back guarantee. If, within that period, you are dissatisfied with the software, you can return it to Adobe. This applies to any software purchased directly from Adobe, or any of their certified resellers. If bought from Amazon (not through Amazon Marketplace, from a 3rd party), just have your Amazon receipt/invoice handy. Contact Adobe directly, per Steve's Reply, and they will take the software back, if within 30 days of purchase. Do not let the time for that return lapse, as there is not "wiggle room."
So one place says I can return it, another says I can't. Im within my 30 days.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Lack of Availability is Disappointing

I don't know if this is so much and idea or suggestion as it is a complaint.  I did not see a better area on the Verizon website to provide my disappointment though.  I moved into my current residence about 10 years ago.  My zip code is 11720.  At that time, I was approached by a FIOS salesman who tried to sell me on home services.  I asked if TV was an option, and was advised that it was not currently an option in my area, but that they expected its availability shortly.  It is now 10 years later and FIOS TV is still not available in my area.  Your company spends millions on advertising every year, but what good does that do you if your product is not available?  I find it a bit ridiculous that I have been waiting a decade and FIOS TV is still not available in my area.  In fact, it makes me truly question whether Verizon is the leader in the industry that it claims to be.  And when I say waiting, I mean waiting, because once is becomes available I am going to switch in a second.  So here is at least one customer that you could have had for the past 10 years, and maybe 20-30 more, but you will never see a dime of my money for the simple reason that you refuse to do what is necessary to bring FIOS TV into my area.  Just doesn't seem like a good business move to me.  I am very, very disappointed in your company!!

A couple of notes to help you on your quest:
    1) These forums are for customer to customer help.  Verizon reps sometimes escalate specific service issues to the customer service team, but other than that nobody at Verizon responds to feedback such as yours here.
    2) Cable TV service is a political issue.  Depending on where you live, local and/or state governments have the authority to grant franchises to provide cable TV (FiOS TV is a cable TV service, legally speaking).  Verizon has lobbied some states to allow state wide franchising.  As you can imagine, the incumbent cable TV companies fight very hard to keep Verizon out and have fought to block state wide franchising.  Some existing franchises agreements may even be exclusive.
In short, I am certain that Verizon wants to provide TV service in all areas they've installed FiOS.  If they haven't been granted the franchises, this is most likely due to the current franchises agreements.  If this is really important to you, you'll need to dig into the local and or state process for cable TV franchising and find out why Verizon hasn't gotten one.  Your local politicians may be able to offer some insight.
    Good Luck.
