Disappointed with Nokia N8 and Belle

I have been using Nokia phones since 2000 and I was recommending it to all my friends. The last one I bought- Nokia N8 has disappointed me.
The  big + is the integrated GPS and offline maps. Excellent camera...
 Why disappointed:
 Price I paid- $ 450+.
Since May 2011:
A big grayish spot appeared on the display after 2 weeks. Visible only when the phone is off.It does not bother me but still this phone is $450.... Now I can not cell it.
USB port broke after 2-3 months. Replaced- 3 days at Nokia Care point in NYC.
Integrated GPS stopped working after Anna update- 3 daysX 2- 3 hours online chat with Nokia Care and 10 days repair. The internal part of the phone was replaced. The display is still the same.
 Belle- improved Anna, but..
Battery life has been enormously reduced. Practically if you want long battery life- turn the phone off.
Power savings mode option has moved to the hard button on the top. Difficult to access because of the protector.
Google Maps is not working. (Nokia maps is OK but GM has easy access to public transit directions and has more business location info) Now Nokia Public Transit app is a step forward, but its still separate app.
 Many Apps are not compatible.
No short cut for positioning method directly from maps/ driving. You have to dig thru the phone's settings.
Anna's clock small widget with date is no more available.
No shortcut to the specific mailbox.
 Text messaging is confusing.
 Data log history is unavailable.
No "vibration only"  profile allowed when the phone is on power savings mode.
Anna and Symb had an option to choose when and how to connect a single application to the internet. (internet- always ask) Now with Belle its more complicated.
No shortcuts to various settings- dig, dig, digg....
Quick Office Pro (sold in Nokia Store) does not read .doc files anymore with Belle.
No option to add contact to group when creating it as new.
 Search widget almost never works.
 Remote lock does not work.

i totally agree with you. i cant get into half off the apps (the ones i paid for) mainly because it sends me to a link to download OVI when its downloading the file it then says its "unable to install ive done everything, thinking its the software of belle that didnt download properly.. a glitch in the software or i'd done something.. my phone it now being used as least as possible. the basics of this model (calling/contacts/messages) isnt as easy as previous..
after reading on here and many other discusion sites it seems like this model (N8)
DOES have a fault with the belle software. and needs to be sorted pronto
or at least give the option to refer back to anna.
this phone it well established to have so many hicupps!!
ive been with nokia for years think the 3310 was my first but my upgrade is due and im looing for other options - something i'd never do..

  • Nokia 500 and Belle Refresh: browser issues.

    Greetings.
The Belle Refresh was indeed a welcome refresh for this low-to-midrange phone. However, there is a serious issue with the browser.
With the update to Qt 4.8, you inherited QtWebKit, an amazing browser I know very well. In a desktop, it's fast, although it eats more memory than Firefox. However, in a cell phone like the 500, with limited amounts of RAM, this browser freezes the phone, due to the lack of memory. I'm also sure this browser can and will break phones with more memory and Belle FPx, since I've made QtWebKit use more than 1 GB of RAM in a computer running KDE.
There is a way to avoid this, called "user agent". Opera Mobile avoids this scenario by telling pages through user agent "hey, don't be hard on me, I'm browsing this from a cell phone", and pages adjust themselves to that scenario. However, you didn't tweak the user agent in your browser.
If you add no user agent tweaking, full HTML5 support, Flash Lite support (the much higher specced iPhone 4S doesn't support Flash), and low memory, you get a nightmare scenario.
    1. The webpages send their complete, full featured DESKTOP versions to my Nokia 500.
    2. QtWebKit supports everything, so, it makes a faithful attempt to properly render the page, even with Flash apps.
    3. Nokia 500 has only 70-80 MB of RAM free for apps to use.
    4. Boom.
Can you release a hotfix for Belle Refresh, changing the user agent of Nokia Browser to something that can trigger the mobile version of web pages? In that scenario, QtWebKit will eat much less memory and everyone will be happy. And please, can you do this for everyone using Belle Refresh?

I can confirm serious browser issues with the Belle refresh on a C6-01 device. The crash is so severe that only taking out the battery helps. It typically occurs when scrolling larger, feature-rich (and image-rich) webpages, so far I've seen this only on mobile connections (Edge, Umts), but that may be due to lack of testing with WLAN. (Where I've got WLAN I've usually a more powerful device as well..

  • Problem with Nokia Camera and Smart Sequence

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with Nokia Camera and the Smart Sequence mode.
Basically, if you take a picture using nokia camera, and view it in your camera roll, it usually says, underneath the pic "open in nokia camera".
Well, if I take a pic using the Smart Sequence mode, it just doesn't say "open in nokia camera" so, to use the functions of smart sequence (best shot, motion focus, etc), I have to open nokia camera, go to settings and tap the "Find photos and videos shot with nokia camera" option.
Does anyone has the same problem? Anybody solved it?
I already tried reinstalling nokia camera, but that didn't help.
I'm running Nokia Black on my 925.
    Thanks everyone!

    Hi,
I had the same problem with my 1020. It did get fixed with the last update to Nokia camera.
However, IIRC, it didn't just happen right away. When browsing the camera roll I'm pretty sure that the "open with Nokia camera" text wasn't there.
Slightly disappointed I opened the (Nokia) camera anyway and was going to test the smart sequence again. I noticed the only precious pic I'd taken using this actually appeared top left of the screen.
I opened it and I had all the smart sequence editing options again - that we're missing previous. Made a new picture and saved it.
Now when in camera roll the text shows below the image and all is good.
This probably doesn't help much except that it didn't seem to fix automatically.
I work @Nokia so I can ask around a bit to see if this is a known / common issue (not that I know any developers)

When you buy an iPhone in the U.S. it's locked to that country with the carrier you bought it for.
If you bought the device unlocked in the U.S. it's unlocked, you can use it on any carrier. Even one's outside the country.
If you want to do a repair on a device you bought in the U.S. and your using it in another country, you must send it back to the U.S. Why? That's where you bought it from.
AppleCare Protection Plans and AppleCare Limited Warranties are registered to your hardware.
    Your hardware is your iPhone.
Wherever hardware that was bought then that's the country it was designed to be used in and that's where it was manufactured.
Apple is very localized - if you call U.S. tech support, you'll speak to somone in your country.
So, what does all this mean?
In order to do a repair, you need to send it back to the country you got it from.
And we're all customers like you. We understand that you're upset, but Apple isn't gonna bend the rules to one individual.
Policy is policy. Get over it.

  • Really disappointed with Nokia Care

I bought a 920 around a month and a half back but few weeks ago the touchscreen and the capacitive buttons stopped working. I did a number of soft resets but it didn’t respond. So, I took the phone to Nokia Care and they did a complete system wipe and re-flashed the firmware and returned the phone. It worked for a few days but again broke down with the same problem few days back. The phone had stopped working on the third day itself but after a few soft resets it started working and didn’t freeze up once until few weeks ago where it stopped working altogether.
I went to Nokia Care again hoping for a replacement this time. But they reflashed the firmware and said that it fixed it but they returned me the phone with a dead battery. They made some lame excuse about not having the charger. So, I couldn’t check it there but they assured me that it was fixed. I went home, charged it up only to find that the same problem still persists. Now, I don’t know what happened there but I know it magically didn’t break down on my way home. How could they think that this will deceive me?
I am a huge Nokia and Microsoft fan and I paid a huge amount for this phone (around $800, which is a lot in an impoverished country like Nepal) but I am really disappointed with this. For such a high end phone, I ought to be getting a decent service. But this is an utter disgrace. Even the technicians are so rude. When I insisted that it was a hardware problem and that I needed a replacement calmly, they replied harshly saying that they fixed the problem, as if we having some kind of brawl. They even stated Nokia doesn’t offer replacements for Lumia series because it is a high end phone and very expensive. Now, this is nonsensical! Why are they finding it so difficult to replace the phone? Are they neglecting because I live in a small country?
Nokia really needs to step up their game if they want to capture the market share like Samsung. A similar incident happened to my friend’s Galaxy S3 – they replaced it without any issues whatsoever.
I had been recommending Lumia series to many of friends but now, after this incident, I don’t know what to say. This is one of the worst services I have ever experienced. I am taking the phone back to Nokia Care for the third time in 6 weeks tomorrow. I really hope I get my replacement.

Same here, and some other forum goer as well.
Perhaps you should try another Care point if possible at all, maybe you'll get better service there.
Else keep bringing it in, in my country you're by law forced to either fix, replace or give the money back when a product is faulty.

  • Trouble to sinc with Nokia Suite and Nokia c6-01

    Runtime Error !
    Program: C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Nokia Suite\NokiaSuite.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information

    Follow this instruction:
    /t5/Maemo-and-MeeGo-Devices/Nokia-Link-for-Vista-Ovi-Suite-for-N9/td-p/1194985#
and your N9 is working with Nokia Suite 3.2.100
Don't forget to disconnect from Internet during installation of 3.0.0.290.
After upgrade to 3.2.100 you can use the Nokia Suite for your N9.
Only one exception: Maps are not supported.
In case the Suite crashes during calendar synchronization with Outlook then just delete the PC-SYNC calendar on your N9 and try it again. It should work now.

  • Trouble with Nokia 6680 and iSync

I have a Nokia 6680 and an iMac. Recently I wanted to clean up my contact list but I'm having problems in this.
Contacts created in the phone get transfered to my computer with iSync easy, but I can't transfer all my contacts created in my iMac to the Nokia 6680.
It used to work sincronizing a hundred contacts, but now I can't do it with 40 or 50. It's supposed to work all the ways but it doesn't.
What should I do? Is there any kind of limitation with my phone or iSync?

    Hi trav!
We're having the exact same problem. If you search this forum (and others), you'll find more threads regarding this issue..

It seems to be impossible to get in touch with Nokia developers. They are probably on vacation..
We've struggled with this for about 2 weeks now,and the most likely reason is:
    1. It's a bug
    2. The locator url has changed since the phone has two cameras.

  • Problems with Nokia 6070 and CA-42 cable

Hi I have Nokia 6070, CA-42 cable, downloaded newest Nokia PC Suite (6.82), but I still have problems with connection. When I plug cable into the phone, it say : Data enhancement connected, and then Enhancement not supported. I properly installed Nokia PC Suite, but I still don´t have connection, because PC can´t recognise my phone. I tried many advices written here on discussion, like repairing cable drivers, re-installing PC Suite, restarting PC, but nothing works. Could you give me advice ?. Further informations in attached screenshot. http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/1193/nokia3in.jpg regards Viliam Tomaníček, Slovakia

    12th Jan, 2010
Ok guys let's see if this helps...  the problem is NOT Nokia PC Suite, the USB to Nokia Enhancement connector ie; the CA-42 data cable, your cell phone or your computer.
It's in your computer' settings... The answer to this problem with this particular cable is actually in the Nokia PC Suite "Help".  It's  under "Configuring connection types"  They  refer to it by name.
Unfortunately, (1) you kinda have to stumble into it... thank goodness I did and,   (2) you kinda have to be a bit of a computer geek to understand what they are trying to say...
The point is that they are basically tricking the computer to "see" the USB cable as a 9 or 25 pin serial DIN cable connection that would normally go into the COM1 or COM2 ports, which are still on the back of some PCs, but not available on modern laptops anymore.
My PC is Windows XP Service Pack 3.  I will describe what I had to do to get the cable to work.  Vista and Windows 7 users… just follow the principle.
You need to (1) configure Nokia PC Suite as well as (2) your PC/Laptop (in Control Panel) to "see" the USB connection as - COM3... here's how I did it for my PC.
Step - 1:  Install the CA-42 Cable Drivers first using the install CD that was provided with the cable using "Found New Hardware"  remember this is the XP experience...
Some preamble - I thought that installing the Nokia PC Suite does all the cable driver bits as well, but it looks like you actually have to install the cable drivers (Note – cable drivers first) and then the Nokia PC Suite app software separately.  I got a “file not found error - ser2pl.sys” installing Nokia PC Suite.  You don’t get that when you let the “Found New Hardware” wizard install it from the install CD. Don't restart your computer until the end of this rather lengthy two-step process... just click "Restart later"...  I'll tell you when to restart...
START POINT (Still Step 1) - Ok, so now we are starting....
    Shut down your system...
Plug in the CA-42 USB cable into a USB port.  Important here… if you have a PC, decide on which USB port you are going to use ie; front or back USB ports.  If you successfully install the cable drivers on one USB port, you cannot go taking out the USB cable and sticking it into another USB port on the same computer.  You will lose the cable driver install completely.  However if you plug the USB cable back into the original USB port used to install the cable driver software, it will re-appear in “Device Manager”.  Maybe it does the same with laptops as well, I do not know..
Turn on your system...  do not connect your phone to the CA-42 cable yet.
On restarting, Windows will find new device (CA-42 USB to Serial), try to install it automatically and come back and say... it was not installed properly (probably because of COM port conflicts)... let that finish, close it off and ....
While that was happening a "Found New Hardware"  wizard will appear...let it happen.. do not close this.. let it sit and wait, we want to use this.... it is going to ask for the install CD, but guess what... when you insert the install CD (at least, if it's the same as the on I got) it’s going to kick off yet another install process.
Put the supplier's install CD in your player, that is going to kick off the CD's automatic install (autorun.inf),  cancel it off.. do not run the automatic CD's install, it will not work !.  Continue with Found New Hardware and let Windows find the CA-42 cable drivers on the install CD (from your drive D: or whatever) and install… do not restart your computer yet.
At the end of this, if you check Settings - Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - Ports (COM & LPT),  you should see an entry for - "CA-42 USB (COM something).  That COM something will probably be COM1 or COM2.  Highlight this and right click.. go Properties, Port Settings, Advanced – In XP, there is a box to select “COM Port No.”  Set this to COM3.  The driver should say that the “device is working properly”.  Click Apply, OK and exit Control Panel….  Do not restart yet..
So now we have XP set… let’s set the app…. Nokia PC Suite
STEP 2 – Setting Nokia PC Suite.
Some preamble - In July 2009, I bought version 6.4.8 of Nokia PC Suite with the CA-42 cable.  I installed it and I was unable to get the cell phone to see “Nokia PC Suite”.  After much trial and error, I flung it aside.
Well this past weekend , I decided to have another go at it.
I uninstalled it and downloaded and installed a more recent version from Nokia’s support site… version 7.1.40.1  … cell phone still giving “Enhancement not supported” message.  Could not believe that I was that unlucky…
Again after much trial and error, I got it to work – a classic case of the simplest thing being so darn difficult…. So here goes..
Download the latest version of  “Nokia PC Suite”, if the version you get is the one I got (7.1.40.1), , then you need to -
Do not connect the CA-42 cable to your phone yet.  It should be connected to your computer on the USB end in it’s original install USB port !!
Start up Nokia PC Suite - Go Settings, Manage Connections
Tick off only “Serial Cable (CA-42), this should be in the list assuming you installed it correctly in Step 1
Highlight it and the little spanner (Configure) at the bottom should now be enabled
Click on Configure.. the little spanner
If it is saying “COM1” click on the little down arrow to the right.  COM3 should come up in the list
Click on COM3… stop right here,  do nothing
NOW….  you plug in the Enhancement end of the cable into your phone.  If it still gives the “Enhancement not Supported” error, don’t panic.  Make sure the cable is into the phone nice and secure.  By the way, this cable tends to get “Disconnected” with the slightest movement of my almost 4yr old Nokia 6101.  Make sure you are not using the phone and the phone is in standby mode.  The phone MUST NOT be in “Contacts” or some other menu available in the phone otherwise it will not connect to Nokia PC Suite… STANDBY MODE please… I am sure I frustrated myself unintentionally by not paying attention to this detail.
Right, NOW you click on OK (the green check mark) … assuming everything else was done properly, after about 10 seconds, the model no. of your phone should appear in Nokia PC Suite.  If you get this, you are going to have a blast with this software.
So cool – using my PC….. I have since been able to delete off a lot of junk (from inbox, outbox, images etc) and free up valuable memory, amend Contacts info, do a full backup of my phone onto my PC, load in a truncated MP3 file of Doobie Brothers, "China Grove" as my ringtone (...made it myself with a free MP3 editor - 1st 30 seconds – 433Kb… yeah huge… but worth it) etc…
Still getting the hang of this software…. The only digital camera I have is the one on my phone, so now that I can take pics and get them into my PC so easily, I am going to have a lot of fun with this software as well as with other aspects of it that I am not aware of yet..  I still have to install some kind of “Modem” drivers from the CD, and there is something about upgrading your phone software…..
It has only been three days since I got it to work but, folks..  This Nokia PC Suite is outraaaaaageous.  !!!!!!!!
Oh I forgot…. Now you can restart your computer.
PS.. Whenever I restart/shutdown my system, I have to go and do the COM1 to COM3 part again in Nokia PC Suite when I turn it back on.  I have not found a way to save the setting.  Will try to attach a pic (yep….  taken with my phone, and downloaded into my PC !!!) of the CA-42 cable and CD that I got.
    Hope this helps..
The "Add Attachments" button below is not giving me any feedback.... some help please ?

  • Send/Receive Text Msgs with Nokia 6230i and MacBook

I was told that it is possible to pair some bluetooth enabled mobile phones with the MacBook and to send/receive text messages. When a message is sent to the phone, it shows up on the Mac. The user can then reply from the Mac and it gets sent to the receipient's phone. Does anyone know how to do this? Is there a different application to facilitate this?

You do it in the Apple Address Book application.

  • Problem with Nokia 5200 and Flash Lite themes...

My problem is pretty simple to ask, but maybe not to easy to answer...
I downloaded many Flash Lite themes for my Nokia 5200, and my problem is that the animated icons for the grid (that are SWF files) don't show/animate.
Is it supposed to be like that?
    The firmware is v5.53

    Oh, I forgot this...
In Carbide.ui, the icons DO animate as they should.

  • Nokia 700 and Belle FP1 (Product Code 059L5V1)

My unlocked Nokia 700 (Product Code 059L5V1) never got the Belle FP1 upgrade, and so far hasn't got FP2 several months on from release. Can someone from Nokia advise -
    1. Why not - it's unlocked, and so far I've used it on both O2 and Vodafone Contracts
    2. It's a UK model to my knowledge
    3. When am I likely to get it / how can I get it.
I was fobbed off with FP1 and so far all requests to Nokia have again been fobbed off with a combination of "it's your network provider" or "it will be soon" - this was months ago. Now that there are no longer any (to my knowledge) Service Centre's in the UK that isn't an option either.
I've always been a loyal Nokia customer - but this is really starting to annoy me now (and the lack of support on this matter from Nokia).
Please can one of the Nokia mods / employees look into this and advise what is going on here ?

    hi mate,
sorry to hear your frustration. the way it works is that your phone has a product code. now, if your phone is a branded handset (e.g. Vodafone with all their custom wallpapers and apps), then you need to get in touch with them regarding availability of the update. it may be the case that they have not approved the update, even though Nokia has contacted them and said here you can have it.
in the other case, your phone is a country variant (which is what it sounds like to me), and is dependent on your region's Nokia Care approving the update and making their own customisations to it. it happens sometimes, but the regional Nokia doesn't approve the update, and therefore it is never released to the end user. this is an unbranded handset. therefore, unbranded is different to having an unlocked phone. you will need to persist with your Nokia Care in this case regarding the update: http://nokia.com/support
You know I've heard those lines so many times it's beginning to sound like cut-and-paste.
The fact that he mentioned PRODUCT CODE in the subject line is a fair indication that he knows that his phone has a PRODUCT CODE.
My 059L5V1 is a country variant which was both unbranded and unlocked.  It now has the 059G2D1 generic EU FP2 firmware on it.  I'm not allowed to say how I achieved this, or I'll get banned.
If it wasn't for the fact my 808 is so good I would have given up on Nokia by now.

  • Disappointed by nokia product and support

Nokia you cheated me. I bought c6-00 14000 INR. But not worthy to what I paid. Due to this customer dissatisfaction you lost global market share. You strong in hardware but failed in os innovation. I don't known what is obstructing you from taking decision.
Now I afraid to buy your most high ends phone lumia 920 after I got bad and difficult experience by using nokia c6.
Already one of my friend has been facing glitches using lumia 610.
Correct your organization else you would loose your place in the market.
If you found any mistake in this message, it due your phone only.
I have been cheated by you

You can't really base your experience with the C6-00 and the 920. The two have completely different OS's. WP8 on the 920 is a great experience and I'm sure you'd like it if you gave it a try.

  • I am VERY disappointed with Verizon FIOS and service

I was a contented Comcast customer for years.  Then FIOS came around with "an offer I couldn't refuse".  Now it turns out I should have.  In the past few months there have been two major problems with On Demand.  First, all the HD programs On Demand disappear for months.  Now, On Demand will not save my place.  If I exit a program/movie or if I pause it and it times out, I have to start from the beginning.  A real pain if I'm an hour into something.  I called and was told they knew about it and it would probably be fixed the next time an update was applies which was "every few months".
What the heck!  No wonder it took so long for the HD to come back.  They only do updates every few months, even if there's a major problem.
Add to this the fact that I have to wait on hold ten to fifteen minutes any time I call for support.  This NEVER happened to me with Comcast.
    I really am disappointed.

I agree ... their customer service has gone down the toilet to boot. Have you found an email address for customer service(?) as their live chat to india is useless. I often wonder if they money they save is equal to the customers they lose?? every email & text update i get from them is also in spanish which is like salt to my wounds...

  • Disappointed with Nokia WH-701 headphones

This is constructive feedback I hope. Why did Nokia not design in a lock slider switch with the wh-701 headphones?  I was very pleased when I read about them, as I like always to support Nokia but their standard headphones with fixed earbuds size never fit me. The wh-701 have the soft earplug type and even come with three different size plug covers.
They sound fine, and work fine except why no lock switch?  I use them to listen to the radio or music at work and to take calls - but with no lock switch every time the headset is bumped one key or another is activated. So the track changes, or the radio station changes - very annoying. They really should have had included a simple lock switch like the HS-45 unit IMHO. So I will go back to using that with my Etymotics ...

Hi, have you looked on the side of the remote controll ? There is a lillle slider switch which locks the controls, if you look at it and can see a little red square it is locked, slide it the other way and buttons should work, if they don't the headphone control is faulty. As already mentioned the 3.5 jack must be fully pushed home.
    Good Luck

  • Disappointed with Nokia Music service

I paid $170 for Nokia Music credit in June 2008.
I bought about $100 worth of music, but had a lot of trouble getting it to work.
After numerous service calls and emails, multiple PC and handset software updates, multiple backups and memory card formats, tweaking every conceivable mode and setting, and still no functioning music, I finally gave up in March 2009 and requested a refund. Nokia Music refused.
Since then I have repeatedly requested a refund or a fix for my problems.
In June 2009 my unused credit expired. I requested an extension of my unused credit, as per the user agreement, but they never responded.
Last month Nokia Music apparently decided that they had to cut off contact with me. Suddenly, mysteriously, the rights for my songs all expired at once. They said that they would no longer provide support as my song rights had all expired. They no longer respond to my emails.
So I’m very unhappy with the service. I have no playable music. I have lost unused credit that I was unable to spend. I have run up considerable phone bills on hold with the Careline. Most importantly I have wasted many, many hours over the last 18 months trying to get the music to work.
I've also bought songs from iTunes Plus and they worked first time, every time, on both my PC and Nokia handset. Currently I'm saving for an iPhone.

Well I called Dell and got my answer---They diagnose it over the phone if it can't be repaired that way then they ship a new monitor out and then ship the defective monitor back. This works for me. I'm going to call Apple now and demand a new monitor. If not I'll buy the Dell and sell the ACD on ebay or something.
