Disaster Recovery - Is Time Machine An Option?
I've been enjoying Time Machine quite a bit on Leopard. Before upgrading to Leopard. My question is, can Time Machine be used as a disaster recovery program? What I mean is, if my internal hard drive dies, can Time Machine be used to recover the hard drive? If not, I'll be installing Retrospect again.
Thanks,
Bryan

I am having sporadic issues after new hard drive install and recovery using Time Machine. The same sluggish response, start up screen pixelating...If I reinstall Lion will it wipe out other applications? My HD was formatted and partitioned correctly, I have a late 2009 iMac.
Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps. -
Safari quits unexpetedly on startup after having to do a "Recovery" from Time Machine backup
I had to do a "recovery" from Time Machine backup and since Safari will quit unexpectedly every time and I have to use Firefox.
The must do "recovery" came about because the system was hanging with the gearbox spinning and never starting up the system.
My system is: Mac Pro early 2008 running on OS X 10.9.4. Before the permanent hangs system as running very, very slow.
Any suggestions out there?Hope this is what you wanted to see:

How can I fix repetitive 'fontd' crashes after recovery from time machine backup?
After recovery from time machine backup (Disk Utility told me to reformat my internal hard drive) i got annoying repetitive prompts from crashing 'fontd'. How can I fix it? Anyone suffering from the same disease?
Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions. -
Recently my MacBookPro locked up on startup. Could not get past a certain point of progress bar. I had upgraded to Yosemite few weeks back, with no issues. I ended up doing a Recovery with Time Machine and I got all my apps, photos, documents, etc. back okay --- except I got error messages that my "registration for Photoshop (I use CS4 Extended) and Photo Mechanic are no longer working". I worked on Photoshop first, and tried (several times) to fix it with their online help suggestions. Nothing worked.
Is there a simpler way to "get my licenses/registrations back"??? I am also going to contact Camera Bits about the Photo Mechanic issues. ThanksSame problem and for months now. I haven't been able to find a solution, but I suspect that's because I don't know exactly what's wrong.

Anyone know what this is about?
I'm running OS X on a 2.7GHz i5 with 16GB of RAM on a iMac platform.
I've tried to re-instal OS X, but that didn't help me at all. It didn't even change the error message.
Thanks for the help apple community - Take care.Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
Can't log in after recovery from time machine
We had to replace the disk on my daughter's MacBook Pro. We restored her data from Time Machine on an external drive. After completion the system brought up the login screen. In addition to her account, there's one for me and one for my wife. All of them appeared but none of our passwords work. The password hints are correct, but we can't log in. Help!
First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why the password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. You can select one of the available layouts by choosing from the flag menu in the upper right corner, if it's showing, or cycle through them by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See also this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. In OS X 10.10 and later, this option also works with FileVault, but only if you enabled it when you activated FileVault. It's not retroactive.
Otherwise*, start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is active.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but the Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as the login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions. -
Faces thumbnails missing after recovery from time machine
I got a new harddisk in my iMac via Apple's harddisk replacement program. I recovered all my data via a Time Machine backup (from a Time Capsule). All seemed fine after recovery of backup. When firing up iPhoto after the recovery iPhoto asks for updating all the thumbnails (don't know why). After a while everything seems fine - all photos are available with thumbnails in the events view. However all Faces thumbnails are missing - all persons in the faces view are black boxes. I can see that all the faces tagging are intact - when clicking a person I can see all the tagged images as black boxes. When switching the little "Faces - Photos" control to "Photos" I can see the photos containing all the tagged persons all right. I seems like it's only the face thumbnails that are missing.
So far I have tried the following without succes:
Repaired the iPhoto database with iPhotos own tool (holding Command and Option down when starting iPhoto)
Updating the entire library from an earlier backup
Updated the faces database files from an earlier backup as explained in this post
I'm out of good ideas now - can anyone help?Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

System recovery from time machine after disk crash
Hi there,
recently I am a little unluky with my backup strategy. Here is my latest issue - I am glad if anyone has hints or advice.
On my macbook pro (mid 2009, originally SL) updated till the latest version of Mavericks I recently had a hard disc crash. I replaced the hard drive and wanted to restore my system (and data) from my time machine backup. This Backup is encrypted (in case this gives a hint for something).
What I did is I insert the Snow leopard disk, boot from it and first formated the new HD to the suggested standard for intel based MACs and then chose the option to restore from a time machine backup. I found the time capsule, connected with password, found the backed up files with date and tried to install.
First attemp failed.
Second attemp succed after 10h
Then with the mandatory reboot the system didn't start but stopped with:
panic(cpu 1 caller...
So I decided to install the SL system and try to restore from there in whatever way. Did that and 1 hour later the installation was successfully - Reboot - and then the computer asked for my Log in data (with my Log in Name - which I so far did not set on this installation or on this disk - very suprised. More suprised my password (which I use for 4 years now) did not work.
so back to option 1 try to restore from Time machine.
Ahead of that I reset the PRAM . Now I choose a backup version of an earlier date. This time the installation couldn't be finished but I got the log file.
I couldn't attach the file and didn't want to post it over severl pages...(is there a good way for that, only found adding pictures?)
Well - that's where I am stuck...
Any help is apreciated very much.Thank you Eric for your fast answer.
this worked and now I have a running SL system. I guess I try to install maverics first and then use the emigration assistent to recover my data.
Still its a pitty that the time machine backup didn't do what it was supposed to. The workarround is very timeconsuming and leaves some concerns about my data and the future safety of time machine backups.

Audio back-up software... Is Time machine an option?
Here's what's up...
I'm currently installing and re-authorizing everything under the sun, on my new 8 core mac.
One bit of software that I really made a lot of use of was LaCie's Silver keeper. It allowed me to keep a "list" of the 20 songs I was currently working on. You first designated a back-up location, and then proceeded to back up the song folder.
Then, from that point on, you simply selected the song title from the list, and hit "Go", and any changes made since that initial back-up were backed up as well. It went REALLy fast, because only the changes made from the last back-up were updated, so no redundant data was copied again.
I much prefer this method than backing up an entire drive, even if only recent changes are reflected. It still takes more time than I may have between songs, with clients in the studio.
All that to say, Silver Keeper is not Leopard compatible, and I certainly can't wait for it to be.
Does Time Machine allow you to designate specific folders within a hard drive? And can it access multiple hard drives, say, one for a complete system back-up, and another for daily or hourly audio back-ups?
Or is something like Retrospect a better choice for how I prefer to back-up my song files?
Just looking at new options...I have SilverKeeper v1.1.4 and it works fine on 10.5.4.
I have a 160MB internal HD in my laptop.
I have a 500MB Lacie external FW drive which I have partitioned into music and internal HD backup.
On the Lacie Music partition I keep my Logic Projects
On the internal HD I keep all my programs/Loops/SW instruments
I have a 60MB external FW drive which I use to backup my Lacie external Music partition using SilverKeeper
I use Time Machine to backup my HD internal drive to the Lacie
Time Machine seems pretty "brute force" from what I can tell. Unlike SilverKeeper I can't find the sort of flexible options that SilverKeeper provides. But you should have no problem continuing to use SilverKeeper.
Good Luck -
Disk Repair reported that it could not repair the HD Disk. I am to reformat the disk and restore backed up files. OSX Utilities give me a choice of restoring from time machine backup (which I have on MyPassport) but no information on reformatting the disk, which I assume I have to do first. How do I reformat the HD ...or does the restore from Time Machine do both things?
Boot OS X Recovery and use Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility reported the disk cannot be repaired though, you should replace it with a new one. -
Recovery using time machine impossible. No permission !
I'd like to recover one application from the hard disk where I save regularly my files / applications using time machine.
Result is : you do not have the permission. Recovery is impossible.
What to do ?
Help - Thanks
MarcDo you have more than one user account?
If so, try doing the restore from a different one.
If not, there are some items even an Admin user doesn't have permission to. They're mostly system files, but it's possible some applications are protected, too.
What apps or files are you having trouble with? -
Help with Recovery and Time machine
So a friend of mine sent me her laptop to change hard drives. She also sent her Time machine external HDD. I used her drive as a recovery disc using the Lion recovery tool. I didnt see or didnt read any where that stated the drive would be unusable afterwards. But after restoring OSX and moving her data back from the old drive I cant seem to get the Time Machine disc contents. So im trying to get the data from the drive without completely wiping it.
Any suggestions?
She has 13 (black)book late 2007
running 10.7.4You should not restore a Time Machine backup from one Mac to another one, especially a new one.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. -
Recovery with time machine needs over 1000 hours
I have a Macbook Air (Mid 2011, 128 GB SSD, 4GB RAM, Mountain Lion) and I wanted to recover the OS for testing purposes from my external hraddrive (500GB USB Gdrive). Now the recovery has started and it shows me a remaining time of more than 1000 hours. The value still increases. There was no need for recovery, I only wanted to check the functionality. backups were running without problems. Whats wrong now? Any suggestions?
I'm sorry I have no idea what you're asking; I don't know what you mean by 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? I bought the hard drive specifically for use with this Mac; I plugged it in & copied across around 58MB of files from the Mac hard drive with no problem; I did it in small parts but the total thing only took a few hours. I was then advised to do this 'total back-up', which is now taking several days to only back up 59MB. Why is life so complicatd with Macs?! I'm used to just plugging things in & they work, no fuss or bother.
I really would like to stop it now; but need some advice as to whether what has already been copied across over the past 28 hours will actually be on the HD, or will I have to start all over again? Second question; clearly it is easier to just drag & drop files across to the HD - this Time Machine thing is useless - but I am not totally sure which files it is copying. Would I just copy everything from 'My computer' / applications, etc? -
TIme Machine not Option when trying to Re-BUild HD!
HD courupted. I had to re-install from Tiger disks then to Leopard. The Archive install was not an option. Nor was TIme Machine. I installed as a new install. Fine. But I am still unable to rebuild the HD from Time Machine. App by App - sure. But it takes forever. What can I do? Biggest issue is the iPhoto Library.
moxieman,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm sorry it had to be under these circumstances. You don't give us much to go on.
HD courupted. I had to re-install from Tiger disks then to Leopard.
Why did you do it this way? Why not from Leopard disks? After all how did you go from Tiger to Leopard without the DVD?
The Archive install was not an option.
Well, it wouldn't be if you were trying to install Tiger on top of a Leopard install. On the other hand this KB article may explain it:
Nor was TIme Machine.
It wouldn't be if you were installing Tiger. Time Machine is incompatible with Tiger.
I installed as a new install. Fine.
Which OS? Tiger or Leopard?
But I am still unable to rebuild the HD from Time Machine. App by App - sure. But it takes forever. What can I do? Biggest issue is the iPhoto Library.
Now that you have the Mac OS X installed (Tiger? Leopard? Not sure), have you tried launching Migration Assistant in Leopard - that should see your Time Machine backups.
Cheers!
