Disater recovery dought

Hi
i am planning to do a disaster recovery test.I tested with until time.I want to test until scn.eg if i took controlfile backup at 6.00pm then i
can recover upto that point if i have the archive logs. How can i determine the SCN for giving
recover database until change SCN using backup controlfile. How can i get the last scn till that able to recovery.
One more dought at what scenario the cancel based recovery will use.Is it loosing the current online redologs?

The Stateless failover is used when the primary network edge platform fails, IPsec sessions can failover and reconnect to the backup network edge platform, thus minimizing connection downtime.

    Hi All,
    Happy New year 2014 ....
we have running with exchange 2010 R1 with DAG enabled. we have below mentioned setup in our exchange server.
    Main site.
Active directory server ( Primary DC, additional DC in our main site)  installed in Hyper V  host. installed exchange 2010 mail box role in another Hyper V host.  installed the CAS& Hub role in another virtual host and installed the Exchange
edge role in another physical server.
    DR Site
Active director server( ADC) installed in Hyper V host. installed the Exchange 2010 mailbox,Hub,Cas server role in a physical server. installed the Edge Server in another physical server.
At present we have enabled the failover DAG  for both our Mail box servers and its working perfectly when the primay mail box server down. we have run some commands to transfer all my exchange 2010  to point through our DR Site. so its take
some of the minutes of down time happened in our mail flow.  we are planning to avoid that downtime. we  are find for the solutions like  if the primary site down  the DR will need to automatically up. it will be appreciate that any
one  provide your suggestion to achieve this without affecting the  our current setup.

  • Active Directory Operation on Disater Recovery Drill

    Hye everybody,
Need some advice from you guys, i'll have to be ready for the DR Drill in upcoming week, my concern is this scenario, if we have a PDC in HQ, DC (GC) some branchs, and also DC (GC) in DR site. So when we do the DR operation where we disconnect the network
line in HQ and we swing all system apps including AD. it also involve the branch network that will pointing to DR site.
The testing that we have to do in DR Drill is such user authnetication, join domain session, replication, GPO and also make sure all the test are success or we get scold.. 8)
So what is the best practice from microsoft site or old timer here on what i should do to make this AD operation at DR is succcesfully working like normal.
Hope i'llvhave some input from you guys, thanks..

    Hello,
for the branch office, make sure that you have at least one DC / DNS / GC server. When a disaster occur on the HQ then you have to change the IP configuration settings of the client computers in the Branch Office so that they will point to this DC as a primary
DNS server. Like that, all should be okay with domain authentication, group policy applicance ...
Now, for FSMO roles, if you don't resize them then you will get problems like
You are unable to perform changes on AD schema
    Time Sync problems
If the HQ DCs are unrecoverable then I recommend proceeding by resizing FSMO roles on DCs of the Branch Office. If not, you can:
Wait until these DCs are back
Resize FSMO roles and when the DCs of HQ will be back then force their demotion using
dcpromo /forceremoval. Note that if resized, DCs of HQ should never be online before demotion
Also, after these changes, you have to make sure that there is at least two DC / DNS / GC servers in the branch office. If not, add a new one. Like that, you will reduce risks of losing your domain.
Before a disaster appear, you have to make sure that AD replication is made correctly.

  • Disater recovery for AS.

    Hi All,
We want to implement DR for oracle Application Server 10g *(10.1.2.0.2)* and OS is windows server 2003.
We have Infrastructure and Business Intelligence on one machine only. We are using forms & reports services of Business Intelligence. Please provide some easy steps to implement DR which is understandable.
IS there any liscence require to implement DR for AS?
    Thanks in advance....

  • VWLC serial number can change if using disaster recovery.

I know this was published before but I cannot find it at the moment so I will republish.
If  a person is running DRS for VMWare or any type of disater recovery  solution that moves the vWLC to another host, the serial number of the  vWLC will change. Since our SN is node-locked to the UUID in VMWare, if  the UUID changes, the UDI (and serial number) of the controller will  also change. The only way to avoid this from happening is to maintain  the UUID in VMware .
Here are a couple of VMWare KB articles:
Changing or keeping a UUID for a moved virtual machine (1541)

    EDIT:
    https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCun11124
    https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCun11108
Both bugs now fixed as of wlc release 8.0.100.

On the line w/ Cisco Licensing right now.  VMotioned my vWLC running 7.6.100.0 to another node in the ESXI cluster.  After I had rebooted, poof... all licensing was missing.   Luckily we should have the license keys rehosted here shortly so I can get my APs back online.
I don't see version 8.0.115.0 listed as a version with the known fixes, just the 8.0(100.0), and 8.0(72.160).   Can anyone confirm the bug is fixed in 8.0(115.0) as well please?  I would prefer not to vMotion again and repeat this entire licensing exercise if unnecessary.   ;)  Thanks for the posting!

  • Recovering Archivedlogs on a disaster recovery site

    DBA's need you help.
I have oracle 9i standard edition, management has asked to develop disater recovery solution without adding any extra cost(ie no tools to be bought). I am doing some research with RMAN to do this. I have programs to move the archived logs from production to disaster site.
I have my disaster database in sink with my production till yesterday's full backup. Now today evening i just want to apply the todays archivedlogs backed up from production site. Is it possible to do this and how? Remember i will not restore the entire backup and then do the recovery. One more point i also have control file backup for today.
    Your responses are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Amit

    hi,
i believe it is not possible to recover your db by applying the archivelog to disaster site.when you restore your db from the previous backups then it becomes a seperate db,now consider the situtaion on your production db ...
users are making changes to prod server and this causes lots of arhivelogs to be generated on prod server, now the ctlfile of prod db knows the name and location of archivelogs,And if you perform rcovery on prod site then it is ok,but if you want to recover your disaster db by using these logs then the disaster site ctlfile dosen't know about the location and name of the archivelogs which was generated on prod site.because both db's ctl file is out syncronisation.
now if you only concerned bout the changes to be made on disaster site then you have an option of creating matrilized views on disaster site and keep syncronise it with prod db.
in your scenario you need to create a standy db to accomplish your tasks, but as you have standerd edition then it is also not possible to create a standby db.but i believe there must be some alternate ways to achieve this in your existing standerd edition just use google to make it true.

  • Disaster Recovery Test

    Hi,
Can anybody please guide, who'll play the major role in "Disaster Recovery Test"
like functional / basis / abap etc,,,

    Hello Mahesh
Everybody has to play a major role , first Basis has to take action then abaper and then for testing Functional people required to put their effort.here is brief excerpt from an article regarding "Disaster recovery for SAP".
It will give all of us an idea about Disater recovery.
When you have your SAP system installed, you don't have a disaster recovery solution.
"SAP has standard methodologies for doing backups and restoring the SAP environment, but there's nothing built into their application that specifically targets disaster recovery,"
In other words, SAP tells you very explicitly what you need to protect, but you're on your own in figuring out how to make it happen. It is common practice among third-party solution providers to ask about disaster recovery, but if you're doing your own thing it is important to be aware of the need for a disaster recovery solution.
Outsourcing vs. building a secondary site:
There are two ways to go about setting up your disaster recovery solution: Outsource or build your own secondary site. Outsourcing may be more convenient and less expensive, especially for smaller companies on a tight budget. Simply approach the outsourcing company with your needs, and they will pretty much take it from there. Graap likens it to an insurance policy, where you pay a premium on an ongoing basis for the security.
If you decide to outsource, ask colleagues for recommendations and spend some time researching prices, which can vary a lot. But make sure the outsourcer can step up to the plate in the unlikely event that you need their services.
Building your own secondary site requires a larger investment up front but the leaves you in full control of your contingency plans rather than be at the mercy of an outsourcing company. If your outsourcing provider falls through for some reason -- such as being in the same disaster zone as your main office during an earthquake for example -- you're in trouble. When building your own site, you can prepare for more scenarios and place it far enough away from your main office.
    High availability vs. cost:
Specialists say one of the most important questions to consider is availability and how quickly you need to get your systems back online. The difference between getting back online in 10 minutes or three days could be millions of dollars, so you want to make sure you get just the right solution for your company.
Around-the-clock availability will require mirroring content across two sites in real-time. This enables you to do an instant failover with little or no downtime, rather than force you to physically move from the office to a backup site with a stack of tapes.
Regardless of whether you outsource or set up your own site, a high availability solution is expensive.
"But if that is what it takes to keep your business from going under, it's worth every penny of it".
An added benefit of having a high availability solution is that you can avoid maintenance downtime by working on one server while letting the other handle all traffic. In theory, this leaves a window of risk, but most maintenance tasks, such as backups, can be cancelled if need be.
One consideration for mirroring data is the bandwidth to the secondary site. Replicating data in real-time requires enough capacity to handle it without hitches. Also, a secondary site will require the same disk space as your regular servers. You can probably get away with a smaller and cheaper system, but you still need enough storage space to match your primary servers.
Whatever the choice for disaster recovery, it is vital that both the technology and the business departments know about the plan ahead of time.
    Testing your solution:
Ok, so you have a disaster recovery solution in place. Great, you're home free, right? Not quite. It must be tested continuously it to make sure it works in real life. Sometimes management can be reluctant to spend the money for a real test, or perhaps there are pressing deadlines to keep but it should be tested one or two times a year.
Many people who build good plans let them sit collecting dust for years, at which point half the key people in the plan have left or changed positions.Update the names, phone numbers and other vital information frequently and test them, he said. It is for the same reason you do fire drills: When the real thing strikes, there's no room for error.
In testing, consider different scenarios and the physical steps needed to get the data center up and running. For example, many disaster recovery solutions require at least parts of a staff to get on a plane and physically move to the secondary location. But September 11 showed how that is not easy when all planes are grounded.
    Costly but vital:
Disaster recovery is not cheap, and it requires lots of testing to stay current, but it could save your critical data.
"Any customer who makes an investment in SAP is purchasing an enterprise-class application, and as such really should have this level of protection for their business". "I can't imagine why anybody would not have an interest in disaster recovery."

    Yogesh

  • Installing two OBIEE instances on One RCU Schemas

    Hello ,
    I need some help.
I am planning to install Database(DB1) on one machine and OBIEE(OB1) on the other machine and OBIEE 2(OB2) will be my back up machine for disater recovery.
First i will install OB1 by using the DB1 and that works fine.
now i can i use the same DB1 for installing OB2.?
if not please suggest me a way to make this work.
    Please help me out
    Thanks.

    Hello,
While it is possible to share the MDS schema,
you have to create one BIPLATORM schema for each instance you install !

Try to see this in Disater Recovery System Admin Guide
    System Requirements
To back up data to a remote device on the network, you must have an SFTP  server that is configured. Cisco allows you to use any SFTP server  product but recommends SFTP products that have been certified with Cisco  through the Cisco Technology Developer Partner program (CTDP). CTDP  partners, such as GlobalSCAPE, certify their products with specified  version of Cisco Unified Communications Manager. For information on  which vendors have certified their products with your version of Cisco  Unified Communications Manager, refer to the following URL:
    http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/ctdp/Search.pl
For information on using GlobalSCAPE with supported Cisco Unified Communications versions, refer to the following URL:
    http://www.globalscape.com/gsftps/cisco.aspx
Cisco uses the following servers for internal testing. You may use one  of the servers, but you must contact the vendor for support:
    •Open SSH (refer to http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/)
    •Cygwin (refer to http://www.cygwin.com/)
    •Titan (refer to http://www.titanftp.com/)

  • Lync 2013 - Number of FE servers in paired pools

    Hi,
We have an Ent. Edition Lync 2013 pool with 4 FE servers, we would like to implement a second pool at a different location for disater recovery.
Does the DR pool which will be paired with production one need to have exactly the same number of FE servers or can it have less (i.e. 3) ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Luca

You can have 1, or 3, or whatever number, it just has to be Enterprise to match Enterprise, you can't use Standard Edition with Enterprise for example.
    Per: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204697.aspx
"Each pool in a pair should have the capacity to serve all users from both pools in the event of a disaster."
That's not a statement on the number of servers, just the capacity to do what you need to do if you fail.  It's sort of an obvious statement that speaks to load sharing among pools.  Don't max out two pools and expect to be able to fail over to
one and run at full capacity.
In a DR situation, you may not need full capacity, so the amount of resources you'll be giving it will be based upon your own internal best practices.
Edit: And finally, yes I've done exactly what you're asking, it's fine.

  • OSX based back-up strategies

Having suffered a catasprohic disc failure and spending a few weeks recovering from it, I have leanred more than ever wanted to about diskutil. raid 1, time machines and hard disk encryption.
The disk unit that failed was a WD MYBook 3TB. While the disk itself was fine, the added PC board overheated and failed (apparently a common problem) on this unit. Unknown to me, was that the data was encryted at the hardware level.
Although the data was intact, the only way to get past the hardware/firmware encypton was to track down a similar sacrificial drive and replace the board. A generic case recognized the disk but not the data. It is important to note that buying a sacrifical news WD Mybook, will probably only work if the same model (and possibly reverision number) of the failed PC Board is used. That problem was solved with a ebay purchase - good luck, not great planning.
    Lessons learned
    - Hard disk firmware encyption brings new challnges. There is a reasonable chance your exterbal USB drive is encryted)
    - Include an evaluation of the manufacture's recovery tools in your puchasing decision
    - Diskutil can take days to expand an existong partition with data. If you need to expand a parition, back-up the data and start fresh
    - Raid 1 (mirroring) writes take approxiamaley 3 times as long as writing to a single disk. It works but for me it is mot worth the transaction cost)
    - Duplicate Time Machine back-ups cannot be done with a simple file copy.  Te trick is to shut off timemachine
    The new startegy
    Back-up
Frequently accessed and modified data. (500 gb Internal Drive)
    - Time machine back-up to partitions on two physical drives. TimeMachine alternates back-ups.
Infrequently Modified Data (2 3TB External Drives). (music, photos, and archived files)
    - Create an initial copy on a second drive and rsync daily. Still experimenting with best option and automation (Likley will use crontab to run a script)
Disaster Plan (1 3TB Drive Stored offsite)
    - Rotate redundant Drive2 with a Drive3) on a monthly or when otherwise warranted (Stil sorting out how best to do this with time machine)
    - verfiy and repair disks on a monthly basis.
    - Store documents and essential files on Dropbox and GoogleDrive daily. Working on a background script to automate the copy process of all saved files)
I have tested the subsitition of the external drive 3 for drive 2 and the removed Drive 1. On the to-do list is to create a bootable recovery disk to make recovery from an internal drive failure easier. The as yet, unaddressed huge hole is data security.
Any suggestions on how to improve my backup and disater recovery plan would be appreciated,  Of particuliar intertest is proven methods to protect sensitve data.
    Thanks,

You need at least two complete, independent backups of all data, at least one of which is off site at all times. Don't rely exclusively on any one backup method, such as Time Machine. Encrypt your backups for security, but make sure it's impossible to forget the password(s). Think about what it would take to recover your data if your home or office, or both, burned to the ground.
