Disc burner or software not found - trying to burn to internal combo drive
For whatever reason, my wife "Software Update"-installed 10.4.11 and iTunes 7.5 on her aging 800MHz iBook.
Now, as she goes to burn CDs in iTunes, she gets the message "disc burner or software not found"
The mechanism is the stock, internal Combo Drive, and IS seen by the advanced preferences in iTunes, as well as when making a "burn folder" in the finder.
I have repaired permissions as an earlier thread suggested, and even downloaded and reinstalled iTunes 7.5 (and re-repaired permissions), but it's not helping.
???
thanks, but rebooting/restarting, even zapping PRAM didn't help here. (+repairing permissions etc as mentioned above)
Still stuck

Keep getting Disc Burner or software not found when trying to burn a CD
I am not able to burn a playlist to a CD and get an error at the top of Itunes window "Disc Burner or Software Not Found". I have been able to burn CDs in the past with this same computer but had some issues with songs in itunes. Support had me uninstall Itunes and reinstall. I have also uninstalled the device in the device manager and re-installed it. I really don't know what to try except to ask for help here. I would appreciate any direction I can get. I have a Dell desktop XPS running on Windows 8.
Hi daurel,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you receive the error "Disc Burner or Software Not Found" when trying to burn CDs. You mention that you've already tried removing and reinstalling iTunes, and other drivers, and these are good steps.
If the situation continues, be sure to try the tips in this article:

Disc burner or software not found error when trying to burn
everythime I try to burn I get the disc burner or software not found
Can anyone help PLEASEThat program has NOT worked for me. I was hoping - in fact it seemed to slow down i-tunes horribly loading and caused it to hang several times.
IN the past I had this problem and had to edit a configuration file. Everything was fine until I updated, and no matter what I can't seem to get it working again.
I've been doing this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300403
Or trying to - the file doesn't come up nice and neatly like they would have you think - it comes up all run together, word wrap or not.
After changing that line 10 thousand ways until Sunday, with a 0, with a zero, with a carriage return, with a pipe, with a space...nothing is working!
I constantly get a error on i-tunes starting, and it still ISN'T burning.
It would be really nice IF i-tunes would provide the correct file FOR the sony CRX160E drives.
Also, I can't seem to search in these forums, that would REALLY help. -

In iTunes 11.1.3.8 on my Windows 8 HP Laptop, when trying to "Burn Playlist to Disc", I get the Burn Settings window "E: hp DVD A DS8A9SH", then I select MP3 CD and click "Burn", I unfortunately get the dreaded iTunes "disc burner or software not found...". I think this is the second time this has happened (first time I think a simple reboot fixed it), and I assume because iTunes was updated this issue came back again and I cannot burn MP3 cds anymore because of it!
I've followed all steps outlined in this support article "iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install" (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2308)
Solution 1, no updated firmware was available for dvd drive.
Solution 2, not relevant because those files were not present when I looked for them.
Solution 3, I'm familiar with regedit and did exactly what the step by step instructions told me including rebooting multiple times to completely remove Gear drivers/keys, installing the new Gear driver files with their official setup file "For 32-bit and 64-bit systems:" from http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php (and gave another reboot just in case) and opened iTunes at the very end of the entire process.
Still getting the dreaded "disc burner or software not found..." error when trying to burn a playlist to a CD. The weird thing is when I click Burn playlist to a CD, I see the DVD drive "E: in the next prompt which asks for Data CD/MP3 CD, Audio CD.
So I clicked on Help > Run Diagnostics, selected "CD/DVD Drive tests" only and clicked "Next".
Window says "To begin the test, please insert a prerecorded audio cd..." so I did that and clicked "Next".
Under "Choose an optical drive to test:", the drop-down menu only shows "[Choose a Drive]", no other options. Under "Optical drive:" it says "No drive chosen for testing.", and I click the "Next" button.
Here are the diagnostics output I got:
Microsoft Windows 8 x64 Home Premium Edition (Build 9200)

I'm extremely confused as to what to do next. I was thinking I should try reinstalling iTunes but I'm not sure that would even work and I'm so paranoid about installing it correctly and referencing the right existing library files that I'd like to see other suggestions first.
Any help from the community or Apple would be tremendously appreciated and I would be glad to do more testing and provide more details. Thanks!Hi there aaxim,
