Disc drive does not recognize CDs

Hi,
I have a 17" iMac G4 1.25ghz, 512mb memory, Mac OS 10.5.1, and it does not recognize CDs anymore. I can burn and read DVDs, but I can't read CDs. I don't know if I can burn a CD because it can never recognize the blank media. My system profiler reads:
Sony DVD-RW DW-U10A:
Firmware Revision: A43h
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 8192 KV
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Write STrategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert Media and refresh to show available burn speeds
It is not only blank CDs it doesn't recognize, it is any CD. It can't read a media CD, it can't read the Microsoft Office CD, or any other CD. When I put in a CD, I hear some grinding noise, then a little whirring, but never a normal sound, like when I put a DVD in. I'm not sure, but I think Leopard messed it up.
Is anyone else having this problem? Please help me. I really want this computer to work - it is my secondary computer, and I don't want to have to install software to it by using my new iMac, or iBook, and put this computer into target disc mode.

The PRAM basically memory on your motherboard, powered by a battery that retain your settings while your computer is turned off or unplugged from the wall. You can find how to reset it here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
You should not need to reset the smc, it was an extra step I took because I have done it with my intel iMac (I'm not sure if it does anything for the iMac G4). However, to reset it (if it does anything) you simply unplug your computer from the wall and wait about a minute, then plug it back in.
Hope this helps

  • DVD drive does not recognize my Windows 7 disc

I'm using a macbook pro purchased September 2009.
I purchased Windows 7 home premium full version and when I insert the installation disc, both 32 and 64 bit versions, the DVD drive on the computer does not recognize the disc. It spits it back out. Anyone else having this problem?
My external dvd drive works fine. I tried going through the install process this way but when the computer restarts, I get a screen that says no bootable device, press any button to continue.
    Need some help please.

I am having the exact same problem! I currently am running Windows XP Pro in bootcamp and would like to use a Windows 7 Upgrade disk to upgrade my partition. (or clean install) But for some reason my Macbook Pro (also purchased recently) will not read the Upgrade DVD at all! I tied running it on startup, in Snow Leopard, and even in XP.
Out of desperation, I ran the disk on my iMac (that has not been updated to Snow Leopard yet) and it read the disk perfectly! I then began to question if my Macbook's disk drive was working properly. So I then ran a random CD and then a DVD on it and both read flawlessly!
Some people claim that they have fixed this problem simply by cleaning the Upgrade disk. This, however, did not work for me. There seems to be a trend with MacBooks having this trouble, but that could be completely coincidental! Apple has also announced that they will release an update that will officially provide support for Windows 7. Maybe this will provide a solution.
I'm about out of ideas so any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • My cd/dvd drive does not recognize/load cds

iMac 10.6.8 snow leopard with iTunes 11.0, purchased in 2008.
The cd will be accepted into the drive which will begin to turn/mount the disk followed by a few clicks after which the drive stops, tries again, tries a 3rd time and then ejects the cd.  Dvds do load but I have been experiencing "skipping over damaged area" msgs when there is no damage.  Resetting the SMC alleviates that problem for dvds but not the cd loading problem. Cds that have been accepted in the past do no load, even brand new cds.
I do play dvds and cds frequently but before I conclude that my drive is failing due to wear and tear, I wanted to know if there's a way to clean the drive, if that's the problem.  The drive does not accept a dvd/cd drive cleaning disk.
Any suggestions for further at-home diagnosis/refurbishing before I contact my local authorized repair person or buy a Superdrive to substitute for the malfunctioning drive?

None of the information you have provided answered my question regarding a way to clean/refurbish a drive which will not accept a dvd/cd cleaning disk.
You finally advised me to do what I had already done prior to posting.
Perhaps you have a reading comprehension problem.  Although the internal drives are generically referred to as superdrives, I only employed that term in my initial post when referring to purchasing an external drive to potentially be shared with a laptop.  So, the confusion is yours.
The link below gives simple yet comprehensive coverage of when, why and how to reset SCM/PRAM, which does not include my CD mounting issue, although it resolved the "skipping over damaged areas" problem I had prior to my original post regarding alternative ways to clean the internal drive.

The link below contains a discussion of failing dvd/cd drives for iMacs of the same vintage as mine with the similar mounting issues.  I had no success mounting a CD via a virtual XP environment, so it's more likely a hardware issue.

  • Satellite L50D-B - faulty DVD drive does not recognize disks

Bought 2 months ago. The drive does not accept CD's, DVD's or anything.
The name of the disk doesn't show up on the drive and if you double click on the DVD drive icon (while a disk is inserted) the tray opens up and says please insert a disk. I've tried many disks so they are not the issue.
So far I've taken it to tech support where I purchased it.
They said to do a reinstall so I did - with the full clean drive. I've tried updating the drivers but the computer insists that they are the latest. If I search for my model number on the Toshiba driver support site it gets rejected and I have no access to drivers (from Toshiba).
I checked out a few other forums and tried the regedit fix but that also did nothing. If no solution is found (and I've already wasted hours of my life on it) then this notebook is going to back for a refund and I'll get one that is going to perform the simple task of playing a DVD.

    Hi
Sorry to hear that you have such stupid problem with your machine. On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there.
In my opinion you should not waste your time checking and searching for some drivers that probably will not help at all.
Reinstall original operating system that you have got with your machine and test functionality with factory settings. If the result is the same contact your local dealer or Toshiba service provider directly and ask for help. They can check ODD and exchange it if necessary.

Hi there. count me in on the Sony DVD problems. My Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 will not recognize the Adobe Creative Suite 3 DVD for installation. The DVD works fine in other G4 systems.

After reading the boards, it sounds like the Pioneer DVR-112D 18X DVD Burner (Drive only) is the unit to buy and replace this Sony one.
There appears to be a spacer issue related to the door on the G5 Tower case. Will the spacers from the Sony unit work on the Pioneer unit, or can the Pioneer unit just be installed as is using the existing ribbon cable. I've read the PMG5OpticalDriveDIY.pdf replacement manual, but am confused about SuperDrives vs. the Pioneer DVR-112D.
Can anyone clarify the details of replacement?
Also, will I need new software (Roxio, Toast) to burn CD's and DVD's after replacing the drive?
    thanks, and best regards,

  • DVD drive does not recognize blank media

I have a Matshia DVD-RAM UJ-841S DVD drive, that will not recognize blank DVD media. This has been going on for a while now, so I don't know 'what has changed'. It will recognize/burn CD's, will play DVD's, but will not recognize blank DVD media. I have tried reinstalling the driver, tried different types of high quality media (Verbatim, Memorex etc). I have burned many DVD's in the past, this drive is (was) capable of doing it (despite what Microsofts FixIt programs says). I'm not terribly techy, so if it is a registry problem you'll have to explain it very carefully.
    Thanks,
    Rodney

I HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.  I CAN BURN TO MY COMPUTER - COPY A DVD - BUT CAN'T COPY TO A BLANK DISC AND HAVE TRIED ALL KINDS OF MUSIC DISC???

  • ITunes Does Not Recognize CDs

Using iTunes 7.0.1 on a G5 with OX 10.3.9. Whenever I put a CD into the drive, iTunes will not recognize the CD, but it DOES show up on the desktop.
Yes, I can drag the CD into iTunes if I want to import the CD, but I don't always want to import, just want to listen.
Yes, I have checked all of hte preferences and have chosen to "Show CD" upon insert.
Yes, I have done the same in my System Preferences (meaning, upon CD insert, open iTunes).
    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions, but yeah ... they are CDs. In fact, it's every CD I try, iTunes just doesn't recognize it. I'm on a server that blocks the iTunes store (work, does not allow streaming or downloads through Apple), so I figured that might be the problem when iTunes tries to access the database. However, I turned off the auto check function, and still no dice. Drives me crazy, because I just want to use iTunes as a player most of the time and don't want to import everything.
Oh yeah, I've also tried to re-install and remove & replace the shortcut from the dock ... nothing working.

  • Satellite A100-773: DVD/CD drive does not recognise CDs

    Hello Friends,
    I have Sattelite A100-773.
When I turned it on today it did not recognise any CDs anymore. It however recognises DVDs and also can Burn CDs with Nero.
As soon as I put in a CD it says (in German) something like "Access denied, Function not allowed".
It is a mystery to me what has happened. Until yesterday it was perfect. Now the same CDs (and I have tried 20) wouldn' work anymore.
I have tried system recovery to a previous point in time, but it does not help. In the Hardware manager tells me that everything is allright.
Do you have any idea what it can be?
    Thanks a lot
    Ognian

    Hi
In such case its not easy to say why it happens.
Generally if the drive is not able to read any medias either the hardware malfunctions or the CD or DVD is not compatible and supported.
But let us hope that the hardware is not corrupted.
Try to remove the drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook.
After the reboot the OS should recognise the drive again and should load the driver. Then you could try to test the drive again.
I found also a very great Microsoft document about:
How to troubleshoot issues that occur when you write data to a CD-R or CD-RW optical disc in Windows XP
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324129
    and this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315350/
The other possibility is to use the Recovery CD to reinstall the OS.

  • DVD drive does not recognize some media on Satellite A30-514

I own a Satellite A30-514 laptop with Microsoft xp OS. Just lately, some DVD's (not games) will not play from the drive. some do some don't. It is not a region problem - they are all region 2. Windows does not read the disc when it is inserted and does not register a disc in the drive when I show 'my computer'. CD's all play normally. Could this be a driver (internal) issue or is my DVD CD combo just too old now?
    Thanks Marie.

    Hi
To give you some precise answer it will be interesting to know which DVDs are not readable. Meaning of word 'some media' is to general and not helpful to understand the problem.
Satellite A30 is pretty old notebook model and it is possible that ODD functionality is not good anymore. You can try to clean the lens.

  • Problem loading some Audio CD's - Drive does not recognize them

I am having problems with the drive not reading some CD Audio books. I do not know when this started but
it is starting to become a pain. It may have started after I updated to 10.6.
How do I get it to recognize these CD's? I have some old books I wanted to listen to again and
some new ones from the library that won't load but sill work in my CD player.

You drive may need cleaning.  Use a drive cleaning kit.  Make sure your discs are not dirty, scratched or marked in any way.  You may need to change disc brands in some cases.

  • Disc drive refuses to recognize CDs

The disc drive will recognize DVDs, but all music and data CDs don't even get the courtesy of acknowledgment. No attempts at even giving it a practise spin or two, just stays in there until you eject it facing the exact same way it did as it went in. There have been increasing sporadic problems with this over the past couple years, but now it won't even make an effort. I'm really at a loss here.

I have read in the past that there are two laser mechanisms for reading optical disks, one for CDs and one for DVDs. It is possible that the mechanism for CDs has quit working or the lens has gotten dirty. Since you've had sporadic problems for a couple of years it could be a failure of the CD laser itself. I'm sorry but I can't point you to any articles on this topic.

  • The optical drive does not recognize my cd's and it is new!

hi, i'm just needing some help. My macbook pro has already 3 month since i bought it(new), and now, i want to install some softwares by cd, it doesn't read it, eighter eat the cd, i have to pull all inside, it does not work... i dnt have time 2 go 2 apple support, if there's anything i can do by myself?

Since you've a new computer, I would just take it back to the Apple Store - with discs in hand - and show them the problems you're experiencing. No need to try any kind of 'fixes' yourself. Just take it back to Apple and have them deal with it.

  • DVD drive does not recognize disks

    Hey,
I have an e-mac with panther on it. I have been successfully burning DVD's for a few years now. This weekend I got an interesting error message. MY super drive would not read the blank DVD that I put in the drive and then it would not read ANY disk that I put in the drive. IT is like my Superdrive has fallen out of my system.
I believe the original error message was this: Put a blank DVD in the drive and then the drive would open and close and open again and say, "Please put a blank DVD in the drive."

Did you reboot? It sounds like a file systems error or incompatiblility. Do you have a "test" startup ID? If not, create one and turn off all utilities and applications and just keep IDVD or Disk Utility and Quicktime, Itunes, -- all apps that can view and read audio and graphis, movies. And close all the apps that are document readers-- Word, etc.
Then restart with the Test ID and try your drive then.
Keep this Test ID-- name it "to use SuperDrive" or something. Then when yo have time-- do the whole trial and error of turning one more app on and restart, etc-- takes hours maybe...
Also-- did you recently put in a new app or update? I've read that some of the Apple updates have caused problems with emacs and Ipods. So it is best to turn off or trash those upgrades and test that out. (you can always dl them again)
I bet it is just as simple as this-- some conflict with an application or new update.

  • Satellite L300D-SP5001 Mat****a drive does not recognize blank CDs

    Hello Everyone,
    System Specs:
    *Model:* L300D-SP5001
*OS:* Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit
    *Memory*: 4GB
    *Processor*: AMD X2 64 Bit 1.9Ghz
(I know Im wasting resources with the 32 bit windows)
    *Problem:*
Blank CDs are not identified by the system, meaning it always says there is no disc inside.
    *Context:*
Disc is inside, is writable (blank) and have tried with many different brands.
The DVD-ROM is a Mat****a UJ-850S and is recognized (listed fine in the Device Manager), OS says driver is up to date and original discs are played fine.
    *Question:*
What could I do to be able to burn cds? other than getting a more reliable brand and replacing the drive...
    Thank you!

    > However I do not have that record in my registry. I also use Nero and its also unable to identify any media in the drive. Im thinking the lens decalibrated (being it a laptop and having to travel long distances at times...) so perhaps I should get a new drive you think?
Yes, maybe you are right and this is a drives laser lens issue I mean this can happen if the laser lens cannot calibrate in the right position in such case only the ODD replacement would help.
But listen buddy. Did you try reinstalling the Windows?
If not, try this because this should be always done in order to test if this could be an software issue
You could also try to clean the laser lens using a cotton-wool tip and a alcohol
In some cases this could be helpful.
