Every time i put a disk into my disc drive it takes it makes an noise and ejects it straight away..

I have an Intel iMac G5. My DVD-R drive ejects all blank discs. No error message comes up, just some mechanical noises prior to ejection. Having trouble finding the right drivers to fix this, if it is a driver issue.
yes, there are countless blank media types, and there is NO DVD burner out there that will feed them all.
DID you switch to a new DVD blank media?
Also cheap DVD blank media has about a 10% reject ratio......try further down the stack

If it also ejects commercial DVD movies, you have a dirty laser diode lens. -

I can not read or write certain DVDs in my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro since upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I insert an empty DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected. I insert a recorded DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected.
I have tried a commercial Video DVD - (Sony) and that one actually did work ... so I am pretty clueless - I can not write any DVD right now.
In the forum I have found many posts regarding this issue under Lion already.
However, my drive used to work fine under Lion and I was able to watch / record DVDs etc.
Now, it is no longer working and I can not use it. Does anyone know how to solve this?

I just got back from the Apple store, after setting up an appointment, and they told me that my life is horrible because my MacBook Pro is no longer under warranty as of 32 days ago. This is really BS.
However just like any other company that treats me with poor customer service I just take my future business elsewhere and make sure not to recommend them to any friends and family - as well as tell them about my horrid experience. -
My CD/DVD drive ejects often and without warning. It remains open until I close it again, but it will soon eject again. It ejects with no disc in it, while playing a CD/DVD, while in the middle of burning, you name it. I bought a new drive (Lightscribe) and it does the same thing. I put the original Superdrive in and it still ejects also. Let me know if anyone's heard of this one. Thanks in advance.
BrianMy MacBook has "ejected" by itself, uncommanded, several times since I bought it. No disc in the drive at the time. There doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when it happens. It has happened when I was typing (hand nowhere near the Eject button) -- besides, there's no disc in the drive, so Eject button doesn't do that anyway.
Other times, it happens when I'm not even touching the MacBook.
Erase / install and it's still doing it. Reset SMC and it's still doing it. -
LaCie 3TB external hard drive ejecting improperly
Anybody have experiences with a LaCie external hard drive ejecting improperly? Not able to run long enough to do proper back ups and file maintenace. Closes or ejects on its own.
I just replaced a 2TB LaCie with an 8TB model and encountered the same problem I would get a "disc improperly ejected" message and since my iTunes library is stored there the app would go into kernel panic and require a force quit. Very annoying.
I switched from the thunderbolt ports to the USB and have not had any issues since.
I never had any issue with my My older HD so I think maybe the Thunderbolt connector that came with the new drive was bad. -
Empty optical drive ejects randomly (every 2-15 mins)
I'm having a problem with my recently purchased Studio 1535 laptop....
Specs:
Vista Home Premium (SP 1) (32-bit)
Intel Core2Duo T5750 (2GHz)
4Gb RAM
The problem is that every now and then I hear the optical drive make an eject sound, even though there is no disc in it. It doesn't seem to happen when a disc is inside ...I can play CD albums without them ejecting mid play.
I don't think the behaviour is a serious problem (the noise that the drive makes sounds more or less like a normal eject mechanism). However, it's quite annoying and disconcerting, and I don't think it's 'normal' because we have another Studio 1535 (exactly the same specs) that doesn't behave like this.
If anyone can help me rectify this behaviour I'd be extremely thankful!

Message Edited by RelicDelic on 09-06-2008 11:43 AMfirst try upgrading the firmware on the drive. this is different than the drivers or the bios version. if that does not work, try this and let me know... i have heard of this on some older laptops... it is worth a shot in the dark. try both separately so we know what worked....

Follow the appropriate steps below for your system:
1. Restart your computer.
2. At the first text on the screen or immediately after the Dell logo appears,
press the <F2> key every three seconds until the message Entering Setup appears.
3. When the System Setup screen appears, press <Alt> + <F> keys at the same
time to resotre the defaults. (DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, IF YOU HAVE A CUSTOMIZED BIOS, MAY HAVE TO GO THROUGH IT AGIAN - not a big deal)
4. Press the <Esc> key.
5. Press the <Enter> key to save changes and exit.
Your computer restarts.
--check if the drive ejects in bios.
To enter into Bios please perform the following.
Restart the system.
Keep tapping the F2 as soon as you see the initial dell logo key to Enters
System Setup menu (i.e. the bios screen)
2.Press the eject button on the front of the CD drive.
3. Restart and try it out. -
I have a PowerBook Pismo (Firewire and bronze keyboard). OS X 10.3.9 with all the latest secutity upgrades.
When the machine starts up, the DVD drive ejects whether or not there is a disk in it.
This makes it difficult to boot from the install CD to run Disk Utility.

Disconnect all USB devices including a USB mouse, then restart...see if the drive tray still pops open. Some known troublemakers are Adesso Tru-Form keyboard, Griffin iMate USB/ADB adapter, Keyspan Twin serial, and possibly others.
Test each device individually, then see if updated software is available. -
LaCie 6TB drive ejects when Air sleeps: I use two 6TB LaCie drives - home and office with my Air, which travels with me between the locations. Only have a problem with one that inappropriately ejects when the Air sleeps (and only sometimes). Is there a fix? I've read others who believe that the problem is with the operating system (I'm using 10.9.2). But my problem suggests that it's with one of the LaCie's. Any suggestions about how to fix?
Lacie doesnt make HD, thats a Seagate inside the box.

Yes, get a 4TB max HD, 6TB drives are both new and have known issues, ...in fact so do most all 4TB drives.

Large external hard drives are great! Large external hard drives are horrible
It is a common premise that people are overjoyed at the dropping prices per terabyte on external hard drives, and the first thing that enters most peoples minds is "great, I can put all my stuff on one drive,... all of it!" However considerations need to be made in creating a giant single choke point for not mere data loss, but seriously large data loss. If there is at the very least yet another redundant copy, this is fine, otherwise do not consider it whatsoever. Some 3TB and 4TB drives of all mfg. have, at the time of this writing, reliability concerns currently and best recommendation is staying at 2TB drives or less.
Advantages and disadvantages of larger 3TB and 4TB external drives must be weighed -

When I sleep my iMac, some of the drives eject. When I wake my computer I get the improperly ejected warning dialog. I don't have the "Put Hard Disks to sleep" check enabled. which is basically disconnecting the iMac from power and reconnecting it following a precise procedure.
Are you sure you have an iMac G5? I ask because it says your OS is 10.6.1, which does not run on a PowerPC iMac (such as a "G5"). If your iMac is Intel, this is the correct procedure for resetting the SMC.

I have several external drives and when one ejects on it's own it usually immediately restarts again and does not give me time to find which one was the problem drive.
Is there a way of figuring this out?

External drive ejected during "consolidate library" attempt
I have a recent mac mini running mountain lion with a 1 tb g drive connected via firewire 800 and a 2 tb seagate connected via usb. The original itunes files are on the gdrive. I want to consolidate and back up the music files to the Seagate but in the middle of the consolidation, the g drive spontaneously ejects and I get an error message saying i have ejected it improperly. I had settings on so computer would not go to sleep so its not that. I have run disk utility on both external drives, no errors. I had this happen twice while trying to consolidate library and twice while trying a simple drag and drop of the itunes folder. What's the deal? Can anyone help? Has anyone had this problem?

It began to display the same issues you are describing. I brushed it off and blamed the cheap enclosure I purchased. This all occurred 1 week ago on 1-22-2013.
On Saturday 1-26-2013 I was backing up a sweet sixteen shoot via time machine connected to the USB3 port and the drive ejected mid way of a 70 gig back up. I found that strange because I've never had a problem with that drive or the enclosure it's in. (By the way this is a USB2 enclosure) I tried it 3 more times and the same issue occurred. I figured it was the cable and switched it with another USB cable and this time it worked.
Not thinking much about I assumed the problem was the cable. The next morning I realized I still had one 8 gig compact flash card in my camera and I needed to back that one up. This time I used my USB 3 RAW STEEL UDMA card reader to ingest the work. There were only 20 images on the card. During import the compact flash drive froze on the third image. I had to force quit and redo the import again. It took 3 times before I had no issues importing the images. I could not figure out what the **** was going on until it hit me.
During my trouble shooting I realized the 3 drives were, when they ejected themsleves, connected to the same port in the back of my iMac. The second one closest to the SD card reader port in the back. That was the free port I kept switching to use these different peripherals.
I need to do a little more testing but I'm almost certain something is wrong the the USB3 ports in the back of the new computers. Never had these issues with my late 2009 iMac.
The last thing I want to is haul this machine into Apple after it took me 4 days to get it set up the way I use it for my Photography business.

My second internal drive ejects improperly
I installed an optical drive when I purchased my iMac in June 2012. When my iMac falls asleep the otical drive ejects and I have to restart to remount it since disk doctor can't see it. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to solve it?

I misspoke, I installed a 2nd internal hard drive, a Fusion 2 TB drive. It "ejects improperly" when the iMac is put to sleep. I've set up energy preferences to either put the hard drive to sleep whenever possible and have also checked that option off with the same results. I create aliases on the side bar for easy access to folders on that drive that disappear when this happens and I have to keep recreating them. I installed the internal drive to avoid the issue of external drives ejecting improperly which forces me to restart my machine or the ext. drive. I also wanted to take advantage of the speed gain from the internal connection. I can't find any info with anyone else having this problem. The Fusion drive is partitioned into 3 volumes. I'm going to reformat it into 1 and see if that makes a difference.

it is a powermac g4 450, computer boots and works fine. the drive doesn't eject by itself any other time.

paulplas1, welcome to Apple Discussions.
The problem could be due to some add-on device plugged into the computer. In particular, a malfunctioning mouse or keyboard could be sending a signal to the system to eject the disk.
To solve this problem, unplug all external devices and restart the computer to see if the problem still occurs. If the drive does not pop open or eject the disk, then one of the devices plugged into the computer was causing the problem. Take the keyboard by itself and plug it into the computer, then restart the computer and see of the drive opens or the system ejects the disk inside; if it doesn't, plug the mouse in and restart again. Continue to add the equipment back onto the computer one piece at a time and restarting until the drive opens or the system ejects the disk; the last piece of equipment added to the system is responsible for causing the drive to open.

USB3 ONLY external drive ejecting during backup
This has been discussed and posted in various ways here, but I haven't seen/found a solid solution yet which might be out there.
Has anyone figured out the solution to a USB3 drive ejecting on it's own?
My staff's OWC USB3 external portrable hard drive keeps ejecting during any operation: time machine, Carbon Copy, Lightroom, importing, moving files, etc.
Attached is a screen shot of the warning box that comes up when the drive ejects itself.

The machine is a 2012 NON-Retina MBP.

EXTERNAL DRIVE:

We have used the drive, and cable on my 2011 MBP, OSX 10.7.5 with only USB2 on my machine, and it runs perfectly fine under all conditions.
ATTEMPTED FIXES:
Repaired disk permissions
Disk Warrior
Defrag
All Updates for OSX
Re-install OSX
All updates for 2012 MBP
Taken to Apple "Genius" bar twice. They confirm the failures. Initially blamed the drive/enclousure/cable. Then blamed that there were firmware and other updates that would fix it....which they did not.
YET TO ATTEMPT :
Creating a 10.7.5 boot partition on the 2012 MBP and test that.
Trying a powered external drive on the 2012 MPB
Trying a FW800 drive
Any thing else I am missing? Trying to avoid having to send it into Apple Care and be without a needed machine for week+, and concerned that like others, it won't be fixed anyway.

Backup drive ejects after TM backup

I am not sure if this has already been covered, as there are various similar posts, so please accept my appologies if it has.
I have an external 1TB WD My Passport drive which I use for TM backup's. When I plug in via USB, DriveUnlock appears. I unlock the drive, then instigate a TM backup. All goes fine, then from what I can gather, when the TM backup has finished, the drive ejects itself. There is no error messages, unmount drive issues, it just dissappears from finder. I can only assume the backup has been successful, as no error messages appear, meaning the drive wasn't ejected while backup was in progress. I have changed the USB cable, as well as tried different ports, but the same always happens. In System Preferencies/Energy Saver, I have made sure the Put HD to sleep is un ticked. Still it happens. Has anyone else had this problem, and is it fixable? I would love to keep the drive attached and backing up for the period I am working, usually 12 hours a day, rather than the once a day at the moment.

If you're using the drive with Time Machine, you don't need WD's SmartWare backup software. It may be conflicting with TM. Uninstall it.
