Disc Drive is Not Working!!! Help!!

Hi: I have a disc stuck in my drive . There's no disc icon displayed and the eject button is not working. When I restart my computer I don't hear any sounds of the CD spinning. What do I do? My iMac is only 6 months old. Please help

When you restart the computer, have you held the
mouse button down (not sure with mighty mouse) ?
This should try and eject a disc in the optical drive.
Also, an application such as iTunes has an eject
button. Could be the disc is inside the drive wrong
and maybe it is backwards; with no data readable.
Some users have tried the eject, and tipped the
entire computer on its side, so the optical drive
slot is facing down; so as to get a gravity help.
You'd need to be using a USB wired mouse,
since a BlueTooth wireless one won't work.
Could be there may be an obstruction in the way
of the optical drive slot; maybe some small bit
of felt or other material in the drive opening from
when it was assembled. You should contact the
AppleCare support people to see who you would
take that into for a repair or replacement part.
There are some ideas on how to eject a disc
in Apple Help inside the computer; if you click
and make sure the Finder is the desktop you
are looking at, in the upper menubar, use Help.
Key in something such as Eject CD or cd eject,
a list of things to try should be among the results.
You could try and see if using Disk Utility (in
Utilities folder -- see GO in Finder, click on
Utilities Folder in here, find Disk Utility, launch.
Choose to eject the disk in the optical drive here.
(May also repair disk permissions, too.) Then Quit.
{The computer may need some expert attention,
as a few of these have had some disc issues;
as indicated by a search I just did online, and
Apple Discussions forums listings tell this tale.}
A good investment, before the first year of owner-
ship has passed, buy an AppleCare Extended Plan.
Be sure to enroll the plan, too, before the first year.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • I have a very old mac and need to upgrade to snow leopard to update my itunes, my disc drive is not working can i download snow leopard without a disc?

I have an old mac version 10.5.8  I need to update to snow leopard and my disc drive isn't working... Can I download snow leopard without a disc?

Snow Leopard is only available on disk. Furthermore, even if you had a working disk drive, you may not be able to install Snow Leopard anyway, depending on just how "old" your Mac is. It must have an Intel processor to run Snow Leopard (Macs with Intel processors were first made in 2006), among other requirements.

  • My disc drive doesn't work when iTunes is installed.

I had to uninstall and reinstall iTunes last night and this morning I discovered my disc drive was not working. I looked online and found that iTunes will sometimes do this to a computer's disc drive. I uninstalled iTunes and my disc drive now works. Is there anyway I can keep iTunes and have my disc drive working?

    Hi reynoldsmar!

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.

  • CD/DVD drive not working --- HELP

i'm wondering if this is something i can fix myself or that i'll have to bring in....
for no apparent reason, ie no trauma or anything, my CD drive is not working. when i put in a CD (haven't used a DVD in it yet) the computer doesn't read it. it makes a odd noise and then nothing.....i push eject and the computer kinda freezes and i can only get the CD out if i Force Quit iTunes and restart my iBook. any thoughts, greatly appreciated.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are your System Preferences set to do what you are expecting when you put a CD into the drive tray?
    From Mac Help:
You can determine how you want your computer to respond when you insert a music or picture CD in the optical drive. You can:
Open iTunes or iPhoto to play or view your CD
Open another application of your choice
Run a script to perform a sequence of actions
Ignore the disc if you don't want to do anything right away
Open System Preferences and click CDs & DVDs.
Choose an action from the two pop-up menus for music CDs and picture CDs.
Close the window to save your settings.
To play a music CD automatically when you insert it, you also need to set iTunes to begin playing when you insert a CD. In the General pane of iTunes Preferences, choose Begin Playing from the On CD Insert pop-up menu.
If your System Preferences are set correctly, you can try to do a little hard drive maintenance to see if that will help. This may or may not help (depending upon what the problem is), but it won't hurt to try. Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up, try to restart normally, and go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair permissions on the hard drive.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
Also, how big is your hard drive and how much space remains available on it? Strange things start to happen when you have less than 5 GB of available hard drive space.

Sending by Dropbox where, To who, to what computer? As your does not start up.
You need to take at least the OS disc to a work Mac computer and create DMG from the OS install disc then restore that DMG to USB thumb drive. Then you can boot the computer from that thumb drive and install the OS. That is if your hard drive is functioning correctly.
Then you can use the App disc in the external CD/DVD drive to load up all the included Applications that come with your version of OS X.

  • Macbook Pro recent update to Snow Leopard now disc drive doesn't work??

I just updated my Macbook Pro to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 now my disc drive won't work at all! I've read a couple forums here that show everyone had this problem back in 2009 when I guess this first came out...great. How do I fix this? It appears to be a software issue. If I upgrade to mavericks will this fix it? Although I also see that makes your computer very slow! Ugh I need help please!

    Two things to try:
    1. SMC reset, Directions are here - note the steps are different depending on whether or not the battery can be removed by the user:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    2. NVRAM / PRAM reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
These steps are worth trying, although the problem may be deeper.
Please post back with your results.
