Disc Drive Woes

I've read a lot of the topics on this forum already, so I've had a chance to read through everyone's suggestions for troubleshooting. However, I feel like my situation hasn't been addressed on these forums, because I'm having multiple problems with my disc drive.
I've had my laptop since June 2007, and it was working perfectly until February 2008. Between those two dates, my disc drive had no problems whatsoever reading movies, or importing/burning CD's. I had one incident in January when I tried to import a CD from a few years ago, which didn't work, but I figured it was just because the CD was old and didn't have any other problems. However, now I'm not sure, because since February my disc drive has been doing the following:
Importing CDs-Imports the first 8 songs, freezes on song 9; I have to force quit iTunes and eject the CD (I use iTunes for importing/burning purposes)
Burning CDs-Burns the first 8 songs, when it hits song 9 it goes haywire and gives an error message and spits out the CD. I thought I could get around this by burning 8-track CDs until I learned that my car stereo couldn't read them, except for one, and it kept skipping/being obnoxious in general.
Movies-I can't make it through a movie without it freezing at least once, and when it does freeze I have to manually shut it down, reboot, start the movie, skip to a point past the freezing point, which works until I hit another freezing point.
Oddly enough, I play The Sims 2 on my laptop, and it works perfectly. No freezing or unusual lag. I heard about a sort of software called SecuRom that's been put into some of the Sims 2 games and wreaks havoc on hard drives, but I'm not sure if the software affects Macs.
I know this is a lot of information, and I plan on bringing in my laptop to an Apple Store soon, but any feedback would be appreciated.

My, my - sounds like a lot of issues for a recent computer. It could be that one of the applications is causing you grief or even, how full is your hard drive?
I would think about starting over with just reloading the operating system and try the iTunes and CD-R stuff again.

Correct. No install, no licensing system, no working apps. You must run the installer properly. Refer to the below articles:
Errors "Exit Code: 6," "Exit Code: 7"
Troubleshoot with install logs
Anything beyond that will require much more info on your part.

How do I install CS5 on new iMac without a disc drive, if remote installation isn't working?

I purchased CS5 for my laptop (Macbook Pro 2007 I believe) and now have the newest iMac without a disc drive. I have tried remote installation, but it did not work. I attempted to copy the installation files onto a USB and then transfer them, however, the iMac then prompts me to insert the installation cd. How can I install it? Any help is greatly appreciated! I was signed in with download assistant, no just in at adobe.com... I've tried different perferences and settings but when I click on the links nothing seems to happen. I've been messing around with this for a few hours now and it dawned on me that it may have something to do with my internet. I live outside the city- totally nice for gardening, totally terriable for internet thus I have a verizon data plan and not unlimited internet, I think possibly verizon is shutting it down because of restrictions I have on my data. This type of thing also happened when I upgraded to Mavericks. The file itself was larger than my month's data so it seemed like it wouldn't initiate the download... I don't know for sure if it is the same problem here but if you're telling me that you are having more successful results than I am that might be the reason.
I'll take my computer to work or to my mom's house or somewhere where I can have unlimited access and see if I have any better success.

How can I get software from a disc onto my macbook air which does not have a disc drive.?

I have macbook air with no disc drive. However, I recently was given some cookbook software as a gift and it is in disc form. Wondering if there is an easy way to get this new software onto my mac. Was hoping I could upload the software to another PC and then burn it to a thumb drive and switch it over that way.Thoughts on if this is doable??

Communication between the computer and the disc drive failed

The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022). This computer has been out of the box for less than a month and this has been a growing problem.

My problem was FIXED at the apple store..... there was something wrong in the system preferences and the genius deleted something that recreated it's self. Surely enough we we're able to burn a 600 mb dmg of nothing onto a few test disks. For anyone having this issue...it's NOT The media, it's some configuration issue within the computer's preferences. I'm telling you all to take your machine to the nearest apple store and have them fix it, if your machine is still under warranty the fix is free. There was no hardware issue, so the optical drive was not replaced.

I find it hard to believe that your new laptop has no disk drive. I can not believe it boots off some network device. It is quit normal to download or copy Photoshop installation files to a Laptops internal hard disk or ssd using an external DVD or network shared. Then install Photoshop from the copied or downloaded installation files. I haven't installed Photoshop from CD or DVD in many years. Normally you do not need to copy prior versions of Photoshop to do an upgrade. You will need to be able to enter your upgrade eligible version of Photoshop serial number.
I think the idea of network computers without disk drives went out vogue many years ago it was a concept that never took off.

Can not burn a playlist in iTunes 11.4 to a CD, upon completion of the burn operation get error message, "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry." Receive this message using 2 different external drives that are Apple compatible. 1. is a Pioneer SuperDrive that I had replaced from a previous Mac in a OWC enclosure, 2. the other is a OWC 8X Slim Portable USB 2.0 External. After receiving the error message I can re-insert the disc into the drive and it will mount the disc and it will list all the songs with the correct size, but none of them will play. iTunes then comes up asking me if I want to import the CD, at this time iTunes has a (not responding) status in Finder. Can burn from finder with no problem, only have issue in iTunes.

Last year I took the iMac to the local Apple Store 3 times and they determined the optical drive was defective and replaced it, the last time even replacing the cable to it. When I attempt to burn playlist from internal Superdrive it states it can not burn due to media errors. I have tried Memorex, TDK and PNY media with the same results. I thought purchasing the OWC Slim Portable USB 2.0 External would resolve the issue. If I put a commercial audio CD into the Internal Superdrive it will not mount and will eject it, if I insert the commercial audio CD into the external drive it will mount and play. Now the extended warranty is expired on the iMac and I don't know what next to try.

After multiple attempts to both find an answer to this problem or to fix it myself I've given up and switched to a Windows PC. The same media works just fine at maximum write speed with no special tricks needed. I got my iMac specifically to manage my photographs and burn images for friends and family. It has been nothing but a big disappointment to say the least. To read messages saying I need to lower my write speed or buy more expensive CDs is just laughable. Unless I see something major change I'm sticking with my Windows PC.

Just upgraded to 10.8.3 - Can no longer use disc drive

Well this made my weekend.
Updated to 10.8.3 and my disc drive has been rendered useless.
After I boot up, I can if I am lucky use the drive once, but more often than not the disc whirs and then spits the disc back out.
CD's with data I had written on to (and was using the morning before I upgraded) can no longer be read.
I have seen various comments re this but cant see any solution anywhere?

Can I use my old Macbook Pro as an external disc drive while installing Windows 7 through boot camp?

I want to install the Windows 7 CD on the newest version of the 2013 Macbook pro 10.9.2 running OSX Mavericks, through Boot Camp. It does not have a disc port, nor do I have an external disc drive....but I do have an older macbook that does have a disc drive and I know you can supplement it for an external disc drive.
My question is can I use my old Macbook pro's as an external disc drive for the installation of Windows 7 in Boot camp? Will this be a problem? Or do I have to buy an external disc drive separately.

After canceling the burning of a disc in iTunes my disc drive is no longer recognized.

I have: MBP 13" 10.6.7 w/ a standard dvd/cd burner (the one that normally comes with them)
I was in the process of burning a really long playlist (requiring 4 cds) and at the end of the 4th it was taking forever (5-10 minutes?) to "finish burning" so I decided to cancel the burn and just re-burn that section on a new disc. When I canceled it started taking another 5-10 minutes and nothing would let me eject the disc because it wasn't recognized yet (I didn't let it finish the burn) - I tried disc utility, terminal commands, the eject button, everything.
I then restarted a few times trying the various ways to force eject a disc (holding down the trackpad, pressing option, holding the eject button) but non worked and then once restarted my computer didn't even recognize my disc drive in disc utility. I tried re-burning a playlist so that iTunes would maybe eject the disc in order to insert a new one but it just said "Disc burner or software not found..." At this point I have no idea what to do but I'd really like to have my disc drive working well...

My own HP pavillion has the same problem. Try googling "Vista doesn't recognize DVD" one answer is to edit our upper and lower filters in a registry setting, another is to power down and remove battery for at least a minute and a third is a script that you can run. I only mention them because I've seen all 3 and according to the sites all 3 have met with some success. Sadly for me, no glory! Good luck as I'm still looking.
