Disc drives ejecting on their own

Hello,
I have a 21.5" iMac and I have attached a 4 bay NAS device with two 3TB HDD's. When I power the device on my Mac see's them and then they disappear and I get a message saying they were disconnected incorrectly. They typically show up and disappear several times and then I get nothing. I go into disk utility to try and mount the drive again but this option is greyed out. The drives are formatted as exFAT so I could transfer the files from a PC. Anyone have a clue why these drives will not stay mounted?
Thanks!

Are they connected through a USB hub?
For the ones the disconnected without warning regularly, have you tried the drive with a different USB cable?
Are all of these external drives connect to power through the same power strip (surge suppressor). That many 3.5-inch external drive plus the iMac (and whatever else you have) would likely be too much for one power wall outlet connection. If this is the case, connect the iMac by itself or with only with a few low power devices. Spread your other devices, including those FIVE external drives, between TWO other wall outlets. Also, if a power strip is getting old, replace it with a new one.

  • External usb hard drives ejecting on their own

I have five different external powered hard drives. Two are Seagate 1tb, one is a segate 750gb I use for time machine and the fourth is a seagate 500, all of which are usb. The fifth is a simpletech 1tb firewire 800 drive. I'm connecting them to a imac G5. Some of the drives will eject when I xfer data to them. The simpletech hasn't ejected and the seagate 750 I use for time machine has only ejected once. the other three eject and will give an error message saying they weren't ejected properly. I went through tech support but they couldn't figure it out either.

  • Disc drive ejecting discs

Every time i put a disk into my disc drive it takes it makes an noise and ejects it straight away..

    damaged loader if immediate ejection
Contact Apple for replacing your Superdrive.
verify first with another DVD however.

  • Disc Drive ejecting CDs

My disc drive will play some DVDs but when I put a CD in, the drive will make a couple attempts to read it an then spit it out. The CD is brand new. What should I do?

Get a lens cleaning kit like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Endust-Electronics-Console-Cleaner-262000/dp/B003EEMDMC/re f=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388978403&sr=8-2&keywords=dvd+cleaning+disk
That's how it behaves when the lens on the drive is dirty.

  • Disc drive ejecting dvd media

the drive in my Imac G5 2.1Ghz will not hold blank media disc in it they don't show in the finder i place them in to the computer slot drive less then a few minutes it ejects the disc. I have tried to rest the smu/pmu , the PRam , i even went as far to reset the nvram still the drive will not hold the blank media .It will however read pervious burnt dvd disc of the same carousel and pressed dvds.
any thoughts of what other step i should try would be appreciated
    the Imac is running 10.4.11

    It's DUST, yup, dust.
I was having the same problem no matter what type of media - movies would sometimes eject and I would put it back in a few times, then it would work.
Anyway, solution, clean it. You can use air, but that is not as good as what I did.
For $10.00 at best buy, you can buy this disk that has tiny cleaning brushes on it. Its called OptiDisc by memorex. At first it didn't play, and ejected of course, so, I put it back in and opened itunes, it's also an audio disc that will clean and set up audio and test it.
I did this last night after buying some DL Verbatium DVD's that kept ejecting, then I tried -R same thing, after the cleaning section, takes less than 2 minutes, every time I put in a blank DVD I got the what would you like to do.
It has nothing to do with the OS. I have a MB Pro with Tiger 10.4 as well as external HD with 3 partitions, with two bootable, one is 10.5.6 the other 10.5.8, before cleaning, all three OS'es ejected them, after cleaning it now works fine. Good for 30 uses and they recommend after ever 50 hours but since my macbook is one year old, I am thinking it will probably last for a long long time.
Hope this helps you as like me, you probably thought you had to get it fixed and even with Apple care you would be without your mac for days.
This fixed my problem and I bet it fixes a lot of peoples, especially dust, it does collect.
    Thanks!

  • Disc drive ejects tray on every boot...why?

Friends...my Dual 1.8Ghz G5 has suddenly started eject the disc tray every time it's powered on. OSX 10.5.6 It easily closes of course, and is not a bother, but I wondered if any others have experienced this and whether anyone has a solution to prevent this. Anyone?

    Hi jermgold,
I read elsewhere that this can be caused by a third party mouse. It has to do with the default behavior of the mouse is that the main button acts as if it were depressed. If you have a Wacom tablet remove the mouse from the tablet prior to booting. If you have another third party mouse try swapping with an Apple mouse to see if the problem disappears.
    Hope this helps.

  • Firewire drives disconnect on their own

I've tried setting up two different Firewire 800 drives (1 Maxtor MyBook Pro II and two LaCie d2 Quadras). With both the drives aren't recognized right away. I have to reset the bus on the computer first.
Once each was recognized, they would disconnect at from what I can tell are random times, throwing up warnings that disks weren't disconnected properly and that data may have been lost. This happens with minutes of initially connecting to the disk. The disk will reconnect automatically a few minutes later, only to disconnect again in a few minutes.
Both the computer and the LaCie drives have up-to-date firmware. I returned the Maxtor because I thought it was faulty.
    Help. Thanks, Bob

I undid the RAID and things were stable for a few weeks. Then, when I tried to set the screen saver to display pictures from one of my Firewire 800 drives (I have 2, daisy chained), the disconnecting / reconnecting started again.
    Would appreciate any insights.

  • New iMacs have no disc drive, will I have to pay to install software I already own?

So i´ve been on a mission all day trying to find somewhere that has a 2011 iMac in stock, with no success, it appears apple rules over every store in the uk and all 'old' imacs are now discontinued. The main reason I want an old one is because of the fact they have a disc drive (and the slight possibility I could have saved some cash) and I own logic pro 9 on disc. It´s annoying to think that I may have to resort to paying out 80 quid for an optical drive for the new imac or resorting to buying logic again from the app store when in reality i´ve paid for this software and I should be able to install it.
I personally think a solution should be set in place for this, if you have the software on disc and have a valid serial for it you should be able to re download it on the new imacs via the app store. I dont want to mess around with time machine as my mac is clogged up to the max, I simply want a brand spanking new machine, logic pro 9, my project backups and sample library, no more, no less.
If anyone has a solution to my issue please let me know

It's just Apple dragging us kicking and screaming into the future.
See if your Apple online Store has any refurbished iMacs for sale. At present a very limited selection exists in the US store. Their inventory changes frequently.
You should probably be able to continue to use another Mac or PC with a shared optical drive. I have tried it and it works exactly as if the drive were physically installed in your Mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL112
Presumably you will still be able to use an external Superdrive:

  • Disc drive won't eject and then computer won't shut down

When the computer first boots the drive will eject fine but after using it for some time when I hit eject the eject symbol shows on screen but the disc never ejects. If I click the dvd icon to eject it that way then the dvd icon disappears.
Then if I restart the computer all the icons disappear leaving just the wallpaper and spinning beach ball and I have to do a hard power down.
This has happened with another dvd drive as well.
    Any ideas?

I did have the energy saver set to put the hard drives to sleep. I unchecked it and will run for a few days to see if this resolves it.
    Thanks for your post.

  • Disc drive will not eject in Windows 7

I just upgraded from XP pro to Windows 7 home premium yesterday and it's all been working great save one little detail: my disc drive will not eject discs. I've tried the eject button (I'm on an aluminum macbook late 2008) as well as manually ejecting the discs from explorer. When I boot up in OSX I can eject discs fine. It's probably also important to note I'm using the bootcamp drivers that came with my 10.5.6 OSX installation disc, so I don't know if those are up to par for running Windows 7.
    Any suggestions would be great

    Hi,
I have the same problem with windows 7 not ejecting discs (with macbook pro late 2008 with latest Bootcamp drivers installed).
At the moment I can eject the dics only by putting windows 7 to sleep (closing the lid) and on wake the disc ejects by pressing the normal Eject key.
Hope apple (or MS ??) will fix this...

  • By open sharing with a group, do they see their own hard drive when uploading?

I want to make sure if someone in my group and I are online at the same time and that person, who has full access, wants to upload a document, they will see their own hard drive directory and not mine.  Probably a stupid question, but I don't want anyone into my hard drive!  The other people in the group have full access to the URL and full editing, uploading, downloading rights.  Thanks.  Is there someone there who could answer this question  right away?  Thanks very much.  I love the product!!

Thank you.  May I ask if this would work?  (1) I set up my account, give people who work on the same documents my URL (2) They can come to the site at any time and view the documents.  (3) Then what I want is to have a master account where they can come to the URL at any time and they have editing, uploading, etc., privileges.  In a perfect world, I would like to have a master file of documents that a large group of people have access to not only view, but to edit, upload, download, etc., at any time they want.  They would not receive an invitation from me for each individual document.  That might mean many people on the site working on different documents at the same time.  From what I've read, and from what I understand from your reply, these are personal directories, and I think I may be dreaming up a process that doesn't exist!  Do you think this is the case?  And again, thank you very much for taking the time to reply.

  • Some Kind of huge Noise coming from the Disc Drive while inserting and ejecting the disc.

Some Kind of huge Noise coming from the Disc Drive while inserting and ejecting the disc.
i have just purchased it before a couple of days a go.

I just installed a Mac Pro for a client. After a while I noticed this buzzing everyones talking about. It was especially bad after I installed two more internal drives. It seemed to come and go with HD activity. I pulled up the lever on the back of the machine when it was particularly loud and the buzzing went away. So like some others have noticed it's associated with the HD bays. I took the side off and adjusted the seating of the drives so they were exactly centered Now the buzzing is gone. I'll keep an eye on it. Maybe it will need some kind of silicone bumpers where the bay trays are metal to metal.
    More research to come.

    I need some recomendations plz.

    Hello,
you don't need OS X install-disk, but I strongly recomend to burn a Win 7 disk. You may have some problems with installing it from a USB Flash :)
    Cheers!
