Disc icons on RAID disc

I just mounted two seagate 500Gb discs on my Mac Pro. I used the raid option to make them work as backup but so far I haven't started adding any data
I'd like however to change the icon of the disk from the default to something else. Although I've done this quite a few times with various other external drtives, I think that I can't change the icon of the raid group. Can I change the icon or am I stuck with the default?

Wait, case may not be closed...
You say you configured the RAID to work as a backup. There is no RAID configuration that can possibly be used as a backup. So I am hoping you are not relaying on a mirrored RAID set as a backup.
The reason a mirrored RAID is not a backup, is because no data is ever retained when a file is changed or deleted. That is, the process of making a change to a file, or deleting a file is replicated on all drives that make up the RAID set. If you accidently delete your checkbook data, it's gone, you can't get it back from your RAID set. If you need to look at files to see what you were doing two months ago, and you have made changes to those files since then, poof, it is gone, no way to return to that data.
Mirrored RAID is not a backup. It's main purpose is to provide redundancy of hardware to insure that if a drive should fail that you can continue to operate with all data intact, as you make any needed hardware repairs or replacements. Mirrored RAIDS are to hep insure the maximum amount of uptime on your data storage system.
So if your intent was to use a mirrored RAID array for backup, please reconsider. If you were instead using the mirrored array as it was intended, please forgive my slight rant about what mirrored RAIDs are for.
Thanks,
Tom N.

    Hello honeycrisp70,
For that error, check out the article below for additional troubleshooting to get it sorted out. If it continues then you may need to contact Apple support.

  • Remote disc icon?

    Hi,
Just got one of the new Mac minis and it's a cracking wee machine. One small question, however. I re-installed OS X and under devices as well as under Computer I have a cd icon saying 'Remote Disc'. I understand that this is for installing OS X across a network or sharing a disc but why is the icon there? Shouldn't it be there only if I have cd or dvd sharing on?
This is on a clean install (10.5.6) nothing changed, wireless connection. I've got a unibody Macbook and a Power Mac all running Leopard and none of them seem to show the icon.
Apologies for the really dumb questions but gets me wondering why it's there by default.
    Cheers guys!

    dunes,
I have the same experience with my new Mac Mini.
None of my computers have DVD/CD sharing turned on.
Even if I turn on DVD/CD sharing on any my computers, none of the other computers show a Remote Disc in the sidebar.
This Remote Disc has never showed up on any of my computers until I got this new Mini.
There doesn't seem to be much info on DVD/CD sharing that I can find. It doesn't appear that anyone is using this feature except for owners of the MacBook Air.
At this point, I would just like to get rid of this Remote Disc icon and get back to normal.
I have found 3rd party documents on how to turn this feature on for non MacBook Air users, but nothing to turn it off.

  • Missing blank disc icon

OK...what happened to my blank disc icon when I pop one in the drive? I want to drag and drop photos from iPhoto5 onto a disc for a non-mac user, and I can't find my disc...in fact, I can't even find it in the Finder? Anyone know what gives? Thanks,
    Chris
    iMac G5 (1.8 GHz)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Lori, thanks for the tips - now think I see what is happening.
It looks like, when I play with the General Preferences in Finder, I currently have CDs, DVDs checked to display on my Desktop - but I have an external drive which is split into two drives, so my system is reading these two drives as my CD/DVD drives. The result is, my CD drive does not display on the Desktop at all - or in the Finder Sidebar.
Given all of this, even the instructions link you sent me doesn't work. Any idea how I can rectify this? It is almost as if there's not enough room on the desktop or something.
    Thanks.

  • Hard Disc Icon Disappeared

Titanium PowerBook, 1 GHz, OS 10.4.11
My hard disc icon has disappeared from the desktop and the sidebar of Finder windows. The only places I can see it are in the Disc Utility and occasionally when saving from some apps, and then it's often greyed out so I can't access it. I've made sure that the Finder prefs are set to show hard discs, and my external disc does show - it's only the internal drive. CD and DVD icons all show.
I've run Disc Utility off the install disc and did a repair because it found a problem. Repair was successfully verified but didn't bring the icon back.
Also reset the PRAM with no change.
Also changed the icon using CandyBar thinking that maybe the icon itself was corrupted. No luck.
The computer runs fine but occasionally I use that part of the disc that's higher up than my User folder and that's the source of frustration. Also worried that it may be a sign of the drive failing. It's the 2nd drive I've had in this computer, about 3 years old now.
Any thoughts on this anyone? Ideas to bring back my icon (and access)?
    Thanks!

I had my Macintosh HD icon disappear from my Desktop & Finder as New Years Day present! I tried the Finder preferences & deleting the com.apple.desktop.plist file which made no difference. Fortunately the Applescript reference above at http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html fixed it straight away.

USB SuperDrive disc icon does not appear and therefore SuperDrive cannot be used.
There is NO advice regarding this issue on Apple Support.
    Any recommendations?

Also if you don't have this option checked in the Finder Preferences you won't get an icon on the desktop when a disc is inserted.

  • External hard disc icon locked!

Hello, I can't change the owner on my fw hard disc

If I ask for the info, any action I do has no effect... please help!

there is really no default settings for permissions on an external drive (unless it's a bootable drive). you can choose them at your convenience. If you are the only user I would probably make you the owner and staff the group and give both yourself and staff read+write privileges. However, as I said there are no defaults and you use whatever is most convenient. Having root as the owner is not the most convenient thing btw. I would change it to yourself (and group to staff). wheel is a bad group to have there as normally root is the only member of the weel group.
the terminal command for that is
    *sudo chown `id -un`:staff /Volumes/WesternDigital*
It can also be done from the get info panel for the drive.

  • Accidentally trashed my Eject Disc icon--how do I get it back?

Somehow, I rolled the mouse near the Eject Disc icon in the dock, and before I knew it, it was in the trash and POOF gone. How can I restore it to the dock?

Thanks. For some reason, I actually had an eject disc icon in my dock sitting right next to the trash can. Don't know where it came from or how it got there, but it's gone now. I can still eject discs any number of ways, though, so I guess it's not a problem.

I tunes: I am using version 12 of I tunes. Ever since downloading it I get the message when trying to burn a playlist it says, The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disc could not be read from or written to.
I uninstalled V-12 and then reinstalled it. This enabled me to burn a disc again but after a couple of tries I received the same error message again. Has Apple put out a fix to this problem that anyone is aware of?
    Thanks.

    Hi rossfrombluffton,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The resource below provides some general things to consider when burning a disc with iTunes.  I would also try burning a music CD and a data disc from a different application in the Windows OS and trying a different brand CD just to confirm the issue is not with the optical drive.
Can't burn a CD in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-ae/HT203173
Find out what to do if you can't burn an audio CD using iTunes for Windows. Sometimes an audio disc may not burn as expected. Here are some things to check.
    Update iTunes
Download and install the latest version of iTunes for Windows.Check for unauthorized songs
iTunes will stop burning a disc if you purchased one or more of the songs in a playlist from the iTunes Store and the songs aren't authorized to play on your computer. This message should appear: "Some of the files can not be burned to an audio CD. Do you still want to burn the remainder of this playlist? For more information on why some files can not be burned, click below."
To find out which songs aren't authorized, play each song in the playlist. Songs that play are authorized. Songs that don't play aren't authorized. You'll be asked to authorize any unauthorized songs.Make sure your playlist will fit on a single CD
If there are too many songs in a playlist to fit on a single CD, iTunes should ask if you want to burn multiple discs or cancel the burn. This message should appear: "The songs in this playlist will not fit on one Audio CD. Do you want to create multiple Audio CDs with this playlist split across them? This will require more than one blank CD to complete."
If you click the Audio CDs button, the burn will continue and you'll be asked to insert blank CDs until the playlist is completely burned. If you click cancel, the burn will be canceled.
To make the playlist shorter so that it will fit on a single CD, select a song to remove from the playlist and choose Edit > Clear. Repeat this step until the duration of the playlist is between 60 and 80 minutes. The duration appears at the top of the playlist window. Most CD-R discs can hold 60 to 80 minutes of music.
Check how many times you've burned the playlist
An unchanged playlist that contains songs purchased from the iTunes Store can be burned no more than seven times.Additional steps and submitting feedback

  • How do I transfer my boot disc data to a new disc and have the new disc become the boot disc?

My original 500 Gb boot drive is full (~800 Mb available).  I purchased a 1 Tb drive and installed it (no problems).  Now I want to transfer everything on my original boot disc to the new drive and have the new drive become the boot disc.  I would then wipe the original disc and use it for data backup.
Can I simply copy all the contents of the original disc to the new disc (this seems too easy...)?  I am in that process, now, but am feeling insecure about it.  I do have Time Capsule.  However, when I went into it to restore to the new disc it wouldn't perform the task - maybe I am overlooking something...
    Suggestions are welcome!
    Thanks
    Jim

No, the system won't 'copy' but you can clone it.

    http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-HowToClone.html
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
You could also copy or clone  /Users to the new drive and leave the system where it is and free up most of the file space being used. OS X only needs 100GB. That way all the data is on the new drive.
And I think you want to add CCC along with TimeMachine to your backup strategy.
