Disc image and mounting question .

Disc utility - file - new > blank disc image . Save as ( so so ) . Volume name (so so ) . Volume size (4.5 gb dvd-r/dvd-ram. ) . Volume format ( mac os extended journal ) . Encryption ( none ) . Partition (cd dvd ) Image format ( spars bundle disc image )
I do this and I get two icons on desk top . One looks like the hard drive symbol and will say so so .sparsebundle . Then under it is an icon that looks like an external cd player or the like . And will say the image name under it .
When I open the image icon and put my files into it I close it and burn it to dvd . After it is finished I try to open it and it says it cant be mounted . So I tried the hard drive looking one just above it and nothing . So I could eject the icons but not the dvd . She says I should try closing application and try again . Cant find anything to close so I restart and can eject the dvd then . I put it back in and same thing so I restart and get it back out . Now I start all over a new and just before I burn I leave the folder open and click edit select all the file the burn selected items to disc and vwula every thing
s ok .
Now after you have read all this , my question is (1) What is the top icon for ?
(2) Is this normal ?
(3) Can I keep asking questions like this to learn my mac . I do search the forums and they are quite helpful Thank you for your time .

Plymouth Horizon,
I will do my best, First Why are you making a sparse image and then burning? To Me this seems like extra work. What you can do is make a Burn Folder, add the things you want burned and then burn it. It will add Icons for the stuff in it with an alias Icon but it will burn the file not just an alias. I personally only use the images when I want to secure something with a password, or store files I've downloaded.
I would say that its normal, in the case that your making the image on your desktop. The reason you have the two 'Icons' is one is the image and the other is the mount of the image. Think you downloaded a .dmg file you have the file in your downloads folder and the icon on your desktop, you trash them both to get rid of.
And you are more then welcome to keep asking questions here, that is what these forums are for.
Hope that helps,
Weston

Is there a way to do a spelling quiz in captivate using images and not questions as reference. Specifically i want have blank lines underneath an image, where the user looks at the image and types the correct letters to fill in the blank. For example a picture of a dog, with this _ _ _ underneath for the user to fill in, or in some cases perhaps having them fill in the vowel like so "d_g".I must have audio with this , as the students will be able to listen to the audio sound out the word phonetially to help them be able to type it!
    Appreciate any advice! Cheers!

  • Moving Images and Catalog Questions...

Since I first started using Lighroom, I have kept all images in one catalog on my laptop hard drive. It was time to change that and move all images to my NAS, further backing up a copy of all to another external drive, and keeping some copies of images on my laptop for when I am undocked and want to show my best work.
Seemed the only way to do this was to use two catalogs, so I created a new one for the images on the NAS.
After checking that all was good and making a backup of the Laptop catalog, I copied the master folder of all images and sidecars to the NAS. I then opened the new catalog which was empty and imported all from the new location.
So, now I have two catalogs and both backed up as catalogs and complete image sets so I am good no matter what. Let's call them Laptop and Network. I have not yet deleted anything on the Laptop.
Network found not only all images, but somehow 21 more than on the Laptop. Cannot figure out how the number of images could be different, but they are. Not really a problem, but a curiousity, no?
All edits are there. Images look identical to Laptop. Keywords, image titles, folders - all perfect.
    But here are my questions:
I lost my edit histories. By this I mean if I compare an edited RAW image on Laptop. I can see the original image before I started to edit. This is sometimes very helpful. On the Network catalog, it shows the current image and does not have the original preview. The laptop catalog shows the original and current state.
And I lost my collections. Not the end of the world, but would be so nice to not have to rebuild these.
So, is there any way to get these two back? Let's assume, for a moment, that both catalogs are identical (even though there is that 21 image difference). Can I do something with the catalogs or the Previews folder that would bring back the collections and original pre-edit images?
I thought it worth checking before I start to delete images through Lightroom on the Laptop Catalog and continue to edit on the Network catalog. Anything? Export as catalog and replace the .lrcat and rename it? Copy over the root-pixels.db? Any trick?
And last, if anyone is reading, a feature request:
Would be nice to have a preference to select the number of backups to keep. For example, if I could set it to ten, I would never have to worry at all abotu backing up after each session and going to delete old backups no longer needed.
Thanks for any advice. Posted this on  several boards hoping someone might reply before I start to edit again later today. Apologize if you see this in multiple places.
    ~Bob

    You are actually exactly right.
I spent the morning deleting all I had done on the NAS drive and exporting as a catalog with negatives to the NAS. It now has everything I wanted there including the history and collections.
Took a while to get there, but works just fine now and I have two catalogs - one portable and one server based with the .ircat on the laptop for both. Not the most intuitive, but done.
    Thanks.

  • Using SE friendly urls - Broken Images and other questions

Im trying to find a workaround for an issue caused when I create SE friendly URLS and i have a few questions too.
    I am making www.mydomain.com/itemid=114
    into www.mydomain.com/shirts/red/114
question, is keeping the 114 still in the url ok?
does it matter if its at the beginning or the end?
like the above or like this www.mydomain.com/114/shirts/red
and the biggest issue is - how do i work around the image references.
    www.mydomain.com/itemid=114
on this page, i have an image named LOGO.jpg
and the reference is just i/logo.jpg which is relative to the page url and the real location is www.mydomain.com/i/logo.jpg
    HOWEVER
when i use the SE friendly url, its looking for the image in the relative folder - (which is a fake folder of course)
    www.mydomain.com/shirts/red/114
so on this page its looking for www.mydomain.com/shirts/red/i/logo.jpg
SO - my question is - how do I override this and force it to ignore the folders references in the url? I still need it to look for www.mydomain.com/i/logo.jpg. I do realize that I could of course reference the images using a full url ....
meaning instead of using i/logo.jpg i could use www.mydomain.com/i/logo.jpg
but i would rather not go this route since there are about 20 image references within the template. so if there is a better way to scoot around this I would love to know what it is.
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

I bet you are using a relative path for your css include
instead of a root path. So if you have the following in your
    http://localhost/demo/index.cfm
    <link href="../styles/main.css" rel="stylesheet"
    type="text/css" />
then it will look in the next folder up for a folder called
styles with a file called main.css
If you have the same line of code in
    http://localhost/demo/index.cfm/about-our-company
then it will look for a folder in the root called demo with a
folder in called index.cfm with a folder in called styles with a
    file in called main.css.
To solve this you need to reference your style sheet as
    follows:-
    <link href="/styles/main.css" rel="stylesheet"
    type="text/css" />
Notice how the href begins with a forward slash (/) this
means to always access it from the webroot. You will need to do
this for all your internal links as well because they will not
work, this means links and image references the works.

  • Finder crashes when trying to open disc mounted from disc image

I downloaded a disc image of an application I need to install (Verizon Access Manager).  Image downloads fine and when I double click it, it mounts the applicaiton disc.  But if I try to open the application disc, it crashes the Finder.
I checked both the disc image and the disc it created with Disk Utility and they both come back clean.
    Not sure what to do.

Might open Activity Monitor in Utilities & see if you can force Quit/Restart Finder there, but might try this...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if Finder & Search work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
If that doesn't work my next guess would be maybe Spotlight is messed up.

  • Help! Can't mount disc images or run Disc Utility!

    Hey all,
Somethings gone wrong with my iMac, I've attempted to mount a disc image, and I receive the following error:
"The following disc images failed to mount. Reason: No such file or directory"
This now happens with every single .dmg file I try to mount. Even ones I know work because i've used them before. So I know for a fact that the file I've tried to mount isn't just been damaged.
    It gets worse...
I tried to run Disc Utility to repair the problem and it won't open. Everytime I try I get the message "The application Disc Utility quit unexpectedly". I click re-open, and try again, but still nothing.
I don't know what to do, i've downloaded Disc Warrior, but couldn't install as I obviously can't mount dmg files.
Also, my Toast application won't open, don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Anyway, does anybody have any advice? It would be so greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hey guys, so I've acquired the DiskWarrior disc, rebuilt the drive, and I am still unable to mount dmg files.
    Any further suggestions?

  • Disc Utility and Images for an iMovie project.

I am trying to make an image from an iMovie project so I can burn later to a DVD. When in Disc Utility ( DU ) I go to File - Disc Image From Folder, then I find the folder I created that contains my iMovie project. I click on that folder and it opens up showing my iMovie icon - the one with star on it- in another window, but the Star Icon is greyed out. Anyway, I proceeded making a disc image and read over my options, I choose just " read " and I also choose for a " CD/DVD Master " All proceeded and finished and the image was made. Then I burned that image using Disc Utility and ejected the DVD. When I re-inserted the DVD to try on DVD Player in mounted on the desktop and it was called " Movie Folder " (which was the folder I previously had named earlier) the DVD Player gave me the "stop symbol" and it said " Supported Disc Not Available " Should I have chosen a different option then CD/DVD master or is it because the iMovie Star icon was greyed out and not highlighted as the Folder itself was ? Hope this makes sense ! Eric

iDVD is not allowing me to burn a copy, whether I
    export, drag and drop, whatever.
Have you tried setting iDVD to make a disk image file, instead of burning a DVD directly?
    The iMovie goes in
fine to iDVD and then I burn ( try ) it almost
completes the process and the Blue Bar is full and
the Burn Wheel stops turning, then any movement of
the cursor after that point cause the Spinning Ball
and have to Force Quit. This happens whether I use
a iPhoto Slideshow or a iMovie project all 06.
Ive trashed the com.appleiDVD.plist thing and ran
Disc Utility and Re-Booted, but still the same
    result.
How long are you waiting? iDVD is slow and may take several hours.
As far as the Disc Image, whats up there, are you
telling me I can only make a disc image in iDVD and
not iMovie? I just can't get a Finished project
onto a piece of Plastic not matter what I try ???
You can burn the output files created by iMovie but they won't play in a DVD player or with the DVD Player application. QuickTime Player should play them. DVD Player will only play a movie, from the hard drive or a DVD, after it has been processed into DVD format.

  • Disk images not mounting

Here's the question: how come .dmg files downloaded from apple.com (amongst other places) won't mount?
Here's the detail: This has to be a FAQ going by Google searches. I've downloaded the Mac Firefox DMG 3 times, and the Safari DMG from apple.com once, and when I try to mount the images I get a range of different cryptic errors, including "codec overrun", "not recognized", "error -some number or other", and so on. Sometimes, I get two different errors for the Safari image.
Existing disk images on my hard drive mount fine. Today my hard disk has been playing up, with files being corrupted, keychain being broken, prefs disappearing, and so on. I boot from the Tiger DVD, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk, tells me no repairs carried out as all hunky dory. Use Disk Utility on the HD to check permissions, those are fine. Run Onyx maintenance, all is fine. I've not changed the router prefs at all, so it's not that corrupting the downloads.
All was fine until mid-afternoon today, when a number of apps (Firefox, Safari, Dreamweaver) started behaving strangely and the machine kept on hanging. On restart a number of taskbar icons became question marks, so something's being corrupted. Some downloaded PDFs became corrupted.
What I might try to do is download DMGs from my work PC, put them on a stick, and try to mount them. If the problem recurs then that would eliminate download errors.
My conclusion is that either the OS has become damaged, or the HD is physically fubar'd, or at least has some physical errors on it somewhere which DU isn't picking up. If the latter I'm screwed as I'm out of warranty and I might as well chuck the machine in the bin, so let's hope it's the OS. I could reinstall the OS (again) but a) that would be highly time-consuming as I'd also have to reinstall a shedload of apps, prefs, configs, etc, and b) if there's a physical HD error it'll do zero.
I've already spent some fruitless and frustrating hours today on diagnosis, and having done tech supp in my career I know what to look for, so this is my last throw of the dice to try to get some kind person to suggest a) a diagnosis, and b) suggestions for a cure.
Without a cure I might as well take a clawhammer to the thing and get a Linux laptop. Ok, PCs are far inferior to Macs with crappy hardware, but at least you don't lose over a thousand quid when your PC laptop fails.

I was able to get a partial fix of this problem by following instructions that I found on the All Experts web site:
Regarding disk images and mounting media:
delete the following files and folders:
    * /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache (file)
    * /System/Library/Extensions.mkext (file)
    * /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches (folder)
(Note that after deleting these files you need to reboot your Mac for the fix to take effect.)
All of these files and folders were date 18 Aug 2009, which is in around the timeframe when I installed the last security update for OS10.4 ppc.
I say the solution is a partial fix, because it did allow me to open some, but not all .dmg files (the problematic ones are showing a checksum error). Now I find that iTunes will not operate (yeah I know that should be another thread), but I have not used it in several weeks, prior to the last OS update.

  • Problems burning DVD from iDVD disc image

I'm burning a disc image onto a DVD using Toast and can't seem to get the disc to automatically start or be read by either my home DVD player or my Powerbook G4 (through DVD player). I'm a little unclear if I burn the .img folder onto the DVD, the mounted drive containing the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS files, or the AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS files themselves. I've tried all of these and none have worked, which made me think that it was something wrong with my DVDproj file from whence the disc image was made.
Do I have to have something in the box labeled "Drag content here to automatically play when disc is inserted" in teh MapView? I'd prefer it to just bring up the DVD menu.
    Thanks!

    Pre edit:
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Video freezes when burning disc image

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem when making a disc image? I created movie in imovie and saved it as a dv (which I do all the time). After creating an idvd menu, etc., I save it as a disc image. But when I test the movie in dvd player, it works for a while (in this case about 8 min) and then the video freezes. I can still hear it though.
I did a few others a couple months ago and they were fine. This movie is 1 1/2 hours and another was 1/2 hr. and both froze about the same times.
I don't know if it's a system error that may just need idvd to be re-installed or something else.
If anyone has a solution to this, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your comment but the problem exists even BEFORE I burn it. I do the test from mounting the disc image and it's there. I think it's happening when idvd is encoding the movie for the disc image, but I don't know why.

  • Save As Disc Image

I made a movie using iMovie5 and was unable to burn possibly there was a software glitch with iDVD5.
So I bought iLife6 and uploaded iMovie6 and iDVD6 only.
My movie's still on the hard drive and I'd like to proceed with iDVD6. I've read through several postings on these boards and know that I should Save As Disc Image before attempting a burn.
    Three questions:
    1. When I open iDVD6 one of the themes appears with an annoying ragtime music loop. Maybe I'll use the themes in the future, but right now I'd like to dispense with them. How can I turn the themes and the music loop off?
    2. Using iDVD6 I created a new project for my existing movie. I clicked the Media button and noticed that my movie project is visible in the lower pane under Movies. That is as I expected. I played the project and all appears well. I detected no hitches. I then dragged and dropped the project into the Map pane, that is, into a box that has these words "Drag content here to automatically play when the disc is inserted." Question: Am I taking the right steps?
    3. I then clicked iDVD>File>Save As Disc Image and got a drop down box saying "There were warnings during content validation. It is recommended to fix these problems before burning the project." What does that mean in plain English? There were no further indications as to the nature of the problems, so I don't know where they're located or what to fix. How do I proceed?
    using the
    ibook g4 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    1. Select an Old Theme that doesn't have music and animation.
    2. Yes. If you want it to loop endlessly, click on that file, go to Advanced/Loop.
    3. You probably selected a theme with drop zones that you haven't filled. An image should encode OK if that's the case. It did for me when I didn't want to fill those DZs.

  • Help opening disc image video

    Hey guys,
I recently saved an imovie project of mine as a disc image and cannot figure out how to open it and view the project. Can someone assist me in doing so?

VLC can handle ISO disc image.

And if your disc image is MPG2 dmg or ISO, just double click it to mount and play with DVD Player.

  • Time machine backup blocked; disc image sparse bundle needs ejecting

Team, I cannot backup to 2Tb time machine; error message as above. How do I 'eject' this disc image and what exactly is it?
    Thanks
    Nick B

OK, we fixed this for now with the simple, but common Mac way of
    throwing something in the trash.
In this case it seems to be a temporary network connection to the remote Time Machine partition. When Time Machine balks, the icon for the temporary mount gets stuck on the Desktop. We threw it in the trash (unmounting it) and then Time Machine can resume.
Apple networking is annoying, but then on the other, it's easy. We lose printing in a similar way.
Anyway, although we seem to be OK, I'd like to understand this a bit better. I can see in the "/Volumes" folder (in Terminal) three Time Machine mounts, not one as I would have expected, and they all appear to point to the same place:
    drwx------   9 root                   wheel  264   Jun 22 10:23 TM-2
    drwx------   9 root                   wheel  264  Jun 22 10:23 TM-1
    drwx------   9 MYUSERNAME  staff   264 Jun 22 10:23 TM
On the remote machine, the disc TM appears only once.
If you look at the listing of all three, they are identical. What gives?
Is this a consequence of the fact that we are putting the time machine backups on a remote machine (that is not a Mac OS server). We have to mount the remote disc before Time Machine will run, but from that point it works perfectly -- or as perfectly as any mac networking thing seems to work.

  • Burning Disc Images

After burning a disc image, I mounted CD. On the CD, I could only see the files copied, but no evidence of disc image or .dmg file. Is this normal? I expected to see .dmg file on new CD.

The diskimage file IS the CD. You make a diskimage file and burn it to the CD, or any mountable media. At that time the diskimage is transmogrified to the media itself.
I suppose you could create a diskimage file, mount it, then copy a diskimage file to the diskimage. I don't know what the point of that would be though.
I know the diskimage concept is hard to handle, and cranky to create and manage. But the idea of a virtual disk is very useful, and Apple made a good decision to adopt it.

  • Burn-ed! Disc Image "write error"

Was having glitches burning dvd projects ("error multiplexing") so I created a disc image and was able to successfully burn two dvds before flaming, "burn failed because of a medium write error." I then ran a checksumming between burns, got a couple more done, then again with the "medium write error". What am I not doing?
I've been reading this month's postings re: iDVD burnings and I've gotten this far thanks to helpful submissions and responses. Two references in passing that intrigue me; how can I control burn speed (eg. x4 in Disk utility),and do you really need to take a break to cool down the laser?

Thank you for your guidance. Maybe I'm asking too much of my G5/OS 10.4.8 to burn 50 dvds for a school. I could outsource or I could buy my own burner, I suppose. Or maybe I need new software (Toast?) or a new approach. While looking for a way to control burn speed (never found it), I opened up a process called "Convert," which is a way to "quickly copy many types of dvds." Would this approach work? Meanwhile I labor on. Have burned 35 of the 50 in fits and starts (4 burn, 2 fail, and so on). And, yes, I am using good quality Verbatim.
Thanks again for your help. Appreciate any other insight you might have on multiple burns.
