Disc Images to FCP?

If I have a disc image of a movie, can I create a Quicktime movie from that to edit in FCP? Thanks.

DH,
Thank you. The disc image is a DVD-Video. I downloaded MPEG Streamclip (again, thank you), but what does 'demux' mean? And what sequence settings should I have in FCP to make sure they match? Thanks!

  • IDVD can't create disc image

I posted this in the iDVD forum and it was suggested that I also post it here, since its an FCP movie.
(I use Final Cut Studio 5) Here is my iDVD post:
(I have searched iDVD for solutions and have tried all i could find, as you'll read below, but still nothing worked for me, .....)
I made 3 movies in Final Cut, exported them as stand alone movies. (This is the way I have done it in the past)... one is 43 minutes 16:9, one is 43 minutes letterboxed, other is 9 minutes 4:3. They had chapter markers in them.
Created an iDVD project, widescreen format. Added the movies ( both by dragging and dropping and by 'add movie' command) and created a slideshow, with added audio.
I 'Save as disc image' so i can burn several copies. This I have done a lot of times, in the past.
Since Friday last, every attempt has given me an error: Multiplexor Error ...There was an error during muxing preparation (Project conversion) is the most common one. (I don't know how to access Terminal for more details)
    I have tried:
    • I first encoded at Professional setting .... error message
    • changed the encoding to High (to fit all three movies) ... read here that the Multiplexor error was due to the app not calculating the size right ... same error
    • removed the plist ... same
    • moved files off my hard drive for more space ... same result
    • removed the letterboxed movie to decrease size: same error
    • chapters: idvd did not recognize the FCP chapters (never had this problem before) so added ones in iDVD ... same error
    • removed idvd chapters... same result
    • went back to FCP and removed the chapters and re-exported the movies .. same result
    • change encoding to Best Performance (only 2 movies and slideshow now) ... same result
    • changed the theme ... same
    • removed the theme's audio... same result
    • reinstalled idvd ... same
    • brought the movies into iMovie, added chapters and exported (as QT movie to DV stream) ... same error, and the chapters disappeared again
    • saved the dvdproject in the Documents folder on my hard drive (thought this would do the trick as it had been on an external) ... same error
    I don't know what's left to try!!
I'm doing all the things that I used to do but am having no positive results . The only thing that I have changed since the last dvd I made (a year ago) is upgrade to Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Can anyone help me ... please? This is a commemorative project that is needed for an association's archive, so I can't not do it. I'm just at my wit's end and don't know what other measures to take. (other than use DVD Studio, and don't know how!)
    Thank you
    Elizabeth
    Added FCP info:
movies were exported using QT conversion
    Format: QT Movie, default settings
Options: size: NTSC 720x480 4:3 (for small movie)
Settings: Best; Keyframes Automatic; H.264, 29.97 fps; no internet streaming.
For 16:9 movie: same, but Size: Current (630x354)

.... so when you all were telling me to use Compressor and DVD Pro, I went to the local McNally-Robinson and checked out the resources there.
Found a Mac Genius book on FCP, which lightly touches on compressor, and an Apple Pro training book on DVD Pro 4, which also touches a bit on Compressor but gives specific instructions on settings to get me started (and which i have since experimented with).
So I naturally bought them and have been reading in steps and then going to work. (That's why i haven't replied to you: wanted to be able to give you a report.)
    Since last week I have
    • compressed 2 movies, and recompressed the main one several times to fine tune the quality
    • made a dvd pro project (and 'saved as' in various versions and configurations) that has:
    • a 16:9 video with chapters, added in dvd pro
    • a 4:3 video with chapters( Dvd pro) converted to individual stories
    • a slideshow
    • a folder added to the dvd-rom with the photos used in the slideshow
    • an intro menu with my own livetype generated background movie (also used in the video)
    • the dvd template used changed to 16:9 instead of 4:3 aspect
    • 3 chapter menus for the 16:9 movie
    • a story menu for the 4:3
    • background music, different for different menus
    • remote control connections, for the tracks and the menu (that all work) (except for one problem that I have posted in the DVD forum)
    • built and formatted a few of the configurations to make disc images that then played in dvd player (but haven't burnt to disc yet as i am waiting to solve the final 'menu' button problem)
Haven't done scripts or layered menus, or subtitles yet, and none of my work uses alternate angles, but i think I've got a fairly good handle on this now. And I think I'll use DVD Pro and Compressor from now on .... they're great and DVD pro is much more able to be individualized.
I still need to experiment more with Compressor, tho', and to learn more about the compression codecs.
(I don't like the quality of the Livetype segments in the 'send to QT' option form FCP, they're blurry. And the 'using Compressor' videos have nice crisp text, but there are residual lines in the edges of things wherever there is movement. I always set the Motion Estimation as 'best', and 2 pass VBR Best, and in the last one I tried, i set the Average bit rate at 7.6, max 8.9 and the GOP to IBP, size 7.
Doesn't seem any different from the others, just a teeny bit larger in size. But i'm happy with it for now, no more time to tinker with this part on this project.)
So thank you all for your help, and i will now start posting any problems with this (or any other) project to the other forums. (but I'll check back here again in case you have another bit of advice for me

  • Multiplexer error--can't burn disc image from iDVD

Originally FCP. to QT. To iMovie. Added chapters--left auto-generated numerals. Imported to iDVD thru Media Browser..
Film is 53 minutes plus menu (includes 3 minute silent footage in single drop box).
console reports the error as : "7/12/10 9:22:56 AM [0x0-0x418418].com.apple.iDVD[49872] terminate called after throwing an instance of 'M2V::Exception'"
    What is an M2V::Exception?
Is the only work-around to drop out the chapters? And will that work. I have done Disk Repair and Restart.

I redid the movie without chapters. It wrote the disc image.
Now it is not writing to re-writable DVD. Here is what console said:

  • Trouble burning Blu-ray or disc image using Share

I have a project I have tried to burn to a Blu-Ray disc and to the hard drive as a disc image using Share>Blu-ray. I have burned successfully before to the same Blu-ray burner with other projects. But now when trying to burn a disc I get this error after a day of transcoding:
The operation couldn’t be completed. (DSPPublishing error -1024.)
When I try to save it as a disc image it tells me there is not enough space on the disc even though there is over a Terabyte empty. The project is estimated as 21.6 gig so I know it should fit on the 25 gig bluray and of course on the hard drive. Trashing prefs did not work either. This is a very frustrating process as each attempt takes a day to transcode before the error pops up and you have to start all over again.
    I am using
    iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
    16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    FCP X 10.0.6
    OS X 10.8.2

This is the error message I get. It's after FCP X is done with making the BMV folder and runs that disc burner app. There is about 850 gigs on the drive I want to save the disc image to, lots of space.
I thought maybe the drive the events was on was affecting this process, because it was full. I cleared out about 30 gigs and still got this message.
I never had any problems creating a Blu-ray disc image before. That's the optimcal way, IMHO, because you can burn the BD in Toast as the disc image and Toast won't reencode or do anything, it just burns the disc image and the disc has played on ever Blu-ray player I've tried it on.
    Anyone have any more ideas?
    Thanks

  • Making Playable DVD From Disc Image

A friend of mine has an iDVD project but his mac cannot burn dvds. So he gave me the file as a disc image. I dragged and dropped the disc image to the dvd and hit burn. It does not play as a dvd in a player or in frontrow on my mac. When I double click on it the disc image is on the dvd. Did I make a data dvd instead? How do I make a playable dvd from a disc image?
Also, is going the disc image route the easiest way to transfer an iMovie or iDVD project to another mac. I did it this way because my mac does not have some of the music or photos on it that are linked to the project file. In Garage Band you can save as archive when transferring a file to another mac and it saves all the loops, etc in the file. There must be something similar in iDVD.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Paul

So he gave me the file as a disc image. I dragged and dropped the disc image to the dvd and hit burn.
    Paul,
Video DVDs are written in the UDF format. That's why you must use Apple's Disk Utility to burn a disk image to writable media correctly.
In burning from the Finder, you have created a data DVD in Mac OS Extended format that will NOT play in set-top DVD players (as you have found out).

  • Disc image too large

    Hi all,
new to fourm.it is a great service.my question is that i am having some problems with skipping/freezing dvd discs. a few have come back from clients, not very good!! i understand about burn speeds and discs. so i am trying to burn a disc image to dvd 1hr 48mins to a single layer disc but the saved file from idvd is too big 5.3G. I thought that a movie umder 2hrs would fit on a single disc. I have just used a simple idvd project.I can burn it direct to disc and it will do it.
Also can you delete the captured media once you have created a disc image?
    thanks all and best wishes
    g5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Andy
108 minutes is less than 120 minutes. Then You have to add the material You
put into the building of the DVD menu.
All included should be less than 120 minutes. No: Gb does not have ANY relevance
    for iDVD.
But probably You have selected the wrong kind of Quality.
    - Best Performances = less than 60 min
    - Best Quality = less than 120 min.
Backwards Yes but it's like this.

  • Disc image form a double layer DVD fails

I am trying to make a disc image from a double layer DVD in Disc Utility (os 10.5.1) so I can burn another copy (I burned the disc I am copying from, so it should not be encrypted or anything) and it has an i/o error part way through each time I try, I am guessing it is hitting the double layer splice point and not knowing what to do or something.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
There is a far fetched solution - but far from perfect.
(Best You can do is as Old Toad writes - Make it SL from start)
    But anyhow
    • in iDVD Save as a DiskImage
    • Then use Roxio Toast™ and copy the DiskImage to a new SL-DVD - BUT also select Fit-on-DVD.
Now Toast will re-compress (takes sever amount of time) so that the material will fit (up to 10 hours on a SL-DVD)
BUT there are several Cons. to this
    • Roxio Toast™ is not free - nor is it cheap
    • Takes a long time to do
    • Resulting DVD will look poor (Much worse than a SL-DVD from iDVD from start)
    (A 10 hour SL-DVD - looks like crap)
So Yes it's technically possibly - But I can not motivate it at all.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Disc Image will not mount after format

I am trying to create a disc image from DVD Pro so that I can burn the final project at a low speed to avoid burn errors. Whenever I try to burn the image to DVD in Disc Utility it says that the file is not recognized. I have even tried to start the project from scratch and still am getting the same error message. Another weird thing that DVDSP is doing that is odd is when I am build and format, the log shows a ton of error messages saying that random files will not be included on the final DVD. Please help, I cannot figure oout what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks,
    Leon

    Leon:
Warning: The file ‘2007KIAC_BBTOURNY.layout’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
These are standard wraning. Nothing to take care about.
After deleting the old build empty your trash and try again. If DVDSP ask to reuse, you must be building to another location than where you think. Check that.
    Hope that helps !

  • Disc image and mounting question .

Disc utility - file - new > blank disc image . Save as ( so so ) . Volume name (so so ) . Volume size (4.5 gb dvd-r/dvd-ram. ) . Volume format ( mac os extended journal ) . Encryption ( none ) . Partition (cd dvd ) Image format ( spars bundle disc image )
I do this and I get two icons on desk top . One looks like the hard drive symbol and will say so so .sparsebundle . Then under it is an icon that looks like an external cd player or the like . And will say the image name under it .
When I open the image icon and put my files into it I close it and burn it to dvd . After it is finished I try to open it and it says it cant be mounted . So I tried the hard drive looking one just above it and nothing . So I could eject the icons but not the dvd . She says I should try closing application and try again . Cant find anything to close so I restart and can eject the dvd then . I put it back in and same thing so I restart and get it back out . Now I start all over a new and just before I burn I leave the folder open and click edit select all the file the burn selected items to disc and vwula every thing
    s ok .
Now after you have read all this , my question is (1) What is the top icon for ?
    (2) Is this normal ?
    (3) Can I keep asking questions like this to learn my mac . I do search the forums and they are quite helpful Thank you for your time .

    Plymouth Horizon,
I will do my best, First Why are you making a sparse image and then burning? To Me this seems like extra work. What you can do is make a Burn Folder, add the things you want burned and then burn it. It will add Icons for the stuff in it with an alias Icon but it will burn the file not just an alias. I personally only use the images when I want to secure something with a password, or store files I've downloaded.
I would say that its normal, in the case that your making the image on your desktop. The reason you have the two 'Icons' is one is the image and the other is the mount of the image. Think you downloaded a .dmg file you have the file in your downloads folder and the icon on your desktop, you trash them both to get rid of.
And you are more then welcome to keep asking questions here, that is what these forums are for.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

  • Copying a disc image

I created a disc image from iDVD to burn a movie. All that worked fine. I put the disc image on my desktop. I am now through and would like to copy the image to an external drive for archive. I keep getting "error code 0." I have tried several different methods to accomplish this with the same results.. Please help. thanks.

The size of the disc image is the source of your problem. A drive that is formatted as FAT32 cannot contain a single file that is more than 4GB in size. You need to split the image into smaller pieces or reformat the drive in order to copy the disc image to it.

  • Disc image file & CSS encoding?

I originally exported a project with CSS encoding from DVDSP to a DLT tape for replication. (DDP 2.0 with CSS)
I then created a disc image file of this project and don't remember if I had checked CSS format. Is there a way to determine this by looking through the Video_TS folder or possibly another way.
    thanks,
    dave

    Dave,
Disc Images, per se, cannot have CSS applied to them (they're fixed at 2048 bytes per sector). This is so you can write the Image to DVD-Recordables - which is not allowed to have CSS on them, or mount the Disc Image on various machines; again, no CSS allowed in that application.
For sure, Disc Images do have CSS applied to them, but this is only during DDP 2.0, DDP 2.1, or CMF formatting. Though then, you'll have an unplayable Disc Image in that case, until the replicator applies the unscrambling keys during mastering.
So, if you left the CSS option on, it would have no affect (setting ignored) if formatting a regular "img" to hard drive or Recordable.
    Take care,

  • Disc image file exported from Encore CS4 won't work

    Hello,
I have a problem concerning the export of a disc image file in Encore CS4. I recently upgraded to CS4 and wanted to continue my project which I started editing with CS3. While working with CS3 I already did image files from this project for burning and testing the DVD. Back then it worked with no problems.
However, since using the CS4 version Encore does the image without any problem, but I can't use the image file in any way afterwards. I mounted it with Daemon Tools as I did before, but the DVD won't play in any software DVD player I have installed (Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, Nero Showtime) nor can I access the file structure over a file manager. Nevertheless NeroInfoTool and ImgBurn say there is a DVD in the virtual drive. Then I exported the DVD project into a folder and now I can see the files in the file manger but again no player will play it.
Has anyone experienced this before and is able to help? It would be very appreciated since I don't want to downgrade back to CS3 :-)
It's Encore CS4, Version 4.0.1.048 on a 2,8 GHz HT CPU, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 6800 UT, lots of HDD space, XP + SP3.
    Thank you,
    Chris...

    Hey,
thank you both. As I said no player accepts the project exported to a folder. It doesn't matter if I point the player to the video_ts.ifo or just the folder - it won't play. As a consequence I re-installed Encore CS3 in which exporting worked fine and guess what - the exported image and folder output doesn't work either. Since it worked before in CS3 it comes down to the conclusion that either I did some editing to the project that screwed the project or Encore CS4 did. Checking for mistakes in the project and previewing in inside CS4 everything seems fine. So might it be CS4 that ****** up the project file??? I mean it's full of strange bugs so it could easily be that. I even updated my Daemon Tools yesterday and it won't make a difference.
Or could it be something else I haven't considered yet? Any ideas? I just don't want to build the whole project again which might not even work if it's some other error. This is a desperate call for help
    Thanks,
    Chris...

  • Why did F4 beta uninstall itself after I put MacBook to sleep and had to be rebooted from the disc image?

I put my MacBook to sleep with Firefox 4 beta open and when I went to use it again it had vanished. My spotlight search yielded v. 3.6 and the v.4 beta installation file (.dmg). I opened v. 3.6 and declined to transfer v4 Add-ons . All tabs that were opened on v.4 beta opened on v. 3.6. I closed 3.6 and reinstalled v.4 beta from the disc image. I was warned to replace previous version (3.6) - which I did. V4 beta installed intact (bookmarks, add-ons, history etc.) but I lost my open tabs. My only concern is that I was required to replace v. 3.6 and don't want to risk losing bookmarks and history if v. 4 proves unstable. I am otherwise pleased with the new look and performance.

Yes, your iPhone has the classic signs of early onset Alzheimer's...
Assuming that nothing is pressing on the Home button when this occurs, try the basic steps as needed:
    1. Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.
    2. Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
    3. Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup.
If #3 doesn't help, there is a hardware problem such as a defective home button, and you should make an appt. with an Apple Store Genius bar.

  • Restore PSE 3 from a disc image to a re-formatted hard drive

I have Windows XP SP3 etc; Photoshop Elements 3.01; Acronis True Image 11; a 200GB hard drive (for images, audio, etc), a 250 GB hard drive for video storage and 500GB extl hard drive for backup of both hard drives. Some time ago I made a PSE backup onto the extl drive and a couple of incremental backups. I also have a disc image of both drives on the extl drive. With backup disc free space getting scarce I made a new full PSE backup and then deleted the original backups. To cure a number of conflict problems (due to multiple copies of Windows on both hard drives!) I re-formatted C drive and reinstalled the software, including PSE 3. I tried to restore my images and PSE catalog by means of PSE Restore from the PSE Backup; but after a while it asked me for discs/backups 2 and 3 - the ones I had deleted. All of the images are restored onto the C drive, but only a few tags - no Collection detail. Using Aconis I can mount the original disc image of the C drive, and the jpeg/CR2 and catalog psa files are in the usual place. However, file paths are somewhat different between the mounted copy of the C drive and the present actual C drive. Can anybody please advise me how to proceed from here? Is it just a case of using PSE 3 to move the catalog psa file from the Acronis mounted image into the C drive? The problem seems similar to the various threads that I've read on transferring to a new computer with PSE 7, but I am reluctant to "move" (as distinct from "copy") files from the Acronis image without some advice. Can anybody please offer some advice?

    Hi dj_paige
Thanks a lot for the answer to my problem.  Having resolved my problem with Acronis I then followed your instructions; the images and catalog with Collections etc are now fully restored.  Thanks again for your help.

  • Problems burning DVD from iDVD disc image

I'm burning a disc image onto a DVD using Toast and can't seem to get the disc to automatically start or be read by either my home DVD player or my Powerbook G4 (through DVD player). I'm a little unclear if I burn the .img folder onto the DVD, the mounted drive containing the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS files, or the AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS files themselves. I've tried all of these and none have worked, which made me think that it was something wrong with my DVDproj file from whence the disc image was made.
Do I have to have something in the box labeled "Drag content here to automatically play when disc is inserted" in teh MapView? I'd prefer it to just bring up the DVD menu.
    Thanks!

    Pre edit:
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)
