"Disc is too slow.  Prepare 100001" message??

Using GarageBand has caused me a few crashes lately and I am getting the above error message frequently. Is my Mac about to break? Thanks in advance.

We see a similar message all the time over in the Logic audio forum. Garageband is a subset of Logic Pro using the same basic underlying technology.
This usually means that the program cannot pull all of the data (audio samples or recorded audio) off the disk in time. However, it can also mean that the CPU was tied up with DSP processing (reverb, chorus...etc) and couldn't devote enough cycles to handle Input/Output without a data error.
It can also mean your hard drive is running low on free space
As Douggo mentions.... it would be helpful to know more about the Garageband song that's causing this to happen.
One thing you can do is set the audio buffer to a larger size... with in Garageband is called, Optimize for more tracks... or something like that.

  • CoreAudio: Disk is too slow (Prepare)   error message?

    Hi,
In a Logic project I'm currenly working on, each time I open the file and press play for the first time, Logic hangs for 15 seconds or so and gives me this error message:
CoreAudio: Disk is too slow. (Prepare)
    (-10001)
If I then stop, rewind and play again everything works fine. It only happens after this specific project is first opened and played.
Any ideas what this could be about? Disk is definitely not too slow. I get the same error if I start at a one track passage or bypass all effects and then play.
The file in question contains imported AIFF files, imported MP3 files as well 100 or so MIDI tracks.
    Logic version is 7.2.1.
    Thanks,
    Maarten

It's in the energy saver preferences, uncheck spin down drive when idle thing.
HOWEVER, I posted this in another post, there is a bug where external firewire drives are still getting spun down with this checked off. I reported the bug to apple, they asked for more info, they said thanks, and last I checked the bug was still open, which tells me it wasn't reported before, and they're actually working on it.
So don't be surprised if unchecking the box doesn't fix it for your external drives.
The trick I use to get around it is simply double click the file on the external drive to open the song. That spins the drive up pretty good because you have to open a finder window which has to list all the folders etc...
    hope this helps.

  • I'm getting "the disk is too slow (prepare)" message

I'm getting "the disk is too slow (prepare)" message when trying to do literally anything in garageband right now, even with all other programs shut down, correct energy saver settings, and only one audio track in garageband.
Everything else on my macbook pro is running fine, iMovie, Safari, etc... so it seems like a garageband problem to me. I updated garageband, have reset computer multiple times, I don't know what else to do... it feels like garageband is keeping all of my recent projects open in the background at once, but when I check my windows, that is apparently not the case.  Any help?

Anyone have any ideas to help?

  • Core Audio : Disk too slow (prepare)

Can anyone help me. I have created a track that will not bounce
because it always comes up with this error message: Core Audio: disk
too slow (prepare). I cannot bounce tracks individually for the same
reason. I have tried deleting some tracks that i dont need but it still does
the same. I have 700 and something ram. Is this not enough. I have
logic pro 7.1 and am using a few ultrabeats in the song. Know Any
tricks i can get around this problem easily with. Any help would be
    greatly apreciateddd. thanx in advance.

The drives in the rear positions are on an ATA-100 Bus, those in the front are on an ATA-66 bus. The CD is on an ATA-33 bus, and no Hard drives should be sharing the CD cable. ATA-66 and ATA-100 are plenty fast enough not to be a bottleneck, as long as you are not experiencing low-level correctable Disk Errors.
A Disk Error will result in retries, both Hardware and Software, which often produces the data, corrected, after a delay.
My recommendation would be to find a time when you can back up all data from the troublesome drive, and take the \[several hours] to Initialize with the "Zero all Data" option. This writes Zeroes to every data block, then does a read-after-write to check the data.
If the Drive's error correction was required to recover the just-written zeroed data, that block is declared bad, and the drive will make a near-permanent substitution of a nearby spare block for the one found defective. This process has the effect of laundering out marginal blocks and returning the drive to "factory fresh" condition of all good blocks.

  • GARAGE BAND disk is too slow. (prepare) (-10001)

Hi, Im trying to edit some mp3 files in separated tracks in GB on my NEW Macbook Air 2013 with 4gb ram and 128 flash drive, this files are between 170mb and 221 MB, so this message comes on: disk is too slow. (prepare) (-10001) garageband... what can i do? The files are MP3. What could be the problem? the 4gb of RAM? the 128gb ssd? Thanks!

How much free disk space do you have? Keep at least 10 GB disk space free for the operating system as working space,  better more.
Try to lock all tracks that you are currently not using, while you are editing.
Close all other applications and reboot, before starting to work.
If the problem persists, you may have a problem with incompatible audio drivers. Then I'd test from a different user account, to check, if there is a general problem.

  • Error mesaage: disc is too slow

My system keeps stoping and Im geting error message (-10010) disc is too slow or overloaded
    whats the fix?

The "disk to slow" error occurs, when GarageBand needs more memory for real time processing.
It usually helps to restart the Mac before recording - this will free all available RAM at once.
And do not run any other applications concurrently, that like to hog memory, like Safair, iPhoto, iMovie.
Is your project on an external drive? Connect the drive to the fastest port you are having. Don't daisy-chain the connection.

  • ?"Disc is too slow" error?

During recording of a song (4 simultaneous real instrument tracks via usb interface) GB cut out on me and left me with the error message "Disc is too slow".  Assuming this means the hard drive, does anyone know why this happened or steps to prevent it.  We were 4 mins plus into the song, and what we got sounds fine, just got cut off.
I was thinking maybe I need a buffer setting adjustment.  I thought I remembered seeing a way to change buffer size in exchange for delay in monitors.  I could not find that function when looked today.   Any thoughts on this aspect?
Thanks for any help you have

  • Disc is too slow or system overload

"Disc is too slow or system overload"
right in the middle of a project. stupid question. what can i do? won't even play. can't even bounce it.

Was dealing with that, among other system/disk response issues last weekend. This weekend I researched it extensively and found 2 things that, knock on wood, so far have seemed to resolve my issues. One Mac white paper suggested that when using an external drive, you must format it as MAC Extended, and NOT include journaling. This paper was dated in 2006, but the theory made sense to me, so I tried it. BTW, it also emphasizes that you NOT get rid of journaling on the main HDD of the computer. The other thing I stumbled across was a little download calls "ProKitUpdate 4.5". It is supposed to make your 'professional' apps run smoother. I also downloaded and installed that. I then set up a test with 8 inputs, recording at 48K x 24 bit (what I was doing weekend before last), and recorded for about 2 hours. During that test, I had no beachballs, no dropouts, no 'disk is too slow' errors, and as a matter of fact, no errors at all. At this point, I'm feeling more comfortable with the setup, but am still planning on some more testing before I assume the problem won't happen again.

  • Hi i use a macpro i7 wt 7200rpm internal drive i get this message Disk is too slow-(prepare) (-10001) when i am using logic 9

Hi i use a macbook pro 17" 2.66ghz intel core i7 with 8gb ram & a 500gb@7200rpm internal drive i get this message "Disk is too slow. (Prepare)  (-10001) when i am using logic 9 wiyh just a 5 vsts loaded 2 of them being esx24's . i used to not get this warning earlier in the same or even heavily loaded projects.
When i press play the beachball appears for a minute or so then the message.
Even when i open up a new project a beachball appears for about 30-40 secs and then the project opens up
i have even tried opening up the projects w/o any vst's loaded (i have disabled them from audio units manager)
Initially i thought it was a hard drive problem so apple had it replaced for me but i am still encountering the same problem.
have even tried disabling the sudden motion sensor from terminal no luck there too
tried reloading osx 10.6.7 no luck there too
    what do i do

  • Disc is too slow. (record) (-10004) help!!

i got this message the other day for the first time...
    CoreAudio:
    Disk is too slow. (Record)
    (-10004)
i was recording my band with two room mics just for fun the other day and this happened about three times. I was recording straight to the hard drive of my macbook pro because i did not bring my external drive. i was using a firepod connected via firewire 400. i was recording only two channels of audio for the two room mics and no plug-ins except for maybe one EQ on a track. does anyone know about this kind of error message and what it entails?? if i knew how to post a picture i would put up a picture of my audio driver settings. maybe i am doing something wrong there. i was recording our drummers drums the other day with 4 mics equaling 4 tracks and this did not happen, but i was not recording nearly as long. does anyone possibly have any advice??? if i was too vague in description i will answer any questions...

    Couple things -
Recording to the internal drive is never a great choice but you shouldn't have problems recording 2 tracks, or even 4. Is you disk getting full? I would try to make sure I have at least 10% of the drive open (4GB free on a 40GB drive, for example).
Check your maximum record time by pressing the "A" key and set it to the lowest usable value. 15 mins. is a good start, esp. if you have limited drive space, like when recording to the internal HD.
Enable the Larger Disk Buffer in the Audio Prefs. This always seems to work for me.
Is all your software up-to-date? Are your fire pod drivers current?
Check your RAM. Apple Menu-> About This Mac -> More info. Bad RAM is a common problem, often overlooked.
    That's all I got...

  • Disk is too slow (Record) error message

    Hello there.
I've been using GB for 18 months now and have only few issues.
One issue I've had from time to time is an error message during recording. This in the past has meant that unless I'm paying attention to the screen, we can loose an awful lot of material.
It happened again this weekend and I managed to grab a screen shot.
    The error message reads
    "Garage Band
    Disk is too slow. (Record)
    (-10005)"
    I'm using a 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB Ram.
I'm recording to my internal Hard Drive which has over 90gig of free space.
I'm currently recording through an F-Control Firewire device, but I would also get this error when I used to use USB headsets.
Has anyone seen this error or have an idea whats causing this I'd love to know. Its always a pain having to be conscious that it could happen at any points, detracts from getting into the full flow of the conversation.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

All these data has nothing to do with your disk speed! This is measured in rpm, and an external disk with at least 7200 rpm might alleviate your problem.
What is your disk's speed? And how many tracks are you handling simultaneously?

  • The servers gets too slow with JMS Messages

    Hi all,
Look, Im usin JMS services, with MDB, and work good. Also i kepp a Queue to wronly messages (basiclly for comunications between R3 and Portal). Thats messages have seted a "Time to Live" equals to one day, so, they dissapair when this time are completed. But for some reasson, my server gets too slow and show exeptions of Time Out. Maybe the messages are not "killed" really, and consume memory from the server or some like that.
The think are, that im deleting manually the Queue from the Visual Administration, later than this, the process back to keep the execution time and gets faster.
If some know some or had this same trouble, please help me...
    Thanks in advance,
    Jorge.

I see. Thanks for your advice
I always had this setting on my previous devices (Sony Xperia X10 pro, Samsung Galaxy Slll) and thought it wouldn't do anything. It just got slow when it actually was updating.
Now I turned that setting off, the wifi worked quite long again (10min) but then it was gone. Unfortunately.

  • Disk Is Too Slow (prepare)

    Hi All,
I see this error message when trying to start playback sometimes.
I get the beach ball for about 10 seconds, then the above message.
it may do this several times.
if i leave it a while, a few seconds, maybe re-locate in the track, it will play fine.
yes, a heavily loaded session, but not heavy on Disk I/O.
track plays fine, except when this happens. have seen this on several sessions.
does anyone actually know what this error means? (prepare)?
    Thanks,
    James.

I think this is a glitch in how logic is preparing playback vs. speed of the disk.
with so many plugs, full PDC etc, maybe it has too much to queue up to start playback?
From what I have noticed ; playback is prepared by a sub task (tread) in VM (correct me if I am wrong )

  • "disc is too slow or system overload" -- L8 and Leopard

Hi all, I'm mixing something on Logic -- a two track piece, one an a Addictive Drums drum track, and a bass with some effects from Guitar Rig 3, and L8 keeps freezing during playback with the message above ("disc to slow or system overload.") This never happened to me before. Can anyone suggest a culprit and solution?

yeah ...i've always had a dedicated firewire audio hard drive so i don't think its that....i think its the software instruments and 3rd party plugins....they're probably draining more power than usual<</div>
Right, the external hard drive only makes a difference with audio tracks.
although Addictive drums might be streaming samples from the hard drive.
You say the instruments and plugins might be draining more power than usual? Perhaps it's Logic 8 and Leopard using more CPU power than Logic 7 and Tiger. Have you had the CPU/Drive performance meters visible when the overload message appears? Is it the CPU meter that's spiking or the drive meter?

  • Logic Express "disk too slow or system overload"

    Hello,
I'm brand new to all this and have just started going through the tutorials that come on the DVD with the Mark Sitter book for Logic Pro and Express. i have a brand new MacBook Pro and can't seem to get beyond the first ten seconds of the demo song without it bogging down with an error message that reads "Core Audio: Disc is too slow or system overloaded. (-010010)". The funny thing is that the CPU meter is barely registering any activity. Any words on this for a rookie?
    Thanks.

I found some Hard Drives that seem to be super small and FW800 with a rotational speed of 7200. They're made by a company called GTech. i think it's called the Mini. Has anyone had any experience with these for my application? I have a Lacie but was hoping to keep the system a bit more concise.
    Thanks,
