Disc Jammed in Super Drive

Any suggestions for forcing a DVD out of my computer? I tried the eject button on my key board (the drives makes a noise like it will open, but doesn't), tried holding down the eject button when I reboot, and tried the paper clip trick. Nothing works. The disk must be in there wrong, because it isn't mounting on the desktop.
Thanks!

I had the same problem last week with a 3 year old PowerMac G5 and was told to plug in a USB mouse and start the computer from off position -- holding the mouse button down while it is powering up. The drive opened quickly but closed even faster--so be ready to grab the disk.
Let me know if it works for you too.

  • How do you eject a disc from USP Super Drive?

How do you eject a DVD from the USB Super Drive?  Under Controls, Command E doesn't seem to work.  Thanks. Patrick

Drag drive from desktop to trash or in finder right click on the drive and select eject or push eject key on keyboard if you have it.

  • Non-Standard Disc Burning With Super Drive

So I read this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
Then I got one of those 80mm to 120mm CD adapters and loaded my 80mm disc into the drive. No problems what-so-ever inserting or ejecting.
So here's the problem: It won't burn. After spinning it around for a bit, it spits it out. Every application from Toast to iDVD to iTunes.
Is this a limitation of the drive? Will it NOT even try to write a disc smaller than 120mm? Nor will it play the discs. DVD-R nor CD-R.
Is there a way to tell it to write a smaller disc? My old tray burner will read and write 80mm discs either in the adapter or not. So it seems to be strictly a hardware issue, which is too bad as the Superdrive blows my external out of the water ...

Wow! You guys are something. 80mm to 120mm adapters are common. They are not hard on the drives at all! What could be hard on them!? It's a piece a plastic that clips onto the 80mm drive and turns it into a standard 120mm disc. AND nobody said Apple was the only slot loader that didn't accept 80mm discs.
Also, there would be no change to the hardware at ALL! The laser presently reads from the inside out. Clip on an adapter so the hardware draws the 80mm disk in just like a 120mm disk. The hardware spins the disc from the center hole just like a 120mm disc. The laser reads the disk starting from the center just like a 120mm disc. What's happening is the drive's firmware, or OS X's drive software must be telling it to ignore the smaller disc capacities of 80mm discs. Otherwise the 80mm disc in its 120mm adapter spins quietly in my drive no differently than a normal 120mm disc. It is not hard on the equipment. However, after the drive reads it, it spits it out, no differently than inserting a pre-recorded disc when trying to burn a blank one.
My guess is that if the drive readily recognized 80mm discs and someone succeeded at burning and/or playing them, people might be tempted to do it all the time and eventually lead to stuck discs and warranty claims no matter how careful they were.
So I'm back to this being a software issue, which should be able to be patched. I'm happy to entertain other theories, if they are more than statements of fact without any supporting arguments.

  • Two discs stuck in super drive.  Any suggestions on how to remove them.  Eject does not work

Over active 3 year old put two discs into our 13" Mid 2009 MacBook.  Hitting the eject key does nothing.  Any ideas?

Take it to an Apple retail store or AASP for professional repair.

  • No "super drive" under windows bootcamp

Windows 7, when running in Bootcamp won't register the optcal drive on my iMac 24".
I rarely use Windows via Bootcamp but when I did recently I found that it was not recognising the CD in the drive.  Windows 'Disk Management' saw the Drive but said 'No media' and it was impossible to eject the (non-existent) disk without a reboot.  This was the case with disks intended for both Windows (e.g. Half Life game) and Mac (Install disk2).  The Windows disk was readable under OS X.  Both were readable on my Windows laptop.
Is this a recurring problem with Bootcamp?  And Windows 7?  iMac superdrives?  Is it possible to sort it out from either the Mac interface or that of Windows?

    Hi Gottalight,
I've been having this problem for the past year and a half. Only recently I have found (but not a fool-proof) method of getting the super drive in bootcamp windows 7 32bit on the iMac to work.
Since my mac is an iMac 24" from late 2009, I assume this might help you.
Please note these are not "steps" but rather variables I tried that might have done something along the way.
    Variable One:
I disabled UAC in my Windows preferences, by going to:
Control Panel > User Accounts > Change User Settings > Set slider to "Never Notify". This in a sense, gives one almost full administrative control. However, please be aware that since this opens up your computer to 3rd party applications writing to your HD without your consent, that safe computer practices should be used.
    Variable Two:
Inserted the Snow Leopard (retail) DVD. The disc that holds the Bootcamp drivers. Nothing showed up, of course. However, it did not eject the disc either, which is usually the case.
    Variable Three:
Installed Windows 7 SP1 (it was long overdue), and restarted. I also had the Snow leopard disc in the super drive at the time of the restarting.
Low and behold, when the computer was done with it's restart process, and the updates were complete, I was able to access the contents of discs in the super drive.
I don't doubt this is a fluke situation, but if you're able to reproduce the solution, please let me know, so I can try and figure out which variable it is. I have a hunch it has to do with UAC, as they often interfere with the most basic of my tasks (running 3rd party apps etc.)
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers

  • Super drive no longer likes my discs

whether I insert a music cd or dvd, my super drive growls 3 times then spits out the disc. Any ideas? Need more info? Thanks.

    From the top down:
neither DU or console do anything when I insert the disc.
I had updated to 10.4.11 awhile back and did the permission thing both before and after at that time. I also repaired permissions this time (twenty minutes ago), but no help for the super drive.
The article was no help - disc is clean and flat, inserts fully, ejects when asked to, just goes "growl, growl, growl" then ejects. Yes, I've tried more than 1 disc.
I checked for any software updates, only quicktime, itunes and a security update. Didn't see anything about firmware.

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IPhoto '11- super drive failed.  It won't burn to disc.

iPhoto '11 won't burn to disc...says super drive failed.  It goes through preparing to burn and then, immediately shows "finished" and spits out the disc.  I had just finished burning another successfully.  I talked with apple and we repaired permissions for iPhoto.  It worked fine during the test, but didn't after that.
    Thanks for any help.
    Sheila

Yes.  Successfully burned to a disc.  Not only is it doing that from the top tool bar menu, but the information it shows at the bottom of the screen (MG for the burn and how full the disc is) is not accurate.  The iPhoto info shows 3.7 MG for the pictures selected, but the burn info at the bottom shows some other amount and says not enough space on the disc.  And I'm using a 4.7MG DVD!  So, now, I'm just making a burn file on my desktop and burning the disc from there.  It works fine.  However, I'd still like my iPhoto program to be working the way it's supposed to, so I can use it that way.

  • Super Drive Disc

    To Apple Community,
i think it would be better if the new Mac Book Pro with Retina Display to have a disc super drive slot so that you could play movies, burn CDs, play games e.t.c, and it would be alot more useful to the mac book users. I know that the Mac Book Pro does have a disc slot but some people prefer the other model with as it has all the special features but without it, it is less useful and you will have more people buying the older, less expensive model instead of the one with retina display. It would be more functional to use if it had a disc slot and sales for that model may go up.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
There's a problem: a SuperDrive doesn't fit into the MacBook Pro with Retina display. If you want a SuperDrive inside the MacBook Pro with Retina display, it breaks the high portability and the small weight of the Retina MacBook Pro, so it's not a valid solution. If you want a SuperDrive, buy an external optical drive (any optical drive will work) or use Remote Disc > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Super drive doesnt read disc

my super drive hasnt been reading any disc's i have tried putting them in my other mac and it works fine.. can anyone help, where i can get a new super drive and how to install it??
    thanks

I was having a few issues with my superdrive, so i opened the case and checked the connections. It works fine now. The connection is a "snap" connector, and it may have dislodged. My drive wouldn't accept a disc, but the OS thought it was working fine.
I also reseated the video connection, and it stopped the annoying "fading" in and out of the display.
I noticed some people were fixing the problem by squeasing the laptop, and this connector could be smashed back into place with some luck, but with the right tiny philips, you can easily open the cover to access the ram, and it's all right there.
