Disc not playing as created

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I can't figure this out. I have a project that contains 2 AVI assets, 1 menu item, and a timeline named 'Movie'. One of the AVI assets is a motion background, while the other is a 20 minute movie which is located on the timeline. This is the setup as seen from the flowchart:
DVD Project:
First Play: Animated Menu:Default
Override: Not Set
Title Button: Animated Menu:Default
Main Timeline: Movie
DVD Project points to the Animated Menu icon. Clicking on that brings you the following properties:
Basic:
Name: Animated Menu
End Action: Movie:Chapter 1
Override: Not Set
Default Button: 1
Offset: 0
Motion:
Video: [ this points to the motion background AVI ]
Audio: [ this points to the motion background AVI ]
Duration: 00;00;28;20
Animate Buttons is checked
Loop Point: 00;00;03;20
Loop #: 3
The menu contains 1 button, Play. This is setup as follows:
Basic:
Name: Play
Number: 1
Type: Normal
Link: Movie:Chapter 1
Override: Not Set
(none of the boxes below are checked)
Transition:
Asset: Nothing
The Animated Menu then points to the Movie (timeline) icon which is setup as follows:
Name: Movie
End Action: Animated Menu:Default
Override: Animated Menu:Default
Menu Remote: Animated Menu:Default
I think that's all the information, but if you need more, let me know.
Anyway, I can preview this whole project within Encore and it works just fine. The menu behaves as I would expect it, it loops (to where it's set) as it should, and after looping 3 times it starts the movie automatically.
However, when I build the DVD, it doesn't work properly. When played the menu comes up and runs for its duration (28 seconds and 20 frames) then it simply stops (as if you hit Stop on the player.) If I hit Play (on the player or remote) it starts up again, but at the beginning of Chapter 1.
Now, after the 20 minute movie is done playing it does go back to the menu as it should and miraculously this time the menu will loop, however it won't loop back to where I told it to, 3 seconds and 20 frames in. It loops back to 00;00.
So all in all, I have an odd DVD here and I can't figure out why it's behaving this way when burned, yet I can preview it in Encore and it works as expected.
Ideas anyone?

Aha, see, I'm not using a timeline for the menu, at all.
Okay, I'm not sitting at my production machine right now (I will later this evening) so I'm going to try to do this off the top of my head here (not that there's much room to hold any valuable data to begin with...)
Open Encore, Create a new project. Once opened, I import three items:
Import As Asset, AnimatedMenu.avi (28;20)
Import As Asset, MainMovie.avi (20;00;00 - roughly)
Import As Menu, Menu.psd
This PSD contains: background layer, a 'Play' button layer, and a Title layer. Really, nothing else.
Now, that AnimatedMenu.avi I mentioned above? It is the background layer off of the Menu.psd file, imported into Premier and a 28;20 clip placed on top in a corner, then rendered as a full frame. That 28;20 clip is completely different than what the 20 minute movie is. If I simply linked the movie to the button, it would give me the movie's poster frame, which isn't what I wanted.
Ok, moving on. Once I have the three assets in Encore, I create a new timeline and drop the MainMovie.avi on it (and leave it alone.)
I switch to my Menu tab now and I go to the Motion options. Here I link the Video and Audio to AnimatedMenu.avi. At this point the AnimateButtons is unchecked, and the loop count and point are greyed out. Since I want the menu to loop 3 times, and I want it to go specifically to 03;20 seconds into the AVI, I check the Animate Buttons and set the loop point and count. I switch back to the Basic tab and set the End Action to be Chapter 1 on the movie timeline.
Now, clicking back on the menu, or specifically the 'Play' button, I set the link to Chapter 1 on the Movie timeline. (Override is set to nothing.)
Now switching to Flowchart, I click on the movie icon and set the End Action and Menu Remote, both going back to the Animated Menu:Default. Override is once again not set.
This whole setup works within Encore, and as of the last creation of the disc late last night, it also works when played. This is the sequence of things when played:
DVD starts up and you see the menu come up and start running at 00;00. It runs till it hits 28;20 and then it loops back to 3:20, as I would expect it to. It keeps doing this for 3 times (the loop count) then it automatically moves on to Chapter 1 on the timeline and the movie starts. OR, you can also hit the Play button and it quits the menu and goes to the movie.
When the movie ends, it goes back to the menu and starts up at 00;00 again where it will run till 28;20 and then loop back to 03;20 again and the cycle repeats itself again.

  • Why doesn't my slideshow burned to disc not play on my dvd player or game devices?

Why doesn't my slideshow burned to disc not play on my dvd player or game devices?  I've created the slideshow using my Mac on OS X 10.6.8 & burned to both a CD-R & DVD disc.  The disc does work on my computer; however will not play on my dvd player, projectors or gaming devices.

Did you use iDVD to create a video DVD or did you burn a Quicktime file version of your slideshow to a DVD disk via the Finder thus creating just a data disk?
If you didn't use iDVD then that's the reason the disk won't play on those other devices.

  • Blu Ray disc not playing or loading

I recently update my Cyberlink software to Power DVD 14 Ultra.  Was playing Blu Ray discs fine and then suddenly stopped loading and playing. I contacted Cyberlink support and this is what they replied>
"In regards to your concern, after analyzing the DxDiag.txt I've found that the Display Devices are not updated since 3/10/2010, and the Sound Devices since 9/7/2010.
Please update your VGA/Sound card driver. You may contact your VGA/Sound card manufacturer or the computer manufacturer to get the latest drivers."
I checked all the drivers and all the tests said they were up to date.  How do i update my video/graphics card so I can play Blu rays again?

  • Idvd & dvd studio pro disc not playing properly in other players

    Hi
I have edited a program for the past 3 DAYS, and i have burned the program using IDVD, DVD studio pro, and Toast Titanium.
It plays ok on my G5 and my laptop G4.
And every lousy time i give the disc to the client something different goes wrong.
If it's not a lockup,it's artifacts, and programs jumping forward and backwards between scenes, by itself.
I'm using Memorex and Philips DVD discs.
My Toshiba DVD appliance deck burns the program beautifully and no hiccups.
But the customer wants the lovely menus that apple has designed
Personally i am sick and tired of apple and all the "perfect world marketing" , i had yet to burn a DVD disc with idvd or dvd studio pro with any confidence.
Apple should get into the " Bovine scatology " business, at least when that gets spread something grows despite the smell.
Anyway, i don't know if anyone can help me or not .
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you
    Vic.

While I can understand your frustration, I believe the problem here is in the encoding settings. iDVD doesn't give you much control over specific encoding settings, whereas encoding through Compressor will.
Some specific things are missing from your post. What is your workflow? How are you exporting your timeline? What format is your project (DV, HDV, DVCPRO, PAL, NTSC)? When you built your DVD in Studio Pro, what encoding settings did you use? Do you know where the encoding settings are? What are the settings for your DVD project (SD or HD)?
You would do yourself and your client good to take some time to read over proper DVD mastering workflows. It's really quite painless once you understand how things work. Blaming Apple for this is not a very helpful way to solve your problem.
The tutorial DVDs that came packaged with your install discs will also help. Just look at the lessons for DVD Studio Pro.

  • IDVD burned disc not playing in color

I took over the announcements at school this year, and we burned a DVD to play for announcements. The DVD plays fine in the room on the computer, but on the DVD player, it's in black and white. I've tried different DVDs and they're B&W also. The first DVD player I tried didn't work. This is a Sony and it's working, but no color. Suggestions?

We figured it out. The cables were plugged into the wrong slot on the DVD player. Whew.

  • I created a iMovie with photos, music and titles; shared it with the media browser and burned it on a DVD RDL. The disc will play on my MacBook Pro, but it will not play on my Samsung Blu-ray Disc Player or a smaller portable DVD player. Why?

I created an iMovie with photos, music and titles; shared it with the media browser and burned it on a DV+RDL. The disc will play on my MacBook Pro, but it will not play on my Samsung Blu-ray Disc Player or a smaller portable DVD player. Why?

Probably because they don't accept that media.
Try using Verbatim DVD+DL (if your project exceeds 2 hours) or Verbatim DVD-R if it doesn't.

  • Trying to make a disc.img from an iMovie project get the mssage that some of the audio clips are not available. The clips still show as green bars in the project but do not play.

I successfully made a disc.img and then burned a DVD of the project but found an error in a title. Went back to the project, corrected the error, and tried to create a new disc.img but got the message that some of the audio tracks were unavailable. They still show as green bars in the project but do not play. Tried deleting and reinstalling them with no success. They do play in iTunes and in the iMovie editing pane

... The goal is a ScrollPane that automatically wraps the text inside it. I've just about got it, but I have one thing that's not working. If I just put the JTextArea{s} in as the Editor, then you lose the any text that doesn't fit inside whatever the initial size was. Instead, I put the JTextAreas inside a JScrollPane which works fine, except that I still have to determine the size of the JScrollPane in advance. I would like to make each Editor/JScrollPane start out with just a single line of text and expand until it reaches a certain small number of lines.
... What am I missing?THE BASICS. See if this isn't what you are trying to do.
    import javax.swing.JFrame;

      public static void main(String[] args) {

        f.setDefaultCloseOperation(f.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
        f.setVisible(true);
}OP, your code was too long and complicated for me to compile and run. However, aren't you forgetting the two simple methods <tt>JTextArea.setLineWrap()</tt> and <tt>JTextArea.setWrapStyleWord()</tt>? Furthermore, I absolutely see no need for you to extend SWING components for demonstration this simple -- that is, if I understand your problem correctly.

  • I've burnt a slideshow of my photos onto a DVD disc but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays ok on my acer laptop. I burnt the same disc with slideshow from my old dell computer

I've burnt a slideshow of my photos on my Apple Mac to a DVD+REW disc but it will not play on my DVD player or on a combined DVD/TV. However it will play on my wife's Acer laptop. I then erased the disc &amp; burned another slideshow from my ancient Dell computer onto the same disc &amp;it played just fine on everything. So it seems the problem ids somewhere in the Apple Mac process. Any ideas?

If you want to play material on a dedicated DVD Video hardware player, you must create a DVD video disc, and you must use a DVD authoring application. The software creates files that the DVD video player can play and will burn them to a recordable DVD disc. Examples of applications are:
Roxio Toast and iSky DVD Creator
Mac's used to be supplied with iDVD authoring software but Apple discontinued it in 2011.
Thanks for that.  Will need to check iSkysoft out.  I am in the process of looking for a VisualHub replacement/backup.  Especially when it comes to ease of use.  Toast is ok.  Just looking for something along the lines of VH.

  • IDVD burns disc but they will not play back on same computer

Prior to this latest update of iDVD, I had ZERO problems with burned iDVDs. Now I can create and burn a disc in iDVD 6.0.3 but my computer refuses to recognize it as a playable disc. I put it in the drive and it spins and spins and after around 10 mins a screen pops up and says that it is a blank. But when I play it on a standard DVD player, it works fine. I recently updated Quicktime to the latest version. Something is wrong. Ah, for the days when you could call Apple about anything and they had the highest rated tech support in the world, now it can be really tough to get an answer. Can anyone give me some thoughts? Thanks, Reed

I have the same problem. iDVD disks that I burn on my G5 will play on G4's, my PC, and all consumer DVD players that I have tried them in. But they will not play on my G5 that created them, and they never have. The disk just spins for a few seconds and then ejects. It never gets recognized and never mounts. There is no error message. I regularly distribute my DVD's to 20+ people, and the disks play on all of their players, though I don't know if anyone tried to play one of my DVD's in a G5.
I use DVD-R disks, and have tried burning at slower speeds (4x)from a disk image using Disk Utility, but the disk still won't play on my G5. On the other hand, my G5 will play iDVD disks that I have burned on a G4, and it will play commercial DVD disks.
I have seen posts from other users who have complained about this problem. I have never seen a fix or a suggested solution that worked. It would be great if you have seen something on this, or have some suggestions, that might lead to a resolution. Otherwise, I can live with it.

  • Disc burned with iDVD will not play in DVD player only on MAC

I used iMovie to create a movie and then shared it with iDVD. I successfully burned the DVD through iDVD but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays fine on the iMac. It is in UDF format. After reading through posts, I saved the file as a disk image and then burned through Disk Utility. This plays fine but I would really rather burn the disc directly from iDVD. Any ideas why the DVD player says "This type of disc cannot be played"?

Media quality affects the burn errors on a disc. Computer players tend to have better error correction (to preserve digital data) - set-top DVD players tend to have poorer error correction since the are designed to play commercial, stamped DVDs with low error rates.

  • Dvd player does not play dvd disc

I've had this brand new iMac for almost 10 months.  Every time I put in a dvd, click on play and "Supported disc not available" would be shown on the screen. It's very frustrated.  But one time I took it to an Apple store to check, an Apple worker put in a Disney's dvd and it worked fine.  I brought it home and have tried to play mine.  Again, it says the same thing.  I cannot even eject the disc form that small dvd player window.  I can only eject it from the key board.  I have "Window XP" loaded in this iMac.  I wonder if the Window XP has created problem for it.  Any suggestion to help solve this probem will be greatly appreciated.  (Certainly, I can bring it back to Apple store again with my disc but it's a big job because the nearest store is hour and half away.)

  • Bluray disc showing up but not playing in Player

I have a simple project: A still menu with one button to start playing one video of 55sec and return to the menu.
I have created a dvd version of this and it works fine. Then I created the same in 1920HD format for Bluray: in Encore's preview it looks just fine and it burns without any errors to VERBATIM media. But once it's in the Samsung player ( 2500?) it shows the menu but will not react to pressing the button nor the playbutton or anything else...
What I did check so far:
    Firmware of player is current.
    Verbatim media should be fine.
I made multiple tries with other transcoding: h264 or mpg2 both ways: prerendered in Aftereffects and transcoded in Encore itself from a animation codec HD...
    no luck!
But here is the weird part:
I also made another project where there is no menu, but just an autolooping timeline and that one plays fine on the same player/media configuration and same sourcematerial.
Is there something I have missed?
Just saw some 2008 post of compatible Bluray formats, which did not include 1920/1080 at 24frames ( which is what my project is)
Do I need to make it 23.97?
Any help would be appreciated! (client is waiting!)

We always test our images by first building an image in Encore instead of a disc.
We then mount that image to a drive using Daemon Tools Lite (free pc utility).
Once the image has been mounted, its as if you just inserted it as a disc, and your software DVD/Blu-ray player will play it back. We use Power DVD 8 Ultra, as the newer versions of Power DVD Ultra (10) do not play mounted Blu-ray images.
If the image passes our quality control, we then use ImgBurn (free pc utility) to burn the image to disc. Multiple instances of ImgBurn can be opened at the same time, allowing us to burn to 3 or 4 burners at the same time, from the same image, or different images.

  • My Macbook Pro will not play a Disney DVD (Howl's Moving Castle). It says supported disc not available but it plays on my cousin's Macbook Pro.

Basically my macbook pro will not play this one DVD. It is a dvd that is fresh out of the package that I order from amazon and it is the second dvd that I have tried. Amazon sent me a new dvd when there were problems but both are not working but my laptop will play all other dvds, including the bonus dvd that came with the dvd i am trying to watch. I tried playing the dvd in my cousin's macbook pro and it worked. I already repaired discs permissions and restarted my computer but i cannot get this dvd to play for the life of me. When I put it in the disc drive the laptop buzzes for a few seconds then spits it out. When I open dvd player before hand and hit play it gives the message "supported disc is not available"

The laptop is about 2 years old, and I watch a lot of movies on it. I would think I had set the region but I could be wrong. I'm in North America wouldn't that be the preset? Also, how would you go about changing or double checking that. Also if a movie was from a collaboration of disney and studio ghibli (japanese studio) would that mean I have to change the region just for that one movie? It would be weird if it were that way because I have another movie by disney and studio ghibli, and it plays, for that matter so does the bonus feature disc that came with this movie....

  • DVD-R discs will not play on DVD Player

The DVD-R discs I made will not play on DVD Player Version 4.0.

In a nutshell the problem is the fact that the Software used by the RCA recorder is for PC.
When recording DVD's the software that is available varys greatly.
Some of the top of the line software gives options to burn PC only, MAC only, and PC or MAC combined.
It was also brought to your attention to use VLC Player on your Mac the firmware that is used with this player will sometimes allow for playing DVD's that were burned on these VHS to DVD Burners.
Here are a few tips that affect reading and writing DVD. This link is only a small amount of what can and does affect, I suggest you do a Google search to learn all you can.
