Disc space on external hd vanishes

Hi all,
any help on the two following problems is greatly appreciated:
I have a MBP (Leopard) to which I periodically connect various external USB-harddrives for backups, photo-editing, etc. I keep having two issues that I haven't been able to resolve by searching the forum and the web:
1) Two of the hds are small pocket USB-drives (Western Digital 320 GB, Medion 160 GB) which are formatted in FAT32. To my knowledge, I should be able to read and write, as well as delete, with the disc adjusting the available space. Unfortunately, the drive will not render previously occupied disc space. I.e. when I copy a 40 GB photo-folder from my internal HD to the external 320 GB one, and afterwards delete it, the disc space is still indicated as used in the info-tab, and the available disc space is still down to 280 GB. I've come as far as to not having enough disc space for my needs, but also don't have enough space available on either hd to back everything up on one and reformat. I am, however, not convinced anyway that this would solve the problem as the discs were formatted using my own MBP the first time around as well! Also, it seems to be a systematic error, because it's happening to both drives (they're both fairly new, < than 1 year old).
2) My third external hd poses another problem, which might be easily solved: In this case, the drive is a bit older (but still works fine) and was previously used with a WIN-laptop - it is therefore still formatted in NTFS. In order to be able to also write on it using my MBP, I downloaded this program:
<a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://kent.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/catacombae/NTFS-3G_20 09.4.4-catacombae.dmg
It resolved the problem immediately after the install, however, a today (a day later, after having had the MBP shut down and restarted) it is not working anymore. Even after installing the software again, no success.
Any ideas or suggestions? I will be a MUCH happier person if I can get all my back-ups done very soon, so PLEASE help
Thanks a bunch!!

Hi neuroanatomist,
many thanks for the swift reply - I did as you said and was in fact able to free up the missing disc space, big YAY!
I do have a quick follow up question though, if I may:
I simply went ahead and emptied my trash whilst having the two external USB-drives connected (as you suggested). If I wanted to, however, for whatever reason not delete my MBP-trash, is there any other way to get rid of the invisible .Trashes folder (or empty it, if that's the more practical/desirable solution)? I have to admit that I wasn't even able to find/see the folder, because I do not know how to make invisible folders visible in this case...
As for the commercial software: I will give it a try if I have not figured out another way by the end of the week. So if anyone else has a suggestion as to how I could solve the problem without spending any money, I'd still be grateful for a quick shout.
Again, thank you neuroanatomist!! (EDIT: ....and JoeyR, of course :))

  • Weird Issue: External Hard Drive disc space calculation error

Okay I just started having this weird error as far as calculating disc space. I added everything up and it reached 200GB out of 465GB but the bottom reads as no space left at all!
And when I go into the widget it will read 0 but the bar will show space left.
Any help getting this hard drive to read correctly.

Also, what file system is the hard drive formatted in according to Get Info's Format field? Get Info can be gotten by selecting the drive icon on the desktop and going to File menu -> Get Info, or using Command-I (the letter pronounced "eye". Command is the Apple logo key on your keyboard).
    Also is boot camp installed?

  • Lion Disc Space Disappearing - Not sure why.

I'm sorry, I know there /must/ be a thread on this already, but for the life of me the search on this forum never seems to reveal anything until I've posted a question (if at all). So I do apologize to those of you who dedicatedly sift through each of these posts.
Since upgrading to Lion, disc space has started vanishing. I have not made any major downloads and do not have much to begin with. I already store my iPhotos & iTunes on an external (well, the bulk of them - I've not found a means of consolidating two librairies yet, would be interested if anyone knows how I can do that, short of manual pain).
Twice now, I've ditched folders that contain ~10GB (for a total of >20GB), but shortly thereafter, and without replacement files being added, the warning comes up again. It's now blocking my comptuer from operating normally.
Thank in advance for your help.
    Best,
    Rax

Thank you for the response. [can I parenthetically add that I hate that this forum doesn't keep you logged in & that when you /do/ re-log in, it doesn't take you to the page you were viewing? Just have to get that off my chest - one of those days, you know].
Yes, only 50% capacity prior to installing Lion, but that was months ago (indeed, it was less that that, I can only account for roughly  50% of the space used).
I understand what you're saying about TM, but I /just/ did a backup - it seems safe to say that once transferred tot he proper TM storage unit, that that info need no longer be doubled up on the hard disc . . . No? I like the feature, in concept, but suspeect it is eating my hard disc space.
Anyhow, I've booked a genius appointment with the local apple store & will report back on what they find. I'm trying to be optimistic !

  • Recently backing up my ipad onto my macbook, which is the backup server for all of my gadgets.  This includes all my photos and tons of music.  The macbook said it could not backup the ipad because there was insufficient disc space to do so. What now?

I have a macbook operating OSX10.6.7.  Recently backing up my ipad which had lots of photos from a recent vacation.  I use this laptop as the backup server for all of my gadgets so it has thousands of photos and tons of music.  It just told me that it couldn't back up the ipad bc there wasn't enough disc space.  I was afraid that this would happen eventually.  What next?  Newer laptop with more space?  I'm not sure what files I could sacrifice to free up more space as most of these are important.

What size hard drive do you have in your MacBook? The cheapest options are, a larger internal hard drive, or an external drive. Or you could get a cheap desktop PC and network to it for storage. I've got one that lives in the hall with 3 Terabytes (That's 3000gb) of storage.

  • Limit Time Machine Disc Space

I am using an external NAS for backup. I backup up a few computers to the array. The array only has one volume right now. After a lot of reading it doesn't seem like you can limit disc space with time machine. Is there a way to limit the disc space TM uses vs. consume the full drive then delete old files? I would prefer not to drop the volume and partion the discs if possible. Any other options?
    Thanks for any assistance.

Not a good choice because the Time Machine backup drive needs to have much more space than the size of the hard drive you backup. If you need storage space, then buy another drive to use.

  • Insufficient Disc Space for Burning

My setup: Premiere Elements 12 running on an Apple iMac running OSx Yosemite. Samsung external blu-ray writer.
I have a recording of a play from my local amateur dramatic society. I have successfully burnt to a DVD-RW complete with menus and photograph gallery. When I insert a DVD-R it tells me there is insufficient disc space. The project is 4.38 Gb and Disc Utility tells me that the DVD has 4.7 Gb free. My hard disc has 826.96 Gb free. I have successfully written to other discs from this spindle in the past. I've tried two discs with the same result.
I tried burning to a folder then burning a disc using Toast, but the disc auto-played instead of displaying the menu (despite auto-play being unticked).
    Advice would be welcome.

    Mark
Thanks for the reply and additional information.
Please consider disc capacity, file size, and bitrate....
If your Premiere Elements burn dialog Quality area was showing 4.38 GB with "Fit Content to Available Space" enabled, what was it showing for Bitrate.
Unless the program had to lower the bitrate to 1.69 Mbps or where it could not lower the bitrate any further to make the fit, you should have been able to get a burn to disc in Premiere Elements. The quality would have been worse case at the extremely lowered bitrate, but a burn to nonetheless.
If you want to pursue this, we could compare the Space Required and Bitrate with and without "Fit Content to Available Space" to get at
what triggered the Insufficient Disc Space message. We could also look at the Scratch Disk "Disc Encoding" to find to where it is
directed and how much free space is at that location.
If you have the time and want to follow up on this, please let us know.
    Thank you.

  • Files deleted, but still taking up disc space.

When I delete files from my ext HD or USB flash drive the files are no longer visible but they're still using the disc space. I deleted everything from my 1G flash drive this morning, it was full, to be able to put different files on it and when I started adding the files I got a message telling me that there was no room left on the drive. The info bar at the bottom of the window even showed that there was only a small amount of disc space left, but there were no files to be found. I'm still in the process of the PC to Mac switch so I still have my old PC and use it from time to time. In order to completely delete these files I have to plug it in to the PC and delete them there. Only then is the drive actually empty. The same thing happens with external HD. Will I have to continue to be tied to my PC because if this or can this be fixed.
    Thanks for any help.
    Chris

Hi Matt, I haven't tried that with the flash drive yet but I did with the ext HD a couple of weeks ago and it wouldn't let me because it said the the files were locked, I even tried the "sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*" command in the terminal and it still wouldn't allow me to empty the trash, I didn't have the proper authority or something like that. That's when I discovered that once I ejected the HD the trash was suddenly empty. I plugged it in to the PC and emptied the "Trashes" folder, and back to the Mac and they were gone. Could it have something to do with the fact that these files, mostly music files but some PDFs and Word files, are coming from a PC, even though they're all Mac compatible?

  • HT1583 I'm trying to burn a Magic DVD in iDVD and I get a message stating "not enough free disc space for encoding the remaining assets. How do I resolve this?

I'm trying to burn a Magic DVD in iDVD and I keep getting a message stating that there is not enough free disc space for encoding the remaining assets. How do I resolve this?

It means your hard drive is too full to accomodate the project and its many swap files etc.
You need to move some files (not applications) to your external hard drive, and keep at least 25-30GB free.

  • HD Space vs FCE "Not enough disc space" warning

I'm trying to capture a 1 hour 27 minute video only clip. I've checked by settings and they are for my external drive that still has 346GB remaining. However, when I click "Capture" the device stops the clip after 9 minutes plus a few seconds, saying I don't have enough disc space or memory.
To get around this, I'm re-starting capture each time I get that message and creating 9 minute clips. I've captured video and audio segments up to a couple of hours without getting this warning before. I guess I'm too inexperienced at FCE to know where I should look to override this erroneous message. Even the Capture Window---which shows color bars and space to name the bin, reel, name, etc...says across the top that I have 344.9GB total free space, and total free AV time of 1545 minutes.

The HD is a Western Digital MY BOOK 500GB...
Is this a Firewire HD? If it's USB2 that will also be the cause of your problems.
Video needs firewire because of the method of data delivery in constant stream rather than in 'packets' as via USB.
I can't say why you've not had problems before - some people can capture via USB but it's not recommended and will probably lead to dropped frames and other issues.
Have you checked the formatting anyway? - all I can say is that it's well documented and recommended to capture to a drive to an external firewire and for it to be formatted Mac OS Extended (not journaled) for your computer set-up (as you can't add additional internal drives). Any other set-up will lead to problems.
Perform a search, there's a few posts in this forum referring to capture limited to about 9 minutes.

  • Having trouble with disc space on my 120G mac air. I back up to a separate my passport for mac disc, but my mac is also holding 40G worth of back up when i check what is using space. Why is this?

Having trouble with disc space on my 120G mac air. I back up to a separate " my passport for mac" disc , but my mac is also holding approx 40G of back ups as well when ive checked what is using space. Why is this?
Ive started running iphoto from the separate passport to save space,
and put all my music into the itunes match to save space as well
but it is still saying it is almost full because of the back ups!
I should of bought a bigger mac, but i need to make do at the moment, but it is hard when it constantly has only 10G or less space left.

When you use TimeMachine to back up a Mac notebook the local backups feature is automatically enabled. The local backup is just like a TimeMachine backup but it is done to the internal drive rather than an external. The important thing about local backups is that the feature is smart - as you need more drive space for your own data and applications, TimeMachine automatically culls the local backup to give you that needed space. So yes, it will look like you have very little drive space left and that the backup is 'robbing' you of needed GBs. But it really isn't.

  • What's the point of disc space?

What's the point of putting the tic on use as disc space, all i've found it does is disable your ipod while atached to your computer.

It means you can use your iPod as though it was an external hard disk. See:

    Hi
    start up disc space
Does just referes to the hard disk that contain Mac OS and from which You start-up
    Your Mac.
Even if You store Your movie on an external hard disk - the (often) internal boot hard disk
    can be too full.
I set for a minimum of 25Gb free space and most things runns OK.
(1 hour miniDV tape needs 13Gb to be stored and by editing it it can multiply easily
meaning - movie editing is a very hard disk space demanding task.)
as external hard disk - for my movies I use a
    • FireWire connected one (USB/USB2 doesn't always perform well)
    • *MUST BE Mac OS Extended formatted* - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange DOESN'T WORK !
This You can do by Yourself - BUT it ereases the drive - So it's good to start by doing this before doing anything else (on it).
