Disc Utility - Clone Hard Drive

I want to replace my hard drive - I was considering using Time Machine to back up to an external hard drive, then restoring back to the new hard drive once it was already in my Macbook.
However, I read about a more efficient way of doing this. If I put my new hard drive in an HDD Enclosure, can I use Disc Utility to clone my old hard drive onto the new one, then swap it? I wouldn't have to worry about any settings or updates being changed, right? How do I do this in disc utility?

Can I download the program online somewhere? If I download a trial version for instance will it allow me to enter my serial number and use it for the full program?

Pavillion dv6-3216us win7 64bit clone hard drive worked only with HDClone 4.1 tried many others that seemed to work but not boot.
cloned to WD 750 GB took about 2.5 hours

The originals were over 3 yrs old low end consumer models and 'due' for retirement to less frequent backup duties.
The Black or Blue Caviar 640GB costs slightly more but also 10-15% faster.
I wouldn't worry about temps, but I would monitor them, and if necessary boost the fans 200-300 rpm to help out.
Make sure everything is SL versions now (DW 4.2).
Normally I zero a drive and reformat more than others, and definitely with new OS.

Unable to clone hard drive from early 2008 macbook using disk utility, error 254

Attempting to upgrade my early 2008 Macbook hardrive, currently 160gb to a 250gb drive. Using Mac Disk Utility to restore from drive in computer to the 250 gb drive currently attached via usb. Receiving error, Could not validate source, error 254. I know this process works as I recently upgraded our MacbookPro to 1 TB. The 250gb drive I am attempting to clone to is from that computer. I have formated the 250gb drive, mac osx extended journaled, guid. Not sure how to proceed. Suggestions?

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

Clone Hard Drive and boot to different Mac

First off, lemme give the details... I just got a lacie rugged 500gb hard drive, and i have a macbook pro and an imac (both intel). Now my imac is in a bit of a shambles because i never really went through the process of deleting all the preference files and packages for software i used, i just simply deleted the program itself... so my library (and other things like my itunes library) are somewhat out of order. However, my macbook pro started from scratch, and has everything, including itunes, in order. Now that i have my new external HD, i want to move any important files from the imac (my family guy collection :P), then make a bootable clone of my macbook pro's hard drive (using intego personal backup x5 i believe), erase the imac's hard drive, and restore from the backup of my laptop's hard drive. Basically, i want to make my imac a clone of my macbook pro, while physically deleting all the unimportant stuff off of it, rather than just booting from the external hd every single time. Any suggestions as to wiping the imac's hard drive and restoring from the X5 backup? P.S. When you erase the hard drive (i am assuming using disk utility??) it leaves the OS intact no? So that when you boot you should be able to press option or whatever to boot from the drive? I have already explained what im goin for, step by step would be greatly appreciated....

Disk Utility and Hard Drive replacement on MacBook.

I am preparing to upgrade the hard drive on my MacBook and I was reading this document http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook13inch_HardDriveDIY.pdf and a the end after installing the hard drive and preparing to install Mac OS X the directions state the following: "Leave the Disk Utility application open, and restore the backed up files from the image you created before removing the hard drive.". I think that this would be a much quicker option then having to re install every application and copy over back up user data. My question is how do I create an image of the contents of the hard drive to use once I upgrade the drive?

I'd just clone (make a complete bootable backup) the internal to a backup external drive, swap out the internal, then clone back. That way you wouldn't have to do any installations.
To backup (clone) your main drive, you can use the donationware CarbonCopy Cloner @ http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html , or the shareware SuperDuper @ http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html , or the freeware IBackup @ http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/index.html, or the Restore function of Disk Utility included in OS X.

How to Clone Hard Drive from Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro with Retina

Hey everyone! I had a question about cloning my laptop's hard drive. I was considering buying a MBP with Retina, but was wondering how I would accomplish copying over my current hard drive to the retina, as I know you can't take out the retina's hard drive, and it is flash. Any suggestions?

Connect the two with a Firewire cable if they both have Firewire ports (or use Thunderbolt if the both have Thunderbolt ports.) Boot the new computer into Target Disk Mode and the old computer normally. The new computer's disk drive should appear on the Desktop of the old computer.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new computer's drive Source means the old computer's drive.
Be sure the old computer is running a version of Mountain Lion that is later than the version installed on the new computer. After cloning you will probably need to run the new 10.8.2 updater for the new computer. OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Update for 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 21.5" iMac (Late 2012), Mac mini (Late 2012).

Clone hard drive then raid two SSD's

Asking advice on how to re-install my current hard drive info after I RAID my two SSD drives on my 2011 (Early) Macbook Pro. I know how to do the RAID but need to know how do I get all my current hard drive contents back on the RAID'd drive. Do not want to have to re-install all my Apps

It is simple to clone your hard drive to the SSD RAID:
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the SSD RAID drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Would Like To Clone Hard Drive On X40

Hello folks.
I have an X40 with about 15GB allocated to the C and perhaps 5 GB allocated to the recovery partition (these are estimates), WXP Pro SP3. The machine is constantly running out of space.
So I found a replacement 40GB hard drive in Hong Kong. It is a Hitachi Travelstar model HTC426040G9AT00, Lenovo P/N 39T2690.
Now, I could just install this drive and reinstall WXPP from CD. But I am stubborn and don't want to do that. I want to preserve the utility partition. And I want to learn how to clone a drive, as I have never done that before.
I have been trying for weeks to clone the old drive to this new drive. I have been using
Symantec Norton Ghost v2003.775 to do this. Finally it appeared successful and so I went to boot up on the new drive and the OS just hangs in a blank screen.
So I booted to the WXPP SP3 CD and ran a fixmbr and fixboot but that made no difference.
I am out of known options so I ask you folks:
How can I go about cloning both partitions on the original 20GB drive to this replacement 40GB drive?

My external drive has disappeared although i shows up in disc utility, and flash drives also do not appear. Any ideas? Have tried restarting but.....

My back-up has stopped as my external drive is shown as "not accessible" and has disappeared from Finder although it shows up in Disc Utility. Similarly my USB flash drive has disappeared. Restarting does not help! Any ideas?

That's good news but maybe run a Repair Disk on it anyway given that it has been somewhat unpredictable.

Yes, you can partition your 2TB drive that way. In fact, I have an external hard drive with 3 partitions: one for a SuperDuper! clone of my Snow Leopard partition, one to clone my Lion partition, and one larger partition for Time Machine (which only backs up the Lion partition).
I would expect the authorized reseller to have a complete set of OS X disks.

Problems with set up disc after upgrading hard drive

I am having problems starting up my Macbook after upgrading the hard drive from 80GB to 160GB. The new hd is SATA, a WDScorpio. The pins on the end look the same, and I've had no problem with the physical install. When I go to start up the Macbook, I get a gray screen and the "flashing manila file w/a question mark" icon. I load the disc while holding down the "C" key, and all that happens is the disc gets ejected. What am I doing wrong? I also have my hd backed up w/time machine in an external hd. Any ideas?

Turns out, my problem is a malfunctioning optical drive. My Macbook couldn't read the set up disc. This is the second time in a week that I have had this Macbook into the apple store for warranty repair work. Last week, It was a defective VGcable. Each trip to the Applestore is 115 miles round trip from where I live. I tried to get Apple to give me a new computer, but no dice. I even had a district manager in Boise Idaho hang up on me. It's too bad when they know they have a product which everyone loves, and wants to use. They can set the terms. How many things must go wrong before they just replace the @#$# thing? I bought the Macbook Feb 12th, so it's not that old. I have handled it with the utmost care. Anyway, I've tasted the forbidden fruit, and will continue to use Apple products. Thanks for your help. I'll probably have a much easier time with a computer that works. (knock on wood)
