Disc utility showing problems. Help pleasee?

Hi guys
Skipping all the fine details, my MBP is having insane freezing issues and I need to reinstall Lion ASAP. But I also need to backup my files since I haven't been able to backup in a month. Yet whenever I try to backup, I'm told:
The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk.
While Trying to repair my external drive thinking it was the problem initially, I verified and repaired that disc and still had the problem.
I tried verifying/repairing my permissions for my internal drive, and I get these amounts of errors:

No idea what these mean.
Can you guys help me pweez!

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup; 10.7 or later), from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup; 10.7.2 or later), or from your installation disc (C key at startup; 10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”

  • Boot camp partition/disc utility repairs problem

First post, so heres my what i'm running - Mac Book 2.16, OSX 10.5.2, 2 GB RAM and 111 GB Hard Drive
I've been messing around with Boot Camp the last couple of days and I finally got windows xp SP2 to running, however I ended up deleting the partition so I could make it bigger. When I tried to make the partition again boot camp told me to repair my drive with disc utility. I ended up doing it from the installation disc and did the repair from there no problems. When I get back to boot camp it tells me to run disc utility to repair? Any help would be great!

Backup to another drive. 'nuke your current partitions and use the Partition tab in Disk Utility to set as 1 Untitled (rather than "current") and you'll be fine.
BCA needs to find one large free unfragmented contiguous chunk. Also, drives reformatted with Leopard (fresh) do better than systems upgraded in some manner from Tiger to Leopard. Partition maps seem better.
Lots and lots and lots of threads that are 100% identical to yours floating around - daily occurrence. Everyone that 'cuts it short' and wants larger, cutting corners, not planning for growth.
Plan for SP3 which will be out eventually, sooner more than later.
If you don't need to run native Windows, then Fusion/Parallels is a lot less troublesome.

  • Trying to install snow leopard on my Macbook Pro.  After already having problems with Grey screen, blinking file with a question mark, etc.  Computer now says that one of the hard drives is failing. The "hitachi" drive says it's failing in disc utility.

o.k.  So, I've been tinkering with several "self help" fixes for several days now with no positive results.  I'll explain my initial problems and then end with my most current situation.  In hopes that someone out there will have a good suggestion or possibly remedy for the issues i'm facing
First, my problem started after my wife played a game on my macbook pro and the computer froze.  She went into a panic and decided to shut down via power button.  When computer restarted she got the blinking file/grey screen and that problem continued for a couple of days before I began using steps from various support topics from apple concerning the grey screen/blinking file folder.
Ultimately, yesterday I decided to erase my Macintosh HD file as one tip suggested.  Following the brief online and on screen (via the process) tips that were there.  Once that was completed I attempted to reinstall snow leopard (my most current version on hand) into the pc.
At first, I thought this would work.  It looked promising.  But, after several hours the installation screen returned with failure.  I attempted to repeat.  And, even repair drives during this try and re-try process.
Now, today, one of the drives..  "hitachi..." states that it's failing and is in red letters with no ability to repair via the disc utility screen.  The Macintosh HD drive shows that it's o.k. But, this drive is listed under the HItachi drive so I think that's where a problem might lay.
So, I guess my question really revolves around.. What if anything can I do to get the hitachi drive back up?  (short of taking it to a repair facility and replacing.)
And, how on earth can i get my OSX back up to I have a laptop again.
Operating on a macbook pro here.  It's my lifeline.  Otherwise, I am using a Windows desktop that i'm not that fond of.  lol
I'm trying to bring this 2006 laptop back to life.  Trying to avoid a rather expensive repair or the purchase of a new laptop.  Also expensive...
    Any help would be appreciated.

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

  • My external HD will not show up on my desktop anymore. I'm on macbook pro 13", OS 10.7. It doesn't show up in disc utilities, nor on another mac, nor on that mac's disc utility. I happened to restart the comp while the HD was connected.

My external HD won't show up anymore on my desktop nor does it get listed in disc utilities. I tried to cennect it to another mac but it doesn't show there either nor in that mac's disc utility. I happened to re-start the computer while the hd was connected and now it doesn't show up anymore. I use it for back-up via Time machine. I could re-format and do the back up all over again but then I need to find it first. Please, does anyone have any solution to this problem?

It sounds as though the external drive may have failed. There's nothing at all wrong with restarting your computer with the external drive connected -- that's a perfectly reasonable and normal thing to do, done by countless users every day without any ill effects.

  • My external drive has disappeared although i shows up in disc utility, and flash drives also do not appear. Any ideas? Have tried restarting but.....

My back-up has stopped as my external drive is shown as "not accessible" and has disappeared from Finder although it shows up in Disc Utility. Similarly my  USB flash drive has disappeared. Restarting does not help! Any ideas?

That's good news but maybe run a Repair Disk on it anyway given that it has been somewhat unpredictable.
With Time Machine, one expert helper here named pondini has an extensive knowledge of that software and has prepared a lot of material on it. Here is a link to some of it.

  • Disc utility help! USB shown there but not on finder!

    Hi!
I cannot access the information on my USB drive as it does not show on Finder (Macbook Pro with Retina Display - Late 2013).
I am using the 32GB SanDisk Cruzer Edge with some important documents that I would like to retrieve.
But then I found out that the disc was recognized on disc utility.
HOWEVER in my situation, I was unable to first aid the disk as the buttons 'verify disk' and 'repair disk' were all grey.
I tried to unmount the usb but it says that it couldn't until I 'first aid' the disk...
Any suggestions to how I can fix this?!!
    PLS HELP!!!

What are the settings in Finder Preferences?
    Ciao.

Using Disk Utility, I select the disc image that contains the data that I want to backup to a DVD and select Burn. The program asks that a blank DVD be inserted.  When I do that, no format pop-up appears as is indicated in the Help instuctions.  If I procede with the burn, there is no password protection.  Before I converted to Lion, I used to use Disk Utility to burn backup DVDs without any problems.

AFAIK, you create an encrypted disk image and burn that to DVD. There's nothing else to do, but I might be mistaken.

  • Disc Utility REPAIR Help

Recently, I was trying to partition my HD with Boot Camp Assistant.
The message returned was that "some files could not be moved".
So then I started up Disc Utility and clicked VERIFY DISC.
After that an error message comes up that I have to repair from my installation CD.
    The problem?
I'm in Bangkok right now and the disc OS X 10.6 is in the UK.
I was wondering if I could use my other disc OS X 10.5 to perform the repair instead.
I'm not going to be back in the UK for awhile and really need to repair my disc.
    Any suggestions?
Also, willl repairing my disc require me to back up my files in case of data loss?

I think are being told that the Windows partition cannot be made because your files are too widely spread over your drive (i.e., the "some files could not be moved" message).
There are several ways to try to accomplish what your want to do--if you successfully get your repair done. I am not sure if the 10.5 disk will do the job or that you should even try using this disk for the repair. Can you borrow a Snow DVD or go to an Apple Store for Snow repair help?).
Given the repair, IMO, the best way to proceed is to make a bootable clone of your internal volume on an external and, then, restore/clone it back to your internal. This approach will defrag your drive. Test the clone after making it to be sure it boots. I would not use a defragger on OS X if I could help it. Doing so can be destructive. For casual cloning, just use Disk Utility. To clone using Disk Utility (DU):
    1. Start DU;
    2. Choose Restore;
    3. Drag your internal volume to the source box;
    4. Drag your external partition or volume to the destination box;
    5. Choose Erase Destination; and
    6. Click restore

    Seef,
This is what Mad Fool posted & it has helped many:
Did you recently update your iTunes?
If so, that seems to have caused a bit of a problem with Panther.
    If that is the case:
Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all ITunes .pkg files
    EXCEPT iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg.
Be very careful here, be sure to leave the last two there!
Then see if you can repair permissions.

  • I have an alert message in disc utility. Error: storage system verify or repair failed. Problems were found with the partitian map which might prevent booting.

While running verify disc in disc utility on 251 GB SSD SM256c Media I came up with this message: Alert system verify or repair failed. In the descriptions box of history it said, problems were found with the partitions map which might prevent booting. This is followed by a message in red reading, Error: Storage system verify or repair failed. At the time I was down loading raw pictures off my camera through a card reader across my computer to a relatively new 2TB Western Digital portable hard drive. after about 13 to 15 pictures downloaded that drive faileded. My Mac Book Air works fine, but i get this message now everytime I run disc verify on this disc. The Macintosh HD checks out fine.
