Discoloration AGAIN!!!

I sent my MacBook to Apple about a month ago to get my cover replaced for the yellow discoloration.
It is now starting to happen again and I am very dissapointed.
Will Apple replace my cover again without any problems?
It's such a bummer...
Thanks,
Sam

Do you think it will matter if I have
had my MacBook since the first day that it came out?
Yes, I highly doubt you'll get a black one. This might be an alternative solution. At least the heat from the MacBook shouldn't affect it.

  • Discoloration Issue

    1. Do they send it out of the Apple Store to fix the discoloration?
    2. Does this actually fix the problem, or will my palm rest get discolored again after a few months?

    1. I think this heavily depends on the store. Some people have reported having it repaired in store, while others (including myself) seem to have to mail it back.
    2. This also heavily depends. Most people seem to have no problems with their new palm rests. On the other hand, my new palmrests seem to be discoloring once again .

  • Random shut down repair results

    As apparently many of you have been, I am in the beginning stages of the random shut downs. My first random shut down occurred a little over a month ago during a rather long session. Everything came back up and I figured it was a freak happening at the time. However, in the past few days, each time I start the computer after it has been sitting cold for a while, it shuts down several times during or shortly after bootup. The problem seems to be getting worse.
    Frankly, I don't know what to do about it; should I wait, ask for a specific repair, etc...? Therefore, if you have had this problem and sent it in for repair, could you please just give a quick summary of what they repaired and how the results have been, such as how long it worked after repairs are done? This will give me and others some idea of what the best option is at this point.
    In all honesty, I wish I could unbuy this Macbook at this point, since from what I hear, this is a terminal illness for the computer that affects a significant percentage.
    However, since I doubt I can so easily get rid of this computer and afford to buy myself a more reliable PC, who wants to plan a road trip to Cupertino and pitch a fit?

    I bought my Macbook May 22 and started having the random shut-downs in early July. I immediately called Applecare after it happened a few times in a row and went through the process of disconnecting it from the power source, taking out the battery, putting it back in, replugging the power source, turning it on, pressing appleoption+pr and holding it for a bit, and having it turn on. It seemed to work -- for a day. So I called back about it and they offered to send a box out, but since I didn't want to be away from my computer I figured I'd just take it to an apple store near me. So I did that the next day.
    I met with a genius and he checked out the computer, it had been on for half an hour without turning off and he was wary about it as if I was lying because he had never heard of this problem before. It never turned off during my appointment, so he decided to take another customer but run diagnostics on mine while he was helping out this other guy. While running diagnostics, he restarted the computer and instead of the regular gray apple start up screen, it remained gray and multicolored vertical lines started slowly appearing on the screen. The genius started to look stressed and fiddled around with the computer without it facing me so I'm not sure what he did, but the screen had shut off and woudn't turn back on, and didn't connect to another screen he tried to hook it up to. He took my computer to send out for repairs, and two weeks later on apple's repair status site, it still said "on hold for a part."
    So I called applecare, was on hold for 30 minutes, and finally got a really nice girl explaining that the part had come in four days before and that my computer should be shipped out shortly. Two days after that I checked the site and it said that it was shipped out already. I received my computer and the form said that a few things were replaced but they were all letters and numbers so I wasn't quite sure what exactly was replaced. I do know they replaced the area around the touchpad because I had mentioned how I wasn't a fan of the discoloration problem. It was new and bright white and I was happy about it (it has since started to discolor again).
    The day after I got it back I restarted the computer and the multicolored vertical lines appeared and I of course freaked out because that's exactly the reason why it was away from me for about two and a half weeks. So I called Applecare and the guy got me to change the resolution set up a couple of times and said that it was a resolution problem. I didn't think about it anymore afterwards, I was too happy to have my computer back up and running.
    So a week and a half ago its started to randomly shut down again, and while it isn't as frequent as it first was (many times a day to just once in a while), it is still a problem, obviously. I'm glad to have come on here and found that I'm not the only one with this problem.
    Sorry about the long post but I wanted to share my experience with Applecare and the repairs.

  • A suggestion for anyone with discoloration on the rist area!

    I just want to let people know the Marware MacBook protection package is great for the wrist area of your MacBook.
    I had my cover replaced for discoloration 3 times and that was one to many times!
    So...
    I was in the Apple store today and I saw the Marware wrist cover and decided to buy it. It's the best product that I have boughten for my MacBook. It feels great to know that I am not going to have to worry about discoloration ever again!!
    I recommend this to anyone, not only does it protect your case of your MacBook but it also provides comfort!
    Here's the link if you wanna check it out:

    It's awesome and if you are getting a MacBook for someone this Christmas then I also suggest this cover for there MacBook. They sell these at Apple stores.
    Just thought I would give me insight on this awesome product and sorry if I upset anyone for this post, I just had to let people know about this cover.

    Thanks for the reply.
    Have tried repairing via pcc, also done a factory reset, disabled some apps and cleared the cache on a few other apps.
    Also, tried using different browsers like opera, dolphin and all not being able to play flash properly mainly on youtube.
    The only time a youtube vid played properly through the desktop site was when I set the quality of the video to the lowest possible (something like 350p) ?

  • The old "discoloration" issue...

    first and foremost, i LOVE my macbook. Had it for almost 3 weeks with ZERO complaints. Doesn't run TOO hot, no unexplained noises, nothing
    All that said, i'm wondering if i'm experiencing some of this "discoloration" everyone keeps talking about. 3 weeks in and it's already starting to show some serious wear, specifically on the button. I'll post a few pics, which don't really do it justice. Just thought I'd post here before and get opinions of other people before i bring it in and make a bigger deal out of it than is necessary.
    if i DO need to bring it it, what steps do i need to take?
    thanks everybody!!

    "When Apple does repair it, you will get exactely
    the same cover. I mean, it has been made from
    exactely the same plastic. The discoloration will
    come back in abaut the same time."
    I'm not sure I buy this. I had my cover replaced, and
    it has a much different feel that the one I had
    originally. The replacement is very smooth, whereas
    the original had a much more textured feel. Sorry,
    but I'm not convinced.
    Yea, you are right if you have any of the first models off the macbook. But if you macbook is younger then 4 weeks, then you will get exactely the same cover. Anyway that is what i see when i repair them. I work in the Machouse in the netherlands, biggest apple store round there. Even the model numbers off the covers are exactely the same. The first models off the macbook had a slightly different cover, so that would be usefull to replace. But your macbook is 3 weeks old, so you will get the same. At least in the Apple Sore in Holland.
    "When it is put together again, it will always be a
    little weaker then before."
    Not to be difficult here, but what is your evidence
    for this claim? Granted, I don't like having my
    computer taken apart and repaired either (sort of
    like a car, I suppose), but why is it necessarily a
    "little weaker"?
    That is a common issue. I dont know if you have ever opened a apple Powerbook or Macbook or Macbook Pro. The cover has always clicked with plastic lips. Every time you open the notebook, those lips weaken. How gentely you open the cover, there will always damage one off the clips. Becouse you have to slide around a stick at the side off the laptop to open it.

  • Mac Book Discoloration Replacement Outside USA

    Calling all international Mac users!
    I have researched what seems thousands of discussions on the Mac Book's discoloration, specifically the white MB. I have had my white MB for around 2 months and it is just beginning to show the yellow discoloration where my palms rest, the space bar, and on certain keys as well. I try to keep my hands clean as many people said they wash their hands but it has not helped. From what I understand Apple is now replacing the casing that is causing the problem (my serial number is 4H6306 blah blah blah if it helps). I am glad they are doing something about the problem. BUT, I live in China now. I am going to see where the nearest Apple store is here (if it exists). But if anyone has any suggestions how to fix the problem being that I am not in America anymore, that would be great. Luckily it does not affect the performance.
    Will Apple pay for the shipping of my computer back to the US, fix the problem, and send it back to me? That would take months. Would they possibly priority ship it?
    If all else fails I will try to find some sort of non-harmful cleaning agents to help the sparkly whiteness come back. It looked so good when I bought it.
    I hope Apple pulls through on this one.
    Mac Book 2GHz White   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iPod U2 Special Edition 20 gig (4th Generation)

    We have the exact same problem! I live in Slovakia and my week 21 macbook is discoloring. I brought it to an Apple reseller a few weeks ago, and he recognized the problem immediately and knew that Apple would fix it without charge. But things got more complicated when I pointed out that I had an American keyboard and the surrounding case would have to fit that (I'm not sure if the keyboard is replaced with the case). That confused him, he went to make a call, and came back to tell me that he thought maybe they could get a replacement case for an American keyboard. Maybe? Then he told me he would have to send the macbook away for the repair, and it would take about 2 weeks.
    I could not afford to be without my only computer for that long, so I asked him if there was any way for him to order the case and repair it on the premises, and he told me there was not. Then I asked if I could wait until the Christmas break and bring it in then, and if Apple would still be willing to pay for the repairs. He told me that would be fine- there was no deadline for the case replacement - and I uneasily decided to do that. Add to my frustration that I ordered marware to cover the unsightly brown marks more than a month ago, and it still hasn't arrived!
    Yesterday, I read on this forum that it is possible that after some amount of time Apple will not be willing to replace the case free of charge, and that made me nervous again. Also, I would like a definitive answer on the issue of the American keyboard. I would like to email AppleCare about this, but can't find an email address, so I think I will have to spend a lot of money to call the States and ask about this directly, IF I can find a number that is not an 800 one, since I can't call those from here.
    One reason I bought the macbook was that I believed their strong customer service was available worldwide, but I am finding it impossible to get contact information or repairs that could begin to match what I would find in the US!
    Finally, I use non-acetone nail polish remover once a week or so to try to keep the staining to a minimum, and that may help a little. But over time, it is definitely worsening, and it makes me sad to see it.
    Please keep posting what you can find out about how to get your discoloration repaired, and I'll let you know how it works out for me, too.

  • New MacBook buyers/users - Info so far on Discoloration Issue

    White MacBooks are known to show a yellow/pink/grey/green stain after approximately 2 weeks of use. A thread below on this forum points out that using Shieldzone does NOT prevent discoloration from happening. More info can be found at http://stainedbook.info.
    I'm worried about this since I am planning to get a MacBook in July. Actually I did get one in mid-June, but returned it for a refund due to frequent kernel panics (unplugging headphones) while also getting a free 100-dollar credit for my troubles. Nice customer support I agree, but so far a significant number of users seem to be suffering from this irremovable stain.
    The most concerning thing is that although some threads show several users having a problem-free MacBook, those users have serial numbers of week 23 or higher, meaning they would have reached the 2 ~ 2.5 week mark just about now. Remember that the discoloration became visible usu. after 16 days; therefore their claims are meaningless unless users with more than a month-old MacBooks (and a majority of them) confirm a stain-free status on their laptops.
    Some of you may point out that the silent majority does not come to these forums and complain. Right. But this discoloration issue is not such an 'ignorable' thing either - just type 'discoloration MacBook' on google and you'll get a number of results created by disgruntled users. Now given the state of affairs I have no guarantee that I won't receive a faulty MacBook that will show irremovable stains, and note that Apple has not said a single word about replacing or refunding affected machines.
    Now I've used the MacBook for a couple of days - the heat is no greater than other Dual Core machines out there, and personally I only detected a small whine that would go away with Photobooth. I'm fine with issues that can be corrected with a firmware update but hey - a MacBook that looks as if I spilled some Indian curry or similar **** on it after a month of use is definitely not appealing.
    So my advice is either wait for word from Jobs, or get a black MacBook.
    Additional word to Macmanias here - Don't keep saying that only a few users are experiencing discoloration. Not everyone speaks English, and since Apple has stores all over the world, there could be foreigners going through this problem whose voices can not be heard on this forum. Also if you can find info about this simply by typing 'discoloration' on Google (and not just on Apple discussion forums) it is significant, esp. for a major computer manufacturing company. And if you really love Apple so much, then you should make sure that those affected do get a refund or a replacement instead of attempting to silence ppl who spent over 1 K on a laptop.

    For myself, today I tried scrubbing with a white
    eraser, then I tried aftershave (someone somewhere
    said this worked with an iBook)
    I wish there was one thing that could be tried, but it would ultimately damage the plastic. I want to know just how deep this stain is. Automotive rubbing compound, white. I would like to see what would happen if some "aggressive" rubbing compound could be tried in a dime-sized area. I don't think aggressive compound can be had in white, though, probably the color we don't want---it is brown! I would love to see if the rubbing of the compound in the dime-sized area would remove the stain.
    Another comment... if this were my computer, and Apple has no solution (and I've mentioned this before), I would remove the plastic upper shell bezel, sand it down very smooth, spray some paint adhesion, then spray paint it with a glossy color designed for plastic. I would then spray it again with clear coat. Buff it, polish it. This could all be done for under $10.00. The paint I would love to put on is that special white pearl that changes its color a bit at different angles in the light. I know some kids who have done that with their game consoles.
    And finally, stain or no stain..., the way this case is designed, where the palms rest, that area is going to become shiny, no matter what. And, if hands are dirty, that area is going to become darker in a shiny way, when compared against the grey-white of the non-shiny plastic.
    Although our white MacBooks are such a nice styled design with its simplistic nature, it doesn't take into account the constant rubbing of the palm's heel. That area is going to shine up.
    The only way to keep this from happening is to repaint.
    My office Dell D600 notebook computer is three years old, and where my palm rubs, you can't see anything. The main reason is that the entire top bezel is a shiny, metal-flake, dark grey color. It is slick. I don't see any difference in the area where my hand rubs, and the surrounding area.
    So, anyway, even if we don't get the orange_ish Cheetos stain, we are going to get a shiny wear area. I'll bet this is even true with the black MacBooks.

  • Discolored Display/not image persistence or burn in

    I have a late 2007 Intel iMac. I had this problem once before already and Apple replaced the display. I see that it has happened again. There is a random amount of grey discoloration happening on the left side of the screen. Not evident with a white background, but quite evident with a grey background. It does not appear to be burn in or image persistence. I wonder if the small halogen desk lamp I have on the left side (some 8" from the edge of the computer) could be responsible? Anyone offer an explanation for this?
    I do have AppleCare and can take it in. I'm assuming I can't fix it myself.

    I do NOT have a halogen lamp next to my iMac 7,1.
    I do have 2 small Bose computer speakers on either side.
    I have horizontal discolorations on the left side similar to yours.
    LCDscrub http://toastycode.com/lcdscrub/ might fix it, but you will have to buy the software as the trial version is really useless (for obvious reasons).
    I am living with the problem until next Summer (AppleCare expires in August 2010) when I will take into Apple for a fix.

  • Ugh....Macbook broken again

    I just got my macbook back from the apple store two weeks ago after having it fixed for random shutdown syndrome and discoloration. This weekend, I got several new software updates which I installed. Then, when my computer shutdown after the update, it was never able to boot up again. When I turn it on, I hear the chimes as normal, but I never see anything on the display (it stays completely white). After a couple seconds, several vertical lines of various colors begin to bleed into the screen and form a rainbow effect that spreads across the screen horizontally.
    I tried a couple preliminary things such as running the macbook at half power, and trying to boot from the OSX to undo whatever updates killed the comp, but nothing seems to help.
    I am pretty busy right now, but I am going to take it into the apple store later this week to get it fixed if time allows. Does anybody have any idea what this could be or any other suggestions on potential fixes? It sounds like the computer is running, but I cannot tell if there are other issues, or if this is mostly a "display" matter.
    This was my first apple purchase ever and I am a little concerned that I have had three major issues already since I have purchased the computer. Is this typical, or did I just get unlucky with my particular computer?

  • Screen Issues - Scratch on LCD / Discolored Aluminum on left side

    I purchased my MBP July 2008 ... I have handled this laptop with kid gloves. I've been seeing a few things that concern me as of lately. First, I have the matte screen which is developing a horizontal scratch (looks like from the sharp edge next to the space bar). As if that isn't annoying enough, on the left side of the screen, the aluminum between the LCD and the edge of the screen is starting to discolor in spots causing it to turn white. Originally, I thought that there was something on it, but this doesn't come off...It is as if the finish is damaged. What gives?
    I spent a fortune on this computer and am shocked to start seeing things like this given how well it is cared for. I have Googled and common reasons for the scratch is applying pressure to the screen which doesn't fit my situation. The scratch on the screen is a little ridiculous as it seems to be getting worse with time.
    Is this something Apple will do anything about?
    Thanks in advance!

    Okay...Now I need to give an update and ask again for help from the experts. At the same time I discovered my screen getting a horizonal scratch, my iSight camera quit working. I took it in to the Apple Store and they agreed to replace the screen as the hardware was faulty (broken camera) and sold me a piece of soft material to put between my screen and keyboard to prevent scratching after they replace the screen. I couldn't get it repaired the weekend I took it in due to their scheduling and the fact I live 100 miles away from the store. So they told me to bring it back to any Apple Store when it was convenient to do so and they would be glad to replace my screen as agreed upon. They noted the situation and I was set.
    In December, I finally made time to have the computer screen replaced. Needless to say the tech who worked on it was either in a hurry or didn't care. Long story short, they gave me the last display assembly in stock which was warped and they didn't get the computer back together correctly because there is a gap on the rear of the display assembly on the left side where there shouldn't be one. Despite the mediocre repair, my iSight camera worked and they told me bring it to any Apple Store within 6 months and they would replace the screen again to make me "happy." This is after an employee at the Apple Store tried to convince me that my warped display was normal because of unavoidable manufacturing imperfections. My last display sat flat, so that excuse didn't fly. If I owned a Dell, that might be a different story, but I paid over $2000 for a machine and I expect better. Fast forward to tonight...I was going to get a iChat session rolling only to come to find that my iSight went out again (assuming another hardware failure). I know the screen is supposed to get replaced again down the road because of the poor repair job on the first go around, but how many hardware failures do I need before things work and continue to work?!? I cannot afford to drive 100 miles down to the Apple Store every 3 months because something else is broke. This is the second time the iSight went out for no apparent reason. What is the lemon law for computers?
    I know I sound like a disgruntled Apple customer, but let me assure you that I'm venting. I love my MBP, but am disappointed with this situation and am seeking advice what to do about it.
    I thought about trying to get my computer repaired at a local Apple Authorized Service Center where they order the part and fix it when the part comes in. I've seen their work for a keyboard replacement on a family members computer and it appears they do good work. Are there any downsides to having an Apple Authorized Service Center replace my screen for the second time?
    Thanks in advance for any advice or insight you could shed on the current situation.

  • Invisibleshield + Smart Cover = Discoloration

    Greeting All,
    Just sharing a recent experience to potentially help someone else with troubleshooting.
    I'm using the Zagg Invisibleshield and the Smart Cover on the Ipad2.  I noticed bands of brownish discoloration on the screen (big bands with rough edges) and thought I had a hardware issue.  Long story short - after consulting at the Apple Store -  the Invisibleshield is picking up color from the Smart Cover.
    The nice folks at Zagg will readily replace the Invisibleshield.  But, the discoloration will likely occur again.  But, for protection, I'll probably put it back on since it took several months to start seeing the bands of color.
    Have anyone else experienced this?  Any long term solution?
    All the best!

    You should go to the nearest Best Buy or Apple store and try to get it off.

  • Palmrest is not only discolored but also EXTREMELY DIRTY!

    so yea, everyone has been talking about the discoloration on the palmrest. not only do i have that, but my entire palmrest has gotten really dirty where my hands rest on it (like brown). i have tried EVERYTHING to get it off, even pure alcohol! nothing has seemed to work. i have only had my macbook for about 2 months, so i feel like this shouldn't be happening yet. does anyone else have this problem? if so, what have you done to clean it? thanks.

    I'm a perfectionist so I want my white macbook to look like new. I bought the expensive iclear stuff which works really well on the outside, the keyboard and the screen, but it doesn't do all that well with the palm rests, etc. in making it perfect clean. iclear gets it 90% of the way there, but for that last 10%...
    For the palm rest and the touchpad, I use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I have no idea what is in that sponge, but it wipes away the marks and makes it new again. Do not use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the screen or on the outside, only use it for the palm rest and touchpad and really wring it out so that there is barely any water. I've been doing this once a week for a month now with no unusual wear or anything like that.

  • Discoloration around text

    hi.
    this may surely be posting in the wrong forum, but I dont know what forum this would really be under!
    im writing a program that (first) creates a standard colored background with some text drawn in front of it (with drawstring) -- all in a graphics2D object.
    Then I save the bufferedImage of the graphics2D object to the disk as a jpeg.
    I cannot see the graphics2D object that is being created, I only see the output.
    However the outputted jpeg, (which again is a VERY simple graphic containing text and a background), appears to be pixellated all around the text. What I mean is that there is a discoloration. Some pixels around the text appear in variously similar colors to the background. If I make the image a bitmap, same thing happens.
    unfortunately I require a perfected jpeg image that has no discoloration, would I have to analyze it pixel by pixel to convert the colors to either the background color, or the foreground color... seems like overkill. This should be simple, right?
    any ideas?

    I dont do anything special to the text..
    just
    bufferedImage = new BufferedImage(iScreenWidth,iScreenHeight, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
    Graphics2D g2dDrawSpace = bufferedImage.createGraphics();
    g2dDrawSpace.setcolor(Color.red);
    g2dDrawSpace.fillRect(0, 0, iScreenWidth, iScreenHeight);
    g2dDrawSpace.setcolor(Color.green);
    g2dDrawSpace.drawstring("this is text", 50, 50);
    RenderedImage renImage = bufferedImage;
    File filImg = new File("jb.jpg");
    ImageIO.write(renImage, "jpg", filImg);
