Discoloration?

hey all... I've bought my macbook on July 2006, and about six months later the area where I rest my wrists while typing started to change color a little bit. not black, but kinda pink or orange >_<
ok i am clean and i dont smoke. so its really weird to see my computer go dark that way. haven't they thought about this?
i heard before about discoloration issue with macbook. is that the same thing? so my macbook now is 15 months old. if thats the discoloration issue, will they fix it for free?
i have no where else to ask . so please do help me find the answer
thanks a lot for ur time and response

It never hurts to ask, but the original warranty covers manufacturing defects brought to Apple's attention within one year of purchase. If you had brought it in while still under warranty, they would definitely have replaced the case free of charge. But now, if you don't have AppleCare, they are not required to replace it. That doesn't mean they WON'T, though - you can only ask.

  • White Macbook: discolored/shiny palmrests

I've had my white Macbook for about six months. Very quickly the palmrests became discolored and grimy. Glass cleaner has done a great job getting rid of the dirt, but the palmrests are still shiny - you can really see this when you look at them at an angle. It looks like sweat/oils have actually corroded away some of the finish, but I can't be sure. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution apart from having the top case replaced? Thanks for any ideas.

Here's a picture of MY MacBook if it helps... (the one above I found online).

  • DVI- HDMI discoloration on HDTV (as second monitor)

    Hello all.
I have been having some issues when using my Philips CRT 30" 1080i HDTV as a second monitor via a DVI->HDMI cable. There seems to be a discoloration that occurs (my best guess being a "green" discoloration) that occurs in the top left corner of the screen. It is made all the more apparent when you then unplug, and a purple haze is left in the corner of the "blue" video input channel. (i imagine the green discoloration on the blue channel yields purple).
From what I can tell, this problem does not occur on any other video input (say, a Wii on the composite channel, or an XBOX on the component, etc).
I had heard rumblings that it could be, in order of bad to worst: a bad HDMI cable, a bad HDMI input on the television, or the television going bad period.
Wanted to know if any of you have had or heard of similar experiences. Need to decide soon if I'm going to had to just buy a new HDMI cable, or if I need to buy a new television/monitor for a job coming up.
    Thanks in advance!
    Brian

Problems like that are caused by stray magnetism that cause misalignment of the electron beams from landing on the proper phosphor color. The set itself has a demagnetizer, but sometimes the magnetism is too strong for the built-in demagnetizer to overcome. But calling in a TV repair person to do a demagnetization is, I'm afraid, a throw back to bygone days. But that's what your TV needs.

  • How to remove discoloration in WP-DC34 underwater casing?

how to remove discoloration in WP-DC34 underwater casing?

the inside of the underwater casing discolored.  It used to be a clear see-thru case but now, it has this white colored substance on the inside that makes it hard to see the display of the camera.  I don't know what caused it.  I wasn't able to use it for a long time and when i did used it on a swimming trip, after i've rinsed it and left it over night, the next day the discoloration appeared.  I thought that it might have been caused by salt deposit so i soaked the inside of the casing with water and left it over night.  The next day, it got worst.  So took it out, tried washing it with soap and dishwashing soap, didn't work.  I tried rubbing it with clothe, it cleared a little bit, but still there.  I'll take a picture of it and post it here so that you'll have a visual of what i'm talking about, the white substance in the casing.

  • Ipod nano screen discoloration or darker area

Hello, I purchased an ipod nano on September 18th and did not purchase an extended warranty. I have noticed when i got it that on the screen there is a little discoloration or darker area in the center of the screen, it is more visible when held farther away, or while palying the game brick. (because of the diffrent color of the back ground, easier to see.) It can also be seen while the ipod is off and if you tilt it at an angle. Is there any way I could get this one repaired, since it is with-in 30 days of purchase? Also if I can get it repaired, what would be the price if I decide to get an extended warranty for my ipod nano? Thanks very much, Matt

It's difficult to know what exactly is wrong with the iPod, but if it were me I would take it to an Apple store and have them take a look.
The iPod warranty is for 12 months from the date of purchase, and if you have no Apple store nearby, you can arrange online service.
    Service request.
The AppleCare extended warranty is $59. You can get this at the online store or a retail store.

    Thanks for the reply.
Have tried repairing via pcc, also done a factory reset, disabled some apps and cleared the cache on a few other apps.
Also, tried using different browsers like opera, dolphin and all not being able to play flash properly mainly on youtube.
The only time a youtube vid played properly through the desktop site was when I set the quality of the video to the lowest possible (something like 350p) ?

  • Good News for those of you with discoloration...

Apple recognizes, will repair discolored MacBooks
    By Kasper Jade
    Published: 11:00 AM EST
Apple Computer customers who've experienced premature discoloration on the casings of their glossy white MacBooks may finally see some restitution, AppleInsider has been told.
In an internal bulletin earlier this week, Apple for the first time acknowledged that a problem exists with some of its white 13-inch MacBook notebooks, where the casings of the computer may inexplicably turn shades of orange after very little usage.
"Some white MacBook computers may exhibit discoloration on the top case after some use," the company wrote in a note to its retail sector and service partners. "If this issue occurs [...] and the computer meets certain requirements, Apple will cover replacement of the affected parts under warranty."
In order to be eligible for the extended warranty repair, a customer's MacBook must have a serial number that falls within the range of 4H617XXXXXXXX to 4H627XXXXXXXX. The notebook must be irresponsive to approved cleaning solutions.
In replacing the top case -- the affected portion of the computer containing the palmrest area -- Apple will also replace the display bezel, people familiar with the repair process say.
The warranty extension is being made available to MacBook customers in all of Apple's major markets, including the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Japan.
Customers afflicted by discolored MacBook syndrome should contact an Apple Care support representative by phone (1-800-800-2775 in US) or bring their computer to a local Apple retail store to arrange for diagnosis or repair.
Widespread reports of discoloration began appearing only weeks after Apple introduced the new Intel-based MacBook notebooks, which are available in both white and black (not affected). Since then, some customers have had success in getting their stained MacBooks replaced or repaired through a variety of avenues, while others have not.
It's still unclear precisely what causes the discoloration, however speculation on the Web suggests a bad batch of plastics may be to blame.

Why don't they do the same for the bad logic board? It's obviously an issue; they might as well address it and make it easier for people that don't know why their computer is constantly turning off.

  • Video Discolored

Hi there...I am using a Sanyo VPC-TH1 camcorder. For reasons still unclear to me, I have been able to put a recent video into iMovie no problem, yet some from the summer (that went into iPhoto first) I was not able to import into iMovie '08. I've been using StreamClip to help me convert and it may be no surprise but I own a copy of iMac for Dummies and I do use the iMovie tutorial which is very helpful, but both pretty much cover the basics and not the particular troubleshooting that I need. Rather I should say they aren't jumping out at me if they are there. I am VERY new to iMovie and through various posts from individuals I have muttled my way through.
My current issue is this...this morning I managed to get a movie from this camera that I filmed last summer into iMovie. It is sitting in my Event Library, but some of the video clips are discolored. Although I haven't tried, it appears I could edit them out. Thing is, I don't want to. I would like to correct this and avoid it happening in the future. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? When I click this movie and the various clips show up in the window to the right, some look normal, and then others have the screen literately half blue and half green (I say green but almost like a sepia). It's video of a kids birthday party outside...so when I view one of these clips...Regardless of the background or what we are viewing..half the screen is blue and the other half greenish (sepia kind-of). The audio appears fine.
Does anyone know why and can I fix it? Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • My Ipod 2nd  generation has a problem.   I'm not able to charge it and the screen has a discolored look...everything is pink.

There is a problem with my IPod  Nano (2nd generation). It doesn't work at all. The screen is discolored...everything is pink/red.

    Groovy.
Try restoring it, if you can.

  • Good workflow to avoid white lines and discolored boxes with transperancy?

I'm somewhat new to Illustrator.  I have designs in illustrator CS4 that contain objects with drop shadows that are on top of gradient backgrounds.  When I save out the artwork as a PDF file I see random faint white lines and discolored boxes around the objects with the drop shadows.  When I print proofs of the file on my HP3500 color laser printer I see the white lines and discolored boxes as well.  I'm afraid the the lines will show up in production when I send off to the printer. Here's what I'm doing.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
(Document Raster Effects Settings: Resolution-High 300ppi/Background: Transperant/Options: preserve spot colors, add 12.7mm around object)
    1. Save file as PDF from Illustrator CS4
    2. PDF Settings
         a. PDF Preset: PDF /xa:2001
         b. Advanced Overprint and Transperancy flatener options: Preset-High Resolution
When viewed and printed from Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro there are white stiching lines that are visible.
Do I need to worry about these? Or will they go away when sent to a better printer?
    Thanks for the help.

Try "Press Quality" Acrobat 5 compatable setting for "live" transparency.  You can also try PDF/X-4 2008 which maintains live transparency and, in CS4, maintain Acrobat 5 compatability.  PDF-X1 is a setting that "flattens" transparency which may limit your output options, depending on final output device.  Double check your raster settings and make sure it is set for 300ppi/2400dpi and not 72ppi/300dpi.  As suggested by Wade, your printer may not be a Postscript Level 3 output device with a RIP.  So, the driver may not be screening the artwork properly and the stitching shows up in output.  You may benefit from taking the file to a prepress shop and have them output a "contract" proof.  If the stitching shows up in the contract proof, then the PDF setup may be the problem or the original file itself.

im sure this issue isnt unique, but i cant seem to find the thread so ill just have to ask. how would one go about cleaning the gray panelling on the inside of the macbook, namely the area around the trackpad that seems to get darker spots after lots of usage? its not that big a deal, but it does spoil the nice effect of the cleanly designed laptop.

Apple is replacing casings for discoloration of the white MacBooks.Contact them.

  • Display got discolored 2" bar on right side

    Hi,
A strange thing has happened. My iMacG5 20" suddenly and without apparent reason displays a discoloration of 2" wide, from top to bottom, on the right side. Inside that 2" wide bar white becomes greyish and my folders seem to be polarised. Have tried to make new account, but problem remains. This problem started lets say two weeks ago, but went away until now. Now the problem seems to persist. Is this the video problem as meant in the repair extension program? Or could it be something I can fix myself? Please advise!
Thanks in advance and greetings from Amsterdam.

to Steve: This is exactly the same problem as with my iMac. How old is yours? By the way I now know a lot more about this issue. The 20 inch LCD screen is devided into 12 segments. It appears that our iMacs suffer from a defective segment. Any of these segments can become defective or even break down completely. If that happens the broken down segment gives no image whatsoever. If you bring your iMac to Apple, like I did, they will say the screen is dead and needs to be replaced. If your machine is outside their 1 year warranty and has no extra AppleCare, they will charge you appr. 700USD for a new LCD panel (Apple part nr.661-3609) or even more for the panel in the bezel (part nr. 661-3318). The thing is that the panel used in this iMac, the LG.Philips LM201W01(A5)(K1), has a standard 3 year's limited warranty. So I am now trying to find out if a longer warranty period is applicable if the panel is not mounted in the Apple iMac. I sure hope so! Secondly, Apple could be forced by European law to extend their warranty to 2 years, that is in certain cases. But this only applies in Europe, of course.

I have a three week old Macbook. The plastic on the palm rest and on the screen bezel where you open the screen has begun to have a yellow discoloration. At first, I thought it was dirty so I cleaned it with the stuff that I used to clean my iBook with and it had no effect (tried several things, a damp cloth, Windex, Magic Eraser). I thought it was some dirt from touching it but then I noticed that it was starting to appear at the bottom of the screen, where I have never touched this thing. I am concerned that there is a problem with the plastic that they made the palm rests out of. It is a different material than what was used on the iBook, I think.
So, does anyone have any insight into what caused this or how to clean it off? I know it doesn't affect how it operates but I don't want a brand new laptop that looks like I chain-smoked three packs a day while using it.

You don't work for Apple's customer relations (PR) department do you?
Hardly. I think you misunderstand me. Firstly, by "minor", I mean that a surface defect is far more preferable for me than the various other defects that I have seen reported here. I have no screen shadow artefacts, I have no whining, I have no "mooing", and my MacBook, whilst definitely hot, doesn't seem excessively so. But let me get this straight: I am well and truly not happy (to put it mildly) that my three week-old MacBook has yellow discolouration of the sort that I would expect on a product at least a couple of years old (especially when my two year-old iBook has no such problems). But on the other hand, I don't want to take it anywhere near the Regent Street store (I have had dealings with them before - the "geniuses" themselves are pretty good, but getting anywhere near them, and actually getting your computer back, is another thing), and I can't afford to be without my machine. I bought this machine so that I could ensure my shareware app is Intel-ready, and frankly I'm scared of trying to exchange this MacBook for one that turns out to have one of the other, worse, problems (and yes, of course it is not really acceptable that there are any such problems, but I need a working Intel machine right now). As for my comment about it being a cosmetic defect about which Apple are unlikely to do anything, I'm merely being realistic - I think it will be hard to get Apple to care about "cosmetic" issues now that they have your money. But like I say, if that's not the case, I would be interested in hearing about it, because I am going to get in touch with Apple Care about this myself...

  • 17'' MBP Discoloration Near Trackpad

My 17'' MBP is running great since I purchased it in May 06. But now I'm noticing some discoloration near the trackpad area. It's a lot lighter, almost white, compared to the rest of handrest. I still use the white foamy strip, that came with the computer, everytime I close it. I also use the iKlear polish every two weeks.
Why the discoloration? What are my options? I'm also enrolled in the AppleCare plan. Thanks!

My last unit was weird like that too.
Took it to the Apple Store, two days later got a brand new case. Be firm with them if they give you a hard time.
You shouldn't have any problems though. The aluminum on these things is sort of funky sometimes based on your skin and acid levels.

  • New iPad Discolored/Tinted Display

Got the new iPad Firday. The resolution is phenomenal.
However, I've noticed that holding the tablet in portrait mode, the display graduates subtly in color from left to right, a cooler blue to a warmer red tint. This is uniform from top to bottom.  It is consistent throughout use, either from the moment it is turned on through extended use, in other words it doesn't go away after the device warms up. It does seem to be most pronounced at lower light levels. Full brightness seems to produce a consistent tint across the pad, but I rarely if ever use it at full brightness.
Obviously the iPad is not supposed to do this. My question is:
    1) has anybody else noticed the discoloration/tint?; and
    2) I recall that previous iPhones and/or iPods, and iPads suffered from something similar, which I believe was attributed to laminates that had not fully dried by the time the devices left the factory, and after a few weeks, the tint went away. Anybody know if this phenomenon has been reported with the new iPad, of if it could be something similar?

Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.
