Disconnect Ethernet Cable and Plug back in causes IP to mess up

Yo,
when i unplug my ethernet cable (say to move the computer) and plug it back in, my ip totally messes up, goes from 192.168.x.x ip with a 255.255.192.0 subnet mask to a 169.254.188.192 with a 255.255.0.0 subnet mask. I know in windows i could release my ip using ipconfig and renew it, but cant figure out how to do that on mac, any suggestions?

Yes, restarting always works. But im trying to avoid this. If i were on a windows computer i could type "ipconfig /release", "ipconfig /renew", and that would usually work, here i dont know what to do other than restart, and that just shouldnt be the only answer. Im directly connected to my motorola cable modem.

I just bought an AirPort express. Currently I have a qwest wired router plugged into the back of my computer via an ethernet cable. Can I just unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into the AirPort express, then use the setup utility? Most of the discussions involve an existing wireless network. I don't have one.

Correct. That's the way to set up the AirPort Express. After connecting your AirPort Express to the router, open AirPort Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps

  • Snow Leopard: I can't login when ethernet cable is plugged in.

I have a Aluminum 2007 iMac running Snow Leopard. When I try and boot it with all the cables plugged in (Keyboard, External Harddrive, Speakers, Ethernet, Second Display), it will bring up the login screen but then when I try and login, it will just hang at the default Snow Leopard Aurora Wallpaper. It shows the cursor but doesn't load the Finder or anything else. After leaving it be for a few mins, I restarted it a few times and it did the same thing. I have Archived and Installed a few times so far and that didn't fix it.
When I tried unplugging all the cables, it booted properly and works like a charm. When I plugged the Ethernet Cable in and booted it, it freezes like it used to. I tried plugging in other things and they work. But when the ethernet cable is plugged in at Startup, it will freeze at the default wallpaper (Located in System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg).
When I have the ethernet cable it will boot into Safe Boot.
Then when I booted it up without the ethernet cable it brought up two alert windows saying that Insecure Startup Item disabled. It says that /Library/StartupItems/tap and /Library/StartupItems/tun have can't be started because they don't have proper security settings. I looked them up and they appear to be Virtual Networking Interfaces (probably installed when I installed Parallels 4.0). Removing them and restarting with the ethernet cable in still has the same affect as before (freezing).
Anyone have any idea the ethernet cable is causing this to not login correctly.

    iMac
    1TB HDD
    3GB RAM

I suspect that it's busy trying to mount a network file system of some type.
Are there any errors in your logs that seem appropriate (viewable via Applications->Utilities->Console?)

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

This is more about your modem then anything. Sometimes you'll need to unplug and plug back in your modem. Consider it a glitch from the ISP or just the modem in general.
when I need to turn something off then on I try the modem first. This when I'm not doing any ware and tare to the device.

  • Bluberry iMac Ethernet Cable Not Plugged in???

I am trying to connect a slot loading 350 mhz imac to the internet through the built-in ethernet for a friend that needs it, but the network status pane (OSX.3 Panther) keeps saying the ethernet cable is not plugged in. I've tried several different Cat 5 ethernet cables and it still says this, so we can't connect to the isp (with cable modem). It also says the internal modem is not working, I get the red light next to it and the built-in ethernet buttons in Network status. I've tried direct connections to two different external cable modems, and three different ethernet cables, but I think the problem is a software issue that needs correcting.
I've tried zapping the PRAM, and resetting the nv-ram, but to no avail (as suggested by other posts I've come across). I ran Tech Tool 4 on it and the Network test PASSED.
Is there something I can do in Preferences or terminal to switch these back on so the network can see the modem and built-in ethernet? Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome!!
    Thanks! Chuck

    HI Klaus
Thanks for the reply. The router seems to be working, since when I connect it to my laptop (old iBook) via ethernet cable, no problems getting internet.
I also read that to test the card and/or cable I should connect the 2 computers together and turn on file sharing. I did this and was not able to share files. I don't know if that points to the ethernet card/cable or to incompetence on my part...
But I also tried file sharing via Airport card and that worked fine, so I think I have file sharing set up properly.

  • Ethernet cable not plugged in? But it's right there!

My MacBook Pro is insisting that the ethernet cable isn't plugged in. Now, I know the cable is good and the port on the switch is good because they work with my network printer. If I create a new location in Network Preferences (as suggested here http://ryanshelloworld.blogspot.com/2009/03/ethernet-cable-not-plugged-in.html) it works, but only at 10 Mbps (rather than gigabit) and when I unplug the cable and plug it back in it loses it again.
Any ideas on what to do next?

Try a new cable. Although it works on another device Macs are picky about the quality of the line.

  • Airport Express won't see ethernet cable and internet

I have just connected to new ISP. Airport was working perfectly before. I try to connect new modem to airport with ethernet cable and the Airport utility says nothing is connected to the ethernet WAN port and keeps telling me to plug it in but it is...I have hard reset, and rebooted everything... I am at a loss. Do I need to change IP addresses or DNS server addresses? I connect the ethernet direct to my macbook and the internet works perfectly, but I plug the ethernet into the airport and it doesn't see it. Can someone please help me, the ISP's advice is buy a router from them... but I have used airport for many years on different ISP's and they have worked. Does anyone have a suggestion besides rebooting and the paperclip?

Sorry, I am not familar with this product, but maybe some other users who have used the same product can help.
IF you have not yet performed a full Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express, that might be a good idea, as a Hard Reset will not return the AirPort Express back to factory fresh settings.
    To do this....
Power off the AirPort Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart
It is unusual for the WAN port to fail, but if you continue to see the message about no connection at the WAN port, that is likely what has happened.
If you have an Apple Store in your area, you might want to take the Express to them to let them have a look.

    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
I suspect a problem with your router. Try changing the security. First use no security as a test.
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Says ethernet cable not plugged in when it is?

    Hi,
This is my first time using this discussion board, but I have a question that has puzzled me and my technical help department at my school.
My computer [a macbok] is connected to the internet [from the computer to a phone jack in the wall] with an ethernet cable. Its been working fine for almost a week, but randomly stopped working last night. After lots of testing, the problem is quite obviously with my computer, which is brand new!
Whenever I plug my ethernet cable in, the network menu under system preferences tells me "The cable for Built-in Ethernet is not plugged in". I have just discovered that it occasionally works if I manually hold the cable in the plug in the computer and press down hard.
Is there some way that something could be stuck in the ethernet plug-in thing on my computer that could be preventing it from connecting to the cable like it used to? Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? My computer is still under warranty, but I am currently living in another country from home, so it would be a pain to have to get a new one or get mine fixed!
    Thanks,
    Mary.

couple of things to try before you call tech support or go to an apple store... sounds like the connection between the ethernet cable and your macbook is faulty. this could be a hardware problem with the macbook, but it could also be a faulty ethernet cable. the ethernet jack could be failing.
try using someone else's ethernet cable and seeing if this connection problem persists.
also, look inside the ethernet jack on your macbook. there should be 8 small copper contact points. these should be parallel. if one is bent or they don't look parallel, then that would make the connection unstable/faulty.
    good luck!

  • My G4 Mirror door fails to start up. Light comes on momentarily and you can hear it trying to start, but nothing happens. Unplug and plug back and try again eventually it will start.

    Hi Jim,
Could be a few things, but first...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
Another common one is bad Capacitors in mostly the PSU, that need to bleed off charges before things work right.

  • My ipad air will not charge when connected to any outlet with its own cable and plug.

I had this Ipad Air since March 2014 and always kept it updated and charged, but since three days ago it does not seems to like its own charging cable and plug that came with it. I tried different outlets and other cords and plugs. I closed and restarted it, but no result. Now it is off because of no battery power. What can it be?

    Try the following:
    Option 1
    1. Settings>Airplane Mode>ON
    2. Turn the iPad OFF
    3. Leave unit off for about 20 seconds.
    4. Turn the iPad back on and it should now show "charging"
    5. Turn Aeroplane Mode OFF
    Option 2
Reset iPad and when the apple logo shows up, plug in the charger.
