Disconnect from WiFi Button in Yosemite (Faster File Transfers via Airdrop)

Hi all! Just thought I'd share a great new pro-tip I found that's pretty handy.
Sometimes file transfers through a complex or busy network with a  (think hotel lobby or coffee shop), Airdrop file transfers can run extremely slow vs. it going from computer to computer via no network (Ad Hoc). I was determined to find a work around for disconnecting from a WiFi network without turning off Wifi.
Anyways, Yosemite introduced a much asked for feature - The disconnect from WiFi button! Just hold down option while you select the WiFi indicator on the menu bar and click disconnect! Your WiFi will continue to be on and it simply won't connect to that network again. If you now search for other computers in AirDrop, it will find them and be a much faster computer to computer connection.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Test Markup in Mail using the iCloud account.
Continue testing to see what works in the new User.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.
Finder - my iMac name is - iMacs iMac. All of a sudden it become iMacs iMac (2) and latter iMacs iMac (6). What are these numbers ?
In System Preferences > Sharing you can see name. When Finder adds a number it indicates it's seeing another drive with the same name. You can select to rename but this could also be an indication of issues at the base level.
Do you have an external drive that could be used to clone your drive in case you need to do a clean install?

  • Why my mac mini wifi disconnects from wifi using  arris modem

i have the 2013 mini mac , and i have problems with my wifi, im using arris modem, the mini mac disconnect from wifi every 10 or 20 min ?

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or your computer's firmware.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it. Note: this is not applicable to OS X 10.9 or later.
    Step 4
This step will erase some of your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Recreate your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • My new Mac Air continues to disconnect from WiFi after going to sleep.  When waking it up I have to manually re-connect.  How do I keep it connected?

My new Mac Air continues to disconnect from WiFi after going to sleep.  When waking it up I have to manually re-connect.  How do I keep it connected?

I had this problem too and solved it by doing a clean install. After that it was gone.
This is a drastic method since it takes quite some time to reinstall lion and all your software.
Thoughts I had why it started working after a clean install are the following:
It looked like the airport wasn't able to reconnect fast enough before the connection timed out. So what could have prevented my mac from being able to connect fast enough?
Apps that consume processor cycles. I love what I would call 'System Enhancers', little apps that enhance my workflow (Moom, Alfred, Dropbox, Default Folder etc). I'm not saying that these are the problem, they might be programmed processor friendly, but check if you have apps that consume processor cylcles. It might prevent airport from being able to reconnect quickly enough before it times out.
Mobile Config profiles. Another thought I had was that I had a mobile config 802.1X profile installed for the company were I worked. It used TTLS to connect to the corporate network. This profile might have gotten in the way.
    And a sidenote...
Routers with hardware acceleration might also be a problem. My router is a Wireless Gigabit Router 300N WL-351 and has hardware acceleration. As soon as I activate that my wifi connection keeps dropping. It is as if a Macbook Air can't handle that amount of optimisation.
That's it, hope it helps those who are still having the problem.
    Best, Jan

  • MacBook Pro disconnects from wifi and tells me that my password is incorrect

recently my MacBook Pro disconnects from wifi and when I try to reconnect it says invalid password. I know the password is correct and the network is the right one. I usually just spam the sender key and eventually it connects. but 10 minutes later it will disconnect again and the whole process starts again

Which password, the one for your router, or the one for your email account?

Since I updated to iOS 5.1 my iPad (1st gen) disconnects from WiFi network after 30 minutes. I did a full system restore with iOS 5.1 and the problem persists.
    How to replicate:
    Disable auto-lock
    Connect to wifi network
Open an app that continuously does network activityYou might for example run a shoutcast webradio streaming app and start listening to some music
Leave the iPad running and turned on
After approx 30 minutes wifi drops and your music app stops the stream
This happens to me every time, after approximately 30 minutes, with either the iPad on USB charge or disconnected from charge.
Used to run apps connected to wifi regularly for hours and never had this problem before the upgrade to 5.1
    I already tried to:
    Restore network settings
Completely wipe and restore iPad to 5.1
    Reboot wifi router
    My router is a Netgear 834 G
try updating your router firmware http://support.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1288

  • HT1595 apple tv disconnects from wifi

My apple TV periodically disconnects from my wifi network forcing me to restart it.  I have tried resetting all settings. I have tried restoring, but it won't stay connected to wifi long enough to allow it to restore.

Same problem with me too.  My apple tv worked perfect for about a month and last week sometime it suddenly started exiting from Netflix and completely disconnecting from wifi.  It happened very occasionally at first but now if I get two minutes of connection I'm lucky.  Then, I wait a few minutes and it re-connects only to do the same thing minutes later.
I tried to restore as well but it wouldn't stay connected long enough.
I tried moving the apple tv away from my home theater system which was the only thing I could think of nearby that might cause interference, but that didn't work either.  Not too surprising as my Wii has no problems with loosing connection and it was right beside the Apple Tv when the problems started.
All other wifi devices I use work perfect and when the Apple TV is actually connecting to my wifi, it shows a solid 5 bars.
Best I can tell is this is a problem with the Apple TV and not my wifi.  And as mentioned in an earlier post, it is enough to drive a guy crazy with how irritating it is.
I plan to try and get it exchanged for one that works but my local Apple reseller isn't set up to do warranty exchanges so I will be taking it into an Apple store in a nearby city and try there.  Hoping I didn't flush my money away buying this thing!

  • Stop disconnecting from WiFi if I cancel browser login?

This is a bit of a weird one, so if you get lost, tell me and I'll try to clairify.
Right now, the way the WiFi I'm using works is you connect to the network and the browser page pops up. On normal computers (OS X/Windows), you are able to just ignore the browser login and I start a VPN connection, which gets me my Internet connection.
On iOS, I connect to the WiFi network. Of course, the login page from the browser pops up. I cancel it out and... iOS disconnects from the WiFi network. This is the exact opposite if what I've want.
I've tried starting the connection, backing out of the WiFi menu, then flipping the VPN switch, but it doesn't work.
Is there any way for me to stop iOS from disconnecting from WiFi because I didn't complete the connection? I just want it to connect to the network and let me take it from there...

Well five minutes later, I discover  the "Auto-login" switch when you tap the arrow next to a WiFi network name. So the real hero here is the "more like this" box on the right!

No, I dont use coconutWiFi. Is there any way to fix this or do I have to wait for apple to release proper patches?
    mbp   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My machine doesnt forget the keys for wifi or any of the other issues describes in what you are refering to. It just keeps disconnecting all the time and the pings are through the roof. Noone can tell me that pings > 1sec are normal, ap is in the same room as the computer, besides wifi works just fine for my linux computer and so it did for my mbp before 10.4.8. That being sad i tried the instructions and it didnt change anything for me.
