Disconnect to wireless when computer sleeps

When I get on the computer for internet after the HD/screen are asleep the wifi connection is lost. Sometimes it finds it and reconnects which takes 30-90 secs, but sometimes it will net find it and I have to sign on to the network. I have an older iMac that is pre-intel processor that stays connected. I suppose it is something with snow leopard.
I have tried a few techniques that as mentioned on the support pages, such as deleting other network choices.
Is there a solution?

  • PPPoE Still Disconnects When Computer Sleeps

With 10.9.2 and again with 10.9.3, PPPoE disconnects when computer sleeps.  This didn't happen with OS 8.x, OS 9.x, OS X 10.2, 10.8.x, 10.9.0, or 10.9.1.  System Preferences>Energy Saver is set for display and computer to sleep after about 12 minutes.  I'd rather not set computer to never sleep.  Please advise and correct for 10.9.4.  Thank you.

I have the same issue. Also after wake-up connecting to PPPoE is a challenge, because it establishes only after 5-7 attemps (Authentication failed). I guess 10.9.3 update causes this.

  • TS2972 Apple tv sleeps when computer sleeps. What to do

The TV disconnects from Apple TV sharing when computer sleeps. What to do?

George, Your trouble sounds just like mine. You can read my thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4204561?start=0&tstart=0, but in summary:
Itunes and the Apple TV exchange messages about once per minute. If any wifi interference stops the message-and-reply, iTunes closes the home sharing connection.  Other services are usually fine.
I solved my problems by wiring the ATV and computer. (Wiring either alone didn't work.)  Home Sharing is now rock solid and works exactly as advertised. No drop-outs during play. The iTunes library is always available on ATV - I never have to restart home sharing or iTunes or the ATV. If a computer or ATV restarts, they pair up automatically.
Not everyone can wire, I know. But it worked for me. Test it if you can.

Since I upgraded to Maverick when computer sleeps it will not wake up but must be restarted?  Also password to icloud is never saved?

I read someone said you can tap on "other" when selecting which wifi you connect to and then entering the exact wifi name of the network you wish to join and the password and then joining that network allowed the password to be saved.  Also with iOS 6 the minimum length of the password needs to be 8 characters.  Maybe you password on your router is less than 8 characters long

  • Disconnecting when computer sleeps- will not reconnect

My grandfathers MacBook disconnects from wireless network whenever the computer goes to sleep/is temporarily shut. When it is opened back up, says it is not connected to the internet even though the Network is reading as working. Mail will not send either. The only way I can get it back in gear is running the Network diagnostics or simply restarting the computer.
    Please Help.
OH- "Disconnect from wireless network when logged out" is NOT checked in system preferences

Hello candace171. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If he's using Preferred Networks, try the following ...
    1. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    o System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
o In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
o Delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list
    2. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
o Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
o Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
o Restart, or log out then back in.
    3. Add Preferred Network(s)
    o System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
o In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
o Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
o Restart or log out then back in.

  • Dropping signal when computer sleeps

I am having trouble with the wireless network dropping off every time the computer sleeps. Each time my iMac sleeps from inactivity when I start it up again I get a disconnect message and have to go through diagnostics to get the airport extreme to run again and then everything is fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Eric

I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro. Even using signals in my Preferred Networks list after it sleeps it drops the connection and a re-start is the only way around the problem.
    Any advice appreciated.

  • Mail goes offline when computer sleeps.... can I prevent this

I searched and couldn't seem to find an answer for this. When my wife checks her mail in the morning after the computer sleepsshe gets the triangle with the exclamation point.
She will click go online and then she can check the mail.
It seems like when the computer sleeps it loses the internet connection and mail does not realize it has recconected when the computer is waked.
Doesn't do it with mine when but I use wireless.
Not sure if it is a router issue or not, and if so any idea how to fin it.
    Thank you
    Mike

Try this. Upon waking the computer from sleep. Wait about 20 seconds before doing any network activity like Mail or Safari. Then try it.
When a computer goes to sleep, to the rest of the world, it is the same as being turned off. It's Internet connection is disconnected. It takes a few seconds to re-establish the connection.

  • Airport connection dropping off when computer sleeps

Starting with the latest 10.4.8 update my airport connection drops when the computer goes to sleep. No amount of configuring will get the computer to recognize my airport. Turning off the power to the airport, waiting, and re-connecting does no good. The only way to get wireless is to restart. Once restarted the airport connection is re-established without any configuration and continues to be fine until the computer goes to sleep. Hard wiring ethernet works at all times without problems.

    thanks,
i read the doc, looked in the system prefs where my re-connect was set to "preferred" and there was only one wpa network listed. i deleted it from the list then re-added per the apple document. will see if this works.
in my own mind i don't think this is the solution but am keeping an open mind. the weird thing about my situation is that after the computer sleeps there are no available networks under the airport menu. i know in fact there are 4-6 in my area. after restarting the 4-6, including mine, networks are all there and my network has been connected to.

  • USB has no power when computer sleeps

When my computer goes into sleep mode, time machine cannot connect to my external HD because apparently the usb port goes to sleep along with the computer. Same thing happens when i plug my iphone to charge. I plug in my iphone, shows that it's charging, I put the computer to sleep, it stops charging instantly. I have two imac computers, same thing happens on both machines. Is there anyway to keep the power to the usb ports while the computer sleeps?

Hi there, Welcome to the Apple Support Forums. What I say is just my own opinion. We all work in many different ways.
I can't see any benefit to keeping a USB port fired up to keep a hard drive running, when the computer and Time Machine are both asleep. If nothing is happening or changing on your computer then there's not much point of keeping a Time Machine drive running. In addition, I wouldn't consider using a USB powered drive for something important like a backup system. USB powered devices can be pretty flakey.
Meanwhile, as far as a charger for an iPhone, this year at MacWorld SF, I bought a Griffin Simplifi dock. It also doubles as a memory card reader, and has two USB ports for thumb drives or whatever. It's got it's own AC power adapter so I don't worry about the computer going to sleep or even shutting it down.
Amazon has the Simplify device for $42 w/free shipping. I leave my iPhone in the dock whenever I'm around the office. I think I paid around $70 at the show and don't regret it a bit.
Apple also provided you with a small square AC power adapter for a USB cable to connect to charge your iPhone (at least they did with mine). But I really like having the dock sitting just in front of my Mac.

  • HT3819 homesharing stops when computer sleeps. I already checked the "wake for access". What is wrong?

Homesharing stops when the computer sleeps. Already checked the " wake for access" and already changed the computer sleep to never.

I have tried everything I could to fix this, but some things require actually being on Firefox, and since I cannot get on, I cannot click on the tabs to do it. I have even totally uninstalled firefox, and that has not fixed this. I still get the same message that firefox is running and I need to close it or restart (which I have also tried dozens of times). I have removed things like Java, and that has not helped either. If I cannot even get on line in firefox, how can I fix this. I am not crazy about using internet explorer, but right now, it is my only option. I even tried to start in safe mode, and the same message box pops up!

  • Why can't I disconnect backup drive when computer is sleeping?

Often I would like to just grab my sleeping MacBook Pro and go. But if I unplug the USB backup drive, the system always scolds me that the drive was not put away properly and I may have lost data. The alternative is to wake the system up, put away the drive, unplug the drive, put the system back to sleep, and finally go.
Annoying and, I think, totally unnecessary. Surely OS X is smart enough to flush any pending writes to the hard drive when it's entering Sleep mode. So in reality, there's no possibility of losing data, and no reason to scold the user, right?
Why can't Apple make this simple fix? It's been this way for a LONG time.

    Hi,
Me thinks you ask just too much from an operating system. It is built this way so that if you are still using an external device, without actually realising the fact at the time of disconnection, it ( the computer ) prompts you as such.
Imagine the posts that would appear if this were not the case?

  • HP 8620 all-in-one: scanner becomes unavailable in print queue window when computer sleeps

I just bought a new printer/scanner/fax - HP 8620 all-in-one.  I have Mac OSX 10.9.3 and the most up to date drivers/software from the HP website (april 2014).  I have connected the printer via ethernet cable to our wireless router.  I have installed as per intructions.
When my computer goes to sleep, or the printer goes to sleep, I will return to the computer to find that the "scanner" is not available (ie greyed out when I go to "open scanner" in the print queue or system preferences, or try to use "HP scan". I tried a few things, like uninstall/reinstalling, and have worked out that if I reboot my computer the scanner option seems to "whiten" again (ie become available).
Is there a way to prevent this happening???? I don't have time to be rebooting every time I need to use the scanner!

You can't use the scan button on the printer. You have to start the scan from OS X.

  • Airport extreme base station is turning off when computer sleeps

I had Brighthouse upgrade my modem to their "Lightning" package.  They installed a new modem.  I had to make some config changes to block their wireless router and continue to use my airport extreme.  Everything is working but when my computer goes to sleep or is off, I can't get on the internet with my laptop or I-phone.

  • G-raid drives eject "improperly" when computer sleeps

I've had this problem off and on over the years, but it seems to have come back recently with the installation of Yosemite.
I have a Macbook Pro and a Thunderbolt display. The drives are attached to the firewire port on the computer.

    Hey,
When your computer goes to sleep it usually closes the usb connections because they draw power. Try going into energy saver and check the box next to "prevent computer from automatically sleeping when display is off" I hope that helps.

  • Applications always close when computer sleeps

I have 2 mac minis. With my new one, all open applications close after about a half hour of non-use. I know I did something with the first one to prevent this, but I cannot remember what setting I need to change. I have tried the energy saver adjustment (increasing it to 3 hours), but the apps still close. Does the computer shut down all open apps when it logs me out? If so, can I fix this by disabling automatic log out? Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums!
Your situation is strange. I can answer one of your questions: "Does the computer shut down all open apps when it logs me out?" Yes, it does.
But I don't understand why the computer going sleep would log you out. That is not the standard behavior.
Are you by any chance using "Fast User Switching" or "Parental Controls"?
