Disconnect WiFi while keeping it active
Hello Everyone,
i connected my iMac via Ethernet to an AirPort Extreme while using my MacBook Air over WiFi.
Since Maps and AirDrop only work with WiFi Active my iMac will connect to my AirPort as soon as WiFi is activated.
Before Mavericks i just didn´t connect to my AirPort on the iMac and kept it active, but since Mavericks is syncing WiFi Settings through all my devices it is connecting to WiFi automatically.
Is there a Way to manually disconnect the WiFi on the iMac without deleting the Profile (which would delete my Settings on the MacBook Air, right?) and keep WiFi active and connect through WiFi when ever i need it?

If you have the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, can you not go there and turn the Wi-Fi off? System Preferences/Network - select Wi-Fi and turn it off.
It can cause the computer to rename itself is the only problem I am aware of.

Lots of things can impact wifi connections. If you are at the marginal edge of the wifi range (which depends not only on distance, but what's between you and the transmitter) you may find the connection dropping in and out. Sometimes a minor repositioning of the computer or transmitter can solve the issue.
As well, interference can also create problems. For instance, microwave ovens are really good at disrupting 2.4Ghz signals, and that the frequency used most often in wifi routers--so if someone turns on the microwave and it's between you and the transmission point it won't be surprising if the connection drops. As well, metal blocks the signal fairly effectively, so if (say) ductwork is between the CPU and the wireless router there can be problems.
Finally, I've run into some combos of devices and routers that just don't seem to like each other :-) . That said, I've not hit that problem with either Air I'm running (an 11" and a 13"), though obviously I've not tried to connect them to every type of router out there.
Just this week I was at a hotel and in my room the hotel wifi was "interesting" with every device I tried (iPhone, Android phone, Kindle Fire, iPad and the two Airs) dropping connection regularly from the work desk. Turned out if I moved the devices over to the nightstand on the other end of the room (not the best work environment) all of the problems went away, so it clearly was a signal issue and the exact layout of that room and the hotel's wifi.
If the machine has a problem when positioned close to a variety of routers, then I'd suspect a hardware issue with the wifi card in the Air and get that checked by Apple. Similarly, if your problem is with your home router, I'd check to see if other devices also are getting dropped, since there could be a hardware issue on the router. -
im using an iphone 4s with the latest firmware which is 6.1.3 but my wifi button keeps going grey how can i fix it? i rested network connections and it worked for a while and went grey again,what can i do?
Have you worked through the Troubleshooting iOS and WiFi knowledge base article? If not, see if there is info in there that might help.
Is the WiFi greyed out on all WiFi networks or just the one? If it does this on all then there may be a hardwaer problem that needs attention from the techs at an Apple store genius bar.
Before that, however, try a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if it appears. That clears a lot of iOS hang ups that occur. -
I want to bring in text from Word (and the web) that is already hyperlinked into InDesign. How do I do it while keeping the links active?
Whenever I copy/paste from web or Word it removes the hyperlinks. And when I try to do it by "Place"ing a Word document into my InDesign project it keeps the formatting with it, the rectangles around the text.
I have the latest version of InDesign.
Any help is appreciated.Copy-and-paste may not include formatting. A regular import using Place is the best way.
The rectangles around the hyperlinks are just to indicate they are links -- they do not print, but they do show up in your PDF.
You can remove them by double-clicking the hyperlink in the Hyperlinks panel and select "Invisible Rectangle" as type.
Typically, Word hyperlinks are formatted -- blue text, underline -- with a Character Style. If you want to remove or change the formatting, all you have to do is change the character style. My experience, though, is you must check all hyperlinks because for no apparent reason sometimes they appear in the document without the character style. -
I have an apple id account set up with an icloud; I would like to continue to share the music from my devices while keeping the contacts and photos seperate, is this possible? My wife and daughter received iphones for Christmas, I set up my daughters phone to my cloud and all of my contacts and photos ended up on her phone. Is there a way to keep them seperate in 1 cloud (with folders or something) or does each phone need its own icloud? And if so, can we still keep 1 apple id for music purchases or will we not be able to share music anymore? Thank you for any help you can provide, I am confused with all of this as we are fairly new to the apple world.

iTunes and iCloud are separate things. You can keep using a single ID for iTunes and use separate ID's for iCloud, thereby keeping mail, contact etc separate. -
WiFi Profile keeps getting disabled
I'm always having issues where the WiFi profile gets disabled.
My school has a number of access points all with the same connection info and so I should be able to connect onto all the different access points seemlessly, however, it seems to get disabled a lot especially when I'm in an area of poor reception, or when I'm moving from one access point to another. It is extremely frustrating because I have to keep manually clicking on the profile, and then re-enabling it. I already have "Allow inter access point handovers" enabled. I've tried with IP 6 on and off, doesn't make a difference. I had the same issue on my Playbook as well. There are a number of other people having problems as well as seen here on CrackBerry.http://forums.crackberry.com/blackberry-10-os-f269/saved-wifi-network-keeps-disabling-itself-774078/ As people have mentioned, this is likely due to the algorithm used by BlackBerry to prevent battery drain, but clearly it's causing the connection to stay dead. Especially for connections that have ever connected successfully, it would be good for the phone to keep trying every 5 or 10 minutes, or maybe try and figure out what cell-towers might be connected to the WiFi so if you are within a certain area, it will know to keep trying. Recently i owned BlackBerry z10 and Having Latest firmware upgrade version: 10.2.1.2102 Update.
I am Using Wi-fi Connection to connect internaet to my phone but since i h'd started using BlackBerry z10 it constantly drops connection with Home Router wifi furthermore it also disables wifi radio so other device connect ed to that router even make disconnected to router. Solution is to that problem is i have to restart my router every time.
I tried to change following changes to my router:
Mode: From 11bgn mixed to 11n only
Enabled SSID Broadcast
Wireless Security: From WAP-Personal to WAP2-Personal
Beacon Interval: From 100 to 50
RTS Thresold: From 2346 to 2304
I h'd made Address Reservation of my phone to router.
Note: My Router has Latest Firmware Version:3.16.6 Build 130529 Rel.47286n (H/W Version WR740 v4.0000)
I am using Sony Xperia Acros, HP ProBook 4440s, Sony Vaio Laptop Devices Parallely, Either of any h'd not problem with connection drop out until.

How to keep homesharing active from iTunes on Lion OS?
I have 4 Macs (w MBPs, 1 iMac, 1 Mac Mini) and 2 Apple TVs (latest). Only the Mac Mini is on Lion OS (10.7.4) since that is what it came with new. I use it to serve my media to the Apple TVs, but they can also get served from the other 3 Macs (all on Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Only the Mac Mini on Lion drops homesharing when not in use - the other Macs on Snow Leopard keep homesharing alive. While it is actively streaming, the Mini does not drop the feed. I have the Mac Mini set to never go to sleep or or to screen saver, so it should remain accessible via homesharing. But if I don't use it for an hour or two, it drops out of homesharing - and it is the only Mac to do so. I can get it back by quitting then restarting iTunes or by shutting down homesharing and restarting it while keeping iTunes open. Of course, a restart of the mini would also bring back full functionality. None of these are acceptable when you are sitting in another room trying to access media via Apple TV. As a result of the above, I am assuming that the problem is isolated within Lion OS and how it supports iTunes.
I have seen other discussions claiming Apple TV drops out, but my problem is definitely the Mac Mini on Lion since at the same time I can see it drops from the other Macs and not just from Apple TV - all homesharing devices lose sight of the Mini but keep seeing each other.
I'd love to downgrade my Mini to Snow Leopard but apparently can't. I'd buy an older used Mini, but I need HDMI - so, I'm stuck until this is fixed. My other devices will definitely stay on Snow Leopard until I see this problem resolved by Apple.
Any suggestions on how to keep homesharing alive with iTunes on Lion?Everything that is on your ipod should also be on your computer. is it not?

Syncing contacts between 2 different computers while keeping both independent of each other?

I'm wondering if there is a way to have my calendars and contacts from 2 different computers running Mountain Lion sync to my iPad retina while keeping the 2 computers from merging the calendars and contacts? I do have a separate apple ID set up on each computer, and each computer does connect to iCloud.
The reason is one is my work machine, the other my personal home machine. The home machine keeps my wife and me connected by sharing the contacts and calendars which has been working well. I don't want to clutter up that by mixing in calendars and contacts from my work computer and don't want my wife to have access to them either.
The only way I can figure to have both reside on my iPad while keeping them independant of each other is to physically connect my iPad to my work machine and not have the contacts in iCloud. That way when I transfer them to the iPad via iTunes, it will be under the category On My Mac rather than iCloud contacts.
The only problem with that is then I'm always having to connect and sync my iPad to my work machine.

Galaxy Note Edge Wifi Connection keeps dropping off
My wifi connections keeps disconnecting even after many attempts to login and getting connected on my home wifi it disconnects within a few seconds. Checked my modem and router and all is good (up to date firmware) and no connection issues on other devices. I verified my Edge is up to date as well. I am at a loss as to why it keeps auto disconnecting from my wifi. I tested tethering to my other cell phone and it stayed connected to it. So where do I go from here?

We can try a couple of troubleshooting steps to resolve this: First, try resetting the app preferences by going to Settings>General>Application manager>Applications then press Settings>Reset app preferences. Tell us if this helps.
If not, then please run your device in Safe Mode - http://tinyurl.com/oo54noe and try again. This turns off all 3rd party apps. Tell us if it helps.

How do I keep myself active so I don't get auto-logged out?

My wife & I have a computer that we share with our young kids. They each have their own account with Parental Controls turned on and time limits and it all works well with one exception. When they run out of time, their programs (often resource-intensive Safari) stay open and using CPU and memory and making the computer run slowly. We want to try setting the Security preference to log out after X minutes of inactivity, but we don't want the account we use to be auto-logged out.
My thought was that maybe there is a simple piece of software that could do something every few minutes that would keep her account active. Thinking about it now, I'll bet there are a lot of users who have the opposite problem - they want to be logged out when they are inactive, but something is keeping them active!
Anyway, does anyone know of a simple program that will keep her active so she doesn't seem to be inactive even when she is so we can 'trick' the Mac into thinking she never goes inactive? Then we can set the preference to log out inactive users, thus fixing the problem of our kids' programs running even after they've used up their time for the day.
Or maybe there is another solution to this problem. Any thoughts?

ThadMac OS X is a multi-User system. Settings for Parental Controls are on a per-User basis.
Parental Controls do not apply to your Account, unless you set your account to have some Parental Controls as well. -
I have just received my second MacBook Air 11" the Wifi connection keeps dropping. Also, after 3 meters away from the rooter it keeps searching for network! It is the second try and the same issues. Will Apple ever come up with a solution? There is a program pack for the connection issue but I cannot believe that this computer wifi keeps connected only while nearby the rooter!

If you hold down an "option" key while you pull down the Wi-Fi/AirPort menu bar item, what value do you see for "RSSI"?
It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
1) Use the AirPort/Wi-Fi menu bar item to turn AirPort/Wi-Fi off, then on again.
2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort/Wi-Fi menu.
3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort/Wi-Fi item from the left column, then add it back.
4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
5) In the same panel, select the AirPort/Wi-Fi connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease". Note that the fix this step implements may be temporary.
6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( _not_ <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them. If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.
